Staff was mean, clearly hated and watched every sip or every sneeze. Made us feel uncomfortable. Even tho we were always gracious with thanking them and being respectful, they continued to act weird, we had to keep asking twice or thrice for something. It’s almost like they had something personal against us.

The hotel is very tired. The website does a very good job of making the hotel look luxurious and I would say that this is misleading. For the high price bracket, and the four star rating, we expected a lot more than we got. The room was dark, with scuffed/chipped walls, marked carpets and ripped curtains. The bathroom was dated, and again was chipped and scuffed and just generally looking old and tired. Plug in air fresheners were everywhere trying to mask the odd, damp smell. We didn't stay for breakfast and were quite shocked to find that it wasn't included in the fairly high room rate. There was nothing really wrong with our stay other than we thought we were in for luxury but instead got a scruffy room which is crying out for a refurb. We had little/no interaction with the staff so couldn't really comment on their helpfulness. We didn't see much point in complaining as there is nothing the staff could have done to make it better, it just needs some maintenance and upgrading. The grounds seemed very pretty and if we had been staying longer than one night, we would definitely have explored them. Overall, not good value for money.

Driving down the long drive the castle comes into view and its breathtaking! Vinny on reception was incredibly welcoming. Our room was phenomenal. There was nothing we would change. We ate in the restaurant on site on the first night and the food was outstanding. Breakfast each day was wonderful! To get into Edinburgh we were going to use the Park and Ride but Vinny said we could park at the end of the castle driveway and get the number 3 bus from there (turn left and the stop is there on your side of the road). This was a gamechanger. The buses come regularly and take around 30 minutes to get into Edinburgh. Bus back stops just opposite Melville Castle driveway then its a quick hop in the car up the driveway to the castle itself! This was a wonderful and relaxing stay in a castle of all places! Highly recommend. We will definitely be back. Oh and literally everyone was so friendly, not just in Melville Castle, but Edinburgh itself :)
