It was a good stay. I wouldn't recommend this for some who's used to a "silver spoon" lifestyle as this is the equivalent of crashing on a friend's couch for a couple of days; not so much personal space, there's always someone in the bathroom, and there is very little regard for your sleeping schedule. Expect what you pay for, but if the low price was the appeal to begin with, then understand that it's not a compromise to your safety. I found the staff to be very dedicated to their job and that gave me some peace of mind. Moreover, just sitting in the lobby with a menagerie of people felt like the start menu of a Persona game. It's a vibe. Finally, there are small lockers around if you'd prefer some added security and there are female only rooms if that was a concern of yours. The immediate area feels a bit shady - especially at night - but I'm also from Indiana and was just getting used to being in a big city. But again, it was a good stay.

My stay at The European Hostel was wonderful! From the moment I arrived, the front desk staff—especially Nick—made me feel welcome and at ease. He is incredibly attentive, professional, and always ready to help with any questions or concerns. I truly appreciated the way he handled situations fairly when some guests didn’t follow house rules, always making sure the environment stayed clean, safe, and comfortable for everyone. The rest of the staff were also friendly and kept the common areas tidy, creating a warm and positive atmosphere. The beds were surprisingly comfortable, with fresh linens provided, and I had no trouble getting a good night’s sleep. The kitchen was equipped with everything needed for cooking your own meals, which is a great bonus for travelers who prefer homemade food. There are also plenty of nearby restaurants and cafés if you want to explore local flavors. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly place with a great location, comfortable beds, and a staff that genuinely cares about your experience, The European Hostel is a fantastic choice!

I had a pleasant stay at The European Hostel. The location is convenient—close to public transport and just a short walk from many popular attractions in San Francisco. The front desk staff, especially Nick, was incredibly helpful, welcoming, and attentive to guests' needs, creating a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The rooms were clean and the facilities were well-maintained. The common areas, including the kitchen and lounge, were great for relaxing or connecting with other travelers. Housekeeping staff did a good job keeping everything tidy and fresh. Overall, it's a great budget-friendly option for solo travelers or small groups looking for a centrally located hostel with a community vibe. I would definitely stay here again!

The European Hostile is okay. It's average. A Meh if maybe. It's quiet and I got some good sleep. However the bathrooms need a lot of work. If one shower doesn't have hot water then you have to go into another shower that has hot water, problems with the light staying on, and a overflowing waste basket. No this place isn't big and fancy but it's a hole in wall place where it's quiet as soon as you get inside and place to get some sleep. It's worth its salt.

I didn’t know much about San Francisco when I booked this place, and I wasn’t aware that it is in an area called “the Tenderloin”, which is known to be one of the rougher areas. That being said, I had very little worry and no issues while I was there. This place was pretty much what I expected when I booked it; just a place for me to sleep. I booked a twin room to myself as I was over the age of 30 and it was all I needed. But know that the room is literally a twin bunk bud and that’s it. I would recommend a desk or a nightstand or something in there in the future. Would be nice, but I’m not complaining. My sheets were clean and I was comfortable, and that is all that matters. Two recommendations I would make, other than a nightstand or something in the room, is a better cleaning in the shared bathrooms. I can tell they were serviced morning and night, but it would be beneficial to clean out the inside of the showers. They were pretty disgusting and stayed pretty gross the whole time I was there. Lastly, I think it would also be beneficial to vacuum the steps and steam clean them. They smell pretty bad. Front desk employees were easy and friendly, and I greatly appreciate that. Kitchen had all I needed. Overall, again, all I needed an expected. But a few considerations for the future would potentially give them a higher score, at least in my mind.

The hostel is doing a good job of renovating. The staff also take safety and security very seriously. Unfortunately, there is a lot of homeless people in the area. The building is older, but they have updated the bathrooms and added USB charging ports into the electric sockets.

My stay at The European Hostel was an excellent experience, and I want to especially recognize the amazing staff and front desk service. The facilities are well-maintained, the beds are comfortable, and the common areas are welcoming with a great atmosphere. One thing that really stood out to me was seeing the front desk manager, Nick, personally taking care of the property. If he notices something doesn’t look clean or comfortable, he doesn’t wait for someone else—he will sweep, mop, and tidy up the rooms and kitchen himself. His goal is always to make sure every guest feels good energy and a positive vibe during their stay. Nick is always ready to assist guests with a smile, no matter how busy things get. Unfortunately, I also witnessed times when some guests disrespected him or even threatened him, simply because they didn’t want to follow the house rules. These are rules that keep a shared space clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. Sometimes people also leave bad reviews without realizing that they booked a shared facility with specific policies they agreed to before making a reservation. It’s important to understand how much effort and hard work Nick puts in every single day. He treats the hostel like his own home and works tirelessly to keep it safe and comfortable for all. Great location near bus stops and walking distance from most things. The manager/fromt desk guy was super accommodating and helped us out a lot. Very friendly. The rooms were cleaner than I expected, the mattresses are pretty bare bones and thin but its a hostel. The bathrooms were very clean and very nice, I was very surprised by them. Overall was a great stay for a big group. If you are expecting a king bed with room service this isnt your place, but if you need space to lay down and store your belongings for cheap its great

As stated earlier, I saw a mouse scurry across the lounge area while I was preparing a meal in the adjacent kitchen. I have a phobia with mice so it greatly startled me. Also, the owner was initially abrasive on the phone, not a good 1st impression.

The room had torn and stained linen. Two of the bathrooms were not in use. The two rhat were in use were dirty. The carpet on the stairs was sticky,, gross like it has never been washed. The handrails were also sticky. We could not wait to leave; unfortunately we had to wait until 9 a.m for the attendant to arrive to return our $20.00 deposit. I am so relieved we only booked one night. We killed a roach in our room. We slept in our clothe.

Disgusting place smells and looks like it hasn’t been cleaned since it was built over 100 years ago. It reeks of smoke and indian food. The walls have holes and are dirty and scratched. The bathroom are a messy and have poop on the walls. Ironic since he never stops mentioning that this is his property and that we need to keep everything looking good. Customer service is horrible. The owner is so full of himself and whenever you try to point something his excuse is always that they’re not or that the building is old. Also terrible area homeless crackheads everywhere and it never feels safe.

I wish I would have read the reviews before I booked. Totally spaced it. This place is a absolute s*** hole. Everything is sticky and dirty the smell in the whole place is rancid. And I am almost positive there was a rat in my room one night. By far the worst hostel I've stayed in. The location is ok depending on what you're doing. But the homeless is a problem every where in the city so you can't complain about that. I would not recommend this place at all.

Nick consistently ensures everything is in order and that house rules are followed. While some guests can be very rude to him, he always handles the situation in a calm and professional manner. Great location near bus stops and walking distance from most things. The manager/fromt desk guy was super accommodating and helped us out a lot. Very friendly. The rooms were cleaner than I expected, the mattresses are pretty bare bones and thin but its a hostel. The bathrooms were very clean and very nice, I was very surprised by them. Overall was a great stay for a big group. If you are expecting a king bed with room service this isnt your place, but if you need space to lay down and store your belongings for cheap its great

There are a group of homeless people just outside the hotel door. The road also doesn't seem safe. You can't even check out after 10PM. Their washroom is too dirty. And the private room has no amenities other than a bed. And even the bed sheet seems too dirty.

The services by Nick were impressive & courtesy. He showed me the alternative bus to airport & walked to show where the little bus stop is. I checked out early, and he was there to help. Facility is old & not so clean. No towel, mattress was old & thin. No bed bugs though.

Not worth any amount of money. Dangerous Back Alley Entrance. Room had a bunkbed...nothing else, no dresser,desk, chair,no curtains for privacy, no towels, pillow was flat like a comicbook, sheets too small for bed. Upper bed had dead bugs on it. Booked for 3 nights, Ran out after 1night...Front Desk person Thursday at 500 PM was a Asshat. Rebooked at Hotel Stratford...Great service, Bang for your Buck...much safer.

The European Hostile is okay. It's average. A Meh if maybe. It's quiet and I got some good sleep. However the bathrooms need a lot of work. If one shower doesn't have hot water then you have to go into another shower that has hot water, problems with the light staying on, and a overflowing waste basket. No this place isn't big and fancy but it's a hole in wall place where it's quiet as soon as you get inside and place to get some sleep. It's worth its salt.

I didn’t know much about San Francisco when I booked this place, and I wasn’t aware that it is in an area called “the Tenderloin”, which is known to be one of the rougher areas. That being said, I had very little worry and no issues while I was there. This place was pretty much what I expected when I booked it; just a place for me to sleep. I booked a twin room to myself as I was over the age of 30 and it was all I needed. But know that the room is literally a twin bunk bud and that’s it. I would recommend a desk or a nightstand or something in there in the future. Would be nice, but I’m not complaining. My sheets were clean and I was comfortable, and that is all that matters. Two recommendations I would make, other than a nightstand or something in the room, is a better cleaning in the shared bathrooms. I can tell they were serviced morning and night, but it would be beneficial to clean out the inside of the showers. They were pretty disgusting and stayed pretty gross the whole time I was there. Lastly, I think it would also be beneficial to vacuum the steps and steam clean them. They smell pretty bad. Front desk employees were easy and friendly, and I greatly appreciate that. Kitchen had all I needed. Overall, again, all I needed an expected. But a few considerations for the future would potentially give them a higher score, at least in my mind.

This hotel is a total scam! The price is low but this is what they do, they overbooked their rooms then if you arrive and they don't have a room for you and you've already paid they tell you they're not going to rent it to you for any reason so you go to try to get a refund they refuse to refund and say that you arrived after 10:00 p.m. when you did not they figuring you don't have the time and energy to see it all the way through they get away with it again and again and again and again total scam artists thieves and liars.

Manager was extremely rude, when I went to check out and give the key back he physically blocked me and started yelling at me and told me I had to wait for him to review security footage to make sure I had not taken a pair of his disgusting sheets, which I pointed at were on the floor in front of him. The disgusting hotel is only rivaled by the rudeness of the manager.

The front desk person was extremely rude, screamed at me, and demanded more money. He even threatened not to let me in. This all happened at 9 PM, and he knew we wouldn't be able to find another place to stay at that hour. That's the only way to explain his awful behavior.

⚠️ DEATH THREAT: MANAGER THREATENED TO SHOOT ME & CLAIMED "POLICE KNOW HIM"! Review Content: DANGER! THIS HOSTEL IS RUN BY CRIMINALS. DO NOT STAY HERE. 1. ASSAULT, GUN THREAT & INTIMIDATION (The Incident): On New Year's Eve, I returned soaking wet from the rain and used the laundry machine because no staff was present. The manager appeared and immediately became violent. • Physical Assault: He pushed and shoved me physically and threw my wet clothes on the dirty floor. • Death Threat: When I tried to explain, HE THREATENED TO SHOOT ME. • Corruption/Intimidation: He threatened to call the police. When I stood my ground and told him, "Please call them," he bragged, "The police know me," implying he has local connections and is above the law. He then kicked me out into the heavy rain in the middle of the night. I was terrified for my life and powerless against his threats. 2. Theft & Scam: He refused to refund my remaining nights and kept my $20 cash deposit. They force you to pay cash (against platform rules) and refuse to return it if you have an early flight. 3. I didn’t know much about San Francisco when I booked this place, and I wasn’t aware that it is in an area called “the Tenderloin”, which is known to be one of the rougher areas. That being said, I had very little worry and no issues while I was there. This place was pretty much what I expected when I booked it; just a place for me to sleep. I booked a twin room to myself as I was over the age of 30 and it was all I needed. But know that the room is literally a twin bunk bud and that’s it. I would recommend a desk or a nightstand or something in there in the future. Would be nice, but I’m not complaining. My sheets were clean and I was comfortable, and that is all that matters. Two recommendations I would make, other than a nightstand or something in the room, is a better cleaning in the shared bathrooms. I can tell they were serviced morning and night, but it would be beneficial to clean out the inside of the showers. They were pretty disgusting and stayed pretty gross the whole time I was there. I booked it thinking it was a hotel I couldn't get my money back so I left too many homeless on the streets no parking nasty outside but the guy who checked me in was real friendly and explained to me at the hostel I respect that from him other than that the outside with this nasty homeless everywhere I go on safe I wish I got my money back but like I told a man I'll just donate it to you thank you for the shower cuz it did take a shower

This youth hostel has a low rating but I've stayed more than 7 nights without any issues. Its centrally located and I always have a clean bed to sleep in. The manager is super nice and knows the area well. Always have some cash as he does charge a refundable cash deposit.

The bed sheets were dirty, room does not look like the picture at all, no space for clothes and other belongings. Tweakers screaming all night nobody came to check in on us. The windows were covered by another unit 😂. What a joke of a place. Avoid at all cost unless u are there just for sleep. Even the bathroom situation is a nightmare. Shared unsanitary bathroom with non isolation from shower to toilet all in one room.

My stay was 5 nights and I do not have any major complaints. The people I roomed with were nice and we did not get into each other's spaces. The room was relatively clean, just a few things from my roommates, but it does get pretty warm in there if you do not have your window open often. But gets cold if you leave it open during the night. Beds were comfy enough and the space provided to hold my belongings were perfect for my small luggage. The overall space of the room was a little smaller than expected for up to 6 people but if you're organized it will definitely work. As for the bathrooms, there were a couple times where we ran out of toilet paper so maybe staff should be more aware of that. Possibly an investment in toilet seat covers would be great as well. The shower wasn't super dirty, minus the little bit of hair left, and the water got to really hot and cold temperatures which I really appreciated! I did not use the kitchen really so I cannot comment much on it but when I was in there for a short time I seen a few bugs roaming. Not exactly sure which bug but none should be present at all. Overall, my stay was fine. I was only there to shower and lay my head for the convenience of a short trip to work. So, if you plan to use the place as a stopping point while you are traveling or need to shower and sleep this would be perfect for a cheap option. The stay was worth/equaled the price compared to many other places in SF. Side note: Do not recommend a car. Buses close

This place needs to be shut down this guy owner is not helpful. He’s very rude and when I went to the room, it was flies a lot. I couldn’t stay. I left the hotel right away. This guy is rude.
