the hotel was spotlessly clean and welcoming when we arrived. Although at the top of a steep hill and hotel has no lift bear that in mind for those who have any walking difficulties. Food was good but a tad too expensive ie £9 for a plate of soup! bed was very comfortable and warm, good sound proofing with adequate clothes space for a few days.

The hotel was very close to Windermere lake and very central to see the whole of the Lake District, which was my plan. The staff, especially the breakfast staff, were so friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel doesnt have a lift which was a shame and my room was up 2 flights of stairs which was difficult for me as i have bad knees. Parking was good though the spaces in additional parking are a bit tricky to manoeuvre, but possible. The breakfast was superb, i liked that it is brought to your table so there's limited waste too. You only order what you want. My room was very clean.

Hotel was nice although the pool was cold and the steam room wasn't working. My room was ground floor and as a solo female traveller, I would've preferred a room on 1st floor or above but it was clean and an ok size for one person. Food was great, very good selection for breakfast and all cooked fresh. Good, walkable distance from town with good public transport links to other areas.

Attentive service, very comfortable room. Excellent evening meal with beautiful views and a good breakfast included in the price. Only two rooms able to book pool and sauna at the same time so we almost had it to ourselves which was great

The hotel is in an excellent position with views over lake Windermere, a very warm and cosy feel to it, they light the log burner in the lounges late afternoon/early evening, which is nice to sit by and have a drink. It's about a 20 minute walk into Windermere town and 10-15 minutes walk into Bowness, both towns are very nice. The staff were excellent from arriving at the reception where we were welcomed and a bonus that our room was ready (2.30pm) to enable us check in early. The rest of the staff were also efficient, very welcoming and friendly, I have to make a special mention to the two sisters (Louise & Claire) who were wonderful in the restaurant, they were so attentive and polite, an asset to the hotel team. The food was fantastic, we had an evening meal which was delicious and breakfast on both mornings which was wonderful too and very filling, especially the full Cumbrian breakfast. The room (19) was very pleasant and immaculate, the only negative I would mention was that we could here the fire door in the corridor banging in the morning from around 7am. The pool was very small but this was fine for a little swim to stretch off after being out all day and the sauna was great to relax in. There is parking right outside the hotel and we didn't really use the car after arriving as everything local was walkable. We will definitely return to this lovely hotel.

Excellent location. The decor was lovely throughout the hotel. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Views were great from lounges and dining rooms. Pool although small was a pleasant bonus.

We stayed at hotel for 2nights. We were put in a pet friendly room which I specifically emailed about before arrival. As soon as you opened the door you could smell a dog smell in the room (not nice). Spoke with reception advised no rooms of same costing and could move next day. As this was a “late booking” that’s only room they could give us. I checked online for that particular night and both hotels own site and other partner sites showed availability for that day in same room. Moved rooms following day to costing of £10 as chose better room. Beds very comfortable. Room clean and tidy. Does get warm at night even with radiators off. 1 issue no toilet brush in bathroom. Pool was ok, sauna fine not much seating but had it to ourselves. Breakfast - hash brown well over cooked, Cumberland sausage wasn’t like one we’ve had before and was tasteless. The fried egg was VERY fried on one side. Black pudding not great. Would’ve preferred maple syrup in separate jug so you could put own amount on rather than it put on for you, bacon wasn’t great either. Had to ask how breakfast worked as this wasn’t explained. Staff at breakfast time very pleasant and attentive although took wee while to be seated and noticed a lot of tables not cleared when people had left. Aesthetically the hotel is very nice as lounges decorated well. There is a steepish hill to the hotel however good for transport as bus stop at very bottom of main road and you can walk to either village.

The hotel was beautiful and all the wonderful festive decorations made it feel very special. Bar staff were wonderful. I loved sipping my gin by the warm crackling fire place. The breakfast room was wonderful with lovely views of the snowy mountain tops. Great selection available for breakfast. My Eggs Royal were lovely, thank you for our amazing stay! Very comfortable stay. We booked a premier room and we were pleased with the room, furnishing and facilities. Our far reaching view of mountains, hills and Windermere Lake were lovely but we did feel rather on show to anyone sitting in the conservatory and the hotel car park. Nets/voiles/blinds would given us the option to dress and undress more privately. The restaurant was good. Great evening meal, pricy for what it was but convenient and good quality. Excellent breakfast and the service from our female waitress both in the evening and again at breakfast was friendly, efficient and pleasant.

It’s the 1st time we have used the hotel. I would highly recommend to anyone. The staff were friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. The room was lovely and comfy and very clean. I don’t have a bad word to say about the hotel. We will definitely come back the weekend.

We were thrilled with our choice of Hillthwaite. It has a central location near to both Windermere and Bowness yet high enough on a hill to have views of Lake Windermere from rooms and public spaces. The hotel is beautifully organized with several public lounges: sun room, library, bar/lounge and restaurant–all of which feature Lake views, as well as outdoor terraces. We had a view of the Lake from our large "occasion" room. The room was lovely with chairs and a table to take in the view. The bathroom had a tub and a separate shower–great pressure and temperatures and good lighting. We ate two dinners and breakfasts plus coffees and beverages at the hotel. The staff was attentive and professional. The meal times were organized to not overwhelm the kitchen: the food was timely and delicious. After a series of BnBs, we were looking for a resort/spa hotel and the Hillthwaite surpassed our expectations. Highly recommend the hotel and also a visit to Blackwell, a 1908 Arts and Crafts house outside of Bowness.

Great stay, staff were really friendly and offered lots of help with local area. Rooms were very spacious with unbelievable views of the lake and surrounding area. Dinner and breakfast was also great, cannot fault the hotel.

I stayed at the Hillthwaite at the end of my tour of Scotland. The luxury feel was throughout the hotel. The room was small but very comfortable and perfect for my needs. The staff - particularly the dinner and breakfast waiting staff - were amazing. The whole place was very well run. The view from the dinning room was breathtaking too.
I stayed at the Hillthwaite at the end of my tour of Scotland. The luxury feel was throughout the hotel. The room was small but very comfortable and perfect for my needs. The staff - particularly the dinner and breakfast waiting staff - were amazing. The whole place was very well run. The view from the dinning room was breathtaking too.

The hotel was very close to Windermere lake and very central to see the whole of the Lake District, which was my plan. The staff, especially the breakfast staff, were so friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel doesnt have a lift which was a shame and my room was up 2 flights of stairs which was difficult for me as i have bad knees. Parking was good though the spaces in additional parking are a bit tricky to manoeuvre, but possible. The breakfast was superb, i liked that it is brought to your table so there's limited waste too. You only order what you want. My room was very clean.

An excellent 2 day stay, could not find any faults, as an ex hotelier I know what great looks and feels like, excellent and professional check in, fantastic room with great views over Bowness, small pool and sauna used both days after long walks, excellent breakfast and wonderful staff where nothing was too much trouble, we have been to the lakes many times and finally we have found our now go to hotel for all future stays. Many thanks to all the staff at hillwhaite for making our stay with you so special.

The hotel is in an excellent position with views over lake Windermere, a very warm and cosy feel to it, they light the log burner in the lounges late afternoon/early evening, which is nice to sit by and have a drink. It's about a 20 minute walk into Windermere town and 10-15 minutes walk into Bowness, both towns are very nice. The staff were excellent from arriving at the reception where we were welcomed and a bonus that our room was ready (2.30pm) to enable us check in early. The rest of the staff were also efficient, very welcoming and friendly, I have to make a special mention to the two sisters (Louise & Claire) who were wonderful in the restaurant, they were so attentive and polite, an asset to the hotel team. The food was fantastic, we had an evening meal which was delicious and breakfast on both mornings which was wonderful too and very filling, especially the full Cumbrian breakfast. The room (19) was very pleasant and immaculate, the only negative I would mention was that we could here the fire door in the corridor banging in the morning from around 7am. The pool was very small but this was fine for a little swim to stretch off after being out all day and the sauna was great to relax in. There is parking right outside the hotel and we didn't really use the car after arriving as everything local was walkable. We will definitely return to this lovely hotel.

I shouldn’t say to much because the Hillthwaite might put up their prices! Excellent, comes to mind, ten out of ten in all departments, but the big standout was high quality of the staff, I highly recommend this hotel.

The hotel was beautiful and all the wonderful festive decorations made it feel very special. Bar staff were wonderful. I loved sipping my gin by the warm crackling fire place. The breakfast room was wonderful with lovely views of the snowy mountain tops. Great selection available for breakfast. My Eggs Royal were lovely, thank you for our amazing stay! We were well looked after. Mrs & Mr I. A. Gallaghers x

Nice hotel but but service is inflexible, often slow and too many rules. Food is average with some portions small. Staff often disorganised and chaotic processes leading to slow and poor service. Could not check even at check in time. Constant staff moaning of being busy or short staffed. Bed very comfortable but issues with shower pressure and drainage. Overall prob not worth the price.

Hotel was nice although the pool was cold and the steam room wasn't working. My room was ground floor and as a solo female traveller, I would've preferred a room on 1st floor or above but it was clean and an ok size for one person. Food was great, very good selection for breakfast and all cooked fresh. Good, walkable distance from town with good public transport links to other areas.

We were thrilled with our choice of Hillthwaite. It has a central location near to both Windermere and Bowness yet high enough on a hill to have views of Lake Windermere from rooms and public spaces. The hotel is beautifully organized with several public lounges: sun room, library, bar/lounge and restaurant–all of which feature Lake views, as well as outdoor terraces. We had a view of the Lake from our large "occasion" room. The room was lovely with chairs and a table to take in the view. The bathroom had a tub and a separate shower–great pressure and temperatures and good lighting. We ate two dinners and breakfasts plus coffees and beverages at the hotel. The staff was attentive and professional. The meal times were organized to not overwhelm the kitchen: the food was timely and delicious. After a series of BnBs, we were looking for a resort/spa hotel and the Hillthwaite surpassed our expectations. Highly recommend the hotel and also a visit to Blackwell, a 1908 Arts and Crafts house outside of Bowness.

Warm welcome, impressive but small bar and dining room. Fabulous west facing terrace for sundowners. Compact, but clean and nicely furnished room, modern shower room. Cracking location, 5 mins walk to both Windermere and Bowness.

Very comfortable stay. We booked a premier room and we were pleased with the room, furnishing and facilities. Our far reaching view of mountains, hills and Windermere Lake were lovely but we did feel rather on show to anyone sitting in the conservatory and the hotel car park. Nets/voiles/blinds would given us the option to dress and undress more privately. The restaurant was good. Great evening meal, pricy for what it was but convenient and good quality. Excellent breakfast and the service from our female waitress both in the evening and again at breakfast was friendly, efficient and pleasant.

Fantastic from start to finish. Warm welcome from the front desk who like us has traveled an love South Africa. Evening meals I would highly recommend eating in. The lamb an steak we had were cook to perfection along with a first class waiting service. Easy to see why the reviews are fantastic! Thank you for a wonderful stay. Mr & Mrs Harkness

We stayed at hotel for 2nights. We were put in a pet friendly room which I specifically emailed about before arrival. As soon as you opened the door you could smell a dog smell in the room (not nice). Spoke with reception advised no rooms of same costing and could move next day. As this was a “late booking” that’s only room they could give us. I checked online for that particular night and both hotels own site and other partner sites showed availability for that day in same room. Moved rooms following day to costing of £10 as chose better room. Beds very comfortable. Room clean and tidy. Does get warm at night even with radiators off. 1 issue no toilet brush in bathroom. Pool was ok, sauna fine not much seating but had it to ourselves. Breakfast - hash brown well over cooked, Cumberland sausage wasn’t like one we’ve had before and was tasteless. The fried egg was VERY fried on one side. Black pudding not great. Would’ve preferred maple syrup in separate jug so you could put own amount on rather than it put on for you, bacon wasn’t great either. Had to ask how breakfast worked as this wasn’t explained. This is an excellent hotel. The staff are so welcoming friendly and polite. It is extremely clean and well maintained. Rooms are spacious and beds are comfortable. Food is excellent. We will definitely be back.

Whilst we enjoyed our time in the lakes and hotel, our room (wordsworth) lack in air conditioning but apart from that, it was very comfortable with excellent views. The cooked breakfast were decent enough, we had a burger one night and I'm afraid to say we've had a lot better. Apart from those little gripes, would I recommend quite possibly yes!.
Whilst we enjoyed our time in the lakes and hotel, our room (wordsworth) lack in air conditioning but apart from that, it was very comfortable with excellent views. The cooked breakfast were decent enough, we had a burger one night and I'm afraid to say we've had a lot better. Apart from those little gripes, would I recommend quite possibly yes!.

Rm 16 was amazing. Breakfast staff were run off their feet and flustered due to only 3 staff of duty. The South African lady at the reception desk was was so friendly& helpful, she'd make a good manager!
