Decent hotel. Clean rooms. Easy access to the beach and pools. Family friendly. Dining options available on the property. Main attraction - grotto pool and swim up bar. Overall good accessibility but somewhat lacking in terms of “resort amenities” for the price especially when compared to other hotels.

I have been going to this location for almost 30 years, since it was the Ramada Plaza Beach Resort. It is always excellent. Every staff member we encountered was top notch. The location can’t be beat. You walk to the back of the property and you are on the beach. Depending on which room you select, you can walk out of your room and be on the beach or in the pool. Everything you need is right here. Destin is just a few miles away, across the bay bridge. I do have one complaint. The water in the grotto pool was so cold, that we couldn’t swim in it. We tried, and we just couldn’t stay in the cold water. Some people were swimming, so apparently it didn’t bother them. I heard other people leaving the grotto pool and going to the other smaller pool because the water was so cold. Other than that, I have no complaints and will continue to stay here.

This place has got overcrowded with the day use people and people from the neighboring properties coming to use the pools. There are more bars than eating places now. Way too many drunk people even big groups of them blocking the parking lot. Not so family friendly anymore.

Parking was horrible I didn’t like that at all and extra fees as well that weren’t mentioned till checkout other than that it was a nice stay

My family was booked at this hotel for 5 days. The door to the room we stayed at was not functioning. The wristbands that were given never worked. The hotel staff actually changed the door knob system four times!! We would leave and return to our room and not be able to get inside.Each time we returned to our room after the door knob was replaced we would have to wait for someone to come and reset or replace the door. Apparently this is a common theme and happens quite frequently!! I asked to speak to a manager and none was available that day ( on a Saturday). The hotel was overbooked so changing rooms was not an option. There was only one pool available and was extremely crowded because the main adult pool was drained. A crew was sandblasting and resurfacing the pool. The chemical smell was awful and very loud. The main pool was next to a kiddie pool while the maintenance was being done. It was so unsafe!! There was just caution tape around the pool and not barricaded as little children were running around. We actually ended up checking out 2 days early because of our concerns. The staff that worked were friendly and did their best under the circumstances. This certainly is not a 4 star hotel. I am in the process of trying to get a refund through expedia since it was paid up front as a package deal.

You’re supposed to use the bracelets to access certain areas, but a lot of the doors that were supposed to be locked just weren’t. It felt like anyone could walk in without needing a bracelet, which didn’t feel super secure. Other than that, it was a pretty good stay!

Beachfront location was great. Quiet location with a few dinner options close by, but Destin boardwalk is only about 15 minutes away for even more options. On-site restaurant was great for breakfast. You can rent an umbrella/chairs or bring your own. Very pretty beach area in front of hotel. Very nice pools and amenities too.

The pools were excellent, and the bar in the grotto pool was a huge plus. However, the rooms on the second floor do not have elevators. I assumed that for around $270/night + daily resort fee, you would at least have elevators. Either way, we had a good time at the hotel.

My husband and I had a fantastic weekend! Loved the waterfall pool, it was cold but refreshing, the heated pool, hot tub and fantastic beach! The room itself was nice. The frills were outside! Taking a walk through the resort was nice gardens and small soothing waterfalls! They had several bars, restaurant, food truck and the food was pretty good too!

The room was very basic and not in good shape. the front door didn't close unless you pushed your shoulder into it. The sink drain had a leak that dripped down onto all the towels and wash cloths which were all soaked when we arrived. the shower head was a large square shower head but water came out of less than 50% of the holes due to terrible water pressure and it being incredibly dirty. upon checking in they told us that the breakfast buffet was around the corner in the morning, so first morning there we went and it was a standard nothing fancy continental breakfast. This would not have been an issue until they charged us 85$ to eat it. this was only due to the fact they decided to not charge us for one of my kids. 2 adults and 1 kid price was 85$. the meal had all the normal cheap bacon, powdered eggs, yogurt, and granola. We were very unhappy about the entire stay at this "resort" and will never recommend this to anyone.

We checked in our room. Immediate motel vibes in the sunrise part of the hotel. Saw a huge roach. Got moved to a different part of the hotel and it was better and cleaner. The outside and lobby is so nice, but the hotel itself is so outdated.

The place itself was great! Loved the pools dining and location. The rooms were outdated. You could see the black mold coming through the paint at the top around bathroom/shower area. It’s was clean and loved the maid service daily. Just could use some updates in the room.

We booked their standard double room and upon arrival we were sent to a section of their resort that looked like a rundown roadside motel. The appearance of the building was nothing like what was sold on the website as a "resort". In the room, we found mouse poop on the floor next to the bathroom sink and our bedding was dirty and stained. When we addressed our concerns with the front desk they didn't apologize or offer to help with the dirty room situation. We left the resort and found another hotel, but not before having to pay more money for their resort fee and parking. I've requested a refund, but the resort has yet to respond on our refund request. Do not recommend this resort to anyone, buyer beware.

Beach front property was nice. Breakfast was not included like it first stated when I booked, which was one of the only reasons we booked this property instead of a condo. Breakfast was a continental Buffet. price was not advertised. Was charged $24.95 for the buffet in which was biscuits, eggs, cereals, oatmeal’s. As you would get even at the cheapest hotels. Tv service was constantly on and out. The batteries was dead in the remote. There was mold on our pillow case. Toilet paper roll was half used & folded up. Pool chairs was limited and none were available except for one day that we went SUPER late. Air conditioner in pool bathroom was pouring onto towels stacked up in the floor. One pool was closed which was not listed & caused over crowding. This was our second visit, but our last!

It’s a very good place overall. The staff is extremely kind, and the customer service is excellent. The hotel offers good amenities and is relatively comfortable, though it can be a bit noisy due to limited soundproofing. It’s not particularly eco-friendly, as towels were replaced daily despite leaving them in the correct place for reuse. Although the hotel is somewhat old, the facilities and furniture are very well maintained over time and kept spotlessly clean.

Terrible Experience – Do Not Recommend My stay at The Island Resort in Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Florida was a horrible experience from start to finish. I would never stay here again and absolutely do not recommend this property. First off, the cleanliness was unacceptable. The shower floor had visible dirt, grime, and what appeared to be mold buildup. The showerhead was covered in rust spots, and the white towels had leftover makeup stains — clearly not properly cleaned. The most frustrating part of the stay was getting in and out of our room. The key system operates using a wristband, which never worked. Every single time we needed to enter the room, we had to either call the front desk or hunt down a maintenance worker outside to open the door for us. In the Florida heat and humidity, this became incredibly annoying and exhausting. Despite all these issues, nothing was offered to accommodate or compensate us for the inconvenience. 0/10 — would not recommend. Save your time, money, and sanity and book elsewhere.

The location is its biggest attraction. Being right on the beach and having several restaurants either onsite or within a very short walk is a plus. I would say overall the property is generally kind of middle of the road. It isn’t a dump but it isn’t overly impressive either. It was a little noisy in the room and anything or anyone in the hall could be easily heard. The fact that our room overlooked the beach also meant that the live nightly entertainment at the beachfront bar was easily heard from inside our room. Honestly though, after about 10 p.m. it was perfectly quiet for sleeping. I found Okaloosa Island generally more laid back and quiet compared to Destin yet Destin is an easy five miles away if you want more to do or see.

Beach front units were nice but back units were low quality, you can hear neighbors and rooms were older and didn’t smell nice, pictures in the posting show only the beachfront units and obscure the fact there are other older not so nice units in the back and sides of the property.

The pools were excellent, and the bar in the grotto pool was a huge plus. However, the rooms on the second floor do not have elevators. I assumed that for around $270/night + daily resort fee, you would at least have elevators. Either way, we had a good time at the hotel.

Overall was a great experience but some things did occur which made the trip less than excellent. Upon checking in the front desk woman was laughing the entire check in. At one point she had to hide behind the computer because she was laughing while asking questions and checking us in. This didn’t make sense to me and felt rude. When asking questions she responded in a sighing way that made it seem like my questions were stupid or not worth her time. The room itself was nice but there was a very strong smell. Like an older male cologne that did not leave the room for our entire 5 day trip. I even tried to lysol it out. You also cannot control your AC to match your comfort level. It was fine during the day but at night it would kick on for very long period of time and be freezing and then later on hot.You can hear everything around you while in the room so keep that in mind if you’re a light sleeper or have kids. This was not an issue for us until the last night, a monday, where we had to catch a flight at 5 am the next day. The artist was suppose to play until 9pm but passed their time by nearly and hour and was very loud. When i called the FD they did not seem to care but after a longer convo they agreed to send security to tell them to turn it down. This never happened. Lastly your paying a resort fee daily but there is nothing exclusive to this place. Anyone can access the beach or pool. Good location and well maintained. But overpriced for what your getting.

We got there a Thursday evening , front desk staff was super rude . I bought the breakfast buffet package for each guest with me (5) when I arrived they said that Expedia doesn’t tell you that the buffet is only for “2 people” only , mind you when purchasing in the Expedia app it literally asks if you want to add the buffet for EACH guest , I explained that to the front desk and gave me a really hard time about it , they ended up just adding it as a “courtesy” . Also , my first two nights our AC kept malfunctioning , I called guest services three times and no one went to go look at it . I probably wouldn’t go back here . Place is over-hyped , too expensive, not worth it .

Our stay at the island resort was very comfortable. The other guests were friendly and the staff was great especially Laura, Michelle, and Lucy. The only complaint is that housekeeping never came and the towels were stained slightly. The pool was gorgeous and the grotto bar was fun. We had a very good stay. Thank you to the restaurant staff and bar staff for being so kind!

We had a pool view room. The Grotto Pool, that we were facing is beautiful. Being on the 5th floor, we could also see the side of the bay. The place was exceptionally clean and the staff was first class.

Our recent stay at this resort was unfortunately filled with avoidable frustrations. From the moment we arrived, we had serious issues with our room lock — we were unable to get into our room multiple times over the first two days and had to call maintenance repeatedly. The lock had to be replaced twice during our stay, and we ended up being moved to a different room on day 3 (our last full day), which was an inconvenience we didn’t expect while on vacation. The front desk manager assured us the resort fees would be waived due to the inconvenience, but those charges still appeared on our bill. To make matters worse, we weren’t provided a detailed invoice at checkout, nor were we asked to confirm or approve a payment method — they simply charged the card on file without discussion. We emailed to get a copy of the detailed invoice once we arrived home. The breakfast buffet was another disappointment. Despite the price, it offered only a few hot items and mostly standard continental fare — the kind many hotels provide complimentary. On the positive side, the pools were nice, and the quick beach access was appreciated. A special mention goes to Danny from maintenance — he was friendly, helpful, and genuinely apologetic about the issues we faced. We appreciated his efforts, even if the overall experience fell far short. But overall, these perks did not make up for the frustrations. Given the experience, we would not recommend this resort and will not be returning.

We have enjoyed this property on multiple occasions. It is an older property, however staff do a great job and the property is clean. It is right on the beach. There are tons of dining options and bars on property. The pools are great also. During the summer they have activities for the kids regularly. The boardwalk, pier, and Gulfarium are all in walking distance. Boat and jet ski rentals are conveniently across the street. There is also a pedestrian crosswalk in the area.This is our favorite beachfront hotel in the Destin/Fort Walton area.

I have been going to this location for almost 30 years, since it was the Ramada Plaza Beach Resort. It is always excellent. Every staff member we encountered was top notch. The location can’t be beat. You walk to the back of the property and you are on the beach. Depending on which room you select, you can walk out of your room and be on the beach or in the pool. Everything you need is right here. Destin is just a few miles away, across the bay bridge. I do have one complaint. The water in the grotto pool was so cold, that we couldn’t swim in it. We tried, and we just couldn’t stay in the cold water. Some people were swimming, so apparently it didn’t bother them. I heard other people leaving the grotto pool and going to the other smaller pool because the water was so cold. Other than that, I have no complaints and will continue to stay here.

Beachfront location was great. Quiet location with a few dinner options close by, but Destin boardwalk is only about 15 minutes away for even more options. On-site restaurant was great for breakfast. You can rent an umbrella/chairs or bring your own. Very pretty beach area in front of hotel. Very nice pools and amenities too.

We felt safe and comfortable the entire stay, and the convenience to the beach and the Boardwalk was great. Our mistake was to book a pool-view room, as it's very noisy with all the families enjoying the beautiful pools and music. Next time, beach view.

Great location for the price. Rooms NEED soundproofing as we could hear our neighbor snore and talk and use the bathroom as if they were in our room. Room itself was pretty good with little wear and tear. Breakfast buffet was good but overpriced if we had not included it with our room.

Wonderful vacation and hotel! Room was clean and comfortable. Staff very friendly, so much to do! Wish there was coffee in the lobby as the room coffee was nasty and the coffee shop doesn’t open until 8am. The pools were awesome and it was super convenient to walk down to the beach and get chair and umbrella rentals. Cocktails are expensive so budget for that

Absolutely loved all the planned activities through out the day. The kids got to enjoy face painting, fire show, bubble party, DJ, balloon animals & game between 11am - 10pm on site. Convenient - able to order a whole pizza at the bar at 10pm. Downfall - the front desk didn’t tell us we had breakfast included in our reservation until I asked so ask before you pay! Dislike - unexpected fees when we got here. They charge parking fee & parking fee tax that is not mentioned when booking.

The pools were ok, the one with the waterfalls was always dirty. We stayed in room 4008 and it was clean. The air conditioner was very loud and not working well, room stayed around 74 degrees, which for us is too warm to sleep. The walls are very thin, we could everytime someone got ice, elevators opened and anything going on at the pool. There’s not much to do in this area, we flew in and did not rent a car, so you were kinda stuck there.

The pictures of the property show you what this place looked like maybe 10 years ago. Room was shabby, the sheets had a weird smell, and water pressure wasn’t great. When we arrived, our room wasn’t ready, which was ok because we were early. However, at 4 it still wasn’t ready. It was after 5 that we finally got the call that it was finally ready. Pools were nice, but showing their age for sure. Lastly, breakfast. It was a well done buffet and was included with our stay. However, when I went to check out, there was a $79 charge for 2 breakfasts! I handed the paper back and said it was supposed to be free. And within a few minutes, they corrected it….which was nice. Dining choices were limited. More variety is needed, especially healthy. Too much junk food.. Seaweed on beach should have been cleaned daily. Chairs and umbrellas are priced too high. Bar on beach too small. But what was most annoying was the tv and chromecast. One night and one night only I was able to connect our devices to the tv. I had 4 of them. The choices other than chromecast very limited. The hill at beach edge should have been smoothed out with tractor. Bathroom dangerous. Nothing to hold on to. Vent terrible. No shelves. Then there is the a/c. Too cold. Hard to understand how it works. Apparently it comes on when there is movement in the room. But with no movement like sleeping it did not come on thus the room was either too hot or cold in the morning. I am still confused about it. All I know is that however it works it was annoying for the entire trip. My wife and I did not dislike the trip but it was not one of our better choices. We will not be coming back.
Dining choices were limited. More variety is needed, especially healthy. Too much junk food.. Seaweed on beach should have been cleaned daily. Chairs and umbrellas are priced too high. Bar on beach too small. But what was most annoying was the tv and chromecast. One night and one night only I was able to connect our devices to the tv. I had 4 of them. The choices other than chromecast very limited. The hill at beach edge should have been smoothed out with tractor. Bathroom dangerous. Nothing to hold on to. Vent terrible. No shelves. Then there is the a/c. Too cold. Hard to understand how it works. Apparently it comes on when there is movement in the room. But with no movement like sleeping it did not come on thus the room was either too hot or cold in the morning. I am still confused about it. All I know is that however it works it was annoying for the entire trip. My wife and I did not dislike the trip but it was not one of our better choices. We will not be coming back.

My husband and I had a fantastic weekend! Loved the waterfall pool, it was cold but refreshing, the heated pool, hot tub and fantastic beach! The room itself was nice. The frills were outside! Taking a walk through the resort was nice gardens and small soothing waterfalls! They had several bars, restaurant, food truck and the food was pretty good too!

Rooms needed detailed upkeep. Staff was great. Facility was nice and convenient access to the beach is a plus. Bar cocktails are subpar and drastically overpriced for the quality. Price would have made sense if they were made well with semi decent ingredients.

This is our second stay. The first was much better than this one for sure. First let me say that the room was exceptionally clean and the view of the beach was fantastic from our room/balcony. The other amenities, (pools, restaurants, bars, etc.) were great. However the smoking (cigarettes, vaping, marijuana, etc.) was very annoying especially since this is suppose to be a 100% smoke free facility. Trash cans around the property were not emptied often enough leading to overflow of the containers. The biggest issue I had with the stay started at check in. The check in person told us that our room had not been assigned and that they had oversold my reservation type. Keep in mind I made the reservation more than a month in advance. He stated that because we were a three night stay he would bump one of the one night stays so we could have a room that met our reservation type. It is not like we checked in late either. We arrived 1 hour and 45 minutes after check in started on a Thursday, well in advance of the weekend crowd. If this is what they do then do not tell the customer, just do it. Felt like we were a bother rather than weekend guest. The beach access was also very disappointing as the entire property beach front was covered by rental chairs and umbrellas that were not included in the package. We had to sit behind them unless we wanted to pay an additional $45.00 per day to sit with an unobstructed view of the water.

It’s always a great stay at The Island. Staff are friendly and the rooms are clean. The only downside is that the refrigerators are small and suck at cooling or keeping beverages cool.

The A/C was extremely loud and would wake us up every time it would turn on and off and the bed was extremely hard. The staff could use some training on customer friendliness. We paid almost $400 for one night and we went during the off season. We had a gulf view and that was beautiful!! Will not stay here again

Cleaning staff was great, all staff were great. The amenities were great but the halls, rooms, elevators all look dirty and in bad need of a renovation. It looks like more staff are needed as the staff on hand were working constantly. Also the grounds need more cleaning as we saw trash on the premises that was never picked up in the five days we were there. This place looks like a party hotel that needs an upscale.
