One of a group of condos with a small pool and hot tub -- originally part of a golf course development now closed. Beautiful location with ocean views from the patio. Well maintained and comfortable. The black sand beach where one can usually see turtles is a short walk away. There is a lifeguard there but few people swim. Be sure and stock up as there are no grocery stores of any size nearby. The Volcano Park is a 1/2 hour drive and the green sand beach near south point is spectacular though not accessible by car. Locals offer a bumpy truck ride for a fee. To summarize: a restful and comfortable destination away from the crowds.

A few minutes from the turtles at Punalu’u Black Sand Beach and an easy drive to Punalu’u Bake Shop and South Point. The pool area is beautiful and a great alternative if swimming at the beach is too rough and rocky.

We loved our stay here. The home is perfectly situated near the black sand beaches but away from the hustle and bustle. The grounds are beautifully manicured and you can see the ocean from the back patio. We enjoyed the views and relaxing in the hot tub at night. Only thing we would have liked to have was better beach equipment. Overall we were extremely pleased and Jeff was easy to communicate with and quick to respond. We would definitely stay here again!

This is a unit in a small condo development less than 10 minutes walk to the black sand beach where green sea turtles are easy to see. It is in the most private and secluded position on the edge of the development overlooking a former golf course and set back about 200m from the rocky beach. The unit is comfortably furnished and has everything you would want for a short or a much longer stay. The owner has provided lots of extras like books on local fish, hikes etc. The kitchen is a bit dated but has all the essentials. The bed is comfortable. The development is very well maintained with a nice pool, BBQs and lovely gardens. There is a great little restaurant in a nearby small town—Naalehu. The volcano national park is an easy day trip. Very good value compared to other accommodation we had on the island.

This was the third leg of a two weeks stay, so our review is colored by our other two stays; after spending seven nights at a quiet ranch on the Kohala ridge and four nights off-grid south of Paoha, three nights at an older resort was... different. Please read our review understanding that; this place is perfect for some people, just not us. Wonderful and friendly employees, but the stay did not fully match the description. For example, the shower and bathroom sinks were recently replaced, but the rest of the unit is older, just like the property. Everything was clean and there were a lot of supplies in the kitchen, but it seems like the owners must not have looked in the cupboards in a while; for example, the one skillet was so scratched that the anti-stick was gone down to the metal. The view of the lanai is wonderful but with little privacy; other people frequently stood twenty feet from our chairs. smoking away on the lawn (and then throwing their cigarette butts over the fence, in the dried grass. A bit unsettling for a forty year firefighting veteran.) The pool and hot tub area was impeccable, but I could not tell you how the water was in the tub: it was usually busy or completely full, especially in the evening when a group of younger folks (who seem to live in some units) occupied it while loudly pontificating about how mean the locals have been to them over the last year.We rented STVRs around the globe during more than two decades, so we have fact-based opinions.

The views from the lanai were fantastic! The condo was clean and functional. Jeff was an outstanding host, and very responsive to my message before, during and after our stay! We would highly recommend this property to our friends and family!

Return visits say it all. We love this unit. Stayed here previously in 2015 and 2018. Glad to see it was available for our week in the Big Island this time. Well appointed and equipped. Everything clean and in working order. Great location nearer Volcanoes National Park than Hilo or Kona. Scrumptious bakery just up the road. Great black sand beach. Miss the golf course but the condo complex is well maintained and quiet. Hope to return again.

My wife and I traveled to Punaluu as part of a special anniversary trip. The condo is comfortable and stocked with pretty much everything you need except food. The nearest real grocery store was about 30 minutes away. A few of the appliances could use updating, but the living room furniture is new and comfortable. We didn’t watch much television, but the one tv was small for a vacation rental. The condo is in a great location on the south end of the island, about 30 minutes from Volcanoes National Park, a little over an hour to either Hilo or Kona. The black sand beach, with it’s sea turtles, is only a 10 minute walk away. Jeff, the owner, was communicative and responded quickly when we needed him.

Beautiful condo in a great private location very close to black sands beach. We could hear & see the ocean from the lanai. Gorgeous views. Private backyard, although we were surprised one night with a group of people walking through the backyard which isn’t on a pathway. Guess they were enjoying the beautiful views too as seemed they were just walking whole perimeter of condominium property. Bed was super comfortable & shower is huge. Really nice place to stay. Views are amazing & we so enjoyed listening to the waves crash. Easy to check in too. Great stay!

Wish we had kleenex and more than one trash can. Kind of expected some kind of mid week cleaning. Overall the location was nice. Guess air conditioning isn't something in any of the units. Humidity was oppressive a lot of the time and we were gone most of the mornings and early afternoons.

Wonderful, relaxing property off the beaten path. The condo is exactly as described. Very comfortable with everything we needed. As others have mentioned, it is not a quick trip to a grocery store or restaurants, so come prepared. Internet access was good and consistent, which made our working holiday possible. Our host, Jeff, was quick with responses to questions and a gracious host. Everything went very smoothly. Highly recommend.

This unit had the best view of the whole complex. We sat for hours listening to and watching the ocean. It was a short walk to Punalu’u Black Sand Beach and a 10 minute drive to Na’ahilu where you can find a couple of cafes and the famous Punalu’u Bake shop. South Point was also close by and the National Park is only 35 minutes away. It does get warm in the unit in the daytime but there are plenty of fans to keep it cool at night. A perfect quiet getaway in the southern part of the Big Island.

Property is a great place to stay to getaway from it all! Great amenities ( pool, hot tub, incredible view. Be aware there is no a/c ( not too bad if trade winds are cooling the place, otherwise it can get prettt.The fans were defns are deforest bc needed

We enjoyed a one week stay in this unit, a 2-bedroom, 1-bath condo. The owner has accented the home with nice touches, including art and cut flowers in the living room and dining room. It has a nice sized living room and dining room. The bedroom is large, with an on suite which is shared with the rest of the unit. The bed is very comfortable. The kitchen is small, and needs some item replacement, such as a mixing bowl set, a properly working can opener, enough matching glassware for more than two people, and a sharp knife set would be helpful.More lighting in the living room is needed. Perhaps 3-way bulbs in the lamps at both ends of the sofa, to make reading easier. I would love to see a larger television, sitting on top of the cabinet housing the current one.We loved the secluded, private lanai. It overlooks the former golf course and has a good view of the ocean, in the distance. The lanai area is fully under a new, expanded cover.

Beautiful place to stay! This rental had the BEST views and we loved seeing the sunrise and sunset with the ocean. One thing I did not see before renting is that there is not any air conditioning. The owner has ceiling fans in the rooms and additional fans, plus almost every window opens to allow the ocean breeze to come in. We were never uncomfortable! It was super close to the black sand beach, and close enough to Volcanoes NP. We would love to stay here again!

Mahalo Jeff, We completely enjoyed our stay at Hale Ke Kai. It's a fabulous location both island wise and within the complex. Unobstructed views of the ocean and the old golf course. The unit is very well stocked, spices in the kitchen, linens, paper products and Aloha. We spent a week here and felt revitalized when we left. It's one hour to Hilo, 40 mins to Volcanos Natl. Park and a hour and a half to Kailua-Kona. It's a bit remote and that's what we wanted. We will stay here again in the future if available. Jeff is a great host with excellent communications. We really enjoyed our stay at Hale Kekai. We had a tv problem and Jeff was quickly responsive in solving the issue. While it turned out to be unsolvable, it didn't impact our stay at all but he made it up to us regardless. The pool area is was never busy and had a beautiful view. We walked to the black sand beach and had a great time seeing the turtles. We would surely stay again!

The condo was perfect for two. All the neighbors were friendly and we did visit the black beach once. We were out adventuring every day as the condo is about 30 minutes from Volcanoes NP and 1.5 hours from adventures in Kona.. Naalehu had a good farmers market and we stocked up on fish, fresh bread and fruit. Naalehu is about 15 minutes. The nearest larger grocery store is in Ocean view, 20 minutes from the condo. The condo had all cooking needs covered, beach towels, fins and a boogie board. We had coffee on the patio with a view of the ocean every morning. Also, the ceiling fans moved air nicely and kept the condo comfortable.

This is a nice quiet place on the south end if the island close to the black sand and green sand beaches. It is a great place to relax and a good place to serve as home base when exploring the island. This unit has great view from the back patio.

This is an absolutely lovely property and location. I loved sitting on the patio and listening to the ocean and the birds in the morning and evenings. It’s close to Volcanoes National Park - it’s absolutely perfect if you plan to spend a lot of time in the park. We got up early each day and made it to the park by 7AM and had all the trails to ourselves. That alone is worth the stay. The black sand beach is within walking distance and you’ll see green sea turtles and nēnē wandering around. It feels a world away from any other part of the island. The condo was older but clean and well taken care of. Really, it’s perfect. We loved it so much and I hope we’ll come back again. Jeff was also wonderful. He stayed in touch and was always friendly. I really can’t recommend it enough! I wish we had stayed longer!

A great base camp to explore everything the big island has to offer. Far enough from the crowds around Kona, but convenient enough to everything from hiking to snorkeling. The property is well maintained. Evening trade winds help keep things cool overnight.

This was a great area to stay if you want a nice, secluded part of the big island. Right by the Panulu'u black sand beach and close to Hawaii Volcanoes NP. Great way to celebrate our anniversary!

This is a unit in a small condo development less than 10 minutes walk to the black sand beach where green sea turtles are easy to see. It is in the most private and secluded position on the edge of the development overlooking a former golf course and set back about 200m from the rocky beach. The unit is comfortably furnished and has everything you would want for a short or a much longer stay. The owner has provided lots of extras like books on local fish, hikes etc. The kitchen is a bit dated but has all the essentials. The bed is comfortable. The development is very well maintained with a nice pool, BBQs and lovely gardens. There is a great little restaurant in a nearby small town—Naalehu. The volcano national park is an easy day trip. Very good value compared to other accommodation we had on the island.

This beautiful property is a bit off the beaten path, and is a great place to stay to get away from the noise. We really enjoyed the quick walk to the black sand beach. This spot is also situated perfectly between Hilo and the Kona airport - so it is easy to do both sides of the island with ease.

Great location between Hilo, Volcano National Park and Kona. We were lucky enough to witness the 29th episode of the volcano erupting. Volcano national park was about 25 minutes away. We spent 1/2 a day in Hilo, 3 days at Volcano National Park (waiting for volcano to become active) and a day in Kona. Great place to get to see all of these with moderate driving to each one.

One of a group of condos with a small pool and hot tub -- originally part of a golf course development now closed. Beautiful location with ocean views from the patio. Well maintained and comfortable. The black sand beach where one can usually see turtles is a short walk away. There is a lifeguard there but few people swim. Be sure and stock up as there are no grocery stores of any size nearby. The Volcano Park is a 1/2 hour drive and the green sand beach near south point is spectacular though not accessible by car. Locals offer a bumpy truck ride for a fee. To summarize: a restful and comfortable destination away from the crowds.

My wife and I traveled to Punaluu as part of a special anniversary trip. The condo is comfortable and stocked with pretty much everything you need except food. The nearest real grocery store was about 30 minutes away. A few of the appliances could use updating, but the living room furniture is new and comfortable. We didn’t watch much television, but the one tv was small for a vacation rental. The condo is in a great location on the south end of the island, about 30 minutes from Volcanoes National Park, a little over an hour to either Hilo or Kona. The black sand beach, with it’s sea turtles, is only a 10 minute walk away. Jeff, the owner, was communicative and responded quickly when we needed him.

We enjoy this little cottage- it was quiet and peaceful and had a wonderful view of the sunrise in the mornings and the ocean. The quick walk down to Punalu’u Beach was nice and we saw turtles almost every day. Even though there wasn’t AC (which we knew) it cooled off at night and we slept fine. You’re close to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park; however, not much else. I’d highly recommend the Tuk Tuk Thai Food Truck in Volcano and the Punalu’u Bake Shop in Naalehu- both were excellent. There were a few insects at the condo- the deck must have an ant colony somewhere under the cement that should be addressed. Despite that, we would definitely stay again. 😊

This unit had the best view of the whole complex. We sat for hours listening to and watching the ocean. It was a short walk to Punalu’u Black Sand Beach and a 10 minute drive to Na’ahilu where you can find a couple of cafes and the famous Punalu’u Bake shop. South Point was also close by and the National Park is only 35 minutes away. It does get warm in the unit in the daytime but there are plenty of fans to keep it cool at night. A perfect quiet getaway in the southern part of the Big Island.

We loved our stay here -- a great place to stay to be closer to things on the southern and eastern part of the island. Easy day trips to Hilo, Volcanoes National Park, green sand beach - and the black sand beach is right there. The view from the place cannot be beat. Pool and hot tub were great too! One thing we didn't pay close attention to - this spot is really on its own - bring food with you or just know there are limited options (and the ones that exist close early) for restaurants or grocery stores. Not a minus - just important to know! Hosts were responsive and helpful. We loved this spot!!

We enjoyed our stay in this condo, it was the perfect break from the busyness of Kona. Nice layout/furnishings and the patio is such a great private location in a peaceful complex, with a neat view of the old golf course and ocean. Great hot tub just down the sidewalk. Close to Punalu’u black sand beach and we also liked Whittington Beach park, which was not far down the road, and of course the easy access to the S/SE corners of the island - we were glad we stayed on the south end for part of our trip to cut down on days spent driving. Abnormally wet weather impacted the entire island during our stay but we still enjoyed sitting under the patio awning, and the slopes to the north blocked the wind so it was much more pleasant here than some areas. The road to the west was flooded on our way back to the Kona airport, but it was probably easier to drive around through Hilo in the rain anyway, so no big deal. Host was super responsive and easy to work with.
We enjoyed our stay in this condo, it was the perfect break from the busyness of Kona. Nice layout/furnishings and the patio is such a great private location in a peaceful complex, with a neat view of the old golf course and ocean. Great hot tub just down the sidewalk. Close to Punalu’u black sand beach and we also liked Whittington Beach park, which was not far down the road, and of course the easy access to the S/SE corners of the island - we were glad we stayed on the south end for part of our trip to cut down on days spent driving. Abnormally wet weather impacted the entire island during our stay but we still enjoyed sitting under the patio awning, and the slopes to the north blocked the wind so it was much more pleasant here than some areas. The road to the west was flooded on our way back to the Kona airport, but it was probably easier to drive around through Hilo in the rain anyway, so no big deal. Host was super responsive and easy to work with.

We loved this condo and it's location. The condo is more private than most of the other units, has a great view, close to the pool and is very well equipped.
