This was an old building full of character but spotlessly clean. It doesn’t have a lift and the stairs are quite steep to the second floor but there are chalet-type rooms at the back for those who cannot manage stairs. The hosts were very friendly and the carvery was excellent. We would visit again if in the area. The town was very quiet and the surrounding area very picturesque. A good place to stay to go to The Royal Welsh Show - about a 40 minute drive away.

Nice old historic building with the quirks of charms to go with it. The beds were very comfortable and the room had fans to help with the heat of the summer. Classic style pub attached to the property and a decent sized pub garden to go with it. Staff were very helpful and friendly throughout. I think this was the stand out part of the stay. Had the carvery on one of the night there and have to say it was superb. Would definitely consider stay here if in the area, or going to the Royal Welsh Show again.
Nice old historic building with the quirks of charms to go with it. The beds were very comfortable and the room had fans to help with the heat of the summer. Classic style pub attached to the property and a decent sized pub garden to go with it. Staff were very helpful and friendly throughout. I think this was the stand out part of the stay. Had the carvery on one of the night there and have to say it was superb. Would definitely consider stay here if in the area, or going to the Royal Welsh Show again.

A group of 4 of us stayed 2 nights while exploring mid Wales by motorbike. Good having off road parking, a good continental style buffet breakfast. The rooms were excellent and the whole place has character as you'd expect from a building with so much history behind it. Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful. However, having been out on our bikes since 9am, we arrived back to the hotel at 5.20pm and checked if the bar was still open (it was publicised as being open until 6pm) to which we were told that it was now closed but it could be opened up and he would serve us as we were hotel guests but we only had 5 minutes. On saying we'd be back down after a shower, we were once again told 'you have 5 minutes'!!! So we went across the road to the Royal Oak pub where we were made to feel very welcome by the landlady and her staff, had an excellent meal there and gave them quite a bit of business between the four of us. Clearly not all members of staff at the hotel where we stayed have yet done the Customer Service module. Overall though a very enjoyable stay and we would return again (but go to the pub across the road to eat and drink in the evenings).

Very pleasant location and staff . Nice dining at reasonable prices. Good real ales. Our Bedroom 9 requires climbing and descending 39 steps so would not be suitable for some people. The en-suite bathroom was very good.

This historic property is charming and well appointed. We enjoyed our stay in king bed rooms. There are a lot of stairs but that is expected in a historic building. We enjoyed a delicious meal in the on site restaurant. The staff is helpful and friendly.

Great Hotel, you get an enormous sense of history from the moment you walk in. The service was great and the staff were attentive and cordial. My room was number 10 which was at the top. very big and specious with great views of the town and country side. Food & drink were fine with a great carvery on the Wednesday, which I really recommend

Having paid £130 for a room on a Sunday evening, we were very disappointed to receive an email stating the bar and restaurant closed at 6pm, therefore we would have to go off the premises to have dinner. The room was non refundable. The manager did offer to let us cancel but having booked through Expedia it was still non refundable. We also had family in the same situation in another room . The rooms are adequate and well equipped but the bed mattresses dreadfully uncomfortable and in both rooms squeaked and groaned with every movement…hence a terrible nights sleep. Most hosteleries that do not have facilities open reduce their price on those nights. With a disabled, 88 year old husband there is no way I would have booked, knowing we could not eat or drink on the premises . I think the charge of £130 was extortionate. The area from the chalets to the main building is a tip . It would only take a short time to clear the discarded furniture and general rubbish. For information… only continental breakfast of processed meats and one processed cheese are available. No rolls or bread, just toast.

Stayed while visiting family. Checked out early as we couldn’t bare to stay any longer. Unfortunately the hotel needs some modernising and updating in parts. Seems to be catering more for locals than visitors/tourists. The place smells of cigarette smoke and cooking fat as soon as you enter the door. Room was clean, but even though the heating was on in our room the air was still cold. Curtains were hanging off the curtain rings with many not attached and were thin pale fabric letting so much light in. Water mark stains on the ceiling. Was looking forward to a cooked breakfast in the morning only to be told they no longer did one and nothing else available locally. Only continental, but never mentioned. Car park is exposed and no CCTV. Wouldn’t recommend or return unless changes. Such a shame as an historic and beautiful building with potential.

We booked a 'superior' double room which turned out to be enormous, the only setback being that it was up 2 flights of stairs and the second of these had very narrow steps. However the room was lovely and so was the bathroom (which had a jacuzzi!) All was nice and clean. On one evening they had a carvery which was very popular and deservedly so. Breakfasts were 'continental' style, but plenty of choice. The bar is an old-fashioned gem.

Martin and his team delivered excellent customer service, unfortunately we got stuck in a flood but they went above and beyond to help us. The hotel is clean and comfortable, the bed especially so. The food was freshly cooked, plentiful and very good. We would definitely stay here again.

A wonderful stay. Relaxed and informal atmosphere. Lovely clean and spacious room. Had a great evening meal at the cosy bar. Breakfast from 7am was very useful before an early working day. Continental breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice. Staff were all very helpful and welcoming. Would return if inthe area in the future. Diolch yn fawr

Only One night stay but overall excellent experience lovely clean room , very helpful reception staff, and a nice continental breakfast, would have been nice to have the option of cooked breakfast but certainly would not stop me booking there again.

The rooms were immaculate and even had a a book in there explaining the history behind the building which was really interesting. The food was amazing and the portion sizes were great all for good pricing. The area is very quiet but there’s plenty of places to go that’s within walking distance or 5-10 minutes in the car but it truly is set out as the Victorian/Tudor era. The staff were so attentive and friendly. Overall amazing stay and would definitely come again!

Fantastic old hotel, our room had oak paneling and ensuite unusually with a jacuzzi! Staff very friendly and helpful. Good food in the restaurant. We didn't find out why they don't do Welsh breakfast but the continently breakfast was vert adequate.

Overall though a very enjoyable stay and we would return again (but go to the pub across the road to eat and drink in the evenings).

Martin and his team delivered excellent customer service, unfortunately we got stuck in a flood but they went above and beyond to help us. The hotel is clean and comfortable, the bed especially so. The food was freshly cooked, plentiful and very good. We would definitely stay here again.

The rooms were immaculate and even had a a book in there explaining the history behind the building which was really interesting. The food was amazing and the portion sizes were great all for good pricing. The area is very quiet but there’s plenty of places to go that’s within walking distance or 5-10 minutes in the car but it truly is set out as the Victorian/Tudor era. The staff were so attentive and friendly. Overall amazing stay and would definitely come again!

This was an old building full of character but spotlessly clean. It doesn’t have a lift and the stairs are quite steep to the second floor but there are chalet-type rooms at the back for those who cannot manage stairs. The hosts were very friendly and the carvery was excellent. We would visit again if in the area. The town was very quiet and the surrounding area very picturesque. A good place to stay to go to The Royal Welsh Show - about a 40 minute drive away.

Very pleasant location and staff . Nice dining at reasonable prices. Good real ales. Our Bedroom 9 requires climbing and descending 39 steps so would not be suitable for some people. The en-suite bathroom was very good.

Our welcome and care throughout our stay was exceptional. Both front of house and bar staff were keen to make us feel relaxed and to make the most of our experience. It is a fascinating building in a wonderful location.

Nice old historic building with the quirks of charms to go with it. The beds were very comfortable and the room had fans to help with the heat of the summer. Classic style pub attached to the property and a decent sized pub garden to go with it. Staff were very helpful and friendly throughout. I think this was the stand out part of the stay. Had the carvery on one of the night there and have to say it was superb. Would definitely consider stay here if in the area, or going to the Royal Welsh Show again.

Beautiful old building with spacious, comfortable room. There are no lifts to upper floors, but that is understandable given the age of the building. Continental breakfast was very good. Dinner menu was good and service friendly and efficient. I recommend the carvery, which was served on Wednesday evening. All in all, we found this hotel to be excellent value for money. We would definitely go again.

We were delighted by the old-fashioned charm of this hotel, which has surely survived despite all the odds in the current financial climate. We booked a 'superior' double room which turned out to be enormous, the only setback being that it was up 2 flights of stairs and the second of these had very narrow steps. However the room was lovely and so was the bathroom (which had a jacuzzi!) All was nice and clean. On one evening they had a carvery which was very popular and deservedly so. Breakfasts were 'continental' style, but plenty of choice. The bar is an old-fashioned gem.

A lovely hotel full of character and excellent food, particularly the dinner menu in the evening. Staff were friendly and attentive. Having paid £130 for a room on a Sunday evening, we were very disappointed to receive an email stating the bar and restaurant closed at 6pm, therefore we would have to go off the premises to have dinner. The room was non refundable. The manager did offer to let us cancel but having booked through Expedia it was still non refundable. We also had family in the same situation in another room . The rooms are adequate and well equipped but the bed mattresses dreadfully uncomfortable and in both rooms squeaked and groaned with every movement…hence a terrible nights sleep. Most hosteleries that do not have facilities open reduce their price on those nights. With a disabled, 88 year old husband there is no way I would have booked, knowing we could not eat or drink on the premises . I think the charge of £130 was extortionate. The area from the chalets to the main building is a tip . It would only take a short time to clear the discarded furniture and general rubbish. For information… only continental breakfast of processed meats and one processed cheese are available. No rolls or bread, just toast.

Our only complaint was that we didn't stay long enough to enjoy all that was available. The accommodation was great (we stayed in a lodge), the staff were helpful and friendly, the food was great (Sunday roast buffet highly recommended), room was clean and well maintained and the bar and gardens were wonderful. We will definitely stay there again if we're in the area

We had an amazing stay. The room was spacious and clean with ample facilities and a comfortable bed. The staff were friendly, with a warm welcome and very helpful. We had a tasty meal in the evening. Breakfast was ok, but would have liked some boiled eggs with my continental breakfast, but that's just my personal experience of a continental breakfast in Europe. We thoroughly enjoyed and we will definitely book to stay again 😊

Restaurant has excellent dishes at good prices and the bar serves a good range of drinks again at good prices. A Continental Breakfast is included and there is no cooked breakfast option. The only drawback is the lack of a lift and one or two floors are a bit unveven but to be expected at over 400 years old.
