The only place we stay in Palo Alto! Perfect location, easy (free) parking curbside and walkable to restaurants, cocktails/wine bars, shopping, and historic Stanford Theater! Front desk staff is always friendly and helpful. Quiet and comfortable!

The old building is certainly historical looking and pleasant. The neighborhood is nice with several restaurants you can walk to. However, no modern amenities are to be had. The elevator felt like it could break down, the outer second door on it could injure someone as it snaps closed and there is no coffee machine or microwave in the room. A small carafe of coffee was available in the lobby, but promptly taken away at 9 AM. The walls are thin and we heard noise from the room above us till 1 AM. The sunlight streamed in at 7 AM through the old wooden shutters. No blackout shades. The old style radiator made the room so stuffy. We had to leave the fan on all night. Bed was uncomfortable and the pillows were either too flat and soft or too hard and high. Only street parking available and you have to move your car every two hours 8 to 5. We cannot recommend this hotel, although the staff are helpful and friendly,

Parking is a huge hassle. Also there is no proper heat in the rooms. Must wait for radiator to come on. This isn’t rural Maine … come on folks each room needs a thermostat and the ability to set temp.

So, if you’re looking for an authentic 1925 experience of no amenities and trying to sleep in a puddle of sweat with the window open and ceiling fan whirring, this is for you. It was not for us. We left after the first night.

Old world charm in the heart of downtown. If you like a hotel with an interesting history that takes you back to the 1920’s and 30’s, Stay here. Ride the very old (but not scary) elevator or take the stairs that don’t creak ( but you wish they did.)

I liked the quaint look of the cardinal. I was not aware that there was no AC. opening the window was necessary but there should’ve been a screen. Some small insects were found in my room, they looked like fleas.

Charming vintage gem in Palo Alto. Our room was clean with a private bathroom. The staff was friendly and helpful. The location can’t be beat with restaurants, boutiques, coffee shops and a short walk to Stanford University. Cardinal Hotel has character, history and a central location. We enjoyed our stay.

The front desk staff was very nice and the hotel is in a great location. However, it was very noisy. I could literally hear every step the person in the room above us took as well as his conversation verbatim. Lastly, there is no air conditioning which could have been miserable if it was warmer.

No A/C when it was 100 degrees in Palo Alto. Only ceiling fans. It’s an old school hotel, which I like, but they should upgrade to A/C. Also, if they put you on the side of the alley, you’ll be greeted with the constant sounds of bottles and trash being emptied. You’ll need earplugs. Location is great.

The noises around this hotel are unbearable. Because the windows are old and thin every little noise from the street come into your room. I had a 05.30AM wake up call from someone operating saw machine outside the hotel. The slamming litter bins are outside one side of the hotel and there is a ton of noise around the hotel in general. I only booked this because Sheraton PA was full. Never going back.

I stayed at the excellent Cardinal Hotel in Palo Alto for 2 nights for a business trip and had a wonderful, cozy stay at this unique and historic gem. I make it a point to seek out old hotels that are full of character, so this was the perfect place for me. Some of the rooms utilize a shared toilet and shower in the hall. While the whole hotel is a deal compared to surrounding options, the rooms utilizing the shared facilities are very affordable. I peeked my head in the toilet/shower and they were immaculate! They provide a robe and slippers in the room, so if you choose a room with a shared bath, you're covered, quite literally. I booked a room that had its own bathroom, and my room was cozy and clean with a comfortable bed. The walk-in shower in my room looked brand new and had great heat and pressure. The provided shampoo, conditioner, and body wash smelled and felt luxurious. There is no AC at this hotel, but the window opened, which was such a treat on a delightfully cool fall night. I adore a fresh breeze, so I was happy. The sounds of the city floated in, and I even enjoyed a multimedia art installation projected on a nearby building one evening—built-in entertainment for the win. By 1030, it was quiet, however, and I slept soundly until the morning. If you're a noise-sensitive person, you might want a more modern option, but I had a blast.

The Cardinal is a quaint little boutique hotel. The guest rooms have been nicely remodeled. The rooms are small and the bathrooms are VERY small. The hotel is very conveniently located to shopping and restaurants.

Location is excellent and old world charm is lovely. Service was average and it didn\'t appear that there was much effort to improve the customer experience. One thermos of coffee offered in the lobby . Always empty by 8 am and cold. Tv channels very limited. Seems like the attitude is "we have a great location, so don\'t have to provide service"

The staff went above and beyond to accommodate our special requests. The location was fantastic. We requested a quiet room and it fit the bill. The atmosphere was charming. Old school feel but the rooms were updated. Highly recommend.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Cardinal Hotel. We came up for a show at the Frost Amphitheater and it's an easy walk to there. The hotel is chocked full of charm. It's an older hotel with classic design elements. Our room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The Cardinal Hotel is within walking distance of lots of restaurants, bars, and higher-end shopping. It is located less than a mile from the Palo Alto Caltrain station .. so a trip up the peninsula to San Francisco would be an easy day-trip. If you're visiting Stanford, it's about a mile to the campus entrance. Staff was very nice .. we'll stay there again if coming to Palo Alto.

We love this hotel but be prepared for the street noise - you may need earplugs for the 4:00 AM garbage trucks on Monday morning and for the smaller rooms and bathrooms of an old downtown hotel. That said - the location is incredibly convenient, staff is outstanding, period decor and architecture is lovely, and it is just ten minutes from the Stanford medical center.

The noises around this hotel are unbearable. Because the windows are old and thin every little noise from the street come into your room. I had a 05.30AM wake up call from someone operating saw machine outside the hotel. The slamming litter bins are outside one side of the hotel and there is a ton of noise around the hotel in general. I only booked this because Sheraton PA was full. Never going back.

Great location, very walkable and 1.6 miles to center of Stanford campus. Very clean rooms! And comfortable beds. No air-conditioning, however, electric fans worked well.

Location is excellent and old world charm is lovely. Service was average and it didn\'t appear that there was much effort to improve the customer experience. One thermos of coffee offered in the lobby . Always empty by 8 am and cold. Tv channels very limited. Seems like the attitude is "we have a great location, so don\'t have to provide service"

I loved staying at the Cardinal hotel. It was the perfect location to access Stanford, my venue at the Crown Plaza, and access to outdoor dining from breakfast through dinner. The hotel is essentially located in the heart of Palo Alto, where I felt safe and comfortable walking around by myself. I highly recommend Recommend it and woukd stay there again with my family.

We enjoyed an outstanding experience at the Cardinal Hotel. Location, area and proximity to Stanford Stadium were perfect. The staff was kind and attentive. The breakfast at Maxine’s Bistro was excellent.

A very special place with history! We really loved it. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud, very comfortable. Also the Christmas decoration in the hotel lobby was fabulous. A nice place to drink complimentary tee or coffee and enjoy the ambience.

The Cardinal Hotel is the perfect location in Palo Alto. Within walking distance of anything you might need (e.g. restaurants, bars, Stanford campus, etc). The hotel was very clean and had the old California 1950s/60s vibe. The original elevator was a plus and such a throwback, but fully functioning and added to the charm. Staff was very helpful and friendly. My only takeaway was I wish there was air conditioning. A ceiling fan just isn’t enough for me, but I do understand with the age of the building and keeping the character it’s not always possible to have installed. I highly recommend this hotel and would absolutely stay there again!

Everything was great. The place is not new, so there are some things that come with age, but it was as clean as it could hope to be. Everyone we interacted with was very nice…which was just the receptionist when we checked in and when we checked out. Would stay there again. I’d advise anyone thinking about staying there to make sure they get a room with the shower and bathroom in the room. I didn’t know it could be any other way, but I think I would have been upset if I didn’t know before hand.

The Bluetooth radio was very low quality sound. My iPhone was louder than the volume setting on the Bluetooth speaker in the room. No AC but windows open. Nice and dark in bedroom. Was bummed breakfast didn’t come with the room since booked on hotels.com
