Lumley Castle Hotel

Very good. Expensive bar and restaurant, but the service and quality are high. Could do with extending the available choices for dinner in the bar, the restaurant does get booked up.

Went here for 60th birthday celebration, we got in room early it was very nice intentional old fashioned feel. Stayed in castle part of building very quiet room, very warm. Had a few drinks and a bar snack at library bar very nice drinks later and the first round was on hotel for my birthday staff were excellent even got a late checkout. Fantastic day at Lumley Castle.

Parking was a problem due to an event,. Residents parking not safeguarded and had to park on grass well away from room on the exit road

I can not recommend this place highly enough. Sheer luxury. The bed was so comfortable, we literally just sank into it. The bath was also amazing, much bigger than it appears in the photos. The staff were friendly and helpful. We were allowed to explore the castle as and when we liked. It is definitely worth paying the extra for breakfast, there was a continental breakfast buffet, with pastries, meats, cheese and fruits. After that you also get to order a cooked breakfast. Plenty of gluten free options, just ask and the staff will be more than happy to help. There was plenty of onsight parking, which is completely free. There was a bar open in the evening and an onsight restaurant, but we didnt use these so can not review them. They looked cosy as we walked past.

A real castle, renovated and modernized with easy parking. The elevator doesn’t go up to the top floor where our room was, so if you have trouble with stairs, ask for a lower level. The restaurant was excellent so make a reservation.

Do NOT book a weekend night here - They have a new Tipi tent in which they have live music and discos, which is located 3 meters from the guest bedrooms. The noise is very loud and you'll not be able to relax in your room until after the bands have finished. Forget opening a window to cool the room (no air con - none expected of a castle!) No warning that this was a new 'feature', was expecting the normal relaxing evenings that we have grown to like and enjoy.

A 650 year old castle, what more is there to say! Stunning, beautiful environment. Staff are truly friendly yet professional and knowledgeable. The restaurant is marvellous and breakfast amazing (big thanks to the Assistant Restaurant Manager) … sadly a lack of Disabled Parking facilities which are not policed so seem to be abused. We have stayed on several occasions and intended staying again.

It seems silly to say that a castle is old fashioned, of course it is, but it is a bit like being in an old folks home; lots of rose pink velour arm chairs. Staff were great, the man at reception sorted out a couple of wrinkles for us, and breakfast wait staff were great. The breakfast is good; dining room is small because of the architecture so you need to pre-book a dining time. Our room, with four-poster, was the most expensive option but was very small, and while some people may say a basin and loo "hidden" in a wardrobe is amusing, others of us would say it's naff. Ditto the bath/shower in a corner of the bedroom, on a raised platform. Overall, a quirky stay, possibly lots of walking to get to your room but better to stay in the castle than the newer annexe. Approach with a sense of amusement.

Really unique property. Restaraunt excellent but pricey. Room rate quite reasonable considering type of property. Courtyard rooms are cheaper but probably more suitable if suffer from mobility issues.

We stayed in a courtyard view room and the room is in need of a good clean and upgrade. We reported that the light outside the bathroom was flashing and reported it to reception, asking them to fix it while we had dinner. On returning, we noticed that it hadn't been fixed so tried to use room phone to call them but it wasn't working. had to put lights out and just use the lamps which wasn't ideal. Evening meal was good and breakfast was lovely.

The single room was very clean and comfortable beds and pillows. The interior design looking very dated

Loved the location and the building itself. Staff service was really excellent and we enjoyed the food we had: breakfast, dinner and sharing platter in the bar. Our room was clean and serviced daily but the bathroom was really in need of attention. There was mould in parts of the shower, and it all looked rather tired and worn.

Cobwebs. Food crumbs under glass cover on top of desk. Wires hanging out of walls and switches. The furniture has seen better days, very tired and damaged. The place is lovely and would recommend seeing it. Don't stay til they've refurbished it though.

Room was very small and not clean at all. Looked like it hadn’t been dusted in months. Breakfast was ok but would have been good to get toast and ketchup before we finished it. Coffee was not great. Bar service was good and staff mostly friendly

I booked an overnight stay (for work purposes rather than pleasure) My room was in the courtyard and on the first floor which meant a sloping roof and exposed beams needed to be negotiated to access the kettle, window and one side of the double bed. Parking in the courtyard was limited so I ended up having to park about 80m away from my room (which felt like a very long way in the miserable wet weather!). The room was comfortable and the bathroom was lovely (nice towels and flannel, soap, shower cap and plentiful hot water). The location is very handy for Chester-le-Street and the A1(M). The weather was absolutely miserable during my brief stay so I di not take advantage of the beautiful grounds. Staff at check-in were friendly and efficient. I paid a very reasonable price for the room and would definitely choose to stay at Lumley Castle rather than a Travelodge or Premier Inn.

Check in wasn’t good , the directions to the room wasn’t clear, after 15 min of walking round the castle with two heavy bags we had to phone reception and ask them to come and help us . While walking round the castle we say lots and lots of dirty plates, cups glasses, left over food, outside peoples rooms and on windows sills. The stairs to our room were very difficult to get up. I ordered a bottle of bubbly and two glasses to the room as a SUPRISE for my husbands birthday. It never arrived even after me speaking to reception to ask if they could bring it up , when we checked out they tried to charge me for it. The room was dusty and the pot for tea coffee ect was absolutely filthy. Broken ornaments in the room, poor lighting , hardly any coat hangers, lack of attention to detail from house keeping, I would say, stains on the table and a very worn chair in the room. We stayed in the courtyard a few weeks ago and the room was amazing, we paid over £100 extra for this room and it was very poor. The staff are amazing, all extremely friendly, extremely helpful, polite, , the breakfast was very good , the cocktails in the library are lovely. We will definitely come back , but would only book to stay in the courtyard now, unless there is some updating work done in the castle rooms.

Room was lovely and clean. Area is very quiet. Setting is picturesque on an evening.

Very disappointing stay at what purports to be a luxury hotel but is overrated. Clear evidence of cost cutting has negatively impacted the customer experience A small example to illustrate this was only 3 small sachets of milk being supplied for a double room and only poor quality instant coffee available. I appreciate that we can ask for further supplies but why should we have to in a “luxury” hotel? I also suggest the cleaning staff check behind the bed in the room as the layers of dust suggest it’s been quite sometime since they did! However, the worst part of the stay was finding out that our room was over the function room where a wedding was taking place, with the very loud banging music going on until 1am. We had not been informed of this, despite booking the hotel over 2 months earlier On the positive side, all the staff we encountered were very attentive and did their best to be helpful.

Room very noisy, no sound insulation so could hear everything the people in the next room were doing. Room too hot, also the bathroom thermostatic valve was broken so the bathroom radiator couldn't be turned down (reported this to reception). Room otherwise comfortable but not 4*. Evening meal Ok although the desserts were disappointing. Overall would rate the stay as average. Stayed there 30 years ago and didn't meet expectations this time.

Staff really nice and efficient. Room was nice but bathroom was dated with a very noisy Victorian full toilet, and the room had beams and was small with very little headroom. Couldn’t get head under shower as it had to be positioned lower due to low ceiling.

Room very tired in need of upgrade. No cold running water from tap, kettle heavily stained, insufficient noise insulation between ground and first floor rooms. Stayed 1 night only as no other room available.

The room was upstairs in the courtyard and as such had sloping ceilings and beams. For one person getting out of bed meant having to slide along to the end before getting out to avoid bumping your head. Peopke with limited agility should be aware.The bathroom was large and clean. There was a small window which didn’t really let much air in. Overall we were happy with what we paid and the castle itself is lovely.

Possibly because it was for Sunday & Monday nights, our 2-night stay was exceptional value. Very comfortable dormer-style room across the courtyard from the main castle (glad we missed last week's mini-heatwave or it would have been hot - although there was a big fan provided). Excellent breakfasts with interesting choices as well as full English. Friendly and efficient staff. We didn't eat in the main restaurant this time but we know it's good; we just didn't feel our appetites could do it justice and it is quite expensive - good for a celebration meal though. We ate in town Sunday night then in the hotel bar on Monday - the steak pie, mash & tenderstem broccoli was excellent.

An enjoyable stay but we were disappointed that our room had no wardrobe storage at all so we had to live out of our suitcases. OK for one night perhaps but not satisfactory for a week!

It is amazing to stay in an actual castle, the building is beautiful and very atmospheric. The decor is mostly c.1990s set dressing but quite amusing and adds to the general character. Dinner was fine and breakfast generous except the coffee which could be improved. It was very cold when we stayed and the room was extremely well heated which was nice; only problem was the thermostat on the bathroom radiator didn’t work so it was on all night, making it so hot sleep was impossible!

Booked a double room for our first wedding anniversary, it took us over 4 hours to get there, we was given a very small room with very low ceiling, we couldn't get out of bed without hitting the ceiling beam, i felt claustrophobic, next day we asked for ground floor room but non was available, i asked for a upgrade they managed to find one but it cost me extra £90 which i thought it was to much, we went there for 4 nights it's already cost us near £400 now another £90, if they would have described the size of the room online i wouldn't have booked it, it was ment to be a special time for us, having to change room and pay extra made it not so special, i wouldn't return there again

Room was too warm even with radiators turn off, no AC, poor ventilation. No smart TV for Netflix etc. Breakfast portions too small

Unique as it was a castle, narrow passages and difficult at times to navigate your way around. Lift only goes to the first floor. There are lots of stairs if your room is on the top floor. It’s not for the more mature people if they are not fit. Bar area very well organized with excellent staff. Bedroom 56 very odd , shower and bath on a raised area in the corner of the bedroom! . Bar food ok but main restaurant limited choice, my lamb was very tasty but my wife had duck which she was unable to eat . The waitress did offer to take it back , Overall I would only give it 3 1/2 stars

Very cool to be in a castle! Waiting service needs attention. Slow and automatically placed 12.5% gratuity on bill. She asked if I wanted to take it off, but what pressure! Fix that the place is great!

Stay here alot and a lovely place. This time i felt short changed. Unable to book breakfast at check in (no space left). Electric sockets in room not working - maintenance fixed problem. Next morning went to make a cup of tea and Electric not working again. Room was £160, spent £400 on guest in restaurant yet morning after couldn't get breakfast or even a cup of tea in room.

The exterior of hotel was really grand with some stunning architecture. As this is a castle i was suprised at the detail right down to the richard the 3rd in my bathroom, clearly no expense spared. Breakfast was a grand affair right down to the back chat for missing my time slot. Warning dont you dare over sleep. The bed was comfy and welcoming more so than the staff.

Room was amazing but only issue it was way to hot after 1st morning waking with a headache due to heat i asked reception if could they maintenance team check the thermostate as he said he get someone to check sadly after 3 nights 2 morning waking up with heafache no one came. We had windows opened but never helped . Very upset However the hitel is amazing and food and cocktail excellent. But please sort room out few other talked about over breakfast . The staff were excellent, professional and helpful. Keith was amazing as wedding coordinator/liaison. Andrew and Sean at Reception were great. There was also a young lady in the restaurant, (young with strawberry blonde hair)unfortunately i didn't get her name, but she was wonderful. My only recommendation would be that it is sometimes the "little things" that can detract from excellence. That said an ancient building must require continuous maintenance. All in, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Lumley Castle Hotel.

What an amazing place! I've never stayed in a 14th C castle before. The location is very convenient and yet private in the beautiful grounds. I was in the main castle building on the second floor. There is a lift available but I used the circular tower stairs. The room was in a style in keeping with the venue and was both clean and comfortable. Plenty of hot water for the shower. The meals in the restaurant were excellent. This hotel has a wonderful welcoming atmosphere, the staff were very friendly and helpful, and is a great place for something out of the ordinary. I look forward to staying here again.

What an atmospheric setting. Nice to have details of the castle's history to add to the reality of the experience. Staff and guests all very friendly and good location for Newcastle and Durham etc.

Wonderful location and setting. The hotel leans into it's historic location. Beautiful flowers adorning the building make it even more impressive. Very comfortable rooms, excellent breakfasts and friendly staff. Very accessible for activities in the area.

Beautiful Castle in a stunning setting. Golf course there too if you are a golfer. Rooms I’d say are looking a bit tired but as it’s a castle I suppose it’s difficult to upgrade the furniture as then it would be too trendy I suppose. Friendly staff. Lovely walks by the river.

The hotel is really nice and we would definitely stay over there again. Kids loved it as it has an amazing space for them to run and enjoy. The are is so peaceful and quiet. The food is really nice and everybody was very warm and polite. Very happy with it!

This was my FAVOURITE stay out of my roadtrip around the UK, really fell in love with the place. It might be my princess side coming out but staying in a castle was such an experience. Highly recommend, the reception staff was so nice! We also had a drink at the library bar and ate at the restaurant which was delicious. Exceptional service all the way. It’s a hotel where a car is necessary to get around however, this should be considered when booking this hotel. This being said, I would visit again anytime!

Great property, diligent staff, easy parking and drivable in 20 mins to Durham.

Room and breakfast were a bargain, dinner quite pricey but very good, overall value excellent for a stay in such an historic building. I've marked it down, perhaps unkindly, on eco-friendliness given it would probably be impossible to double-glaze (etc) a Grade 1 14th century castle, but the heated towel rail was hard-wired and had no obvious off-switch, which I felt unnecessary and made the bathroom rather hot on a summer's night. Nice to have an open window in the bedroom though. The place must cost a fortune to run. Very pleasant staff, good breakfast choice, very handy for the cricket ground.

Business visitor stayed on prepaid breakfast - 1 coffee, 2 slices of toast - £24 - our visitors have asked us not to book them in here again.

Excellent hotel. Staff really friendly and accommodating. Can't do enough for you. Really nice staying in a castle. The castle and surroundings are amazing. The food was amazing, although quite limited and quite expensive.

Beautiful castle and the rooms are clean and very nicely decorated. The restaurant was sadly a let-down. The food wasn't up to the standard of it's sister hotel, Coombe Abbey, and the service in the restaurant was pretty poor. They didn't have the wine we ordered, so we ordered a different one, and it eventually turned up well after we'd finished our main courses. We asked to see the dessert menu, but after more than 15 minutes the menu still hadn't arrived, so we decided against ordering anything further and went to bed, deciding that it may have just been bad luck and that breakfast the next day would 'make or break' our view of the hotel. Unfortunately, breakfast was just as disappointing. The food was alright, but when we arrived at 9am (the time we had agreed at reception when checking in the night before), we were told that we were 'early' and that they only have two sittings for breakfast, at 7.30am and 9.30am. Two further couples that arrived just after us were told the same thing. We then had to spend our entire breakfast listening to the staff complaining to each other about how reception had got it wrong and that people turning up at different times were causing them problems. It made us feel really awkward and unwelcome. The restaurant was only half full. The key card also states that breakfast is served from 7.30am to 10.30am and not at set times. Overall, a lovely location and a fabulous room, but the restaurant experience spoiled it for us.

Beautiful setting, comfy bed but could be cleaner. The evening meal was nice but the breakfast was a let down. Small portion and obviously left to long on the pass as it had dried up. The drinks in the bar were extortionate.

This is a lovely hotel with a wealth of history and about the only fault I can find with it is the relatively expensive but poor quality breakfast.

Everything was great Except for breakfast. The service was poor.

Fantastic evening meal. Everything was just right, service excellent. Comfortable drink in the bar beforehand. All in all a very lovely evening. Room was just as shown, very good breakfast lots of choice. Would definitely stay again.
