There was no one at the desk when I entered - had to wait about a minute for someone to appear from somewhere. Not sure if there is a camera that they can see someone at the desk. No one at the desk when I checked out either and I wanted a receipt so I did wait for someone to appear. Would have liked to see snacks that could be purchased. We were told that there was a problem and there would be no breakfast the next morning. I had to ask for some compensation for the missing meals. Room was clean but the building seems somewhat tired.

There is no refrigerator's in the rooms, there is no vending machines anywhere in the building, the air conditioner did not work in our room had it set at 46 and still hot in there. needs to be remodeled desperately.

This used to be one of the best hotels in Springfield. It has really gone downhill. No real breakfast anymore. Bar is barely open. Everything is worn out including the staff who seem beaten down. They say that there's new management that is running the place on a shoestring. The only thing that it has going for it is the location and free parking.

Woke up Saturday moring and, there was noone at the front desk at all. Went to where I assumed breakfest was and, each container had what look like breakfest that been there for a few days. Cereal machines had cereal were all over the floor. It was dirty and, really discusting with noone to ask why. Walked outside to smoke and to another person staying there that saw the same thing. Upon checking in it took almost 45 min because 45 min because there was no heat in the rooms and, they were sending to people to rooms that were already occupied. The elevators were both out of order. Came back the rhat afternoon and, asked if there would be breakfest sunday morning the women at the desk on her phone said yes. Woke up next moring to no breakest, no coffee again wit no explanation why but, the mess cleaned up. Monday morning was the exact same. The people I did interact with that worked there were nice but, had no explanation for anything. A few dead bugs in my room and, the curtains would not close all the way. Without question the worst hotel experience I've had. The only thing worse was it being extremely cold outside. I was there Feb 15th, 16th & checked out the 17th. Will be pursuing a refund & will never stay there again.

No one was allowed to check in until 3:00 even though only 35 rooms were being used that night. There was no info available about the hotel or Springfield. The manager had the city maps and manager wasn't there. There are 2 bars and 1 restaurant on the property, but none were open on Tuesday. Restaurant was open briefly on Wednesday night, but was closed by 7:30 when we returned. There is nothing nearby for food. Most restaurants are open only for lunch and the neighborhood didn't feel that safe for walking towards the other hotels at night. There was no hairdryer in our room. We asked for one and the woman on the desk said they'd have to try to find one because they kept getting stolen. The man who brought it to our room was grungy looking, without a uniform or nametag. No information in the room. Maid service was only on request but no one told us that or let us know we were to reuse our towels. We did get more towels by asking at the desk. There was a menu for the restaurant, but no hours listed. Staff seemed unaware of when it might be open. Second day breakfast was very skimpy. Waffle maker not even plugged in. Yogurt was expired. Ice machine didn't work. Only one plastic cup in room for water. AC runs full blast (enough to move the drapes) or else it's off. Clerk at checkout unable to split our bill, even though we were told we could do that. He asked about concerns, but then indicated he wasn't the manager, the manager wasn't there, and clerk knew about problems.

Very nice place to stay and near to much more expensive hotels. Walking distance to several conference areas and felt safe while there. Staff were great. Only negative experience was that the breakfast was very minimal.

No real gym. Subpar front desk help. You get what you pay for

The hotels day has come and gone. It’s a solid affordable pet friendly place to stay but it’s fraying around the edges. My room had obvious water damage and the toilet constantly ran and the air wouldn’t actually get cooler than 73 despite the thermostat saying it was. That said, it’s in a decent location relative to the capitol, parking is free, breakfast is included and the rooms are decent size.

The building is dated. But it has been refreshed and is perfectly fine, with a great location and a great staff. There was plenty of close parking and it was as close as we could get to family in town. The breakfast was limited but it was enough to get us going and, again, all the staff in that area were wonderful. We were baffled by the negative reviews. We spent three nights and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!

Tub did not drain. Air conditioner falty. Elevators bad smell and very dirty.

A maintenance person could spend months repairing things. Rooms are not made up daily, rooms need a thorough cleaning. Elevator carpet is disgusting. No amenities in bathrooms. I could go on and on.

I booked a room at The State Inn from August 13–15 and had a truly disappointing experience. I called the hotel in advance to let them know I would be arriving early on the morning of August 14, around 8:00 AM, and would not be staying the night of the 13th. I was assured by a helpful gentleman on the phone that my room would be held and ready for my early arrival, and he took down my information. To my frustration, when I arrived—exhausted and running on no sleep—the front desk attendant informed me there were no available rooms and that housekeeping wouldn’t arrive until 9:00 AM. I explained that I had already paid for the room and had made prior arrangements with the hotel. She initially insisted nothing was available, until I pressed further. Only then did she ask for my name and “suddenly” found a room. Her attitude was dismissive and unhelpful, and it felt like if I hadn't pushed back, I wouldn't have gotten the room I already paid for. Once I got to the room, the experience didn’t improve. The hallway carpets were visibly dirty and hadn’t been vacuumed. The room itself was somewhat clean, but the bathroom had a terrible odor, likely from being wiped down with a dirty rag. There were no toiletries—not even soap to wash my hands. On top of that, the air conditioning didn’t work properly. It was 93 degrees outside and the thermostat inside the room read 78, making it extremely uncomfortable. Will not recommend to others.

Hallways and elevator needed to be vacuumed. Paint was peeling from ceiling in the room. Overall the cleanliness was terrible. Felt very uncomfortable the whole night. Thankfully only there for one night. Will not be staying there again. I'll drive an hour away to pay for a more expensive hotel than stay there again.

Comforter on bed was dirty, carpets dirty.

Very clean. They are care and wonderful people who work there. Would most definitely stay there again. Thank you soooo much.

It’s a shame because this hotel is directly across from the Capitol building so it’s a great location but the hotel and rooms are very dirty. My room looked like it hadn’t been vacuumed for a while. Debris and hair (or furballs), dirty bedcover and the room phone was so dirty I would not have touched it if I had to. Also, my colleague and I shared a room and she tried to enter the building at midnight and the doors were locked. She tried calling the front desk but got no answer so I walked down to let her in. The phone continued to ring and once she was in the building we waited to see if anyone would come for the front desk but no one ever did. Had I not been there to let her in, she would have remained locked out. It’s is not a keyed entry and no one was around. I mentioned it as check out and the person working the desk that morning apologized for the dirty room and was shocked to hear no one was at the desk the night before and that the door was locked. She said they’re going through some changes. Hopefully things get better for this hotel. I don’t ever plan to stay there again.

room wasn't ready. Whole Lobby filled with people, staff were literally hiding. My room had peeling paint all over the ceiling. Hallways were dirty. Just a mess of a stay!

Checked into a queen suite. There was a cashew visible under the edge of the couch as i walked in; A used washcloth hanging on the top shower curtain rail; A big hairball tumbleweed on the bathroom floor; Another hair when i pulled back the sheets on the bed. The previous coffee pod was still in the room coffee maker. Ice machine was broken, no sign to indicate as much. No coffee in the lobby, just an empty pot.

I only put this because the room had no heat. It was a cold night in October. For the most part the hotel was fine. But I couldn’t give it a higher rating bc of lack of heat.

The check in staff was friendly. Room and lobby were inviting and clean. The only things i didnt like were each bed only had 2 pillows, which i did text to receive more.. and did not get, also there is no mini fridge/microwave. Other than that it was a nice quiet stay.

Staff was friendly, there was hair on the toilet in my room so im not sure it was cleaned, walls were pretty thin as I could here people next door like they were in my room, besides the hair and walls the room was simple and ok for 1 night. I felt pretty safe everywhere.

We were hopeful about this property and thought it was nice - until we realize the AC in the rooms were not working. Based on past reviews it looks like the AC hadn’t been working for at least two weeks prior to us trying to stay. We ended up leaving and going to a different hotel because the rooms were 84 degrees.

The property is very conveniently located in downtown Springfield. The state capitol and within a few minutes driving distance from the Lincoln historic suites. The hallway carpeting wasn’t vacuumed, and there is a busy train station nearby that may bother some people.

No air conditioning and room temperature was over 85*. Paint was peeling off ceiling in room and bathroom ceiling was stained. Never again!

Our check in process was great! Our room was blowing hot air, so we called the front desk to have maintenance fix the issue. He came quickly, could not fix the issue and got us moved to another room—again with the same issue.

I think this is a nice hotel (especially for the price). The staff was friendly and it was well taken care of. My only complaint was that there is no refrigerator in the room.

No air conditioning 3 rooms we tried

Friendly staff. Great location and price. Very happy with my stay and highly recommend this hotel for anyone needing to stay in downtown Springfield.

We arrived at the hotel two hours after the 3:00pm check in time. There was a line in the lobby. We figured because of the state fair, that it was just busy. Nope, rooms had not been cleaned yet. They coyld not che k anyone in since they had no available clean rooms. The desk clerk took off and never came back! Finally, the manager showed up and offered to open the bar on the gouse while we waited for what we were told could be hours! How did they not know they were heavily booked and would need those rooms ready? Poor management at best. The bar offer was too little for people who had to wait all evening, been traveling all day, or had ruined plans due to this situation. I feel like we all deserve a half price stay. Otherwise, the room was nice once we got in at 9:00 pm.

We arrived for check in at 3pm to a.long line of people trying to do the same. There was 1 manager doing check in and every person there was told the same thing...no rooms are ready for.check in as they are short staffed. We proceeded to wait for 3 1/2 hours so we could get a room, which ended up not being the suite we wanted and reserved. We flew in to go to a concert with family so didnt have anywhere to go in the meantime. After getting a much smaller room we dropped our stuff off and were thoroughly disappointed in the room as it was still filthy, but we didnt want to be late for our event so we just dealt with it. I will not return to this disaster of a motel and was irritated by the cost of this gross room. Shame on you for over booking if you dont have the staff!!

I booked this hotel through the State House Inn website on 3/16/25 for a three night stay 5/7/25-5/10/25. I received a confirmation email with the correct dates that day that I made the reservation. I got a second confirmation email on 5/5/25, with trip details still accurate, saying I could save on a rental car. On 5/6/25 I got another email from State House Inn saying that some amenities may be unavailable due to updates being made to the property. When I arrived with my printed confirmation to check in, I was told that they had no record of my booking and the hotel was full. I showed her my three emails and my printed confirmation and she just said "sorry, I don't know what to tell you" and turned me away. I had to find another hotel, last minute, way outside of town due to the state senate being in session. This was completely unacceptable and absolutely ruined my trip to Springfield.

The staff was very nice and the front desk young man Peter is awesome and the housekeeping manager Pat was very helpful and fast

Had to go downstairs get my key reset every time I left my room because the keycard wouldn’t work. Extreme inconvenience. Front desk staff was very pleasant.

Not able to truly rate hotel, as far as room, services, etc... Had made reservation several months prior and had confirmed the day prior to arrival, only to get there and have no room. Several other parties in lobby were experiencing the same issue. Had to find last minute accommodations on the way to our event. Staff seemed very overwhelmed at the situation -whatever that might have been.

I had locked myself out of my room on accident, and waited in the lobby during prime check-out hours (Approximately 7:20-7:45AM) to get another key because there were literally no staff working. The manager eventually came and issued a new key without verifying my identity first. Not an ideal place to stay for a woman traveling alone.

Arrived 1 hour before check in. Stood in line for 45 minutes. When I finally got to the employee at 3:15 after check in time. He tells me no rooms are available for another hour and a half. That is completely unacceptable.

I did not get to stay here. They triple booked rooms. Multiple people were being turned away when I was attempting to check in. I had to drive over 30 minutes to get a new room, after driving almost 4 hours to get there. I was also still charged for the room.

Easy walking and driving to sites around town

Great staff and location

The building was nice and the staff was very friendly. The walk from the conference location at night takes you through some rough areas with panhandlers and homeless people.

A wonderful hotel right in the middle of downtown. Walking distance to Amtrak station.

Very close to the Illinois Capitol Building and walkable to the Lincoln Museum and the Lincoln home which were very enjoyable to visit. Very quiet during our visit.

The hotel is excellent for those traveling to visit the state Capitol as it is not a block away. The front staff was so friendly and attentive. She answered every question I have and provided excellent service. Although it was an in and out trip. I enjoyed our short stay.

Expired milk!!!!! No breakfast served !!!!

Poor selection for continental breakfast; no fruit, milk (offered dry cereal, but no milk), yogurt) - staff barely refilled select items they did offer; most staff seems to not want to work.

Sad to see this once great hotel going downhill from lack of care. Breakfast was a few biscuits and thin gravy. No eggs, bacon, sausage, juice or anything else they used to have. Coffee tasted like it had been cooked for a week.

The people at the reception were very welcoming. The hotel has a lot of potential. The location is very good with walking distance to all historic downtown places. The first room had the air conditioner not working, this was a problem due to the extremely hot weather . The front desk was very accommodating in getting me another room. That night the air conditioner did work however the following night I woke up in the middle of the night to a sauna room. It seemed the building had air conditioning issues because the hallways were just as hot. I was there on a business trip and both rooms I was in had no hair dryer, mini fridge or ironing boards. The continental breakfast offered what was left of a few apples, cereal and waffles. The coffee was very diluted almost water like. I truly hope they solve their AC issues and pay attention to providing the essentials in the rooms.

Had to ask for toilet paper and hand soap as there was none in the room when we arrived. For breakfast 1 hour before it was over no one to be found to ask, but no reg milk only chocolate, waffle batter all empty. No bread, bagels or muffins. When i did find someone it was an inconvience to help us. Would not recommend this place.

Good price for the stay during a downtown event. King beds were comfortable. Had an issue with our room and "Peter " was very kind and helpful. Breakfast was okay, can't complain about a free meal. Breakfast staff was very friendly. Hotel is older and despite updates it still feels older. Would stay again.

Glad that they shared in email that breakfast might not be available so we could prepare for that fact. There was no breakfast. They seemed short-staffed (unavailable at the front desk throughout the morning) but were friendly.

Walls are very thin some were not working breakfast went completely down hill! weirdos lurking the parking lot

One of the draws i had for this property was that they offered breakfast onsite. I stayed 2 nights and neither morning was breakfast offered. When asked they said they didnt offer it that day so I asked if it would be offered tomorrow and they said they didnt know. Room description said it was soundproof, but you could still the amtrak horn late at night and early morning. It was a place to sleep but thats about all.

Not sure if I left to early Thursday but there was no breakfast one of the main reasons I select this hotel.
