Excellent service. Very personable chap in charge - Andy! Had a lovely chat with him and his wife. Blended in well with the locals and it was if I was one of the lads.

Always a nice pleasant place to stay. Basic rooms but very clean. Nice food too at breakfast and evening meal. People very friendly, both the staff and locals at the bar. I stay often.

Affordable, value-for-the-money accommodation with hearty (extra cost but affordable) breakfast. Room comfortable with snug ensuite facilities. Friendly staff. No restaurant except Fridays and Saturdays, but curry and Pizza/Chicken takeaways within walking distance; residents can bring meals back to eat in the bar. Small health and safety warning - the steps and handrail leading to the accommodation block need attention - nothing a couple of hours with some mortar and bolts couldn't fix. Unfortunate that they haven't been!

Very welcoming friendly landlord bar staff equally pleasant. Good beer & bar menu from sandwiches to more substantial meals with starters mains and deserts honest pub grub. Breakfast excellent value with cereals, juice, full English plenty of toast & jam tea & coffee, pot was refilled no problem. A very pleasant one night stay large double room, comfortable bed plenty of hot water in the shower. Would stay again close to Castle Hedingham & Steam Railway.

A really good nights sleep, nice room and very helpful staff. I ate in the pub - best jacket potato for a long time and nothing was too much trouble. They made a filling off menu and also dessert as I'm celiac :-) Greatly appreciated. Only downside building work in rooms downstairs - builders started hammering at 8am but stopped shortly afterwards. A great place to stay with a nice little beer garden out back and lots of parking. Would definitely stay again.

Unpleasant stay – poor room conditions I stayed at this property in May 2025 and unfortunately had to leave right after check-in. The room was very cold, as the radiator wasn’t working and the window had been left open. The air was very damp and musty, and there were visible signs of mold around the window area. I was traveling with my child and didn’t feel comfortable staying under those conditions. I contacted customer service the same day and submitted photos, but I was later told that no refund could be issued unless approved by the property. It was a disappointing experience, and I hope the room conditions will be improved for future guests.

Checked in had to check in at the bar young lad showed me where my rooms was, the ceiling light was so dim it wasn’t even worth having on, the bathroom sink had the person befores facial hair in the sink, the room was very dusty that I kept sneezing, bed and pillow where terrible the spare pillows on the shelf had no cases on them, the carpet was very sticky and had a foul smell, wouldn’t recommend and definitely wasn’t worth the £

The wonderful lady that greeted us was friendly and had a good sense of humour. She showed us to our room which was spotlessly clean. We had dinner which she also cooked and breakfast again cooked by this true asset to the pub. A pleasant stay for a wedding just a short walk away. Was it the Ritz? No, but we didn’t pay for the Ritz. Would recommend.

We were really disappointed in the cleanliness of the property. The room had not been hoovered, the toilet seat was broken and the sink had a large crack in it . The furnishings were very tired and the rooms could do with updating . The staff were very friendly.

Please stay away!! For the amount that I have paid is not worth it!! The room was very dirty, spiderwebs everywhere in the room, no soap or shampoo or shower gel in the bathroom. Very cold in the room they haven’t open the heath. The carpet was very dirty plenty of stains on it. In the pub I order a drink and the glass that I was served were disgustingly dirty. This hotel only worth £30 / night, not even that. So, so , so unpleasant PLEASE STAY AWAY

The hotel was cheap but our room had multiple problems and not very clean. The Tv failed to switch on with the remote. The en suite was designed for a disabled guest but the low placement of the mirror meant it was difficult to shave without crouching down. The sink was far too small and the tap moved so that it had to be steadied with one hand and turned off with the other. My wife had to wear a jumper to sleep because the room was so cold.

Absolutely awful. There is clearly no sound proofing so as a couple that usually go to bed at a reasonable time (10.30pm) we was kept awake by a couple of ladies below us screeching and cackling until gone past 2am, to then be woken up by them at 6am. They practically sounded as if they were in our room. Finally managed to drift back off to then being woken up by a man making a phone call to which we heard every detail. We had practically no sleep as it was freezing when we did manage to sleep so we ended up missing breakfast so we can't comment on that bar the small 1 hour time window we was told we could have breakfast which was a bit strange. The room was full of cobwebs and for the price we won't be returning. We travel down regularly to see family in Essex which is quite a distance from us and it made for a very tiring journey home today.

The rooms are old and a little tired. We found ours cold. Ok for a night if you are looking for an "over night stay". Joy, who appears to be everywhere and doiing everything is absolutely the best part. Breakfast was filling and a good standard. All cooked fresh and served with Joy. We would go back just because of her!

First problem was finding the place, web says it is in High St Halstead, but is in Great Yeldham 6 miles away Room was adequate for the price but extract fan in en suite was not working. Breakfast not a good experience. Cook was friendly, long hair in the butter, two jam jars on the table had dust all over the tops, kitchen paper for napkins, however we were not charged full price as we did not have full breakfasts

Very welcoming friendly landlord bar staff equally pleasant. Good beer & bar menu from sandwiches to more substantial meals with starters mains and deserts honest pub grub. Breakfast excellent value with cereals, juice, full English plenty of toast & jam tea & coffee, pot was refilled no problem. A very pleasant one night stay large double room, comfortable bed plenty of hot water in the shower. Would stay again close to Castle Hedingham & Steam Railway.

First problem was finding the place, web says it is in High St Halstead, but is in Great Yeldham 6 miles away Room was adequate for the price but extract fan in en suite was not working. Breakfast not a good experience. Cook was friendly, long hair in the butter, two jam jars on the table had dust all over the tops, kitchen paper for napkins, however we were not charged full price as we did not have full breakfasts

Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Room was clean and tidy and the bed was comfortable. Beware though - they don’t serve food mid week.

Affordable, value-for-the-money accommodation with hearty (extra cost but affordable) breakfast. Room comfortable with snug ensuite facilities. Friendly staff. No restaurant except Fridays and Saturdays, but curry and Pizza/Chicken takeaways within walking distance; residents can bring meals back to eat in the bar. Small health and safety warning - the steps and handrail leading to the accommodation block need attention - nothing a couple of hours with some mortar and bolts couldn't fix. Unfortunate that they haven't been!

Building was a little bit tired looking but we didn’t spend must time in the room too busy enjoying ourselves the staff and breakfast was so lovely brilliant atmosphere in the bar

A really good nights sleep, nice room and very helpful staff. I ate in the pub - best jacket potato for a long time and nothing was too much trouble. They made a filling off menu and also dessert as I'm celiac :-) Greatly appreciated. Only downside building work in rooms downstairs - builders started hammering at 8am but stopped shortly afterwards. A great place to stay with a nice little beer garden out back and lots of parking. Would definitely stay again.

Unpleasant stay – poor room conditions I stayed at this property in May 2025 and unfortunately had to leave right after check-in. The room was very cold, as the radiator wasn’t working and the window had been left open. The air was very damp and musty, and there were visible signs of mold around the window area. I was traveling with my child and didn’t feel comfortable staying under those conditions. I contacted customer service the same day and submitted photos, but I was later told that no refund could be issued unless approved by the property. It was a disappointing experience, and I hope the room conditions will be improved for future guests.
