No food available when arrived at 6.30pm after travelling 6 hours. No chef available, bar staff lady said food MIGHT start 8.30pm, owner not in till later. No lift, room on 3rd floor, no-one to assist with luggage. Reception on first floor, no other people there - they must have known how awful it was. Expedia should review keeping this awful hotel on their books. Even local people have since advised not to use it. It was so awful we found alternative accomodation.

I really enjoyed my stay here. The location right by the river made it a great day as the sun was shining all day. There was a great selection of drinks in the bar. Pool, darts and skysports available. Loved the little snug/cocktail room with plenty of retro games to play from the windows. The onsite American food van provided us with some delicious food. We had the philli-cheese steak baguette. It was lush! Beds were really comfy. Credit goes to the owners who were very warm and pleasant.

Unfortunately, this was by far the worst hotel experience of my life. As soon as I entered the hotel, I was gobsmacked by the horrible smell of the lobby. The carpet looked like it has never been cleaned. An elderly woman was struggling walking down the stairs as they had no lift. Nothing wrong with not having an elevator, but this should be noted prominently on the website in case anyone with physical limitations will know this before booking. I had room number 8. I go into the room and was perplexed that there was no bathroom/toilet/shower. I asked the staff person, (friendly and helpful)… where is the bathroom? She explained for that room, it is across the hall. Talk about a major inconvenience! I went down to the bar/restaurant to ask about any vegan options. This area had the same horrible smell and filthy environment. I knew right then I would do a take-away and eat in my room. There wasn’t anything on the menu I could have which was bizarre because their online menu had several options for vegans. (This was one of the reasons why I booked this place.) Anyhow, I asked the staff person if the chef could prepare something suitable for me. The answer… go to the local Co-Op, buy something vegan and the chef would prepare a vegan meal! I will never stay here again and wouldn’t book a room if they paid me to stay there.

Booked for one night to explore the area, hotel was great, nice location, nice bar, most of the staff were friendly and smiley. can only offer an option on my room, unfortunately the bed is the most uncomfortable I have slept in.

Pub has amazing riverside patios we had a drink then went to check in . The bar was very busy with one girl serving and doing her best . She needed help to check us in as she did not know what room to allocate but could not raise the boss as he was in bed at 4pm once she raised him he did not come down to help her and she finally got us checked in . The room was not in good condition with the walls filled in and painted different shades . The carpet was not that clean . Bedding was clean . At 730am we were woke by the fire alarm and evacuated the building but was no staff on site to advise . After about 10 minutes in the car park a guy arrived who had nipped out to the coop and turned off alarm no apology. Breakfast was surprisingly good .

Parking at the pub hotel was difficult as there is only a small car park and there are very narrow streets around the area. As there was no sign of a reception, checking in was challenging. The rooms themselves were very good, clean and had tea-making facilities, TV and an en-suite bathroom. The dinner menu was limited, but the breakfast menu was excellent. Be aware, the Friday night disco and karaoke goes on to 3.00am.

Meal ordering was haphazard. I ordered a starter of soup but it did not arrive. I asked for a glass of water to go with my meal; I was asked if I wanted ice, I said yes please but was given a small glass of tepid water with no ice, on one of the hottest days of the year. At breakfast, I took some Bran Flakes but when I got to my table and started to eat them, I found there were nut flakes in them. I am allergic to nuts. There was no warning on the Bran Flake dispenser that nuts had been added. Also, the cooked breakfast consisted of a very small hash brown; one and a half small mushrooms, half a rasher of bacon, an adequate sausage and a fried egg, which was going cold by the time it arrived (also most hotels these days ask if you if want fried, scrambled, poached etc). Finally, although the room and the bathroom in general were clean and tidy, there was huge amounts of disgusting soap scum on the shower hose and on the bottom and behind the concertina shower doors, which cannot have been cleaned for months, if not years.

I really enjoyed my stay here. I was travelling for business so had little time for site seeing but the area was beautiful. Hotel was spotlessly clean and the food was amazing. Clearly run by someone who wants to provide excellent service. If I visit the area again this is the first hotel I will try to book.

Booked a one-night stay while in the area for business. Check-in was fine and I was shown to my room and informed about breakfast by the bar maid. The room (room 3) was mouldy and needs updating. Mattress was one of the most uncomfortable things I've slept on. Bathroom was covered in mould and black mildew in the shower. It was late and I was tired or I would have moved hotels. Breakfast was great in a nice light and airy room, friendly chef took my order and it was delivered shortly after. Can't complain about breakfast but the room was shocking. Won't be staying here again.

The staff were fantastic. The room was clean and spacious . The location is spectacular and the Anchor hotel is a very highly recommended place to stay. I will happily stay here again.

This was a terrible weekend. The bedroom was very down at heal. The shower was dirty and in need of serious maintenance. Window could only stay open by wedging a book ( bible!) In the gap. No restaurant service and a poor breakfast. Then to top it all we didn't get a refund as we only stopped 2 nights instead of 3. Not even any response from the hotel to Hotels.com who we booked through or direct email from us.
This was a terrible weekend. The bedroom was very down at heal. The shower was dirty and in need of serious maintenance. Window could only stay open by wedging a book ( bible!) In the gap. It was one night, the staff and owner are lovely and friendly and really want to do a good job. But the hotel is in dire need of investment and a good clean. The owner is lovely but seems like a fish out of water in this hotel. Does not feel like he has much experience in the hotel industry, can’t see this hotel surviving the winter.

A complete nightmare of a hotel that I would not recommend to anyone. The only positive was that bedding was clean. The rooms on the surface lock clean, but there are cobwebs and dust everywhere, there is mould in the shower, also there is no tea making facilities in the rooms. The evening meal was a choice of two meals, which were badly cooked with my steak being covered in oil and burnt, and my fiancé meal being cold. We were kept awake till the early hours by people that had been in the bar outside drinking, fighting and generally being noisy, all around our car and other guests cars , with no one from the hotel staff (some including the owners living in the hotel) interested in moving them on or what damage they were causing ( in the morning my car had loads of broken glass from bottles etc around it ) Breakfast was very poor, my bacon was swimming in grease and looked like it had been cooked in a deep fat fryer, there was mould on the bread which we pointed out to the owner but wasn’t replaced. I know the owners are new and are from America, but I recommend that they hire a decent chef and not try to cook themselves, and sort the rooms out and firstly bring them up to date, the decor being a very poor eighties throwback, and supply the rooms with what guest expect to find kettles etc. Also sort out the rowdy elements that drink in the hotel bar, guests do not need to worry about their car etc being vandalised whilst in the hotel car park

We stayed here to attend a family wedding . Unfortunately I did not take any photos of this room . Let me start with no en-suite in room . Then a small sink in room with one small mirror let’s just say glad I didn’t need to style and dry my hair there was a squeezed up to the wardrobe . Window frame all rotten it’s wedge open does not close . Radiator loose hanging off wall . Ripped wallpaper . Desperate in need of modernisation. Nice Bar friendly staff. Rooms should be closed until re burnished .

Then a small sink in room with one small mirror let’s just say glad I didn’t need to style and dry my hair there was a squeezed up to the wardrobe . Window frame all rotten it’s wedge open does not close . Radiator loose hanging off wall . Ripped wallpaper . Desperate in need of modernisation. Nice Bar friendly staff. Rooms should be closed until re burnished .

This hotel is in a prime location. It’s very old. But a coat of paint clean grout and bedding that had been ironed would make all the difference Drink at the bar was very expensive compared to other bars in the town. Staff were lovely and breakfast wasn’t bad. Although everything had been pre cooked It could be beautiful if the owner just put in a bit of effort

Intriguing spot Haydon Bridge and if you want to try it out the Anchor is the perfect spot to stop off. The hosts were warm and welcoming and nothing was too small to help with. Room was clean, smart and beautiful view of the river ask for this. Food was good pub grub, my Chilli beef was better than average for a pub. Would go back.

This hotel was very reasonably priced, so we didn't have high expectations, and were happy to put up with it being a bit tatty, we just wanted a cheap base to start off our trip around Northumberland...however, the one thing we didn't expect and couldn't put up with was the mattress - I actually didn't know mattresses that bad existed - there were springs poking out all over and it was almost impossible to sleep on - in the middle of the night, we actually considered sleeping on the floor and were only put off by the carpet being weirdly sticky in places. We'd booked for 2 nights, but left after the first one, bought an air bed and slept in the van - which was much more comfortable. if it wasn't for the mattress I would have given this hotel a reasonably good rating as I thought it was OK for the price - although the room was a bit tatty and in need of updating, the staff were friendly, the room was clean, and the breakfast was decent. The building actually has a ton of character and sits in a nice location - it could be lovely with a bit of a makeover. For the time being though - at least get new mattresses - people are throwing better ones in skips - you could probably get one for free!

Unfortunately, this was by far the worst hotel experience of my life. As soon as I entered the hotel, I was gobsmacked by the horrible smell of the lobby. The carpet looked like it has never been cleaned. An elderly woman was struggling walking down the stairs as they had no lift. Nothing wrong with not having an elevator, but this should be noted prominently on the website in case anyone with physical limitations will know this before booking. I had room number 8. I go into the room and was perplexed that there was no bathroom/toilet/shower. I asked the staff person, (friendly and helpful)… where is the bathroom? She explained for that room, it is across the hall. Talk about a major inconvenience! I went down to the bar/restaurant to ask about any vegan options. This area had the same horrible smell and filthy environment. I knew right then I would do a take-away and eat in my room. There wasn’t anything on the menu I could have which was bizarre because their online menu had several options for vegans. (This was one of the reasons why I booked this place.) Anyhow, I asked the staff person if the chef could prepare something suitable for me. The answer… go to the local Co-Op, buy something vegan and the chef would prepare a vegan meal! I will never stay here again and wouldn’t book a room if they paid me to stay there.

No food available when arrived at 6.30pm after travelling 6 hours. No chef available, bar staff lady said food MIGHT start 8.30pm, owner not in till later. No lift, room on 3rd floor, no-one to assist with luggage. Reception on first floor, no other people there - they must have known how awful it was. Expedia should review keeping this awful hotel on their books. Even local people have since advised not to use it. It was so awful we found alternative accomodation.

This hotel did not deliver its offer. We had: Nobody to serve breakfast in morning (which the Hotel housekeeper agreed.) No cooked at breakfast or any service We also the room had no working TV.When we asked for a cable to enable it from the manager no person came. The towels were also not great and the whole place needs a complete overhaul. We were not the only one. Another couple stayed and had to drive a long way for a hot breakfast. The staff in attendance ( not the hotel management) we met were friendly but we feel let down and want our money back. We will never go there again.

Budget hotel in every sense of the word. I had cobwebs hanging from the lamp in my bathroom, low wattage bulb in my room which made it dim and difficult to read or write. Owner well meaning but hapless. Breakfast day one I ordered at 7:25 and did not receive until over 40 mins later. I was the only person dining, they were not that busy but I guess they had to wait for the hen to lay the eggs. Next day breakfast service was supposed to start at 7:00 AM but they did not open until 7:30 AM with profuse apologies. I watched owner arrive in his car at 7:35 and get out with a bag of groceries. He came in and offered to make a full breakfast but given how long it took the day before I simply refused and had cereal and checked out. You really get the feeling that the owner is trying but way in over his head.

Had a great stay at The Anchor Hotel. Owner James and his wife were very accommodating throughout my stay. The hotel was in a lovely setting, by the river and is steeped in history, being a Court house amongst other things. James the owner is very knowledgeable about this and is happy to talk about it. I will definitely be staying agai abd would highly recommend.

Pub has amazing riverside patios we had a drink then went to check in . The bar was very busy with one girl serving and doing her best . She needed help to check us in as she did not know what room to allocate but could not raise the boss as he was in bed at 4pm once she raised him he did not come down to help her and she finally got us checked in . The room was not in good condition with the walls filled in and painted different shades . The carpet was not that clean . Bedding was clean . At 730am we were woke by the fire alarm and evacuated the building but was no staff on site to advise . After about 10 minutes in the car park a guy arrived who had nipped out to the coop and turned off alarm no apology. Breakfast was surprisingly good .

I really enjoyed my stay here. The location right by the river made it a great day as the sun was shining all day. There was a great selection of drinks in the bar. Pool, darts and skysports available. Loved the little snug/cocktail room with plenty of retro games to play from the windows. The onsite American food van provided us with some delicious food. We had the philli-cheese steak baguette. It was lush! Beds were really comfy. Credit goes to the owners who were very warm and pleasant.

The Anchor Hotel was terrific in every way. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. Jim was a perfect and accommodating host and 600 year old hotel/pub is classic!! The setting on the River with the ancient bridge was spectacular. In total we had a wonderful stay! Craig

Parking at the pub hotel was difficult as there is only a small car park and there are very narrow streets around the area. As there was no sign of a reception, checking in was challenging. The rooms themselves were very good, clean and had tea-making facilities, TV and an en-suite bathroom. The dinner menu was limited, but the breakfast menu was excellent. Be aware, the Friday night disco and karaoke goes on to 3.00am.

Meal ordering was haphazard. I ordered a starter of soup but it did not arrive. I asked for a glass of water to go with my meal; I was asked if I wanted ice, I said yes please but was given a small glass of tepid water with no ice, on one of the hottest days of the year. At breakfast, I took some Bran Flakes but when I got to my table and started to eat them, I found there were nut flakes in them. I am allergic to nuts. There was no warning on the Bran Flake dispenser that nuts had been added. Also, the cooked breakfast consisted of a very small hash brown; one and a half small mushrooms, half a rasher of bacon, an adequate sausage and a fried egg, which was going cold by the time it arrived (also most hotels these days ask if you if want fried, scrambled, poached etc). Finally, although the room and the bathroom in general were clean and tidy, there was huge amounts of disgusting soap scum on the shower hose and on the bottom and behind the concertina shower doors, which cannot have been cleaned for months, if not years.

I really enjoyed my stay here. I was travelling for business so had little time for site seeing but the area was beautiful. Hotel was spotlessly clean and the food was amazing. Clearly run by someone who wants to provide excellent service. If I visit the area again this is the first hotel I will try to book.

The hotel is a little tired but the new Landlord is hopeful of new renovations. The staff are very friendly and a pleasure to talk to. I had a comfortable stay. Great breakfast.

Tried the Anchor for the first time. Evening meal was very poor. Cold chips tiny portion of peas and over done scampi. Breakfast was help yourself with the cooked items under a hot light tray server, but all items where not hot and eggs were like rubber so gave them a miss. Decor was very tired. Won’t go there again.

• No curtains, only white blinds, so the room was very bright from around 4:30 am. • The shower was either freezing cold or scalding hot. • The shower drain was blocked and water remained in the tray for hours. • The towels were very small – I’m 6ft tall and couldn’t wrap one around myself after a shower. • We stayed for two nights but didn’t receive fresh towels on the second day. • There was no fridge in the room and the staff couldn’t provide one. • Breakfast starts at 7 am, so we couldn’t have it before leaving for our hike. • The beds were very soft and spongy, making them uncomfortable to sleep on. • The lobby constantly smelled of fried food and cigarette smoke. It was poor quality, looked like it had been frozen, quickly defrosted and only lightly cooked. It was tough, tasteless and honestly one of the worst steaks I’ve ever had. I started vomiting from at 2 am, and had diarrhoea throughout the night. I can’t say for certain what caused my illness, but the steak was the only freshly cooked meal I’d eaten that day. At check out, we politely raised our concerns with the owner, but instead of showing empathy or apologising, he immediately became defensive and dismissed any possibility that the meal could have been related. We weren’t looking for compensation just concern for a guest and a willingness to investigate.
• No curtains, only white blinds, so the room was very bright from around 4:30 am. • The shower was either freezing cold or scalding hot. • The shower drain was blocked and water remained in the tray for hours. • The towels were very small – I’m 6ft tall and couldn’t wrap one around myself after a shower. • We stayed for two nights but didn’t receive fresh towels on the second day. • There was no fridge in the room and the staff couldn’t provide one. • Breakfast starts at 7 am, so we couldn’t have it before leaving for our hike. • The beds were very soft and spongy, making them uncomfortable to sleep on. • The lobby constantly smelled of fried food and cigarette smoke. The most disappointing part was the restaurant and how our concerns were handled. After completing a charity hike, I ordered a steak at around 8 pm. Clean room but very warm in the extreme heat, shower wasn’t great. Curtains would have been better if blackout to keep out early daylight. Food in bar and breakfast good, plenty of choice

Hotel is run by James and Susan with some additional staff. The check in was quick and friendly, our room clean with view of the river, good shower. We ate twice in the evening and food was good. Breakfast was in the Admiral's room which was well decorated, bright and atmospheric. The building dates back to 1422 and has had several extensions and repurposed from the original court house to an Admiralty rest house to hotel and pub. The external fabric could do with some maintenance and decoration. Would book again.
