Mews Cottage is an exquisite holiday cottage set in the tranquillity and seclusion of the magnificent Bonython Estate. The cottage sleeps six and is beautifully furnished, earning a 5-star rating from the Cornish Tourist Board. Set within its own private courtyard, it has been enlarged and updated by incorporating a part formerly used as a private Chapel. Situated six miles south of Helston, Mews Cottage is close to the magnificent beaches and coves of The Lizard Peninsula. Eight minutes' drive brings you down to Poldhu Cove and the wonderful coastal paths. The layout of the property has been designed with great thought and style. The cottage comprises three large bedrooms, two upstairs and one on the ground floor, each with its own bath or shower room. The dining hall and charming sitting room both have wood burning stoves and the separate kitchen has a breakfasting table. All rooms face south across its two private courtyards, one gravelled with outdoor table and chairs and the other with lawn and sun loungers. Parking at the rear is accessed from the Estate's private road, adding to the peace of the setting. Rated as one of the 'Great Gardens of Cornwall', the gardens comprise 20 acres and offer excitement and surprises, with colour and interest in all seasons. Remodelled in recent years to include a contemporary water feature behind the delightful Georgian house, stroll through an eighteenth century Walled Garden, a traditional Potager Garden and an orchard of Cornish variety apple trees, on through parkland to a series of three small lakes, each with different atmosphere and planting with a stream cascade in a sheltered valley. Bonython is a traditional, mixed agricultural Cornish estate with the 18th century Manor, farm and woodland stretching almost from one side of the peninsula (the Helford River) to the other (the beach at Poldhu Cove) with each shore just over a mile away. For those who want to explore further, the magic of The Lizard Peninsula is close by with world-renowned beaches such as Kynance Cove and Kennack Sands, coastal paths, historic coves and numerous fishing villages such as Mullion, Coverack and Cadgwith. Mullion (2 miles), the largest village on the Lizard, is famous for Cornish crab and lobsters. Its many amenities include shops, convenience stores, inns, cafes and restaurants, craft shops and art galleries. It's a fantastic place for a family holiday and here's our list of 15 great things to do in the area: 1/ Visit Lizard lighthouse, located at Lizard Point - the only lighthouse you can climb in Cornwall. Explore the Heritage Centre which is located in the old engine room. This details the role of Trinity House (who run the lighthouse service) as well as providing hands-on exhibits for children and stories about some of the wrecks offshore. Enjoy a guided tour of the lighthouse. 2/ Geocaching - There are quite a few geocaches and trails in the Lizard area. 3/ Wild flowers - a wonderful place to spot coastal flowers. If you visit in spring or summer you'll find the hedgerows, verges and coastal path ablaze with flowers. 4/ Walk the coastal path - All of the tourist shops have booklets with suggested routes, alternatively pick up an OS map (No 103) and plan your own. Our favourites include the walk from Lizard to Kynance Cove and from Mullion village to Mullion and Poldhu coves. There are plenty of inland footpaths too. 5/ Goonhilly Downs (3 miles) - The satellite dishes of Goonhilly Earth Station can be spotted from afar. It's used as a centre for controlling satellites and although the visitor centre is currently closed their website indicates it will re-open after refurbishment. In the meantime why not enjoy a walk across the heathland and combine space age technology with Bronze Age archaeology. 6/ Mullion Cove (3.5 miles) - One of our favourite coves. The area surrounding the harbour is beautiful and worth a visit. Walk down to the cove from Mullion village and made a short detour to the small Chocolate Factory en route. 7/ Marconi Centre (2.5 miles) - This unassuming building on a hill next to Poldhu Cove marks the transmission of the first transatlantic radio signal. Manned by volunteer radio enthusiasts, visitors can watch a short video which tells the story of this historic event and its preceding history. 8/ Visit a garden - Apart from the magnificent gardens at Bonython, there are plenty of other gardens in the area which are open to the public. Bosahan Garden, Trebah Garden, Godolphin House and Estate and Glendurgan Garden (National Trust) are all within 11 miles. 9/ Go rock pooling at Kennack Sands (6 miles). If you fancy taking to the waves check out the surf school which operates from the Beach Hut. 10/ Explore Loe Bar beach (7 miles) - The shingle beach at Loe Bar separates Cornwall's largest lake (Loe Pool) and the sea. The surrounding area is owned by the NT and if you're feeling energetic you can take the 6 mile walk around the lake. 11/ Coverack harbour and beach (7 miles) - The village has a picturesque harbour area complete with brightly coloured fishing boats. 12/ Eat an ice cream at Roskilly's (7 miles) - Roskilly's is an organic farm which makes and sells its own ice cream. You'll see it in a lot of cafés around the peninsula and you can also visit the ice cream parlour at the farm. It's a popular outing with young families who can enjoy the farmland walks, pat animals and watch cows being milked. 13/ Visit Lizard Point - Take your binoculars as there are usually seals bobbing around in the waters off the Point. Whilst you're there pop into the NT wildlife watchpoint to find out more about the choughs which inhabit the Lizard cliffs. When you're finished head over to the cafe for a cream tea; the sun-trap garden has beautiful views. 14/ Visit some Poldark filming locations - All the Poldark filming locations are easy day trips from Bonython. The closest, just a mile away, is Church Cove, Gunwalloe, next to Dollar Cove. Then there's St Breward and Charlestown to the east, Porthcothan, St Agnes Head and Wheal Coates to the north, and Botallack, Levant and Porthgwarra to the west. 15/ Poldark Mine (8 miles) - Although it opened after the era of Poldark's character, the narrow corridors of this tin mine are the perfect location to shoot the underground mining sequences. The only complete mine currently open to the public, take an underground tour to discover more about the conditions the miners worked in during the 18th and early 19th centuries, the time in which the Poldark novels were set.
