Hotel El Capitan

Hotel is quite lovely. Food in restaurant was fair in quality. Elevator did nt work so we had to lug everything up the stairs. We were given a room in the far corner of the hotel so we had to also lug everything down there. Said the room overlooked the courtyard but you couldn't see it for the tall tree. Trains ran down the track every 30 min or so, so sleep was impossible.

The pet areas were plentiful and s t up well.

It's an old/historic property that has been renovated and nicely returned to service. It's a pleasure and a unique experience to stay there...I have more than ten times. The parking involves a "bag drag". Can't be helped, but it's still a "pain" each time.

It was very unique. Loved all the detail to keep to the original design. Breakfast was delicious. Free laundry facility a plus. People were very friendly. Place was very clean. Would recommend to everyone we know if going to visit there. This is the place to stay.

I absolutely loved my stay at the Hotel El Capitan. Parking was a breeze, plenty of space and just steps from the entrance. Inside, the place is full of history and charm, from the architecture to the decor. It’s one of those hotels where you can feel the past still alive in the walls, but everything is comfortable and welcoming. The bar and restaurant were excellent. I ordered the pistachio chicken fried steak, which was as unique as it was delicious, and the limoncello margarita was one of the best cocktails I’ve had anywhere in West Texas. Both were reasons alone to come back. My room overlooked the front of the hotel with a beautiful view of the mountains. It was peaceful, and at night, I opened the balcony doors to the courtyard, cool air drifting in while the sound of the fountain made it easy to relax and fall asleep. It was a memorable stay from start to finish. The Hotel El Capitan is a real gem, and I’ll definitely be back the next time I’m heading out to my property.

The building is very old, which leads to the rooms being small. Especially the bathroom… you only have one place to stand, to the right is the toilet, the left is the sink, and straight ahead is the tub/shower. The restaurant has good food, but is overpriced as unless you are in a group, you get ignored by the wait staff. Getting to the hotel from the parking lot it is filled with gravel and pavement which hasn’t been repaired in several years. Very rough for dragging a bag to the hard to find lobby to check in

The lady at the front desk, is it Amelia? She makes me feel very welcome when checking in, and throughout the stay. Tending to any needs that arise, and is very nice. Just wanted to give her a shout out! Honestly, everyone is really nice. I just love this hotel. I stayed on my way traveling in from CA, and loved it so much that I decided to stay again on my way back out of TX. The bar, restaurant, safety, courtyard patio, clean/cozy room and lovely bed, are all reasons why I love this hotel.

The property was beautiful. The room was clean. The staff was pleasant. They had a private party the night we stayed. That made the bar and restaurant unavailable and the parking lot was full so we had to park on the street. These things happen so definitely no a knock on the property. I’d definitely stay again if I were in the area.

Safe location. Front desk Staff is super nice, warm, friendly. Beds are really comfortable, towels are soft! Water pressure and heat are great! Be mindful of smaller parking lot (though it’s lit up like a dealership which is good), if you had a lot of luggage like us (moving across country) there’s no easy access like regular hotels to grab the trolley right in front of the door. You have to park in a single thirty minute spot outside on the street curb and walk into the hotel to grab it and walk it pretty far from outside the building. See Google maps front of the building, that’s where folks walk into to check in. Train only sounded a couple times around midnight, loud but it was just a minute or so. We were still up. AC isn’t really strong, but was enough with the ceiling fans in the bigger suite. Other than that, we enjoyed the historical aspect of the building and appreciate the front desk gentleman and his accommodating demeanor - especially after driving for ten hours! Fridge is a nice touch too!

I always stay here when I'm nearby! Such an awesome hotel! Ask about the parking lot across the street if you can't find a spot.

The outdoor patio attached to our room was dirty and full of leaves. The table and chairs were so dirty that we couldn't sit outside or enjoy the patio.

We were only there for the night but it was even prettier than the photos. The rooms were very nice and very clean. I will be going back.

Beautiful court yard and building. Did not like that we had to push the luggage cart to the parking lot to load our luggage. Paid 45$ for our mini yorkie to stay and when we got up to the room I had to clean dog poop up from the threshold to the bathroom from previous dog.

The room was spotless and the staff was wonderful. We look for any chance to stay there. We love it.

The hotel is beautiful, Warm and welcoming. The front desk and staff are efficient and helpful and greeted us with freshly made cookies and smiles. The rooms are a little small but beautiful and very clean. The restaurant is wonderful. We had dinner and a nicely laid out well maintained free breakfast.

I've stayed at this hotel over the years and the hotel staff is always outstanding!! They always go above and beyond to take care of the guest. It's always clean and beautifully decorated.

This is a quaint, historical hotel. Rooms are very small, especially the bathroom, but the staff is wonderful, it’s convenient to the freeway, and they have an in-hotel bar and restaurant that is top notch!

Charming small hotel with a lovely little courtyard and period furniture. Friendly service. Small but clean rooms with tiny bathrooms. A/C blows directly on the bed, which is otherwise quite comfy. The restaurant was mediocre with friendly but poor service.

Loved everything about the hotel but the bed was like sleeping on the ground. Very hard and I like firm mattresses.

Got the room right off the hotel lobby. It is extremely loud, we can hear every conversation from the people that have gathered in the lobby, not sure when they will leave so I can get some sleep

Property itself and staff is very nice, but the walls are thin and able to hear neighbors next door.

We love this hotel and will stay here again. But…this stay we had a room with a noisy AC and a too soft bed, thus not a very restful stay. Staff was wonderful as always and breakfast was very good.

Our room was very clean with comfortable bed. I liked the little patio/ balcony off of our room. Bathroom was small but in the style of 1930’s - very nice. Liked they had little bottles of lotion, shampoo etc. Very nice courtyard where we ate dinner & had drinks.

The shower in room 227 was either cold or super hot, nothing in between, so we couldn’t shower. The breakfast was supposed to be at 6, it was moved to 7 because they were not ready.

Our room was very comfortable, but its location at the front of the hotel & adjacent to the road was very loud with traffic noise AND a frequent train. A different location would probably have been better. Otherwise, the experience was excellent and the hotel is charming.

I stayed one night, enjoyed it enough I booked a 2nd night (both via Hotels.com) Unfortunately, somehow, go to check in for the 2nd night (they didn’t have the same type of room for the 2nd night, so had to check out and check back in, which in itself was fine / reasonable). But crazy enough they didn’t have my 2nd night reservation when I went to check in I found the front desk attendant very unaccomadating and frankly, rude. I was told I had to contact Hotels.com, and that was basically it. Just crazy to me considering I had booked the same exact way via Hotels.com for 2 different nights, 1 reservation they got fine, 1 reservation they “didn’t receive”. Also surprising they didn’t contact Hotels.com considering I showed them my confirmation number / email for the reservation (especially considering I expected ultimately in the end they’d have to talk directly to Hotels.com anyways). But whatever. I went through the motions. Called Hotels.com, confirmed my reservation was made, just as I expected, and ultimately eventually Hotels.com ended up on the phone with the front desk. The front desk for whatever reason was just really dug in on “not having my reservation”, it was almost bizarre. I honestly (as much as l liked this hotel) was dangerously close to saying heck with it, telling Hotels.com to refund me and stay somewhere else. I ended up staying there the 2nd night, the front desk finally just accepted I had a reservation, but the customer service, yikes

Close to on/off freeway, rooms very clean and comfortable. Pet friendly. Included breakfast was very good.

Hotel doubled billed for room.I have a charge for the same room for the same night on two different credit cards. The hotel refuses to work with me to resolve the dispute. Needless to say, this is poor customer service.

This is a historic, unique property. Unfortunately, the hotel couldn’t seem to find my Expedia reservation and had to book me differently. It took quite a bit of time to get checked in. Another man behind me was having problems because they put him in a room that was already occupied. They just don’t seem very organized. I was supposed to receive credit toward food and drinks in the restaurant on site, but they did not provide those to me…they said they couldn’t. No reason why.

This is a great hotel out in the middle of West Texas. The hotel was great, but the staff made it fantastic. They have a wonderful restaurant. A fun experience and we will definitely be back.

This is a beautiful historical hotel with comfortable facilities. It is right by the train tracks which goes all night and is quite loud.

Beautiful, well maintained hotel. I gem in Van Horn with easy access to i10. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent.

Perfect location for two very popular National Parks....Big Bend and Guadeloupe National Park. Also very convenient to the Davis Mountains State Park. Scenery surrounding the area is stunning and the Hotels food is delicious and prices are reasonable. The free continential breakfast is excellent. We will go back and also recommend to friends and family.

This was a charming place to stay, easy to access from the highway, well let in the parking lot. Charming place to rest after a long day on the road.

This is a historic building and charming. The rooms are small but expected for an older hotel. For one night we hung around the charming courtyard and ate food at the restaurant. The drinks and food are excellent. Downside is the surrounding area. It is safe but feels poverty stricken.

The courtyard entrance to the property is magical and inviting. Plenty of cozy places to sit and enjoy the evening. Our balcony door opened to the courtyard. The sound of the running water from the grand fountain was relaxing. The continental breakfast was lovely. Train tracks are very close, so we did hear a couple of trains go through in the night. Wouldn’t keep us from staying again and again.

El Capitan is one of a handful of hotel treasures in Texas, architectural masterpieces renovated to modern standards. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Food was great and the dinner menu ranges from wings and burgers to prime steaks. Two or three trains came through Van Horn Sunday night, waking us up. Nothing the hotel can do about trains, and Van Horn is so small that any visitor in any other hotel probably woke up to the trains like my wife and did.

Hotel is in the middle of nowhere Texas,and it is an absolute gem.

We’ve stayed here many times. The rooms are small but very clean, nice bedding and towels. We had a very poor meal, waited 30 minutes and a portion of the meal was obviously older food mixed in with fresher ingredients. I sent my meal back, my wife did not, they took 20% off our check but really, they knew what they were serving. Our wait staff seemed scattered, we ordered a glass of wine and that took twenty minutes. Will stay here again this year but look elsewhere for dining.

We were very impressed with the quality of the renovation work. The hotel is truly beautiful. No cheap furnishings here, lovely furniture and linens. The courtyard is gorgeous ~ lush and tropical feeling. I did love it. The one place we were disappointed in was the dining room. We expected a more elegant ambiance befitting the rest of the hotel. The food was average good, not great. Breakfast offerings were plenty but not impressive. I’d rather have fewer offerings and more natural foods. Powdered scrambled eggs, really?? Nevertheless less we would love to stay there again.

Breakfast area was clean but in a nice hotel like El Capitan I hoped for more than frozen eggs. Coffee was weak and no real cream only coffee mate. Stale packaged breakfast bars maybe out of date. Hostess was very nice. Quality of food was average

Beautifully restored historic hotel. The patio made the room feel much larger. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The dinner was very good with excellent service. Breakfast included several hot options-more than just a continental breakfast. Would definitely stay again.
