Lovely hotel, really impressive building, close to train station that takes uou to the heart of Edinburgh. We really enjoyed our stay and the swimming pool and the steam room. I would definitely recommend.

Beautiful grounds, old hotel but well kept. Very good breakfast served, staff was very friendly. The swimming pool was one of the best, the view from the pool was also great.

When we checked in we were told that the pool was closing at 3.30pm that day (check in from 3pm). This was the main reason for us choosing this hotel. We should have been notified of this. We'd have stayed elsewhere for half the price had we known. Nobody apologised, or seemed bothered.

Great stay visiting Edinburgh for 4 nights, the hotel standard is good with spacious family rooms, great gym & pool facilities and 20 drive to the park n ride car park to get into Edinburgh.

It’s a lovely hotel, great gym and pool and sauna. Breakfast is fantastic. Rooms I’ve had in the main tower and nearer the pool have all been good. Dog friendly and now has EV charging!

Nice countryside hotel. Friendly staff, great free parking, good breakfast, spacious and quite surroundings. Some big groups made timing of breakfast important. The use of the swimming pool, gym and spa was a great bonus!

Hotel and room was superb and couldn’t recommend it highly enough. The staff were superb, particularly the reception staff that couldn’t do enough for us. Breakfast was excellent and my partners dietary requirements were well looked after. If you are just looking for a room and dining hotel it’s a must not miss. The thing that lets it down awfully are the really poor standards in the leisure suite. The changing room was dirty, the toilet cubicle was filthy, the shower area was really grimey, the sauna clearly hadn’t been cleaned as there was clumps of long brown hair on the floor and in the gaps in the slats, the large metal posts at the bottom of the swimming pool that held the pool cover and coated in rust, I stepped out of the way of a running unsupervised child and put my hand on one to balance and my hand was literally coated in rust. Kids were everywhere and largely not supervised pulling the drain covers up and chucking them into the pool and running round it. Please note the leisure facilities aren’t exclusive for the users of the hotel, they have private members and it’s rowdy and under supervised at weekends, definitely one area to avoid.

Very disappointed to say this is Supposed to be a 4 star hotel. The "spa" facilities are very poor, no whirlpool/jacuzzi, steam room was out of order and sauna was packed full of gym lads. Changing rooms were also crowded and unclean. We had no towels on arrival and had to ask 4 times! At reception before finally getting some. Bathroom was not cleaned at all during our stay, would have been nice for cleaners to at least give the sink and toilet a quick clean.

Where do I start... Struggling to find any positive experience staying at Houstoun House. I dont tend to leave feedback and have travelled for years. Cleanliness Horrific throughout the entire hotel, inc. hallways, room, lobby, bar, restaurant. The hotel smells damp everywhere. The bar was probably the worst smelling. The pint glass even smelt dirty, putting me off drinking my beverage. Mould everywhere. Condition Wallpaper ripped off everywhere, stained carpets and filthy walls. Paintwork shocking everywhere. The entire place needs a complete refurbishment. Room The room i stayed in...dear me, this is the first time I wanted to check out as soon as possible as the room was shocking. - Mould everywhere in bathroom and bedroom. - electrical sockets ill fitted with holes exposed. - Bathroom tap missing handle. - clumps of hair in the carpet (and hairclips) - Terrible smell - stains and dust all over the interior units Comfort 2 single beds pushed together - Bed sinks when lying on it - Sheets didnt look clean and looked slept in - Old furniture, Glass top on drawer table sliding off when trying to work off it. Service - Not the best. The breakfast staff were like robots and programmed to say the same things to all guests. - £4 surcharge for most of the cooked breakfasts - £4 surcharge for anything other than tea or coffee (ie latte, cappuccino etc) I could honestly report more but my fingers are getting sore of typing. Will never stay at this hotel again thats for sure.

Lovely tower house, nice setting and convenient location. I stay with work but the usual problems with Macdonald hotels - lack of investment, the place is quite run down. This time my room was also not very clean, floor was filthy - even found a pair of tweezers which were in the middle of the floor and looked to have been there a while! Staff are always helpful and doing their best.

We arrived weary from travelling for over 12 hours and in need of a sleep. We were met by a very friendly face at reception and given our room details. On opening the door of our room (no 23) we could smell damp but to be honest the need to sleep for a couple of hours soon made us blind to the smell. On wakening a few hours later though and the heating on in the room the smell was terrible. So much so my wife was having a little trouble breathing. On inspection of the room there was damp and mould on the walls and in a cupboard. In that cupboard was two large packs of disposable dehumidifiers. The room was certainly not fit to be in never mind paying for it. I asked about it at the reception and they knew nothing of the damp or mould problem but were quick in offering a more suitable accommodation. I do hope they sirt out their damp problems and omit guests from the room till they do so. Otherwise a nice warm and friendly hotel.

HH never fails to deliver ! We have been frequent visitors over the years and it really feels like a home from home. The staff are always exceptionally ,professional, yet still take time give each customer the personal touch. They all deliver above and beyond , a prime example of quality customer service ! The rooms are spotless, warm and inviting , the grounds are just a delight to relax in a testomony to the housekeeping staff. The spa is worth booking in for too !! Thank you once more to manager Andrew and his team for your exceptionally hospitality.

Such a comfortable bed, room was immaculate, staff were superb and so friendly and helpful. As I was leaving each morning before breakfast was served I was given to option of a breakfast bag which contained plenty to keep you going till lunch. All facilities are excellent and kept to extremely high standards.

Hotel needs a good refurb, my room had rotten bath panels, woodwork was dirty. Radiators loose and falling off the wall. Toilet paper holder falling off the wall, bathroom Sink was cracked , radiator valve taped on .

Room hadnt been cleaned properly, with crisps and a toothbrush cover left under a cushion on the sofa! Also, maintenance being carried out with no notifications/warnings nor safety cones displayed.

Great stay, close to train station to get to Edinburgh. The breakfast was prefect, order what you want from the menu and it’s all fresh and the service was amazing, can’t recommend this hotel enough, will defo be back, if I would change anything it would be the bed was 2 singles put together so could feel the gap so was just like sleeping in single bed even tho we are married and I would prefer a single bed for my daugther not just a pull out bed. But other then that was a fab stay

Not suitable for families. On both nights of our stay, close to our room they had wedding parties. Very loud music with DJs shouting until almost midnight. Defeated the whole point of the hotel as a place to rest after a day in Edinburgh. Room was dated with small sofa bed. Swimming pool was nice and staff there were pleasant. Management were not interested in our complaint about loud music.

Nice big rooms. The building my room was in was a little dated in decor , carpets and doors could do with a lift. The room itself was well appointed. Beds were a little soft. Staff very friendly, evening food very nice as was breakfast.

Beautiful property friendly staff 30 minutes from Edinburgh drive. No ac, can open window nice enough in summer. No elevator- carry luggage up 3 flights of stairs. - probably the main negative Dated needs renovation but clean- does have a nice enough tub to enjoy a bath. TV does offer Netflix etc Restaurant/bar is very cozy wine cellar vibe but not much available service wise only one staff between restaurant upstairs and bar downstairs at night. The grounds a pretty - gardens and wildlife are abundant. Can see golf course but not easily. Parking easy and safe.

TV does offer Netflix etc Restaurant/bar is very cozy wine cellar vibe but not much available service wise only one staff between restaurant upstairs and bar downstairs at night. The grounds a pretty - gardens and wildlife are abundant. Can see golf course but not easily. Parking easy and safe.

Was close to the airport and convenient. Our room did not look like the photos in the ad and was shabby. Toilet didn’t really flush. The walls seemed thin and we could hear people arguing in the hall and in neighboring rooms. The bar was cozy and the food was decent.

We stayed as a mum and daughter in room 73, which was a king room. Room was very spacious, and if you like a super soft bed then you’d love it, however the bed was far too soft for me. Small window, but at the end of the day I’m not in the room to stay all day, we were out and about anyway so didn’t bother us. Decent shower with ok pressure, liked it has Elemis products in the bathroom. Walls are pretty thin, could hear a lot through the walls, including people using hair dryers at 11 at night. We decided to eat in the bar for dinner and ordered a Caesar salad, pepperoni pizza and Mac and cheese side, was tasty. Breakfast was a bit of a let down, the bacon roll was decent but the continental was a bit rubbish. The pastries were hard and not fresh, same with muffins. Water was tepid at best. The pool was the highlight, nice size and half was blocked for one swimming, with the other for families. Area was nice and clean, although shower was low pressure so ended up going back to the room for a shower. Didn’t use the sauna or steam room but they looked good. Overall the place is nice but run down, with nice staff. The photos have been taken very cleverly as none of the property looks that new or fresh! Probably wouldn’t go back

We stayed at the hotel as a family of four for one night in May. The service we received was amazing. We arrived really early morning and asked to leave our luggage in storage but instead they offered to quickly set up our room so that we could check in properly and leave everything in the room before venturing out. Once back at the hotel we used the pool and children loved it. It’s warm and clean and they have some swimming aids in the pool area that we could use while there. The beds were super comfortable and bathroom clean. All in all we had an amazing stay! Thank you Chloe and team!

I had a wonderful recent stay at the Macdonald Houston House, and I wouldn't hesitate to book again. Indeed I already had as this was my second trip there. Even before arriving, the reception staff were incredibly helpful in quickly resolving a minor issue with my booking. When I turned up on the night, everything was perfectly set up, which I really appreciated. Throughout my stay, the staff continued to be friendly and always willing to answer any questions, making me feel truly welcome. The room was spacious, the shower hot, the bed comfortable, and the tea and coffee replenished daily. Oddly I cannot comment on this hotel as when we arrived we were told there had been an incident in our room that afternoon and we could not stay there, but they had booked us into another Mcdonald hotel 20 minutes away. We fud seem to have much choice so repacked our car and drove 29 minutes in the wrong direction. The hotel we ended up at was called Falkirk but was actually in Grangemouth in to the refinery, nothing like the Scottish manor House we had just left. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the food good but not the same. We also found we had been lied to: 1. It wasn't an issue with the room as 5 rooms had been moved to the other hotel, overbooked maybe! 2. They said they had tried to contact us but they were no calls, messages, texts on our phones Not a great experience.

at check in it was ok receptionist was friendly & polite, Had to walk outside to the annex for our room in which i was not aware when booked. Bar for drinks is very expensive and bar maid kept disappearing, Strong smell of cannabis at reception & bar area in the evening which was not very nice and staff were not interested. Restaurant was like a morgue food was not nice very over priced waited a long time for food to arrive, staff were not helpful had to keep asking .Breakfast was disappointing again had to keep asking, When checking out did not get asked if our stay was ok. Overall the hotel is very tired and NO i would not come back again

We were just here for one night before flying out of Edinburgh. It was a great alternative to higher priced hotels near the airport. There is a bus stop right outside this quaint spa-resort. It was clean, cozy, and well-maintained. I would recommend.

ace to enjoy some peace and quiet just outside the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh. It’s easy to get into town using either a cab, bus or train. However, the hotel does not offer a shuttle to the train station (1/2 hour walk) or to the airport. Also, my wife and I are an older couple. The property is not very friendly or easy to navigate if you have large luggage or accessibility issues. No lifts - lots of stairs and uneven walkways.

We had a great stay at this hotel. The design is really unique and stylish, a mix of different building types set in a beautiful garden. It’s also conveniently close to the airport, which made our travel much easier. The breakfast was excellent with a great variety of options, and the service overall was very pleasant. But what truly was amazing was the kindness of the staff. My daughter accidentally left behind her small plush puppy dog, which is very special to her and to us. The hotel not only found it, but mailed it back to us. A huge thank you to Chloe, who went out of her way to help, we’re so grateful! Highly recommend this place!

Expedia says there are laundry facilites on-site. This is NOT accurate. They do have an off-site laundry service, but it takes at least a week from pick-up to drop off. Do not rely on this for your laundry. Our room was interesting as it was definitely an older building, but the bathroom was newly renovated. Very close to a public bus stop if you want to use public transportation.

Booked during the marathon weekend and the price was relatively cheap compared to others in the area - breakfast was also included so that makes it even better. Good place to stay to get into Edinburgh as the bus stop was right outside so overall a very nice place to stay.

This was our first stay in Scotland after traveling from the USA. The property was beautiful, easy to get to especially navigating driving on the opposite side of the road than what we are used to. Everyone was kind, welcoming and super pretty property. We all wish we had more time here to further explore the beautiful property. Only heads up - watch the heavy bags my friends no lifts up the stairs. :) We ate dinner in the bar which was super yummy and the atmosphere was very relaxing. Breakfast was one of the best that we had on the trip as well. Highly recommend signing up for breakfast - chef was really great...especially on dinner and I loved how many options there were for those with allergies - we're dairy free!

Fabulous historical hotel , excellent room and bed was very comfortable. The staff were excellent and very friendly and helpful. Our only concern was the quality of the restaurant. The menu was weak and the quality of food was not as good as expected in a four star hotel. This is a shame as the hotel overall was first class , we would return, but very much doubt we’d use the restaurant unless it can Make improvements. A special mention to the lady on the front desk , who was extremely attentive and cheerful.

Really disappointed for the price food was awful throughout first evening ate in the vault bar took over and hour for main courses to arrived and food was poor, breakfast not worth the money at all hardly any options and most things have a £6 surcharge really poor quality and portion sizes.Ordered room service macaroni cheese inedible dry and cold on arrival. Hotel could be lovely but looks tired we arrived and checked in to windows open in hard rain and carpets and sofa bed all wet. Sofa bed in terrible condition really sad as we stayed here in 2019 and it was lovely but needs a make over a better food for somewhere so isolated

Pool and sauna etc all great. Staff are nice enough, service can be a bit slow. Food wasn’t great. Burger was average and expensive. Children’s mini pizza wouldn’t be eaten by majority of kids, including mine - strong Gruyère cheese (or similar) with a base of sundried tomato - too salty and too strong a flavour for kids. Breakfast was the biggest disappointment - porridge was like soup with lumps, couldn’t eat it. Pale sausages with no colour, I was worried they weren’t cooked, scrambled egg was also inedible. So much of a stay in a hotel is about the food, so it was a let down.

Sadly the hotel was not worth how much we paid. The room was cold, storage heaters meant the heating only came on when you put the card in the slot. We go moved no problem but we paid for a premium room and sadly it wasn’t that. Staff were helpful and dinner in the restaurant was lovely. Breakfast was disappointing being served brown avocado on toast. Breakfast not worth the extra money.

The food and staff were amazing! We felt like we traveled back in time and were treated like first-class guests. It's close to bus stops that can take you to the city centre of Glasgow and Edinburgh. It was a great stay for my husband and I. I highly recommend adding the breakfast that is served every morning instead of the simple continental. Wendy, our server, was fabulous. Also, if you need a taxi the hotel can arrange it, Ubers are not popular. For people wanting to bring families, I must warn this was definitely a more mature hotel experience. The pool, gym, and spa are not designed for young children; they are meant for a quiet, relaxing experience. We did not have any children with us, but noticed that the spa area rules didn't allow splashing, jumping in the pool, or anything that might disturb others. Outside of that, for adults, this was a fantastic place to stay. It is a historic hotel, and like most of the UK, there is no air conditioning, so keep that in mind. The garden was beautiful and fun to walk around after dinner. I wish that the garden had more variety of plants to look at and the well (fire pit?) was managed a bit more but other than that it was a fantastic stay and we would definitely rebook.
The food and staff were amazing! We felt like we traveled back in time and were treated like first-class guests. It's close to bus stops that can take you to the city centre of Glasgow and Edinburgh. It was a great stay for my husband and I. I highly recommend adding the breakfast that is served every morning instead of the simple continental. Wendy, our server, was fabulous. Also, if you need a taxi the hotel can arrange it, Ubers are not popular. For people wanting to bring families, I must warn this was definitely a more mature hotel experience. The pool, gym, and spa are not designed for young children; they are meant for a quiet, relaxing experience. We did not have any children with us, but noticed that the spa area rules didn't allow splashing, jumping in the pool, or anything that might disturb others. Outside of that, for adults, this was a fantastic place to stay. It is a historic hotel, and like most of the UK, there is no air conditioning, so keep that in mind. The garden was beautiful and fun to walk around after dinner. Beautiful spot in a historic old house. Staff were absolutely lovely. The irritant was a stream of messages beforehand but not answering my own questions. A really weird one was they kept running out of key ingredients at breakfast like brown bread and tomatoes. I’d advise going early because they do run out of things fairly quickly . A nice pool was a real bonus for the kids. Lots of EV chargers too.
