There's this one moment when you set down your bags, open the window, and Zittau's old town quietly says hello – a church tower somewhere, cobblestones below, and a kind of calm you rarely find in a town this old. Right here, in the heart of the historic centre, is your home for a while. Our apartment is bright, modern and put together with real care – nothing off the shelf. A fully equipped kitchen with an oven for whatever you feel like cooking, fast free WiFi, a comfortable living area with a TV for a lazy evening in, and a bed you'll happily sink into after a long day outdoors. Because we know how annoying it is to hunt for parking on holiday, your own on-site spot is waiting for you. And after a day of exploring, the private hot tub is the perfect way to unwind – warm water, quiet evening, nothing else on the agenda. Travelling with your dog? Bring them along. Coming as a family? Children are very welcome. This is a place to genuinely feel at home, not just somewhere to sleep. Zittau is one of those towns you underestimate – until you're there. A market square with baroque fountains and a proud old town hall, narrow lanes where nearly every house has a story, and right in the middle a real world treasure: the Great Zittau Lenten Veil of 1472, a vast, centuries-old painted cloth of a kind you'll find almost nowhere else on earth. It hangs in the Church of the Holy Cross, and even people who usually shrug at museums end up standing in front of it, quietly amazed. Climb the tower of St. John's afterwards and the whole old town – with the mountains behind it – lies at your feet. And then there's the nature that starts practically at the doorstep. The Zittau Mountains are Germany's smallest range – but don't underestimate them. Strange sandstone rock formations, deep forests, viewpoints where you briefly forget to keep walking. There are trails for every level, from an easy family stroll to the Nonnenfelsen rocks up to the Lausche, the region's highest peak, with a view across three countries. In Jonsdorf the old millstone quarries and the butterfly house are worth a stop; in Oybin, the legendary monastery ruins that once inspired the painter Caspar David Friedrich. On two wheels? Even better. The region is a dream for cycling – gently along the Neisse river, across into the Czech Republic and Poland, or up into the hills if you want a challenge. And motorcyclists absolutely get their money's worth here: the winding country roads through Upper Lusatia and over the borders are pure joy. Just ask us – we're happy to share our favourite loops and the best places to stop along the way. One thing you simply have to do, especially with kids: ride the Zittau narrow-gauge steam railway, known to everyone here as "the Bimmelbahn". A real steam engine that puffs and whistles its way up to Oybin and Jonsdorf. The smell of coal and steam, the rattle of the old carriages, the whistle before every bend – that's hands-on nostalgia, in summer just as much as in deep winter with snow on the trees. But maybe the best thing about Zittau is where it sits: right in the three-country corner. Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic – all three just minutes away. A coffee in the old town in the morning, a trip into the Czech Republic at midday, an evening stroll in Poland? Here that's completely normal. Görlitz is a must: Germany's easternmost town, about half an hour away, so beautifully and completely preserved that half of Hollywood has filmed here – locals fondly call it "Görliwood". Cross the bridge and you're on foot in Polish Zgorzelec: two countries, one walk. If you like things original and a little out of time, drive out to Obercunnersdorf – one of the loveliest timber-framed villages anywhere. This special "Umgebinde" style of building, part half-timber, part log room, is found almost only here in this border region of the three countries. A walk through the village feels as if time has been gently paused, in the best possible way. And one more gem just around the corner: Herrnhut. The famous Herrnhut star – the Moravian star many of you might know from your own Christmas window – was born right here. In the workshop you can watch the stars still being made by hand, point by point. It's a lovely trip all year round, and almost magical in Advent, when the whole region smells of gingerbread and the windows glow with stars. Because that's the thing: Zittau has its own face in every season. Spring, when the forests turn green again. Summer at the nearby Olbersdorf lake, where you can jump in after a hike. Golden autumn in the mountains, when the rocks glow above the coloured woods. And Advent, when the stars and light arches shine in the windows and the whole place smells of Christmas.
