This was a cool hotel! Very quaint and lots of stores, restaurants, and bars within walking distance. Very quiet at night and I slept well. The historic elevator is pretty sweet!

Very quint and comfortable. Convenient parking and the hotel is right in Oldtown Placerville. The old elevator was amazing.

The kitchen had no supplies whatsoever but that was ok. We bought some utensils and plates at the hardware store across the street. The big problem was that there is no AC in October apparently and the room was extremely hot. They gave us two fans to use and that helped but there was no way to keep the windows open to get a breeze. Our little room was sweltering during the day!

It's over a 170 yrs old. It's Historic and it's dated. It's also rumored that it's haunted. Its not a resort and amenities are limited. Everything is in walking distance. You are smack dab in the middle of Placerville. Huge plus. Convenient. Staff is friendly and helpful.

We have stayed at the Historic Cary House for many years while visiting wine country near Placerville. It is very convenient and walkable to Main Street restaurants and to regional wineries. The hotel is clean and quiet. The front desk manager is very helpful.

This place is disgusting. It is literally the worst hotel I've stayed at anywhere in the world, with the possible exception of student hostels in developing countries 35 years ago (but at 30x the cost of those places). The lobby smells of "history" as one of the other guests commented. The front desk staff is largely unavailable (they are not there in the evenings after 8pm or mornings before 8am), and surly when they are available. We waited on our room being "cleaned" and when we entered, there was an overwhelming smell of bleach. It smelled as though the entire place had been sloshed down with buckets of bleach. Our eyes began watering within a minute of entering. We left as soon as possible, opened all the windows while we were gone, but it was not much better when we returned. There was hair in the ("newly cleaned") shower drain, and the water had a suspicious (metallic) smell, so we forwent taking showers. When we threw back the covers on the bed, the we found long human hair (not ours), rumpled sheets, threadbare bedding, and pillows that were probably 30 years old). All the bedding was synthetic and looki

This place was TERRIBLE! The desk clerk was passed out on the lobby couch, the bed comforter had stains, there was dirt running down the walls, paint peeled off the bathroom vanity, and filthy light fixtures. However, the room was newly painted, evident by the painters tape still stuck to the ceiling and paint on the fridge.

Our room was not cleaned properly. The shower curtains had filth on them and the comforter had stains and holes. I like the ambiance of the place but they need to replace the comforters and clean the rooms properly. Not sure if I would stay again.

So cool to step back in time. The room was clean, beds comfortable and the staff was helpful and friendly. I would definitely recommend this spot.

The place seriously needs some work. Our room had concave floors. It’s very noisy. We booked the hotel because it had a kitchenette, but there were no pots, pans, forks, spoons, plates, etc. the stove and stove oven worked but there was no way to use them without pots or trays. The carpets were dirty. The bathroom ceiling is dirty. The bed was uncomfortable. The building is beautiful, even the elevator is charming. The lobby is lovely to stop into. But I absolutely would not recommend staying here unless it were renovated.

Location was great, bed was decent, shower was good. Friendly staff. This whole hotel could use a refurbish. I know it’s a historic building, but the fittings in the room were neither Gold Rush-era historic nor up-to-date. The whole building had a dusty musty smell. Aside from these minor complaints it was a decent value for the price.

Everything was great except the refrigerator didn't work, and although there was a mini kitchen, there were no utensils or plates. There was only one kitchen thand towel. No paper towels or napkins. The room smelled strongly of disinfectant and isopropyl alcohol.

It was a lovely historic interesting old hotel. If I stayed again, I would request a room in the back though. I was facing Main St., and the noise level of Bar Patrons until 3am was very disturbing. Otherwise great place. The price was right. A continental breakfast would be nice too.

The overall look of the hotel was very cute and nice theme! It was very convenient as it was located right in the middle of the downtown. The main thing for my disappointing score was the super uncomfortable beds! The mattresses fell to a slope when laying on them. They were awful!

Loved the beautiful lobby and the interesting, antique elevator. Our room was small but extremely clean. The bathroom definitely needs an overhaul; the tub was clean but peeling paint made it gross. Never stay in a unit at the front of the hotel. Several bars across the street with biker clientele revving their engines until late. However, we loved that the hotel is right downtown near great restaurants, galleries, and shops. Ask for a room in the back!

This place was interesting 😆 I booked this place because of its location in downtown and it being close to the wedding we were attending. When we checked in, there was a sign that they were away helping someone but to call the number and someone would assist. We called the number and someone come down right away. The person who checked us in was very nice and helpful. She said we had to try the elevator at least once. We did and it is not your typical elevator. Very old school. It was cool! The room was a little disappointing. The floors sloped, the beds were sloped, candy wrappers around the windowsill, and the closet had smoke alarms laying around with no batteries (rooms are equipped with functional alarms). The lobby was pretty cool though with the decor and parking was very convenient. This is a good place for an overnight stay. Probably not the place for multiple night stay. Overall a good experience.

Historic venue. Rooms werent finished to historic time frame. 3 day stay wifi never worked . Requsted housekeeping after second night and was not completed. AC was noisy and had little to no control. I will not stay here again . Check out the lobby and history albums but dont stay overnight stay.

I had a horrible (that’s putting it lightly) experience with the front desk employee today. My room was booked a month prior. I showed up today close to 3pm to be told very nonchalantly Taylor did not have time to call me prior, but my room had extensive damage and I could no longer stay there. I asked what I’m supposed to do and she said she called the Best Western and they had one room left. She had time to call them though, just not me who showed up with nowhere to stay. Horrible in so many ways. I asked her what if I didn’t want to stay at Best Western (3 exits down the road) and she said she didn’t know what to tell me and that was my option. You’ve read this far, so if you’re jaw isn’t open from the utter lack of any good customer service and even care on her part how inconvenienced I was, then I don’t know what to say. I never raised my voice. What I did was let her know how unacceptable that was and Taylor had a classic tantrum and yelled at me to leave for harassment. She called 911, I met the officer outside and explained what happened inside. His response was finding out there was no room at 3pm checkin was wrong. I will never recommend this hotel, but I will let every one I know about this experience. Absolutely horrible with the weakest way to even help accommodate me.

You’ve read this far, so if you’re jaw isn’t open from the utter lack of any good customer service and even care on her part how inconvenienced I was, then I don’t know what to say. I never raised my voice. What I did was let her know how unacceptable that was and Taylor had a classic tantrum and yelled at me to leave for harassment. She called 911, I met the officer outside and explained what happened inside. His response was finding out there was no room at 3pm checkin was wrong. I will never recommend this hotel, but I will let every one I know about this experience. Absolutely horrible with the weakest way to even help accommodate me.

Historic hotel with kitchenette...awesome We had to look for alternate location as1st choice could not accomedate disabled family member. Carly & Katie at front were the best ever! Really took care of us. Romero the maintenance man was equally helpful. One of the best experiences ever.

Really enjoyed our stay at this historic hotel. The history behind it is very fascinating and the decorations went along with that. The front staff Carrie was so super friendly if we are ever in Placerville, we would stay here again.

The door was locked when we tried to check in. We had previously received a call from the front desk and confirmed that we would be arriving around 7pm. We were told that if we arrived after 8pm there would be nobody at the desk. We called when we arrived and the person manning the front desk was “on break” and not in the hotel. We waited 10 minutes out in the cold for him to show up and let us in. Aside from this, the hotel is clean. Beds and pillows are so-so. Decor is very tired. Excellent location.

Horrible service from desk clerk. I asked for a checkout receipt and was told no. Upon asking for manager to explain why, they called police to evict me. Police actually provided me with managers contact info. Treated a paying customer checking out early like a criminal!

The building history is cool. The elevator was small old and cute; It adds character to the stay. Tracy was working up front and was very helpful.

Overall good. Great location, and wonderful history surrounding this hotel and the setting. We had some issues with our room, both tv's did not work. We let the front desk know, they came up immediately to check it out. They were not able to get the tv's to work so they moved us to another room where everything worked. I commend the staff for quickly responding and accomodating us due to the situation.

We love the history of the Cary House. We love that it is right down town old historic Placerville. The night life is loud so you may want to consider a room facing back.

Loved the beautiful lobby and the interesting, antique elevator. Our room was small but extremely clean. The bathroom definitely needs an overhaul; the tub was clean but peeling paint made it gross. Never stay in a unit at the front of the hotel. Several bars across the street with biker clientele revving their engines until late. However, we loved that the hotel is right downtown near great restaurants, galleries, and shops. Ask for a room in the back!

Nice hotel but in hot weather cooling system takes a bit to cool the room. Staff was kind enough to provide a fan for the room. Walkable location near shops and restaurants. Easy parking in the back. Friendly staff. unique rooms with decent sized rooms for a hotel built in 1857. 2nd oldest elevator west of the Mississippi River.

The staff was AMAZING. So kind and happy to chat about the property. It’s definitely historic but clean. No frills and comfy beds, and you can’t beat the location. Thank you Cary House for a great 4th of July weekend stay!

The hotel is a beautiful space and the staff is very nice. A couple of things with our visit. First, we requested housekeeping each day at checkin and yet it did not happen. Minor annoyance. More importantly, we found the AC in our room inadequate on a couple of hot, though not record hot, days. That is a big issue for me and the main catalyst for the men review.
