The Mark Spencer Hotel

Well located downtown hotel. Many dining options in area. Nice wine and cheese hour at 5PM.

The hotel was really nice! They didn’t have their own private parking lot. Sigh, we were nervous abt parking in the city parking lot across from the hotel, paying an overnight fee of $35. We noticed there weren’t much security there… just one video monitor. Our guts were right, our SUV was broken in, breaking a passenger door window glass. Nothing was taken from inside. We spend 3 hrs getting the window replaced. We would stay at the hotel again if they had their own parking lot with security videos all over the lot.

Food onsite was good and reasonably priced for breakfast. Staff were all friendly and the location downtown can't be beat.Room size and bed were nice also. Kitchen was a disappointment due to refrigerator size but stovetop, toaster, and cookware was good. Also didn't realize the gym would be as small. Really could only fit one or two people max comfortably.

The staff were great, but the property seemed rundown, moldy, dusty, and slightly musty smelling. The cost and free bottle of wine with happy hour at 5pm were nice perks though. The place does have a gym and cafe, but no pool or hot tub.

Pretty little property with very friendly people. The bed was very comfortable. The WiFi had some glitches the day we left and I couldn't reach the front desk for assistance (the phone rang and rang), so that was annoying. But he cafe is very slow for how simple the fare is (maybe tell customers ahead of time to set that expectation). Best part was it was very close to many places we wanted to visit, so very walkable. I would stay here again.

Super cute old hotel right in the heart of the city. Walking distant to all the things we came to see. Room was nicely air conditioned and clean. Bed was very comfortable. Great location and affordable. Free wine and cheese on the roof was very nice.

Very nice historical property, smallish rooms, but very quaint. Wonderful mattresses and beds. The kitchen area was fully furnished with pots and pans. 24 hour coffee downstairs and free wine and cheese at 5 pm daily.

Great hotel very clean, quiet and updated. Close to many restaurants. Second time staying here and I would stay again. Only downfall is parking the garage is very tight, so you have to choose wisely where you decide to park as it’s a challenge getting out of spots.

My car was broken into while parked at the hotel lot. I understand that it’s a neighborhood issue but still wish there were more security, especially around the hotel property.

Nice staff. Nice, big room but had an awful smell. Portland is not a nice area unfortunately. We were glad to get out of there.

The staff was great, friendly and attentive, the location is good. The only thing I will say is the hotel is old, I mean over 100 years old which gives it a lot of its charm but the carperts need a good cleaning and in my room the carpet was not in great condition and the dust ruffle was stained. If you’re looking for a modern hotel this is not it, But if your looking for a friendly place with charm this is the place.

Hotel staff was pleasant, easily checked out luggage before check in. The room was surface level clean in most places. Bathroom had hair on bathroom door, shower had quite a bit of black mold.

The hotel is nice. Some of the furniture in our room was a bit stained but overall the cleanliness of the rest of the room was good. The area around the hotel is unique and has some streets that are not so nice.

The location was convenient and there were restaurant options within walking distance. The room was spacious and the bathroom offered a lot of vanity space. Unfortunately the shower was not clean and left an overall impression of the place being dirty.

Our stay was enjoyable overall. However, we would like to mention two issues: 1. Housekeeping service was only provided upon request, which we weren't aware of initially (we assumed daily cleaning was standard). 2. Both rooms we stayed in had mold growth on the shower walls and floors - this requires attention.

There was black mold and a bad smell. The concierge was very nice and tried to accommodate. However, we ended up staying somewhere else.

Our room was very clean and comfortable but definitely had a musty smell, probably because it's an older hotel. The staff was very friendly & helpful and the overall vibe of the property is cool. The area directly around the property felt fairly safe but within a few blocks started to feel unsafe. Unfortunately downtown Portland just isn't what it used to be.

The hotel is old! We were there on a business trip and the Wifi signal was horrendous!! We couldn't get any work done in our rooms in the evening. The place smelled musty and it was just a bad experience! We visit Portland many times a year, we won't be staying here again!

Friendly, accommodating staff. Beautiful room and the bed was one of the most comfortable hotel beds I’ve ever slept in.

Amazing location, great size rooms and facilities. Very comfortable. The only thing I can fault it for is the mattress. It was on the softer side and you'd be dragged into the middle of the bed and I'm very light

Stayed in room 118. I did not know this was an ADA room so the bathroom especially was very strangely laid out. The bed was fantastic and the room size was great, but we seemed to be right over the dumpster area so at 4:30am when the dumpsters were rolling in and out we were wide awake! Other than that rude awakening everything else was super nice! Thanks for the wine!

Nice room, excellent service, quite comfortable - wifi rather weak

Rooms were decent size, bed was comfy, great size bathroom with walk in shower. Not much of a view from windows. A bit outdated of a hotel. Location was convenient.

Disclaimer: not one to complain (check my reviews, I'm usually an easy going traveler). That stated, this is my third time staying at the Mark Spencer Hotel since covid and quite frankly, it's my favorite place in Portland (or rather, was). But this third time, it wasn't a charm. I stayed in a queen-bed size suite in floor 6 and there were (assuming) patrons above my room that were (to what sounds like) sliding their closet door intermittently throughout the duration of my stay (and you can hear it as though it was being drawn in my actual suite - crystal clear!). Conclusively, I heard it so many times that it severely disrupted my sleep (even with the fan on high and noise cancelling headphones on) and i struggled driving back to Seattle as I was so exhausted from lack of rest. There was also vocal noise from other patrons from corresponding rooms, but that was short lived and understandable (but the previous two times I stayed here, was situated in larger rooms and it was as quiet as a decommissioned library (yes, not a single bo-peep). Love the hotel, location and staff, but this made it unbearable and without being overly dramatic, when usually a stellar experience at this establishment, now left me with slight PTSD (as I'd be paranoid about running into this matter in future visits). This might have to be a no-go from me here on out (darn shame because everything else about it made it so fantastic). -B

The staff seemed cheerful and professional and the hotel appears to have the bones of a classy place, but the mattress was terrible and the only view from my room was into the bottom of a very deep light well.

I’ve had some poor experiences staying in downtown Portland before, but this hotel was a pleasant surprise. At first, I was a little worried about the long check-in line, but the staff handled it exceptionally well, professional, polite, and courteous throughout. Parking with the hotel is optional, but I highly recommend it. Everything is within walking distance, restaurants, shops, and the stadium (we were in town for a soccer game). The facility itself is clean, modern, and well maintained. Overall, a great stay, we’ll definitely be coming back!

I strongly advise women and femme-identifying people not to stay here, especially if you are traveling solo. A staff member of this hotel verbally assaulted me with gendered/violent language. I contacted the hotel about it and have received no reply after multiple weeks.

I booked a Deluxe Double Queen at The Mark Spencer Hotel for a quick family visit, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. From the moment I walked in, the staff made me feel welcome and check-in was a breeze. The room itself was beautiful, spacious, spotless, and thoughtfully designed with a perfect mix of modern comfort and classic charm. The beds were incredibly comfortable, making it hard to get up in the morning! The location is also unbeatable. It’s right in the heart of downtown, which made getting around Portland easy and fun. Even though the hotel is centrally located, the room was quiet and felt like a relaxing retreat after a busy day. I would recommend The Mark Spencer to any traveler families, couples, or solo adventurers. It’s the perfect blend of comfort, style, and convenience. I’ll definitely be staying here again on my next trip to Portland!

This is my third stay at the Mark Spencer Hotel and it is now my go to hotel when I travel to Portland, which is frequently. They are top notch in every category—especially customer service. The front desk is unfailingly kind and helpful. It always feels like they are happy to see me again.

We arrived early (due to flight changes) and requested an early check in (and offered to pay for it). The front desk clerk (female) was rude and sternly informed us they were not required to check us in until 4pm. I understand the policy, but when you can accommodate customers faced with travel changes, wouldn’t you try? We sat in the lobby area until 3:50pm at which time our room was ready. We saw four other groups check in early. Certainly a request could have been made to the cleaning staff to clean our room earlier than 3:50pm. Travel is hard these days, and a little flexibility and kindness goes a long way. The room (2 queen executive suite) needs some love - bathroom fan didn’t work, vent in bathroom was filthy. Only one elevator working. Other than the front desk clerk all other employees were very friendly. Overall not impressed and wouldn’t return.

The front desk staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. When we noticed a bad smell in our original room, they quickly resolved the issue by switching us to a new room, which we really liked—it was clean, spacious, and comfortable. The gym is small but very clean. Overall, we had a great stay and appreciated the excellent service.

Excellent stay in the heart of Portland. Hotel is well-situated within walking distance of great restaurants, shopping and sights. We enjoyed the friendly service and comfortable rooms.

Centrally located to the downtown core with easy access to highways

We loved the Mark Spencer and will definitely stay here again on future trips to Portland. The location was perfect...walkable to everything we wanted to do and so many great restaurants, cafes, and shops around. Our room was wonderful and it was an overall exceptional experience!

Hotel had an older hotel feel but was comfortable with great seating areas. The breakfast was a nice extra and inexpensive. Service at the desk was very good.

The check in was smooth and professional. The wine and cheese hour was superb. The live music was amazing. Hotel is a class act.

I thought the Mark Spencer was in a good area to walk around and see Portland. It was clean enough and employees were kind. Mattress in our room needed to be replaced. I only weigh about 120 and I sunk into a hole every night. Their small café is out of most items but their barista had an awesome personality. Café not open everyday and parking available for extra fee. Good hotel, nothing fancy. Cheryl's on 12th is great for breakfast and Stumptown Coffee Roasters had great drinks. Both walkable from hotel.

Updated historic hotel in a great location. Easy to walk to shopping, restaurants, etc and close to public transportation. Nice wine snd cheese happy hour for guests. Comfortable room and convenient parking.

I had a really nice multi-night stay here. Perfect location to many stores and restaurants with parking on site (extra fee). There's a really cute wine and cheese hour to try a local wine and the room was extremely clean and comfortable.

Love this hotel. Second time staying here. Unfortunately though back in 2019 when I stayed for the first time, there was complimentary breakfast, not you have to pay for it. Still very delicious though. There was orange spots on the bathroom floor that seemed suspicious. The kitchenette drawers were t cleaned out totally. Other than those, love the room! Beds are super comfy, and amazing staff. Will book again in the future.
