Fair place to stay, but needs some improvements. Onsite parking, but not really striped or partitioned properly. Has a pub option. Stayed in room name "Victoria", which was rather tiny for a two person room with bed side pushed up against the wall. 3 nights in early-September 2025. Negatives: Check-in was fair enough, but high Pub traffic on Saturday night arrival seemed the priority. Whimsical Keys of the past, really don't do it for me for many safety reasons. I recommend leaving this type of key in the slot while in the room. Wi-Fi issues with connecting, staying connected, & weak signal. Silverware/ceramics were not the cleanest, nor was the kettle. In fact, I felt better after wiping down all of the touch points in the room. Bathroom was a little funky smelling. Electric hot water on demand shower experience went thru cycles of too hot, then freezing cold, all by itself. Brings new meaning to the term hot/cold therapy with 25 second cycles of each. Also, incredibly tiny shower stall to begin with low water pressure. Missing towel bar. No USB ports. Service done after the second night only, which consisted of more towels (the least of my worries) & plenty of Coffee. Positives: Sheets & newer towels were clean (the towels were not present in the room, had to ask for them). Incredibly thick toilet paper. Shower gel & hair shampoo were of higher quality as were the Coffee & Tea.

The staff were polite and friendly. We couldn't get one of the showers to work. The hotel has a good bar. It is conveniently located for conections to central Newcastle.

However, the hotel is extremely dated, the bathroom was not clean, the toilet roll holder had be broken off, the light pull was missing, and the bathroom door did not close.

Myself and a few friends stayed over the weekend and i can honestly say that we will definitely stay here when we return to the area. The hotel has old world charm and the staff were amazing and made us feel so welcome. They went out of their way giving us local knowledge that we would just not have known as we are not from that area. A Bar on premises ceratinly helps as well and the price here compaired to a few miles away made this such an easy decision.

Was a shock when enter the room as poor state of repair mattress and bedding was ok bed base was a disgusting but it served its purpose we stayed 2 nights really needs updating dinning room not in use bar area looked nice we not use it but seen in from the door

Down to newcastle for the rugby stayed at the royal hotel for one night. On arrival the people there could not have been more helpful and friendly, as we were away for the rugby and would not be back unitl late we were allowed to register early and collect the keys from the bar on our return. Bit of a climb to the rooms, my room was comfortable and plenty of room. Only down side was not a great deal of pressure from the shower other than that i will be using the hotel again. Bus stop right outside the hotel with a regular into town every 15 minutes or so at a cost of £2.

Whilst I wasn’t expecting much for the price (£50ish), there are basic expectations for pretty much any hotel, and the only one that was really met was the friendliness of the staff. The size of the room was great but it was very dated, the door locks are also a bit strange as you have to roll the key in the barrel three times and then hold it to get it to unlock. Perhaps mine was just faulty though. The bed sheets weren’t the cleanest, couple of stains from previous use, but did smell clean at least. Considering the hotel is out of the city, the noise levels weren’t great. You can very clearly hear conversations from the rooms next door (which is okay, but not at 3am). The downstairs bar seems like a social hotspot and the staff are great, but that noise definitely carries. Again, fine with that being at a reasonable hour, but that seemed to continue in to the early hours of the morning. Now, the big problem was the bathroom, particularly the shower was disgraceful. Firstly, the hot water would work for about 20 seconds (only scalding hot) and when you turned the temp down it’d get stuck on freezing cold. After that it just stayed cold even when the temp was turned back up. After 3 attempts across half an hour I just gave up and washed in the sink, which did at least have hot water consistently. Even if I did have a shower I didn’t like the fact that the wall was bowing inwards so the tiles had started falling off the wall, not safe or hygienic tbh.

Pictures very inaccurate. Room filthy. Shower extremely mouldy. Toilet didn’t work. Not acceptable even at that price.

This place lets down the OYO brand, big time. The approach is down a narrow unlit street, which had groups of lads loitering in the dark. The carpark isn't labelled as such, and looks like it belongs to a different building. The room I was given had no heating, the radiator having broken. I insisted on a change - it was -1 overnight - and was given a room with an electric radiator that hadn't been plugged in, and took an age to warm the room. The room carpet had burn marks from and iron and stains from I don't know what. The ensuite sink was badly broken and glued back together. The mattress had seen better days... many, many better days. Even the rubbish bin was broken. There was no desk - I'd intended working. There was no bedside lamp - had to get out of bed to turn the light off. The communal areas were unclean. The staff were non-existent, with one notable exception of the lady who moved me to a different room, and really did her best to accommodate against difficult circumstances, which included the fact that she was also working alone behind the bar in the pub area. Even simple things - like, having room numbers so there is some kind of logical progression as to where each guest might find their room - seems to have passed them by. Each room has a woman's name. Great... so, does Victoria come before or after Jennifer? Honestly, this was a mistake. OYO, either bring it up to your usual higher standards, or get out before it damages your whole reputation.

The hotel and room was clean. There was only one plug socket that worked and bathroom had holes in the walls and bath panel

I found what I could only assume was a bag that had had white powder in it in my bedside draw, so much for cleaning. Hole in bathroom door, bathroom window was broken. In all the state of the hotel and the location was awful.

Worst hotel experience in my lifetime! Avoid at any cost you will regret it immensely if you visit. Should have expected this when local taxi driver asked me if I was really staying at the OYO Royal and followed up with an exasperated why?! Checked in, wifi didn't work on top floor. Told something must be wrong with my phone, tablet, laptop. No heating in room, it was freezing had to sleep in my clothes, told it was working downstairs. Finally no hot water or water pressure. Told it will work in the next 10 minutes, no surprises it didn't. Went down to reception, at least the front reception lady was nice only thing worth one star. Called the hotel chain multiple times for a solution. Kept getting diverted to other operators that didn't speak English or placed on hold and then hung up on. As I arrived late I couldn't find any other hotels to move to as if there was the option I'd be out of here in a heartbeat. Everything screams scam. Save your money and your sanity.

Nice little Hotel in Gateshead area around 7 minute drive from Newcastle Center. Single room was large with sink and tea and coffee facilities. Comfortable bed and room was clean. The only major gripe I had was the shared shower which had virtually no water pressure.

I stayed here on the Saturday before the Great North Run, it was booked in June after my previous hotel cancelled my booking. So i was relieved to find this hotel, but horrified that it cost £213. This hotel at best is a £40 a night place. I'm surprised it passed fire safety regulations as the room was completely wooden panelled. The excessive noise from the hotel bar kept me awake. When that stopped drunk locals and traffic kept waking me up. The room rate excluded breakfast, but that was probably a good thing judging by the rest of the hotel. The receptionist was nice, but that doesn't benefit the experience of staying. The rooms habe women's names rather than numbers, which was amusing. However, I wouldn't choose to stay here ever again and only did because it was the only option available. Unless you are in this specific area for a reason it's not worth staying there and Newcastle/Gateshead is so small you could easily stay elsewhere unless there us a major event on.

Staff is welcoming and friendly. (They dont even mind repeating 😂 because that accent hits hard..). Those room pictures that are posted here are nothing that, our was. Cleaning could be a little bit detail oriented.. Above the coffee table, on the ceiling, were cobwebs. Bathroom, - the water pressure was bad, the hot water heats up very slowly. The walls were with plastic boards in which there were holes. It was scary to take the shower, because if you need to hold on walls, then you can demolish. No heater there, bathroom was ice cold. I had previous experience in UK with bathroom water pressure, so that wasnt suprise. Location is alright. (Stores, such as ALDi & Metrocentre are 20min walk). It's quiet at night. Beds comfortable. It would be nice if small upgrade be done to apartments and update the location information on google maps because we were circling around private sites almost for an hour..

The furnitures are too old. The bathroom is too small and the pressure of the shower is not good enough. The terrible aspect is that the building is too close to the road, and the noise coming from the passing vehicles is very uncomfortable. The worst of it all is that the room/the bed vibrates whenever bus or big vehicle pass the building, and I felt unsafe and uncomfortable through out my stay. I suggest that government needs to look at the spot of the road that causes the buses and big vehicles to vibrate the building while passing. Honestly, I felt very unsafe, very uncomfortable and very unhappy staying in this hotel.

The room they initially moved us to was different from the room i paid for and it was noisy and it had bad drainage at the bath tub,we couldnot sleep all night because of the noise but the hotel staff said he cant do anything till morning when manager arrives,i called in the morning and spoke to the manager he moved us to the room i initially saw when i was booking,the room the manager moved us to the next morning was more comfy and quiet, the staff were polite,a tiny bone like pin punctured my right leg near the bathroom so they need to check the carpets to make sure no bones or sharp objects.

My stay at this hotel was an absolute nightmare, the noise from music playing at full volume downstairs right up to the small hours of the morning was deafening. The hotel appeared un maintained, dirty and looks nothing like in the photos. Did not sleep a wink on Friday and Saturday night. #nosleepfridaysaturdaynight.

We stayed at this so called hotel for 1 night after a concert in Newcastle and it was truly dreadful. No hot water in the morning, no staff on duty to rectify this, loose fitting light fitting hanging by our bed, no mirror in the bathroom, no plug for the sink basin in the bathroom and no hairdryer for my wife. Having lodged a complaint over a week ago with the OYO head office, I also now have no faith in their business either. AVOID THIS HOTEL AND ANY OTHER HOTEL THAT IS PART OF THE OYO GROUP.

Ver welcoming hosts Vick was very helpful, tha atmosphere and hosts were the plus point, the hotel needs a revamp as it’s a little tired but overall it was quiet, great locals and the hosts were brilliant.

Really enjoyed our stay, such friendly staff, convenient having the pub underneath, gave us a local taxi number which is nice and also checked on our taxi to make sure it was the right one when we were leaving. Rooms clean, beds comfy, everything we needed for short stay. Brilliant shopping centre 1mile away and quick into city centre or Town Moor for events, highly recommend

Cozy hotel, but it is getting old. Bathroom should be remodel. And it takes time to get hot water. The staff is really nice.

Hotel is in a great location for getting into Newcastle. Bus stop right outside where busses run every 5 minutes to take you into the city centre. The hotel itself could do with a touch up in places but I think this is reflected in the price, as it is much cheaper than city centre hotels and other hotels in the local area. I think the hotel represents good value for money all things considered and I would stay there again.

Very comfortable bed and large room. Just by the bus stop into Newcastle town. Excellent value for money 💰

Easy to get to would of be nicer if they were doing food also
