Wonderful hotel in a great location in Matera. Each room was different and wonderful (we had four rooms). The staff was great and the transfers to/from the parking garage were perfect. We would absolutely stay here again!

The location of H Basiliani is absolutely stunning, on the side of the gorge, in the middle of Matera's sassi area. There are cave dwellings (some renovated, some not) either side of the hotel buildings, and the breakfast terrace and some of the rooms (including ours) have panoramic views across the gorge at older caves on the other side. Our room was very large (split level, obviously meant for a family rather than just the two of us!), calm and comfortable. My only criticism is that the bathroom was about due for another coat of paint. Because the hotel is in the historic area, you cannot drive to it. You need to leave your car somewhere in the modern part of town (the hotel can advise on a choice of car-parks), and then call the hotel, who send their shuttle to collect you and your luggage. They also offered to shuttle us back to our car if we wanted to go out for the day, but there is enough in Matera (within walking/climbing distance) to keep you busy for a couple of days, so we didn't bother. I have read complaints about people waiting for the shuttle - this is only a small hotel, so there are only one or two vehicles - as long as you know there might be a wait, I don't see this as an issue. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and I can't think of a better location to stay in Matera! If this is your first visit to Matera, bring a satnav or a decent map. The street signs in the modern town are dreadful, and we spent nearly an hour driving round completely lost.

The property is perfectly situated at the side of a mountain canyon offering spectacular views, far from the noisy streets, although you might get the small groups of tourists with their guide. I think it is one of the best locations in town. You are just minutes away from many great restaurants and shops, but it is also tranquil most of the day. No one would know the beautiful caves are actually part of a hotel. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, speaking a few languages. Very responsive, most of our extra requests were completed within a reasonable time. The hotel offers free shuttle from many parking areas in Matera to the hotel, otherwise inaccessible by your own car as the ZTL is in effect most of the day.

Location, location, location….👍 Room and facilities are awesome. The only issue, there is limited shuttle as there is no parking around the hotel, so one has to wait. But other than that, everything was beautiful!

Great location with helpful and friendly staffs. Like the free pickup/drop-off from parking garage, breakfast is pretty good, the location (right in Sassi) is pretty cool and decent options on restaurants and cafes.

Truly fantastic boutique hotel! Such an amazing find! Highly recommended. Parking is free and easy to find. The hotel picks you up and takes you into the city. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. On the day of our departure we needed to leave very early and they had a full breakfast ready for us and gave us a ride back to our car with no problem at all. The location at the edge of the cliff is absolutely stunning and the views are unparalleled. The rooms themselves are unique and very well appointed. The bathroom in our room needs to be repainted and the loft where the kids slept got very hot. But other than that we can't find a single fault with this lovely spot in a beautiful city!

Ficamos duas noites no Hotel Basiliani, no mês de novembro, quando Matera estava tranquila e lindíssima. O hotel está localizado na área do Sasso Caveoso, uma parte histórica muito charmosa, a cerca de 10 minutos de uma linda caminhada do centro. Como não é permitido estacionar na área do hotel, eles oferecem um serviço de transfer extremamente conveniente. Deixamos o carro em um estacionamento gratuito indicado por eles, fora da zona ZTL, e tanto na chegada quanto na partida a equipe nos buscou e levou até o carro, ajudando com as malas e sendo sempre muito cordial e prestativa. Nosso quarto era moderno , amplo e confortável. Porém, sentimos que, por ser tão moderno, perde um pouco da atmosfera típica de Matera. A iluminação muito branca e a decoração interna não conversam tanto com os tons terrosos e a sensação de “caverna” que muitos hóspedes buscam ao se hospedar nos Sassi. Uma luz mais quente e uma ambientação mais integrada à estética da cidade tornariam o quarto ainda mais especial. Outro ponto a observar é que, em novembro, o ar-condicionado não funciona, o que nos fez sentir calor em alguns momentos e nos obrigou a manter as janelas abertas para melhorar a temperatura do quarto. Ainda assim, a combinação de boa localização, estrutura no geral confortável e uma equipe muito atenciosa fez da estadia uma experiência positiva.

Lovely breakfast, lovely hotel. Minor point the bathroom in room 125 could do with a lick of paint to freshen it up but overall anyone booking this hotel will be making a good choice in a unique location

The hotel was good and space in room was excellent. Limited cleaning during stay but ok for our 2 days. Shower rod kept falling and it was never fixed.

It’s ok hotel for fit people but several areas of mold in the bathrooms ( we had friends in another room- same mold) is unacceptable! Extremely dangerous step down at the bathroom entrance- waiting for accident to happen! Great breakfast!

I would give the service at this place 10 stars out of 5 if I could! We arrived at some random bus stop in the bottom of town because their main station is closed for remodeling, so I didn't really know where we were when I called the shuttle. Nino just asked me the name of the street & came to get us. By the next morning, we had fallen in love with the town and changed our itinerary for the rest of the trip to spend more time in Matera, but they didn't have space for us to stay longer. They called around and found us a place at another amazing hotel. When it was time to check out, they had it all arranged to simply simply transfer our bags and pick up new keys at the other hotel. As for the hotel itself, the rooms were huge, clean and very unique. Very cool hotel in an amazing town.

Fantastic hotel located in what used to be cave houses. Great location in Sassi and amazing view of the gorge. Very much appreciated the directions to free parking at the university and the complimentary hotel shuttle which arrived quickly and made parking easy and stress free. Friendly and helpful staff who provided a map of where to go and all major sights which are within walking distance. Some lovely restaurants also close by. Great mini bar and fridge with good selection of drinks and snacks and inexpensive. Only slight negative would be that the bathroom could do with a bit of TLC but despite this is very clean. Would stay again and fully recommend.

This hotel was so cool! The view is stunning! We definitely appreciated the free parking outside of the downtown (perfect directions provided by the hotel) and the shuttle to/from the hotel. The room was spacious and had a loft. We were 4 people and had lots of space. The lighting used was perfect for the cave setting and the light up furniture was a hit with my kids. We also appreciated having AC as it was very hot in June. The surrounding area was easily walkable (but be warned, there are a lot of stairs in matera!) and we got to the various sites easily. Breakfast was included and was great. Would definitely recommend this hotel!

The property is located in the Sassi- these are stone cave dwellings of ancient times. They are amazing. Our hotel room was a modern version with beautiful design appointments and a spectacular view.

This was our favorite hotel on the trip. The staff were great offering wonderful suggestions, arranging a tour and taxi to catch our very early train. They even have us breakfast before we left. ❤️ the room was beautiful. I can't recommend this hotel enough if you want to stay in the sassi caveoso.

Personalet var ekseptionelt venlige. Gav meget gode råd til seværdigheder, hiking, restauranter. Hotellet og værelset var specielt indrettet i grotter. Værelset var stort og moderne indrettet, god smag. En gennemført dejlig oplevelse. Næste gang ofrer jeg et værelse med udsigt over bjergene.

This is a fantastic boutique hotel. The room was so comfortable. It has the most comfortable bed we’ve experienced in Italy. Clean, modern rooms in a gorgeous historical setting. The staff was so kind and helpful. They offer a shuttle service from a parking lot outside of town that made things so much easier. Highly recommend.

Truly fantastic boutique hotel! Such an amazing find! Highly recommended. Parking is free and easy to find. The hotel picks you up and takes you into the city. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. On the day of our departure we needed to leave very early and they had a full breakfast ready for us and gave us a ride back to our car with no problem at all. The location at the edge of the cliff is absolutely stunning and the views are unparalleled. The rooms themselves are unique and very well appointed. The bathroom in our room needs to be repainted and the loft where the kids slept got very hot. But other than that we can't find a single fault with this lovely spot in a beautiful city!

Ficamos duas noites no Hotel Basiliani, no mês de novembro, quando Matera estava tranquila e lindíssima. O hotel está localizado na área do Sasso Caveoso, uma parte histórica muito charmosa, a cerca de 10 minutos de uma linda caminhada do centro. Como não é permitido estacionar na área do hotel, eles oferecem um serviço de transfer extremamente conveniente. Deixamos o carro em um estacionamento gratuito indicado por eles, fora da zona ZTL, e tanto na chegada quanto na partida a equipe nos buscou e levou até o carro, ajudando com as malas e sendo sempre muito cordial e prestativa. Nosso quarto era moderno , amplo e confortável. Porém, sentimos que, por ser tão moderno, perde um pouco da atmosfera típica de Matera. A iluminação muito branca e a decoração interna não conversam tanto com os tons terrosos e a sensação de “caverna” que muitos hóspedes buscam ao se hospedar nos Sassi. Uma luz mais quente e uma ambientação mais integrada à estética da cidade tornariam o quarto ainda mais especial. Outro ponto a observar é que, em novembro, o ar-condicionado não funciona, o que nos fez sentir calor em alguns momentos e nos obrigou a manter as janelas abertas para melhorar a temperatura do quarto. Ainda assim, a combinação de boa localização, estrutura no geral confortável e uma equipe muito atenciosa fez da estadia uma experiência positiva.

This hotel was so cool! The view is stunning! We definitely appreciated the free parking outside of the downtown (perfect directions provided by the hotel) and the shuttle to/from the hotel. The room was spacious and had a loft. We were 4 people and had lots of space. The lighting used was perfect for the cave setting and the light up furniture was a hit with my kids. We also appreciated having AC as it was very hot in June. The surrounding area was easily walkable (but be warned, there are a lot of stairs in matera!) and we got to the various sites easily. Breakfast was included and was great. Would definitely recommend this hotel!

This was our favorite hotel on the trip. The staff were great offering wonderful suggestions, arranging a tour and taxi to catch our very early train. They even have us breakfast before we left. ❤️ the room was beautiful. I can't recommend this hotel enough if you want to stay in the sassi caveoso.

Was unable to partake in breakfast. Most of the staff was very nice and helpful except the man (or shuttle driver) when we arrived that nite. I don’t appreciate being yelled at by staff at a hotel I paid for. Was not very understanding and rude.

I would give the service at this place 10 stars out of 5 if I could! We arrived at some random bus stop in the bottom of town because their main station is closed for remodeling, so I didn't really know where we were when I called the shuttle. Nino just asked me the name of the street & came to get us. By the next morning, we had fallen in love with the town and changed our itinerary for the rest of the trip to spend more time in Matera, but they didn't have space for us to stay longer. They called around and found us a place at another amazing hotel. When it was time to check out, they had it all arranged to simply simply transfer our bags and pick up new keys at the other hotel. As for the hotel itself, the rooms were huge, clean and very unique. Very cool hotel in an amazing town.

Excellent séjour à Matera essentiellement dans la ville ancienne magnifique avec un charme fou, on a visité toutes les églises très riches d’histoire et de fresques restaurées. The location of H Basiliani is absolutely stunning, on the side of the gorge, in the middle of Matera's sassi area. There are cave dwellings (some renovated, some not) either side of the hotel buildings, and the breakfast terrace and some of the rooms (including ours) have panoramic views across the gorge at older caves on the other side. Our room was very large (split level, obviously meant for a family rather than just the two of us!), calm and comfortable. My only criticism is that the bathroom was about due for another coat of paint. Because the hotel is in the historic area, you cannot drive to it. You need to leave your car somewhere in the modern part of town (the hotel can advise on a choice of car-parks), and then call the hotel, who send their shuttle to collect you and your luggage. They also offered to shuttle us back to our car if we wanted to go out for the day, but there is enough in Matera (within walking/climbing distance) to keep you busy for a couple of days, so we didn't bother. I have read complaints about people waiting for the shuttle - this is only a small hotel, so there are only one or two vehicles - as long as you know there might be a wait, I don't see this as an issue. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and I can't think of a better location to stay in Matera! If this is your first visit to Matera, bring a satnav or a decent map. The street signs in the modern town are dreadful, and we spent nearly an hour driving round completely lost.

The property is perfectly situated at the side of a mountain canyon offering spectacular views, far from the noisy streets, although you might get the small groups of tourists with their guide. I think it is one of the best locations in town. You are just minutes away from many great restaurants and shops, but it is also tranquil most of the day. No one would know the beautiful caves are actually part of a hotel. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, speaking a few languages. Very responsive, most of our extra requests were completed within a reasonable time. The hotel offers free shuttle from many parking areas in Matera to the hotel, otherwise inaccessible by your own car as the ZTL is in effect most of the day.

Wonderful experience in a cave! Beautiful, clean room with an incredible bathroom with spa shower. Our experience was absolutely perfect. The hotel provided clear and courteous parking instructions, a super fast shuttle (to and from the free parking area), fast check-in and luggage assistance all the way into our room. The room is clean, spacious, modern enough to feel fun and yet it retains the feeling of the Sassi. The town is beautiful and the people are so kind and out-going. Our breakfast was wonderful and fresh each day and they make espresso and cappucino for you as well. We hope to come back to Sassi di Matera and will definitely stay here.

We were knocked out by the comtempory feel and stylish interior to what is simply a cave. It was fresh and perfect. The staff were so friendly and knowledgeable. Even the lovely lady at breakfast remembered what we liked to drink with our breakfast.

We loved our stay at here. Hotel is in a great location with an amazing view on the ravine and the oldest part of Matera. Restaurants in walking distance and well placed within the city. Staff was SUPER helpful, even helping us through a crazy situation when our rental car was almost towed from the free parking because of a misunderstanding about when it would close for the city to mow. Thank goodness their shuttle driver was there to translate the situation to the police! They even offered to pay the ticket we got since they had suggested this parking (not knowing that the city would be closing it to mow). Breakfast was great with a variety of options from proteins to pastries. The only thing I would suggest to the hotel is adding a dehumidifier to each cave room. There was a bit of a musty smell in the room and it was quite humid making the linens feel almost damp. I’m sure this is normal for a cave, but I do think a dehumidifier would help! Beds were very comfortable and ac worked well. Overall a fabulous stay!

Du début à la fin cet hôtel était un réel plaisir. L’hôtelier vient vous chercher au parking à l'extérieur des Sassis . L’accueil est attentionné. La chambre véritable habitation troglodyte est superbement équipée et donne sur une petite terrasse face au « canyon ». Le petit déjeuner est excellent. Bref dormir dans une telle habitation au diapason de cette cité étonnante est une expérience qu’on oublie pas.
