While this is a very unique and beautiful hotel I was not that impressed overall. There is really no good way to get from the parking ramp to the second floor where our room was. You take one elevator and then you have to go all the way to the lobby to another elevator to continue up. The room we stayed in was very large but they had no desk area where you could set up your computer. There was no room refrigerator or microwave. The chairs were pretty uncomfortable. The bathroom looked like it was added on and was totally open at the top. And, it's very noisy, a lot of traffic outside, so if you're a light sleeper, bring a noise machine. I would not stay here again.

Clean hotel, very comfortable bed, friendly efficient staff. The restaurant is terrific. Beautiful and light and inviting. Food and drink were excellent. The speakeasy bar downstairs is atmospheric while also warm and cozy. It was a real pleasure to stay in this historic hotel. Highly recommend

Very cool historic hotel. Great restaurant, free parking ramp, very comfortable bed and pillows. Close to train tracks so we did hear trains overnight but we knew that beforehand.

Amazing. As usual. Love every thing about the St. James. Especially enjoy the Scarlet Kitchen for breakfast and dinner. The Port for a night cap and lively conversation with our favorite bartender Lori.

Wow, so very unique! We went to the Spa and that was fabulous, the hotel is historic and just so much charm. The restaurant also was fabulous. Great service in all areas. Would love to come again.

The St. James delivers on its reputation as a premier hotel in Red Wing. Excellent service from the front desk, restaurant staff and bartender in the Speakeasy. The free parking garage is a plus, especially in an urban setting. Loved the vibe in the basement level Speakeasy. It was a very busy weekend and we got the last available room (translation = not their best). We found the bed to be way too soft and way too hot. All that aside, this property is a historical delight and worth a stay.

We have stayed here in the past and recommended it to friends. The best thing is the location. However, the property has seen better days - the room was very dark, the bathroom was dirty and the wallpaper beginning to peel from the walls, to name three issues. The WiFi was also erratic. The staff at check-in was barely “present”, same at checkout. We were never asked how our stay was. We will no longer recommend this property to our friends.

Also, I had expected a little bit better room as it was labled "Premium" and it was no bigger than any other hotel room I've ever stayed in. It was simply a hotel room with 2 queen beds. Otherwise the room was clean and comfortable and staff was very accomadating.

We enjoyed everything about our stay, including all of the historic displays and items throughout. The only complaint the both of us had, was that the mattress was not very comfortable and the bed frame squeaked excessively. Whenever one of us would move or roll over while we were sleeping, it would wake the other person up

The place was very nice, but we could hear way more through the adjacent walls than in any other place we’ve stayed. Also the bed was so high that we needed a step stool and the bed was much too soft.

The room I had was very loud as it was facing an area across from the train station(307) I did not fall asleep till 4 am due to the sound of the trains roaring by and the accompanying train whistle. This is a beautiful historic hotel. The staff is wonderful, the rooms immaculate. But it gets an average rating due to the noise factor. For the price I paid, I expected a good nites sleep. If you are planning on staying here, request a room away from t he side that faces the Red Wing Shoe Company . Also, the side that faces Highway 61 is also quite loud. Request the top floor if you get that side( at least you won’t hear trains all night)

Property and the room were awesome! They’ve done a good job keeping it updated but looking historic. The bar downstairs was very cool and the main restaurant was good. Only issue we had was the AC was leaking a bit so by the evening the floor next to the bed was wet.

The room did not look like the room available that i reserved. I selected a Riverside junior suite which was supposed to have a view of up the Mississippi River. The room I was put in did not have a very good view of the river and as me and my new wife were watching TV at the end of the bed aboard broke on the bed. And we were transferred to another room which was below the room we were in so there was barely any visibility of the river. Also the second room that we were put in the toilet was so close the sink that you could not stand in front of the sink because this toilet obstructed it you could literally poop and brush your teeth at the same time. The picture of the room I reserved had two sinks in the bathroom a very nice vanity a large tub and a shower separate with a toilet away from both the shower and the tub. The bathroom we got was as big as a small closet.

Room M122. The room was very nice, but it smelled a bit musty. We arrived late and didn't seem like the AC was working; looked at the heating/AC unit and wasn't able to adjust and no wall control either.

My family stayed in several rooms here for a mini family reunion and we all had a great experience. Everyone at the front desk was friendly and went out of their way to help us. My room had a lovely view of the river. We all enjoyed looking at the historical exhibits around the hotel. Red Wing is a cute town too.

This is a very old and well-known hotel in the heart of Red Wing Minnesota. The staff were amazing and even went so far as they leave a nice card in our room to help us celebrate the reason we were staying there. The room was clean and had wonderful historic decor. Vibrant, wallpapers, old, classic furniture, etc. This is not a negative, but please know that the room we stayed in did not have a refrigerator, or microwave. I wouldn’t expect that in a historical setting like this, but I wanted to point this out in case somebody plans on bringing their own food or beverages. Maybe some rooms have that option, I did not request it, and like I said, please don’t view that as a negative remark. You can find many wonderful options for dinner and shopping either on site, or very close by. When in the area, please make sure you take some time to visit the Mississippi river, which is close to the hotel, take a hike up the Bluffs, which are also close by, and enjoy the sounds of the trains that pass by occasionally.

Beautiful, historic landmark hotel for the area. The Port lounge downstairs, staff, and food were amazing. The establishment's unique history was intriguing. The friendly,approachable staff were terrific.

We booked - a year in advance - the best class of room: Junior Suite Riverside. The Expedia online photos showed a beautiful view of the river directly out of the window. However, the view from our room couldn't have been more different. Upon entering our room, we were greeted with a view of an industrial warehouse (graffiti included) right across the street. The only way to catch a glimpse the river was to lean way out into the bay window and look far to the right. The receptionist - who was unfriendly before we even checked in - told us that we had the correct room and that there was nothing that could be done. This room was not "Riverside" nor even "Riverview." It was "Warehouse-view." We've stayed in Red Wing in the past and will visit again in the future. But we'll never again stay at the overpriced, over-hyped St. James Hotel. I wish I could upload photos of our room. Absolutely appalling.

While the property lived up to the historic expectations, the billing was erroneous and likely dishonest. When booked thru Expedia it was shown as pay at the property. My card was charged immediately upon booking 2 weeks prior to our stay. Upon checkout we were charged $13.02 in excess of the quoted Expedia rate. They reviewed the rate and said Expedia had quoted the wrong rate, tough luck. I would like a refund and explanation for the charge date error.

My family stayed in several rooms here for a mini family reunion and we all had a great experience. Everyone at the front desk was friendly and went out of their way to help us. My room had a lovely view of the river. We all enjoyed looking at the historical exhibits around the hotel. Red Wing is a cute town too.

Had one “snotty” waitress the night we left just trying to enjoy the outdoor venue. Too bad since most of the stay was pretty good.

The manager at the property was amazing. We were upgraded to a junior suite for Christmas and a free bottle of Champagne Cleaning staff very helpful. Food was superior. It was a wonderful experience. Highly recommend staying here!

Very unfriendly staff at check in. We had 1 adult additinal for a total of 3 in the room so they charged extra fees. After charging fees they did not even put enough towels in the room.

The hotel is well maintained & very beautiful. The bed & pillows were very comfortable, and the linens very soft. Parking is free & in a garage attached to the hotel. The food in the Scarlet restaurant was delicious. After dinner we walked around downtown Red Wing & along the waterfront. Red Wing is a pretty town.

It starts with the soothing music and fresh cut flowers in the lobby, friendly check in, room with a view (get a river view if you can). Go for a walk around the historic downtown and find the downtown bakery in the morning. Outstanding.

We had a wonderful stay looking out at the Mississippi River. It’s in the middle of town with many shops and restaurants nearby. Beautiful lobby, reading room and living room. Madelyn and Jacob at the front desk made us feel at home. The Mediterranean Bowl at the restaurant was excellent.

The property itself is beautiful and rich with history. I stayed in the foundry which was huge and lovely. What the hotel can do nothing about is the loud car racing and spin outs with screeching tires up until after midnight right outside the room along the river edge. It’s too bad there isn’t more city control of this nonsense on a Saturday night. The hotel is amazing and the noise has absolutely nothing to do with the kind efficient service of really every employee I encountered. 5 stars.

The room I had was very loud as it was facing an area across from the train station(307) I did not fall asleep till 4 am due to the sound of the trains roaring by and the accompanying train whistle. This is a beautiful historic hotel. The staff is wonderful, the rooms immaculate. But it gets an average rating due to the noise factor. For the price I paid, I expected a good nites sleep. If you are planning on staying here, request a room away from t he side that faces the Red Wing Shoe Company . Also, the side that faces Highway 61 is also quite loud. Request the top floor if you get that side( at least you won’t hear trains all night)

Very cool historic hotel. Great restaurant, free parking ramp, very comfortable bed and pillows. Close to train tracks so we did hear trains overnight but we knew that beforehand.

This hotel is unique, cute and a must stay! It had such cute charm and history! One note to take into consideration is the train. The hotel is very close to the Station so you do hear the train throughout the night.

Hotel in pristine condition. Staff were amazing: bartender in The Port was great. She was super efficient and friendly. Great food in The Scarlet. Wish they would reopen Jimmy’s Pub to the public… best pub atmosphere in Minnesota We will be back in April

This is a historical hotel on the Mississippi River in Red Wing Minnesota. Staff was very friendly & helpful. Scarlet the restaurant in the hotel has great food, drinks & wonderful staff. We will return in the fall.

Clean hotel, very comfortable bed, friendly efficient staff. The restaurant is terrific. Beautiful and light and inviting. Food and drink were excellent. The speakeasy bar downstairs is atmospheric while also warm and cozy. It was a real pleasure to stay in this historic hotel. Highly recommend

Wasnt impressed with our over-all stay. Room was tiny, VERY noisy with the toilet & air-conditioner making load noises the entire time. Bed was also very noisy by just simply moving around. Door into the room was hard to open as it stuck every time. Tried both restaurants which we were excited to do. Scarlet place was excellent, outstanding food, and all around service from hostess to waitress was some of the best we ever experienced!! However, The Pub in the basement was a total fail for us both. A simple burger order took 25 minutes, service was good otherwise. Cocktail selection wasn't that great and neither was beer selection. Won't be back to stay but will go back to Scarlett restaurant if in the area.

Extremely limited menu options in Scarlet Letter Restaurant in Evening. Made option challenges tough. Waiter(India) had to work for 15-20 minutes to bring our Wine selection to table. Manager had to go to Cellar to fetch it. Higher price selections under lock and key? Room(Capitol) was roomy but “lumpy” floor. Must be sitting on “split” between new and classic phases of Hotel. It was pleasant to revisit after a 20 year hiatus. Pricing about what was expected. Sunday Morning dining options offsite were very limited. Religious reasons? Had to go to Lake City for Breakfast.

It's a historic hotel, conveniently located across the street from downtown Red Wing, making it easy to walk to stores, bars, and the park. It was clean, and the staff was nice. It has a cool, old bar in the basement. But our room was very small, and the view from our window was basically a brick wall. Given what we paid, it seemed like a lot for the size of the room and the view. Would I stay there again? Maybe, but I would probably check out other hotels in the area before booking.

My wife and I celebrated a special occasion with a weekend getaway to Red Wing and a stay at the St. James Hotel. The experience was wonderful from start to finish. The staff helped make our weekend even more memorable when they accommodated my request to have roses and champagne waiting in our room as a surprise for my wife. She was absolutely delighted. The room was comfortable and well-appointed, and the amenities were excellent. The exceptional service and attention to detail made our stay truly special. We look forward to returning in the future.
