It is a picturesque village with a small harbour draped with fishing nets. However, it has a tempestuous and fascinating past, involving great storms, tales of smugglers and pirates, of the Armada and of Captain Cook, of great fishing fleets and the enormous ironstone industry. The cottage in which Captain Cook lived when he was apprenticed in the town still stands and there is a heritage centre dedicated to his story.
