Booked La Fonda in Taos to be near restaurants and be in a place with a little history/character. When you book a hotel like this you expect some quirks. The room was classified as a suite and had a separate sitting area and bedroom with the bathroom in between. The bathroom was a bit of an issue, as it is at a higher floor level than the rest of the room (a step up.) The bathroom tub/shower was safety issue with a tub bottom that had no mat or non-skid and was pretty slippery. There was a mini-split type AC unit in the bedroom that was set at 64 degrees when we got there, but depite that it was pretty stuffy in the room and it seemed to run constantly without making any difference. The room seemed reasonably clean, but the wood floor areas need a good scrubbing as evidenced by what light colored socks picked up when walking in the room. The hotel charges $10 per night to park in a gravel lot behind the property. There is access to the back of the hotel from the lot, but there are spots in front of the property for loading/unloading. The elevator is in the back and closer to the back parking lot but gravel is not luggage or luggage cart friendly. On the day we were checking out, access to the street in front of the hotel was completely blocked at about 9:00am. I am guessing there was some sort of event that day, but there was no way to get a car from the parking lot to the loading zone in front of the hotel. Front desk was unaware and no help with the issue.

It is an older hotel but well maintained and all the room amenities functioned correctly. Unlike newer cookie cutter hotels, there was a nice coffee shop and art shop right off the lobby. Upstairs there was a delightful “living room” with comfy seating and a fireplace. All this in the heart of Taos.
