A Home Away From Home During a Difficult Season My family and I have been staying in Bakersfield for nearly 11 months while supporting our daughter through a serious, life-changing situation. We live in Los Angeles, so being away from home has been incredibly difficult. During this time, the Vagabond Inn on Colony Street has become more than a place to stay—it has become familiar and welcoming. I am a former Marriott-certified trainer and Front Office Manager. Throughout my hospitality career, I have lived by one philosophy: “Treat people the way you would want to be treated.” When training my teams, I often said: “Anyone can be taught a skill. Knowledge can be learned, but passion is rare—and genuine passion comes from the heart.” That “passion of the heart” is what I looked for when hiring and training. That is why I want to recognize Anna, Front Office Manager, and Eric, Graveyard Shift. Anna consistently shows genuine kindness and respect. She listens, tries to meet me halfway within property policies, and asks how I am and how my daughter is doing. Those simple questions have meant more than she knows. Eric understands how much I rush in and out for appointments and family responsibilities. He checks on me, makes small talk, and, when possible within procedures, has helped make checking into a new reservation easier so I can focus on my family.
