Old Abbey House

The car parking is a disaster … I doubt half the guests will be able to get there cars out as some cars have been abandoned, not parked.

I had a small room on the top floor but it was clean and had everything I needed. There are no elevators either so keep that in mind. Check in was electronic through a kiosk. The location was convenient in town with a lot of walkable dining options.

Lovely modern spacious room with kitchenette and comfy bed. Parking with electric charger. Located in fabulous quiet back lane right next to ruined abbey and metres from both River and town centre. Hope to stay again. Carpet could do with a shampoo, head board not fixed properly, tv aerial not plugged in - all minor. No reception or dining, but automatic check in easy peasy. Will stay again.

Hotel is a bit of a misnomer for this place: it is nice and convenient but it certainly is not a hotel. Guesthouse would describe it best. The check-in is automated and there is nobody on the premises. For a stop it is nice if you don't need the fascilities of a regular hotel.

How odd that there is NO one who works there. There is a bank like machine that gives you your key, but no one who actually works on site. The room was great, very quiet and quite large, but no people on site. Breakfast and dinner at the Crown and Thistle were great and a 20% discount but you must ask.

I stayed at the Abbey on 2 separate occasions in the same week so this review will cover both. The hotel rooms especially on the 2nd night when I had a kitchenette were excellent. It was an exceedingly hot night and they left a fan which was fantastic. When booking this I didn't overlooked the fact that this hotel is 'unmanned' because I was unaware such things existed. That means there is no bar, no restaurant and no people or atmosphere. For people used to that I would expect its no problem. Abingdon is a quiet sedate sort of place with a rich history in the old part of town so its easy to see none of the above would prove a problem to type of people attracted to the town or hotel. But for me the system doesn't work. On the first night I left my charger in the room and couldn't get it back. I had to email the hotel who contacted housekeeping who said they hadn't found it. That meant that it was probably still in the room but I couldn't get it back. Systems like the above are great when they work but if they don't it is the individual not the hotel or staff who are impacted. It only works when it works. If for some reason you lost your key or locked yourself out there is no easy remedy. I'm sure it works for the hotel who don't have to pay staff etc but the risk is all to the customer. Having said that the rooms were excellent the hotel quiet and as I say the second night the room was fabulous. But I lost something easily retrievable and spoilt my stay.

We stayed at the property while visiting the Abbey Buildings for an event. I was initially uncertain when I realised that it was a self check in and there weren't any staff, but actually it was fairly straightforward to get in. The hotel is beautiful, really lovely decor, stylish and clean. The setting is lovely and we had a nice view of the Abbey Gardens. The free parking and EV charger were great as well. We would definitely stay again if visiting the area

The apartment was lovely. Very clean, really good size. Only negative was the parking. It’s a free for all. There’s a tree in the middle of the car park which creates a round about. Someone parked one side of it the whole time I was there. And then someone else parked the other side too making it impossible to get out of my space. Had to wait for one of the cars to move before I could leave.

We absolutely LOVED this property! Historic and updated all in one place. The bathroom was pristine. Beautiful and clean. Can’t wait to stay again.

Beautifully designed and decorated rooms. Warm and scrupulously clean. A very quiet, private place. Couldn’t fault it.

check in was painful as I never received an e mail with the hotel booking number only the Hotels.com itinerary number which didn't work . I had to contact Hotels.com who eventually provided what I asked for after a frustrating interaction with virtual agent . The room was ok but no desk so it meant i had to work on the bed . TV signal was intermittent so could not watch . Towels smelt a bit damp . As a basic a bottle of water in the room would have been good

Clean room

I had a fabulous ground floor room overlooking the Abbey gardens. The room was immaculately clean and very comfortable. I had an excellent night's sleep in a very comfortable bed. It had been a very hot day and someone had thoughtfully been in to prepare the room accordingly - the windows had been opened and the blinds pulled down to shield out the sun, for which I was very grateful. My only issue with the hotel was that I didn't see a single member of staff the whole time of my stay. The Reception area remained completely empty and blank from my arrival to departure. My check-in was all done using a machine, whereas I would have preferred a personal welcome and for someone to do the check-in for me, especially as I had trouble using one of the systems and there was no-one to help. I made myself a cup of tea, but needed more milk and there was no-one I could ask to provide this. Eventually, I had to leave the hotel and walk to the supermarket just to buy milk for my tea. As a woman travelling alone, I felt uneasy about the lack of staff at the hotel, particularly as I went to bed. I would have felt a lot safer had I seen hotel staff at the Reception desk, especially in the evening. It all felt a bit odd and unsettling.

To be honest with all of the reviews for the property and the price we paid we expected more. No housekeeping or daily clean was something I did not expect but maybe my fault for not reading the details. Parking was always a fight if you drove around during the day and came back late. Our room stunk of cigarettes and because we were by the hallway, everytime someone walked by, the firedoor would slam shut and wake us up. The 10am checkout time is also a first for me usually most places are 11am? Room size was very spacious and clean, but those few things were a bit of a let down

The old Abbie hotel has been extensively refurbished in the last few years. It’s a fantastic location where you only have to walk minutes to the Central Square and to the River Thames, with many amenities nearby. I booked two rooms and asked them to be located next to each other no problem. They were next to each other located on the ground floor even better. Automated self check-in was fine with me at the age of nearly 63 but there were people struggling and there’s no staff at the kiosk in the hotel. Once we had the swipe key for our rooms, we went to the rooms. Unfortunately, the room that my son and partner were sharing for two nights there was a massive big brown stain on the beautiful carpet which was grey. In my bedroom in the bathroom, I noted a large tile which was off the wall. I contacted through like a messenger on Expedia to the staff who kindly came and had a look at both rooms and took photographs. This was in the evening before we went out for a meal. Neither of these issues stopped us having a good time in Abingdon. Because it was the weekend nothing was done to remedy these faults which I believe in many respects, somebody in their team must’ve known about these faults before they rented the rooms out. I’ve been speaking with the team through Expedia and they have been very helpful. Would I stop in this hotel again? The answer is yes because I know that the teams work hard to make things right but. The rooms for the Price should’ve been immaculate

After a stressful afternoon caused by some hotel booking foul ups we got a last minute booking here. Once in the room both of us felt an air of calm and relaxation. Both had a really good night’s sleep. As we didn’t stay in a suite with a kitchen we ate at the Crown & Thistle less than 100 metres walk away. Looking back on our stay there was an aura of monastical peace and tranquility. Next time we are in Abingdon this will be our place to stay.

Nice stay very clean and tidy. easy check in system-very quick. Only issue we had was the WiFi wasn’t working from the password in the booklet

Beautiful building right in the centre of town with quite a bit of parking . Big comfortable room. Everything was high quality. Only problem was the heat in the room was 28/29 when i came back at midnight and I couldn't operate the thermostat to make a difference.....

One of the worst hotel experiences I’ve had. Zero service. Poor room layout. Terrible heat/cooling. Lack of tea and water. Terrible sound acoustics from court yard with window open to cool room. The place can only be described as a business hiring out rooms with a bed but nothing else.

Really convenient location for all of Abingdon’s amenities. Room was spacious, clean and well presented. Kitchen facilities would have been useful if we were staying longer.

Automated check-in dispensed a duplicate key to a complete stranger who didn’t check his confirmation email for room number and then tried to assert rights over my room. Most disconcerting.

Lovely place to stay. Rooms finished to a high standard. Everything you need is within walking distance. Make sure Expedia have emailed the entrance code. They forgot to send mine. It was sorted promptly by the hotel staff, needless to say after a long drive you dont need the bother.

Comfortable stay. Convenient location. No staff though - more like an E-Hotel. We booked 2 rooms and could only check into 1. Had to call a helpline to get into the other room. Otherwise, good sized, clean and comfortable rooms in the centre of Abingdon.

A beautiful Abbey property within very easy walking distance of the centre of Abingdon though so quiet you wouldn’t believe that. Well appointed clean and comfortable SMEG kettle so quality throughout

This is the hotel right in the center of the town. It is so convenient to everything you needs among the shopping streets, dining, parks, running trails, and buses to Oxford and surrounding areas. We enjoyed staying at this affordable price for our vacation. The only thing we have is not enough air circulation inside room, nor the corridor. So, room temperature is much warmer than outside even open the window.

Great property with clean, well laid out room. We loved staying in such an old historic building, with new rooms and amenities. Located in the old town area, it is walking distance to restaurants and cafe’s. The market on Monday’s was an unexpected bonus.
