Northumberland Hotel

We got out all the way on the third floor. This hotel has no elevators so we had to drag our heavy suitcases over 2 flights of stairs and through narrow hallways and hard to open doors. Show was super small and cold water with low pressure. Bad smell in the property. The room window wouldn't shut completely so there were car noises when trying to fall asleep. Complicated check in process. Spend your money somewhere else for the price you pay here..

Good location; clean, updated rooms and great to have free parking - good value.

Front door always locked because no one often at the reception. No way to keep luggage before check in time, had to sightsee with it for 5 hours around Edinburgh. Shower water was VERY hot first thing in the morning, supposedly adjustable, dangerous! A room for eating meals locked most of the time, no easy access to the fridge or microwave in that room. Suggest could have had the room key fit the door! Great location for transit to the Royal Mile. Shopping centre around the corner for some purchases. Room with 2 beds, not a bad size.

Self check in and check out with detailed procedure by emails. Female staff on our first day of arrival told us the ways and directions of going to town centre. Free parking was available. Transport to town centre is just outside hotel and is very convenient. A shopping mall is just around corner. Restaurants just a short distance from hotel.

Cheap but clean & everything you need in rooms including usb port plug sockets to charge devices. Lots of parking available

Well located. Staff helpful. Very good public transport from front door. Free parking. Our car broke down while at the hotel and the staff were very helpful even after we had checked out

Walked through the front door to noone on reception,we had to ring the bell on the desk before someone arrived. We told him our name and was given a key to the second floor, as told enjoy your stay before he disappeared. So after struggling up the several flights of stairs and long corridors. (No lift) we got to the top of the building. Room no.20. On first impressions, looked clean and tidy. Then sat down in a very cluttered room and took everything in. Put kettle on have a cuppa, big crack it one of the mugs.Go to get a shower, the cubicle was so small you had to leave the door open so you could move. No grab rails, cupboard under sink to store your toiletries , just bare wall and pipes. Double bed had a part memory foam topped mattress, which on inspection ( see pic) was covered in urine stains. I approached one of the cleaning ladied and asked if we could have a different mattress, she told us this could not be done. And it would be ok because the mattress protector was clean on(which was not clean) i asked could we have a clean one to be told sorry but we dont have any! The beds thenselves were cheap metal ones the ones that are responsible for multiple bruises on knees and toes, because they were too big for the tiny room. Cheap hairdryer that over heated. No iron or board as stated. The room was hoovered once in all our stay curtains stank of cigarettes. Went down stairs to check out the dinning room. One shared fridge and wooden spoons and paper plates on the side.con

Microwave was removed from property, listing said it had microwave and refrig. The fridge was downstairs in dining room that was shared with all guests at hotel. Caused a huge inconvenience as we were unable to put things in the fridge after 10p and had no microwave to reheat. The prices were tripled because of the festival . The internet was out half of our time there. These 2 things caused us extra expenses (not able to eat left overs, had to pay for out of the country internet services while the internet was out) that we weren’t prepared to pay. Manager was no help with directions how to use bus services and was extremely rude. Housekeeping services were every other day. The housekeepers were awesome but the manager wasn’t available at the desk before 11a and after 10pm. I wouldn’t stay here again. 8 nights equaled $3,000 American dollars with no internet and no microwave . No fridge in room as claimed on sight. Will be filing a complaint with Expedia.

Pros: 1. Bus was directly outside of the hotel. Easy access to catch the bus to the city centre 2. Available free parking in the back if you have a car rental 3. Shopping center nearby 4. Housemaid made our beds every day 5. Reception provided a portable heater to keep the room warm 6. We have no issues with hot water. Cons: 1. Our room was facing the main street and we can hear cars passing the entire night. You will not get a good night sleep if you are sensitive to noise or a light sleeper 2. Walls are not sound proof and we can hear our neighbors talking 3. Inner drawers are not cleaned, I found items from previous guests 4. Our room window is cracked and taped to secure it. It needs a replacement 5. There are no lift/elevator access. Not suitable if you have disability or carrying large luggages

A main issue, for me, was the unreliable, unsecure wi-fi connection in my room. I complained three times; nothing was done. The manager explained at one point that the signal was better in another part of the house -- some help! Another major problem: part-time reception desk that did not even respect their hours of operation sometimes. Thirdly, miserly water pressure in the shower. Finally, thin walls meant I heard the neighbour peeing, talking, coughing and laughing.

Run down hotel, bathroom was not clean. Cramped bedroom with very little space. Not at all worth for the proce you pay (£170+ for a night).Not recommended.

We were greeted as an inconvenience to the staff that we’d dared checked in. The bed was comfortable and clean enough so if you’re staying for one night and need somewhere this might do but the room wasn’t particularly clean and the bathroom had mould all over ceiling and floor surrounding the toilet. It had the worst shower I’ve had in British hotels with a trickle of water you couldn’t even stand under it as the shower head holder was fixed in place. We didn’t even bother with it the second morning and checked out feeling a bit grimy to travel back home.

Room was filthy, carpet 10 years past replacement. Awakened by the sound of rodents in the wall. Room not cleaned between days except to clean excrement on toilet we complained about.

Hotel was really run down, carpets are so work you can see the threads, shower had no pressure and just trickled out. Windows let so much draft in, it was freezing in the room. I was also hounded by thr hotel days before my arrival for my crad details so they could take payment, on a room id booked to pay at the hotel? Paid £200 for a night, save your money and go to the travel lodge down tbe road.

Daily Room service only included making the bed. Bathroom wasn’t cleaned / wiped down, towels not replaced, nor were used dishes replaced. Significant mold growth in the ceiling and pink mold in the shower crevices and on the spout. Toilet leaned to the left as floors were very thin and quite loud. No fresh water supplied. Only condiment sized packet of soap supplied. Street noise and guest noise quite loud. Would not recommend.

This place is a hostel and should not be called a hotel. We shared a bathroom and no running water in the room. $140 really?

Value for money if you are fine with the 24x7 traffic noise from a busy road on which this property is located.

Stayed here as the first stop, for 3 nights, on our 12 night Outlander trip around Scotland. Room was very comfortable but a bit dated. Perfect as a base to explore Edinburgh though. Mall a short walk away for any essentials and buses stops right outside. Lost a few ratings stars as the traffic noise is very loud. Luckily we travel with ear plugs. Too: Request a room at the back of the hotel if you’re a light sleeper.

It was easy to check in. I was in room 14 on the first floor, room facing the rear of the property. Good sized room. Bedding looked clean and fresh and so did the towels. Bathroom was clean. I only stayed one night. My wife in ERI. I had previously stayed in Travelodge which is about 4 doors away. Far cheaper than Travelodge but also an older property. When I went to bed, I heard someone knocking on a bedroom door on 3 occasions and hoped that I wouldn’t be in for a night of it. Fortunately it stopped and I had a very good sleep in the comfortable bed. Complimentary coffee, tea, milk etc in the room. So to summarise, this hotel/guest house did exactly what I wanted it to do. The location is far from the centrum, but because of good bus connection it was easy reachable! Hotel was not really 3* hotel:( rooms are very old, door did not open well because of very old lock:( one day internet was not available:(

The room (sleeping 3) was clean and spacious. It faces the back, so it was quiet despite major road and traffic going by the front of the building. Convenient location: Shopping center with Aldi is in 10-minute walking distance, and bus stop with connection to the city center right in front of the hotel. (You don't need a car in the city of Edinburgh). Staff wasn't overly friendly. The gentleman working at the reception disappeared when he saw my heavy suitcase...So did housekeeping upon check-out. Please provide lock boxes in the rooms and some shelves in the bathroom. Overall, my stay was pleasant and served my needs. I would stay there again (with less luggage...;))

This place was exactly what we were looking for with a grocery store nearby and a bus stop directly in front. It was clean and comfortable and was exactly as described. The lack of AC was the only issue. Although the window was sufficient to let in cool air, it faces a very busy street which made for very early wake ups. Would stay here again.

Not for people that can't handle stairs. Doors are locked before 3 pm so if you land early you're screwed. The room was cleanish but I found hair from other people in the bathroom so I think they clean quickly.

This “hotel” was selected due to its proximity to the Royal Commonwealth Pool and as it had parking. We missed the information regarding having to pay 48 hours in advance of arriving and received and email on our way to say we had 2 hours to pay or booking would be cancelled. Upon calling the person on the phone was rude and said he could easily cancel the booking. After arriving and being given our room key, we discovered an inadequate room door and a dirty room. The carpet clearly hasn’t been cleaned or hoovered for some time. Further inspection found many stains. The beds were clean and comfortable, and the shower was adequate. Everything else was horrid! No one at the desk to complain to either as we were out early and back late. I would avoid this hotel like the plague!

Reception denied check in. We needed almost 40 terrible minutes to convince the receptionist that we had a valid Expedia booking. The room was clean but there was a permanent smell coming from the bathroom/sink. Internet connection was cut for one day. We could live with all that if the room would have been significantly cheaper ...

Treated with rude counter person. This place has pictures of a beautiful dinning room but does not offer food at all. Room was hot no circulation, windows won’t open. Internet was advised but non existent. Very disappointed with service and accommodations

Convenient transpiration into the city center, but don’t count on any amount of hospitality. The commitment to no early check ins goes as far as to just have the door to the hotel locked until 3, even when someone is sitting at the desk in front of you. There was a partial roll of toilet paper in our room and it took us over 24 hours to find someone to get more. No one services the desk, there’s a sign indicating to ring the bell if you need anything, but no bell exists. It’s a place to sleep, nothing more.

Staff were extremely rude, curt and dismissive. It was mostly unmanned with laminated signs to do everything yourself. Total disappointment!!!

Was presently surprised by the hotel facilities and our overall stay. Was nervous, as some of the other reviews were quite negative, but our stay was great , clean room , of decent size , that had everything we needed, and the bus stop is literally outside the hotel , so very convenient location , only 15 min bus ride from town. Would recommend.

I was pleased with my stay even though it does not serve breakfast. There is a small shopping centre with a couple of cafes a short walk to the left of the hotel. It is beside a busy main road. Plenty of buses take you to the centre of the city. I had a large family room for myself. Tastefully decorated in grey and white. There are 2 desks, one with a chair and two armchairs. A hairdryer and mugs, tea and coffee. The shower room/toilet is also quite large but there is no towel rail.

There was no staff to checkin at 1pm and no staff at checkout at 10am, I had bags which I could not drop off which was very inconvenient. No breakfast offered at hotel. Window in room was very drafty and did not offer any sound insulation from the busy road

The bed was very comfy however that's the only thing which was enjoyable. The bathroom which i thought would be in the room was past a glass door at reception and down the hall. The bathroom was covered in spider webs and the shower fell on me when showering. The curtains were covered on dust whoch i found out when i pulled them shut and got a face full of dust come down on me which went in my eyes. I couldn't tell reception about this as nobody was there. I had been at the hospital all day with my son and just wanted something to eat and a rest. There wasnt any guidance to where i could get food so i had to roam aimlessly in the rain u till i eventually found a Greggs. No breakfast was available so in the morning i had to go and search for a cafe over a mile away. As there was a dining area i did expect atleast breakfast. Very overpriced for what was offered. Unfortunately i wont be booking here again.

Lovely hotel and staff welcoming. Rooms are a good size. Lovely and quiet and beds are comfortable. The only downside is that the hallways are narrow and it’s difficult getting through the doors to room. This would be awkward if you had suitcases with you. Also, the hotel doesn’t provide breakfast which doesn’t make sense when it is called a hotel. I stayed for one night as went to Military Tattoo Festival.
