The Scotsman Hotel

Great stay! I would especially like to recognize Ivan! We arrived with 8 pieces of luggage as my daughter was moving to Scotland for University from the US. Ivan handled all of our luggage upon arrival. It was in our room upon check in and promptly picked up and loaded into our taxi for departure- wonderful! We also LOVED our experience at the in house movie theater!

Once we found and settled in to the hotel it was a very pleasant stay. There is construction at the main entrance and you need to used the market street entrance especially if arriving by car. There is a taxi park where you can stop and have the concierge come down and take your luggage (you will need to go up and fetch them) and then the car park is just down the street, about a 5 min. walk back to the hotel. Our room wasn’t ready as we arrived early, but our bags were brought up to the room and we had a quick bite at the restaurant. The room was comfortable and clean. The staff at the hotel and the restaurant were great.

Great hotel and wonderful location. Only negatives were one of the lifts were broken meaning you couldn’t reach street level in the lift & you had to wait a long time as everyone was using one lift (which was tiny!). Also due to the building work on both bridge cars are unable to stop at the front making it very awkward for loading and unloading. The other issue I felt having breakfast in the breakfast room rather than the Grand Cafe was a real shame. Rooms were beautiful and very comfy & staff were lovely.

Great hotel! Loved the historical aspect, but the rooms were historical/modern - great bathrooms and wonderfully large shower with very cool fixtures! When you check in, realize you are on the 4th floor. It was a bit confusing when we checked in, took off to our room and then wanted to leave - we tried the Ground floor, 1st floor, 2nd floor, 3rd floor - gave up, went down to the ground floor again outside the back of hotel next to the train station (super convenient) and walked around the block back to the front door. Ten min later, we learned the error of our ways! LOL Recommend to front desk staff to let guests know this little detail upon check-in :)

A little disappointed. Elevator 1 was out for our entire stay and we had to personally haul our luggage up 4 flights, bed was extremely firm, robes were stiff and scratchy, our air went out and window wouldn't open. Hotel provided us with a fan. Lobby area quite small. Location was excellent - right by the train station and bus station and around the corner from the Royal Mile. The young staff was efficient. Good coffees and teas in room along with sparkling and still water daily and 2 samples of Scotch upon arrival. Good lighting in bathroom with a make up mirror that was located in a perfect place for optimum use. Wouldn't classify this as a luxury hotel

Our stay at The Scotsman was spectacular! We took advantage of every amenity in the hotel: the daily breakfast buffet, dinner and drinks in the Grand Cafe, a movie in the movie house, and the wonderful ambiance. Our room was beautiful, and every single staff member went out of there to be helpful and welcoming. We will be back!

You cannot ask for a better property than The Scotsmen Hotel. The grand look and atmosphere really make you feel like royalty. If arriving by train (which I highly recommend), the train station is right across the road for your convenience with bags. A little tip, the door that is on Market Street that looks like a service door will lead to a lift so you don't have to trek up the mountain of Scotsmen Stairs with your luggage. Just out the other side of the hotel you are not even a whole block away from the royal mile, which is amazing. And the location is perfect to get to New Town as well. Definitely will be back when we come for another Scotland visit.

Pros: 1.Gorgeous hotel 2.Grand Cafe (with great live music, good food and drink, but very slow service) 3.The Picture House cinema is wonderful 4.Fantastic breakfast buffet Cons: 1.Trouble with lifts during our stay 2.Hotel is difficult to navigate, with winding passages and corridors. Better signage would help. 3.Construction and road closures during our stay made transportation pick-ups and drop-offs difficult (not hotel's fault).

Excellent hotel but access with construction is very difficult

Wonderful hotel with a great location. We loved their picture house. However parking is offsite and unloading is a problem.

The hotel is dated, the carpet is probably 40 years old with all kind of stains. The furniture is filthy uninvited. The room was not very clean upon our arrival with hair all over the place in the bathroom and toilets. The area around is under construction and had limited car access, needed to roll luggage on street to access the hotel. The room advertised by expedia did not exist or made unavailable to us.

We loved our stay. The room was lovely and very clean. It was nice and quiet and very relaxing. The staff were super friendly and did their best to make sure we had a great stay. Would definitely stay again!

The rooms were nice but the carpet outside out our room needed some cleaning. It kind of looked like someone may have vomited and it left a bad stain. Small amount of hair in the shower. Some water damage on ceilings but probably to be expected in such an old building. It was truly beautiful though and concierge was amazing. There was construction during our stay and unfortunately a lot of noise on the 2nd floor all during the night. After moving to the 6th floor, there was no noise. I'd definitely stay here again.

The hotel is quite stunning, the service was amazing, and the Grand Cafe is lovely. I absolutely loved the room, and the addition of a hair straightener was really great. My only criticism is the state of the carpets throughout the hotel, they seem old and have clear stains.

The hotel is beautiful inside . My room was lovely and spotless . The hotel was clean . Most of staff at checkout are task oriented and their attitude does not reflect the level of service I’d expect in this prestige hotel therefore I will never be back . Also a hammering noise at 10 pm that went on for a good twenty mins wasn’t welcome . The waiting staff were very polite and friendly unlike the reception staff .

We had a three night stay in a room on the 9th floor. It was beautiful! Spacious, clean and had an interesting layout. Not a room for someone with mobility issues. There were 8 steps up to a spacious bathroom and additional steps up to a raised section of the room. Located close to major attractions and a 8-10 minute walk to the tram. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was fair to good. Breakfast was good with many options. Staff were friendly and helpful.

The staff was very helpful and friendly. The room was very cozy and clean. The shower water pressure was amazing and I loved the towel warmer. I could of used Extra pillows which I'm sure if I asked I would have received. I would definitely stay there again.

This is a beautiful property with very friendly staff. We enjoyed our stay but it was unfortunately spoilt by the fact that there was bed bugs in our room and we left the next day covered in bites.

The room was beautiful until you looked closer. It was absolutely filthy. I walked in the front door of the hotel and the door opposite had beautiful moulding. Unfortunately it was so covered with dust the top was an entirely different colour. When we got to our room it was the same. I picked up the throw blanket at the foot of our bed to find a long black hair and lots of questionable bits on our lovely white duvet. The carpet was the worst. I couldn’t walk on it without slippers or shoes. Disgusting.

The view from the room was truly spectacular. The room had stains on the carpet and on the chair. Staff was mediocre.

It was awful. There was a wedding on one of the nights I stayed and the music was so loud in my room I could clearly hear the lyrics. It went on until 2 am. When I complained they told me they would comp my breakfasts, but they still charged me for them. Never again.

The best location for traveling to Edinburgh as its walking distance to everything. The rooms were beautiful and the bed very comfortable. Would recommend this hotel to all.

A great location and beautiful hotel rooms but some rooms didn’t get wifi service because of poor connections and they didn’t have enough toggles to give the rooms which didn’t get wifi service. We had to move rooms after our first night to another room which was inconvenient since we only stayed two nights. When you check in, make sure to ask if the room has good wifi connections.

Our room was absolutely beautiful, with a gorgeous view! Unfortunately the heating did not work at all in the room, and we tried phoning reception at night multiple times and no one would answer, so my husband had to get dressed and go at the reception desk at midnight to get some help. We were given a portable heater, however this was very loud so we couldn’t keep it on all night, so we really felt the cold throughout the night. Besides this, the hotel, the room and the facilities were absolutely beautiful!

I was a bit underwhelmed by the property. We contacted the staff about a problem with the heater and they said they would have maintenance address it but no one ever did and they didn't offer us a heater for our room until our last night there after we had brought the issue up multiple times.

We had 2 very small issues. 1 the wifi was spotty and 2 the soap dispenser bottles don't work well, but overall the these are minor.

Unfortunately this grand hotel has a very loud rock music pub on back side so don’t get a room on the backside of this hotel unless you want loud music til 2am :/ the room was spacious and nice except we couldn’t get our sleep and staff could not do anything about it ; also glad we waited to rent our car too we were leaving Edinburgh bc parking is horrible ; we used uber everywhere !it us walkable to so much history and shopping , pubs & the castle ! We had a “salad” in the resyuranut which was over priced and not so great

Lovely old hotel, in great location, but in need of much TLC. For the nightly price, it should be nicer quite frankly. We were given a new room right away bc the room they gave us on the 8th floor had a toilet that was already clogged before we got there. They tried to fix, but couldn't so moved us to a smaller, less pretty room, which was a stinker. Beds are SO firm, like brick. I couldn't sleep any of the 3 nights we were there due to the bed firmness. Rooms are also so HOT, the temp gauge doesn't work at all. The lift is so teeny tiny and always about 26 people trying to get in. Pretty hotel, but not worth the money at all.

The wifi didnt work throughout the whoe stay but a good hotel in a great location

We felt unwelcome at check in, reception didn’t mention facilities or dining options despite us booking in for 3 nights. The restaurant informed us they didn’t take walk ins. Then the fire alarm went off in middle of night. Despite alarm getting guests out of bed around 4.30 am nobody was around to help us or check we were okay. I had tripped leaving the room as the furniture is bulky and cluttered. The hotel didn’t acknowledge the unsettling incidents of the fire alarm or offer an apology or any type of recompense despite it being a known issue related to their restaurant. Returning to our room some guests were fuming as this was the second time during their weekend break their sleep been interrupted by this faulty fire alarm going off. From our first night our wash hand basin was full of stale water and we reported it needed fixing. Nobody came to do this. House keeping didn’t come in first day and only emptied the bins on second day. Breakfast room was badly thought out. The tables for two were very small and close together and nobody wanted to be seated at them. The background music was loud and guests had to raise voices to be heard. The breakfast was a hit or a miss but okay and you wouldn’t go hungry. Staff were friendly.All in all I could have cried that I’d made such a mistake choosing this hotel for a special occasion. It was on my bucket list of places to stay. I’ve always admired its looks and assumed it would be as good as the other iconic hotels in Edinburgh.

I enjoyed my stay at the Scotsman. The staff was wonderful, especially James the concierge. James was able to unexpectedly, and without me asking, get a last minute reservation at Makars Mash for dinner. He was also able to recommend the best store to purchase a kilt and got me a discount on my purchase. Thanks for making me feel like family while staying at the hotel.

Great staff, friendly unobtrusive service, would happily stay again.

Warning! Do not book this hotel as it is an absolute con-job! Was called 5 minutes before check in time to tell me the hotel was overbooked! Offered us an upgrade at another hotel but it wasn't an upgrade. Waited 5 hours before they actually paid the other hotel so couldn't check in a room. This hotel has a history of this. Please just Google it and you will see others like myself. Absolutely shocking and disgusting!

Beautiful hotel and excellent location. Right across from the train station (2 mins) and all of the cool places were just around the corner. The bathroom was amazing! With built in speakers, a heated towel stand, rainhead shower and a double vanity. BUT the service was non existent… we walked up 9 flights of stairs with 2 suitcases because we were not aware that there was an elevator from the street. We were exhausted when we got to the hotel. The reception staff was very nonchalant and instead focused on getting our credit card for payment. In our 3 days, none of the staff acknowledged us or interacted with us. In fact, they did a great job of blatantly ignoring us. Only on the last day, as we checked out, a nice young man named Ben interacted with us. Sadly, though the location and elegance was amazing, I would hesitate to recommend this hotel. They need to train their staff better and improve the service level.

This is a lovely hotel in an excellent location: a converted historic building right next to Edinburgh Waverley train station. It would have been a wonderful stay except for one thing: when we arrived, after a very long series of flights, they wanted to kick us out. The receptionist said that they had overbooked and we’re going to send us to another hotel. I had booked months earlier, specifically for the location, and found this to be outrageous (and still do). After much argument they finally relented and allowed us to stay in the hotel we had booked and paid for. The rest of the stay was great, but what a terrible way to treat guests.

We originally booked and paid for this stay via Expedia. Unfortunately The Scotsman Hotel double charged us. After some work it seems they will credit us back. The restaurant food was very poor.

Connor was the best. Friendly and very helpful in helping me with tours and with cabs. The receptionists were the best too. Highly recommend this hotel if staying in Edinburgh

The start here are amazing! Jessica upgraded us to a suite upon learning it was our 45th anniversary night and the hotel sent champagne. Thank you Jessica and all the hotel staff. Today, the staff member at the desk was so kind as well..did not catch his name…so helpful! Loved our stay so much we canceled another hotel on Friday to come back here.

Excellent location. Super close to Waverley. Easy walking to both new and old towns.

I loved this hotel! It is a few steps to the Royal Mile and quick walking distance to the castle. It is in the heart of the area where you want to be. It is beautiful and the staff is very helpful. The hotel is across the street from the main train station. July 2024

Hotel is in the perfect location from which to explore Old Town and New Town. There are lots of restaurants within walking distance. Staff was very polite. Negative would be the noise at night. We stayed there over a weekend and there was street noise/partying until late.

The room was very nice. Breakfast was Ok. Lots of construction in and around the hotel. The best thing the hotel offers is its location which is wonderful. You can walk to train station. Maybe 30 meters.

The room was great. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Great location by Waverly Station and close to shopping and a variety of pubs in walking distance. Parking is the only challenge at this hotel if you’re renting or have a car as you’re parking at Waverly station. Not far but about a 5-10min walk from hotel. Would still highly recommend this location.

Overall we had a very positive experience. The only wobble was trying to get a drink in the Grand Cafe later in the evening. The bartender ignored us and we eventualy left. Other than that, a lovely visit.

Absolutely fantastic hotel. We will be coming back. Great location. Beautiful architecture and design. The room was large, comfortable and well equipped. I wish we had stayed longer. Highly recommend. And the bar, restaurant and breakfast were all amazing. Best fish and chips we’ve every had, and I’m from England!!

Very basic room, not in the least like the twin room expected from your website. Hot buffet breakfast very unappealing with tray of fried eggs hard and rubbery. Scrambled eggs a slightly sweet taste All told very disappointed in our stay. Certainly not worth the £300 plus . Expect more than this.

enjoyed our stay overall. at checkin we were told our room was small and asked if we wanted to upgrade. we declined and were delighted with our cosy room on the 8th floor which offered fantastic views across the city. staff were all very helpful. our only disappointment was breakfast on the first morning which cost £22.50 each. some of the food on the hot buffet was shrivelled and the fried eggs were set hard....disapponting for a hotel of this standard at that price.....even a premier inn cooks fried eggs freshly for their customers! when asked if everything was ok we replied no, told them what the problem was and the staff agreed to fix it thefollowing day, which they did. The hotel is very central and ideally situated if travelling to Edinburgh by train. Had it not been for the issue with breakfast, this would have been a rating of excellent.

Top notch service and accommodation. Beautiful room and the staff went above and beyond. This was our second stay at the Scotsman. Only disappointment was dinner. We both had the tenderloin at 55 pounds a plate. Very overpriced. The tenderloin was very overcooked and a poor cut and very thin.

Large room that was nicely appointed. Wonderful service. Great location. Breakfast was excellent as was the other attached restaurant that served lunch.

Absolutely lovely hotel right in the center of Edinburgh. Beautiful, spacious and well appointed room. I loved the complimentary hot chocolate in the lobby. The staff was helpful and friendly. The restaurant was also lovely and amazing with my daughter’s food allergy. We can’t wait to stay again!
