If you want to have a relaxing, calming unwinding time, I highly recommend staying at this little “Downton Abbey at Meander”. I had wonderful one night stay at The Inn & Tavern. At the arrival, Daniel, the general manager was making sure I had everything and showed me around the grounds and told about the history of the place. There is a beautiful and easy trail along the river that is worth checking out. I wished I hadn’t skipped the dinner, since the breakfast was delicious. The whole staff was very polite and kind. A+++

Remarkable Revalutionary and Civil War history. The grounds between the Inn and the river need some tender loving care; one small wooden bridge was left out of place; maybe from the last time they mowed and invasive plants such as garlic mustard are starting to move in.

What a great surprise. Found this by browsing for accommodations while passing through the area. It’s a beautiful, historic Inn with excellent breakfast included. A fine dining restaurant is available in the evening. We stayed in one of the 8 cottages surrounding the main house. Property is beautiful with hiking trails and even a historic cemetery. Staff was friendly and accommodated requests. Highly recommend! We will go out of our way to return in the futur.

It's a very old historic property that comes with all related design issues. But it's wonderful to stay here in these surroundings. The beds are comfortable, the balconies are nice to relax on and enjoy the beauty that nature has to offer. The food was excellent! But I have to say that all the staff were wonderful and very, very attentive, even on such a busy weekend that we went. such a relaxing time in a beautiful building, with great food, and wonderstaff. Would definitely recommend.

A one-night getaway that feels like a long weekend in a faraway time. Daniel is a true host in old-world Inn & Tavern style. Our cabin accommodations complete with wood fire in the grate, wonderful walks right out our door through the extensive Meander grounds (paths by the Robinson River) and quiet—so quiet—that we slept well & deeply. The restaurant, a one-minute walk from our door, is excellent. Both the three-course dinner (though it was fine also to order a La carte) and the breakfast are top notch. We recommend the whole experience! (My husband, who is a Civil War scholar, even found things to investigate right on the property!)

Cute and comfortable inn stay on a beautiful plantation property that looks over the Virginia hills. The staff was warm and hospitable for a Christmas Eve day. The property has a manicured trail that we took our dog along that made for a leisurely stroll after our delicious breakfast that is included in the inn stay night costs.

The manager and staff were very nice. Property has great views. Food was good. However, this property needs a major renovation. I believe price is lower than others in area because it needs work. Also, being very pet-friendly appears to have contributed to furniture damage and dog odor in rugs.

Beautiful old Inn. We had a lovely time sitting outside enjoying a bottle of wine and the views. The beds were very comfortable and the entire place was very clean. I will definitely be back! Dinner was also delicious.

I booked a two night stay at this historic Inn. Unfortunately it did not live up to expectations and I had to cut my stay short. The bathroom was in such bad repair and smelled like sewage that I refused to use it, which is why we chose to leave after only one night. The place has great potential and the staff is very sweet, but the place is dilapidated and in serious need of repair especially the bathroom of the Jefferson suite. Please see attached photo this is not what I would expect for a hotel charging almost 300 USD a night.

I loved that we got to stay in a whole colonial, well-appointed, immaculate house by ourselves. I loved the staff, that went out of its way. The grounds are beautiful, as are the accommodations. I didn't like my breakfast, a "sandwich" made from a croissant, some flavorless cheese, a fried egg and overcooked, very salty bacon. No garnishes. Croissant was second-rate. Should have had tomato or greenery. Caused us to cancel our dinner reservation. Other than that, the staff was amazing, as were the grounds and the accommodations.

Cottage smelled horrible, damp and moldy. Spoke to the young lady about it but she basically threw up her arms. We left and went the store to buy a Febreeze defuser. Half of the plugs didn't work so we had to move furniture to get to a working outlet. There was a mouse trap behind the nightstand. The shower floor appeared moldy both inside and out.The property was beautiful but rundown. The young man who served us breakfast was wonderful. Parker engaged everyone and was kind and professional. In fact he was the only person working there who spoke to us the entire time other than the young lady who checked us in. Our last evening there we were watching the sunset, however, there was a great deal of shooting going on somewhere near the property. While I realize there's no control over another property, it did definitely damaged our calm. Overall I could not recommend this place.

Love the historic nature. Room clean and nicely set up. Appreciate the refrigerator and the fireplace. Nice area to walk around. Staff was professional and friendly. Happy to have found this inn!!

Pictures of property are deceiving. Furniture was worn and sparse, not even a chair to sit in to put shoes on. It was quiet and bed was comfortable enough and the AC worked well. Served the purpose to visit family in nearby Culpeper.

Lovely historic property. Sofas need updating as well as some chairs. Bed was very comfortable and linens were excellent. Shower was excellent. Bathroom needs new seat and small table would help beside sink. Overall we would love to return in the fall.

It is fun to be in such a historical property. The people working there are all so nice. Our bed was comfortable and the fireplace was fun. The property could use some renovation as well as the bathroom.

The Inn is a marvelous historic home with beautiful views and grounds. We stayed in the Jefferson room in the main house so I have no idea about the rest of the accommodations. Our room was large with two double beds and a bathroom that was entered from the hall, but there were no other rooms on the second floor so it wasn't a problem. The entire property is in need of significant maintenance, restoration and renovation. I would rate the accommodations a three star. There is a new general manager who I hope will convince the owners that renovating the property will be a good investment because the house is a real national treasure. The menu selections and food preparation were beyond excellent. As far as I was concerned the evening meal was on a par with the Inn At Little Washington. All of the staff that I interacted with were friendly, competent and helpful.

Loved this place except for the strong smell of fireplace ash. Loved that the room had a wood burning fireplace, but the ventilation was bad. The dinner I ordered to take back to my room was wonderful. I will definitely stay again, but maybe try a different room.

What a wonderful weekend we had in the Summer Kitchen at the Inn & Tavern at Meander. You first enter through the white brick columns and make you way up the driveway to the striking home at the top of the knoll that immediately transports you back in time. Our cottage was used as the kitchen for the main house 200 plus years ago and has been transformed to a well appointed spacious living space with modern conveniences and the most comfortable bed that gave us the best night's sleep. Dinner and breakfast were made order and so delicious. We were greeted on arrival by the general manager Daniel who we had the added bonus of speaking with throughout our stay. He is well versed in the incredible history of the home, grounds and surrounding area and shared some wonderful stories with us. The property is a work in progress which we liked. If you are seeking all modern amenities and everything brand new and posh, this is not the place for you but if you are looking for a tranquil escape from the bustle of city life and a respite in the county, you'll love it here as we did. We truly felt like guests in a friends a home and can't wait to return.

Our cottage was used as the kitchen for the main house 200 plus years ago and has been transformed to a well appointed spacious living space with modern conveniences and the most comfortable bed that gave us the best night's sleep. Dinner and breakfast were made order and so delicious. We were greeted on arrival by the general manager Daniel who we had the added bonus of speaking with throughout our stay. He is well versed in the incredible history of the home, grounds and surrounding area and shared some wonderful stories with us. The property is a work in progress which we liked. If you are seeking all modern amenities and everything brand new and posh, this is not the place for you but if you are looking for a tranquil escape from the bustle of city life and a respite in the county, you'll love it here as we did. We truly felt like guests in a friends a home and can't wait to return.

Charming Inn with a ton of history. Books in the room detailing background of the estate are definitely worth reading. Wonderful breakfast cooked to order. We stayed in the Groom cottage and like all the accommodations it was fascinating. Staff was unable to get the fireplace to work and they were kind enough to give us a discount for our trouble

If you enjoy history, you will love staying on this wonderful historic estate. We particularly enjoyed sitting on the patio and looking out at the view with the mountains, the excellent breakfast, the friendly staff, and the charming cottage room with a real antique feel in spite of the necessary bathroom addition and very comfortable bed.

Everything was really to my liking, and we very much enjoyed the beautiful Summer Kitchen room for our stay. The dining room waitress, and it was not a very busy dining room, was very single task oriented and not alert to customer needs. For example, she brought out coffee in a pot to pour for another table but did not look over to ours to see if we would like coffee. She could use some pointers on how to wait tables. There were only four of us in the dining room, so from an old waiter and bartender, she coulld have read the room better.

I loved that we got to stay in a whole colonial, well-appointed, immaculate house by ourselves. I loved the staff, that went out of its way. The grounds are beautiful, as are the accommodations. I didn't like my breakfast, a "sandwich" made from a croissant, some flavorless cheese, a fried egg and overcooked, very salty bacon. No garnishes. Croissant was second-rate. Should have had tomato or greenery. Caused us to cancel our dinner reservation. Other than that, the staff was amazing, as were the grounds and the accommodations.

It is so cute. We stayed in the Rapidan. It was lovely but the bathroom could use some updating. The exterior needs help which is sad because it is both historical and charming. Hopefully they will get an investor to help and make it into a wedding venue to bring in additional money. The staff is beyond helpful and nice. We would stay there again.

We loved our short stay at the Inn and Tavern at Meander! The grounds are peaceful and beautiful and the Washington Cottage was very cute and nicely decorated. The breakfast served at the dining room in the main house was excellent with several selections to choose from. The staff were warm, friendly, and very helpful. We'd definitely consider coming back again in the future.

Stayed in the groom's cottage. Met w/2 live wasps in our bathroom on check-in. Requested help from guest services. No response. In the morning there were 4 more live wasps in our cottage. Talked w/GMs at breakfast to let them know that wasps were getting in. We requested help again but were met with indifference. After 3 more hours of inaction and 4 more live wasps in the cottage, we had to press the GMs a 3rd time. They finally agreed to move us to another cottage but were unable to tell us when it would be available. In addition they never offered to assist us with moving our things. The overall attitude of the GM's was terrible. They were argumentative instead of apologetic. There was no communication unless we initiated it; and, even then, they would not respond or they would be frustratingly vague. We were made to feel entirely unwelcome. The experience was so uncomfortable that we chose not to stay for the second night despite not being offered a refund. Three years ago we stayed at Meander and had a lovely time. Apparently, these GM's are new (they said they had just taken over 2 weeks prior). Beware, the current service is extremely poor and the property has fallen into disrepair. Sadly, we will not be returning.

Our cabin accommodations complete with wood fire in the grate, wonderful walks right out our door through the extensive Meander grounds (paths by the Robinson River) and quiet—so quiet—that we slept well & deeply. The restaurant, a one-minute walk from our door, is excellent. Both the three-course dinner (though it was fine also to order a La carte) and the breakfast are top notch. A lovely getaway at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Very relaxing and enjoyable - the staff was beyond accommodating and friendly as well. Dinner at the restaurant was equally as enjoyable. The hostess and Chef made it a wonderful experience and meal. A quiet getaway. We’ll go back.

The manager and staff were very nice. Property has great views. Food was good. However, this property needs a major renovation. I believe price is lower than others in area because it needs work. Also, being very pet-friendly appears to have contributed to furniture damage and dog odor in rugs.

Pictures of property are deceiving. Furniture was worn and sparse, not even a chair to sit in to put shoes on. It was quiet and bed was comfortable enough and the AC worked well. Served the purpose to visit family in nearby Culpeper.

This property is a ways from the main roads, but it is a very quaint and relaxing place. If you want to learn about history and enjoy nature this is the place to come. It’s not a Hilton, so don’t expect that kind of amenities. The host/receptionist, Dan, is super helpful and knowledgeable.

I love the history behind this property. It's very quiet and peaceful, due to its setting on a beautiful 80 plus acres and its distance from the main road. Staff was very friendly and enjoyable to be around. The breakfast in the morning was very good and set the tone for the rest of the day. Only a few negatives, and both small. 1) every time we got toast, it was always hard, dry and cold. 2) In our room, only had one very small waste basket. I think of one thing that could elevate the hospitality experience, since they have a kitchen available, is to have a little cheese and cracker spread with some local wines. This would give the guests an opportunity to mingle and get to know one another. I would not hesitate coming back here, and enjoyed our stay.

Its a great quiet and serene place to escape to, less than 2 hours from DC. It happened to be dog friendly which was perfect for our needs. Many wineries and restaurants nearby. Onsite dining was excellent for dinner and breakfast.

This property dates back to Thomas Jefferson era. The staff is awesome and the rooms are well preserved. We stayed in the Summer Kitchen and absolutely Loved it!! I can't wait to come back. The chef was spot on and the food was Amazing!!

Our stay at Meander was magical! There was an issue with the cottage we had originally booked, but were seamlessly transferred to a different room. Learning about the history of the home from Daniel was a delight. Dinner and breakfast at the on property restaurant were both so incredibly delicious!

The Inn is a marvelous historic home with beautiful views and grounds. We stayed in the Jefferson room in the main house so I have no idea about the rest of the accommodations. Our room was large with two double beds and a bathroom that was entered from the hall, but there were no other rooms on the second floor so it wasn't a problem. The entire property is in need of significant maintenance, restoration and renovation. I would rate the accommodations a three star. There is a new general manager who I hope will convince the owners that renovating the property will be a good investment because the house is a real national treasure. The menu selections and food preparation were beyond excellent. As far as I was concerned the evening meal was on a par with the Inn At Little Washington. All of the staff that I interacted with were friendly, competent and helpful.

Dinner was a bit expensive but worth it. Breakfast was nice but my wife's eggs tasted more like salt than eggs. They re-made them and they were much better. Server was very polite but we had to ask for things a couple of times. I think he was new and still learning but very pleasant and helpful. We would stay here again.

We were there in Feb 2026 as a romantic Valentines getaway. The grounds are in desperate need of repair and upgrades. The stone walkway was very dangerous with raised and missing stones. The room was dark and dingy. We needed to open the windows because it was hot in our room. The window seals were full of dirt and dead bugs. We ended up checking out a day early, we just couldn't stay another night. At check out we were told the inn was starting a renovation plan in March as they were away of these issues.

The Inn and Tavern at Meander was certainly not lacking in charm and we thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful dinner and breakfast and the kind people working there (all 3 of them) but we stayed in a room that was like a furnace and when we asked to have the heat better controlled, we were assured it would be taken care of and it wasn’t and a 2 day stay was quite uncomfortable and resulted in a lack of sleep which interfered with our next day plans. Add to that a sink that was constantly running in the bathroom and would tilt forward if you put any pressure on it as well as broken glass in window panes and outdated uncomfortable furniture and our weekend stay in this historic inn could have been much improved. The kicker was when the door knob to our room came off in my hand. While we know they were trying to keep to the historic aesthetic of the inn, modern conveniences such as a tv would have been welcomed especially since we were trying to keep up with the Olympics. Fortunately, we had brought an IPad. It seemed like the staff was trying very hard to be accommodating and were very gracious but they were severely short staffed for a holiday weekend although we were comped for our dinner and had our stay discounted. Sad because this place has a ton of potential!
While we would have expected a stay in an inn from the 1700’s to be rustic we would still have expected furnishings and some modern amenities to be available in good working order. I stayed in the Summer Kitchen and it was so cozy and comfy, just what i was looking for. Only issue was that the jets in the bathtub didn't work, and when I drained the tub, water came up in the shower. But it wasn't a big deal. It was spacious, and quiet and full of antique treasures. Very cool.
