The Gin Hotel, an Ascend Collection Hotel

This is a super cute boutique hotel. I love the vibe here—it was exactly what we were looking for! The old elevator was delightful. The staff is fantastic, providing excellent recommendations for dining. Parking is a bit odd but understandable due to the location.

Parking lot was behind the hotel, but there was only one entrance at the front of the building. Access was through a poorly lit alleyway, which was concerning at night as a woman traveling alone. Other than that, I greatly enjoyed my stay and would definitely come back.

It's old, which we expected. However, the condition is not a boutique hotel condition. Rather, it's like a motel in a historic building and the breakfast included is worse than what a two and half star hotel can offer. One elevator doesn't work. If your room is close to where the bar/restaurant is, good luck. For the price they charge, it's not worth it.

The Gin Hotel was a convenient in-town selection. It was clean and the bathroom has been renovated with a wonderful shower and decor. The Juniper lounge is on the second floor and has a bar and serves food. We enjoyed our stay and when we return to Lexington we will stay at the Gin again - 😀

The rooms are large with 16 foot ceilings and very nice trim and finishes. Our room was just outside the Jupiter Lounge where we had an exceptional fine dining experience. I am very pleased with this hotel but would suggest an improved breakfast offering.

This hotel is a GEM! We loved the historic downtown area of Lexington and have been here several times but not stayed downtown. The room was perfect size and the staff was so helpful. The Juniper Lounge has a great full bar and the food is yummy! We will stay here again! Kudos to the owners for taking on the remodel of this beautiful building.

Terrific stay at The Gin Hotel! Located in Lexington, VA, the hotel is close to both Washington & Lee and the Virginia Military Institute. The property is very charming with a lot of character. Staff was very welcoming, engaging and helpful. The room was clean and well tended. They offer a free continental breakfast, which is very basic, but was fine for our needs as we are not big breakfast eaters. The property is centrally located in the town and well situated for a walk about this historic town. I was particularly appreciative of the free parking, which was located directly behind the hotel and very convenient. All in all a brief, but great stay at The Gin!

Beautiful town, comfortable bed (pillows suck) and the room is very clean. Awesome rain head shower with lots of hot water. Staff was super nice and check in went smoothly. Breakfast is the usual but they had fresh yogurt and fruit which was nice. It’s a little worn looking in spots and the walls are pretty thin but overall will stay again when traveling through.

this place was immaculate. the room was beautiful. we stayed on the 4th floor overlooking downtown. we woke to snow falling, you could see all around. the area was just wonderful. walking distance to many great eateries, hobby shops, and coffee. parking was tight but we found a spot. breakfast was minimal, but we enjoyed it. the hotel had a very classic feel with modern updates. bathroom was great. big shower. everything was clean. the staff were more than helpful. would definitely stay agian.

Historic hotel in the center of Lexington with character. Rooms were clean and bed comfortable. Room was definitely lacking electrical receptacles and no mini fridge but otherwise quite nice. Lots of dining options nearby.

Beautiful historical lobby including 2 telephone booths. The grab and go breakfast area had good coffee and a variety of options for a quick bite. A number of restaurants and bakeries are minutes away in this easily walkable town. Very clean and comfortable room.

Great location but the hotel itself was a huge disappointment. It is very shabby with stained carpets, linens and chipped furniture. Lack of outlets near the bed for cpap machine and other device chargers was a challenge. Uncomfortable shower situation with just a small glass wall leaving you cold. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel.

This was our second stay. First stay i was blinded by its charm..The Hotel is charming but needs a GOOD cleaning. Probably will pick a different place next time.

Hotel felt a little tired. Stains in hall carpet kind of thing. Breakfast was as minimal as I have seen at a hotel. Good location. Staff was nice. Room was very small for two beds.

Bed linens nice, bed clean and comfy. Carpet in room filthy, smelled bad. Noisy did get a room change which helped Lobby is beautiful but rooms need updates, a shame because it is a really neat hotel. Front attendant not very friendly, overall a 2/3 rating I would not go back again Sorry. Plus price was higher than elsewhere, could have gotten better for less money. But this hotel looked so cool, very dissapointing.

Beautiful hotel, extremely clean, great staff. The continental breakfast left a little to be desired, but it got us started for our morning. Super convenient to W&L and VMI. We were in town for a wedding and were able to walk to all locations from the hotel. Would absolutely stay here again!

Quaint hotel with classic vibes. If you have a room near the rear of the hotel you will hear the garbage truck dumping the dumpsters in the AM. Sound machine would have fixed that.

Cool aesthetic but the pillows were uncomfortable and there were no outlets by the bed.

Room had very limited space. No electric outlet near bed for medical device. 24" TV. Dated. Boutique hotel that is limited in its appointments. Well maintained for a century's old building.

Beautiful hotel. The only downsides (if you can even call them that) is a small tv in the room and lacking in the working power outlet department but we loved our stay and would stay again!

Jan 2024 We recommend the Gin Hotel which is a vintage hotel with modern - style rooms, with an on- site restaurant (Juniper), in a great location on Main Street, in Lexington, VA. It is walking distance to many restaurants, coffee shops, Just Games game shop, outdoor apparel and camping store Walkabout Outfitter, VMI and Washington and Lee colleges, and so much more. The Gin hotel staff Lindsey and Makayla were friendly, helpful, attentive, and competent. The 5th level story, corner- suites of the Gin offer terrific views of the snowy mountains and shops on Main Street. We stayed in a two - queen bed room for our first two nights and then upgraded to the corner 5th level story suite for our last night. The rooms have a light and airy feel to them. The layout of both is unique. The beds were very comfortable, had great pillows and down comforters which conform to your sleeping position. The King suite has a very large jacuzzi in the bathroom, along with a very modern -style shower, which we loved. There was hot water in abundance! The suite also had a table and 2 chairs, as well as a lounger type comfortable chair which I sat in in front of the window and enjoyed the terrific snow - topped mountain view from. The Gin offers complimentary parking directly behind the hotel. A downfall to the Gin is that there are no mini fridges / microwaves, and breakfast is very limited, but that's ok, because Pronto Caffe (coffee pastry shop) is next door.

The room was clean but be prepared to be awaken each early morning with the trash truck emptying the dumpsters outside. The outlets are not situated by the bed so bring an extension cord to charge your phone. There is no mini fridge or microwave in the room. The grab and go breakfast is just that so we went down the street for breakfast elsewhere.

Convenient location downtown. Free parking. HVAC controls didn't work. Cold breakfast- very limited options, cold coffee, cloudy water, no lighting controls. Tiny TV un-watchable from almost anywhere in the room. Shower design doesn't contain water in the shower basin. These are mostly design and configuration defects not easily corrected.

The room was very basic and looked quite old. The decorating was bare minimum. It was really cold in the room and the sound proofing was not good. We were woken up at 11, 1 and 3 am by people running in the halls and laughing.

I would have rated it a 5 except that you had no control of the temperature in the room. We had to call the front desk to get temperature adjustments and that’s just ridiculous in my opinion.

Beautiful hotel, great value, great location, however the shower was very, very weak and noise from other rooms/the hallway carries quite a bit.

Very good location but room was just good. Carpets a little dingy. Bathroom had waterfall showerhead and nice size. Parking behind hotel was very tight. Excellent proximity to Lex restaurants, shops and W&L campus. Check- in desk staff not very welcoming or friendly.

However, the dining and drinks at the Juniper lounge were terrible. Service and food at dinner was worse than the service we received at Macado's. Food was almost inedible and server was unfriendly and unhelpful. When we asked about getting a bread basket or something similar so we could enjoy relaxing while we ordered, were just told no - drinks were poor at the bar and all in all just disappointing. We had such high hopes for the food and bar since we were staying there

Great check in experience! I was thrilled when I realized we could check in early. It was an absolute wonderful experience! I was so happy with our rooms and the restaurant is a great option. Good food, great service and nice atmosphere! Loved it. Enjoyed staying there and it is right in the middle of shops, restaurants and close to VMI/W & L.

Check-in was relatively quick and easy. The hotel itself is a lovely and quaint building - I appreciated that they honored the history of the building, despite the ownership change. The room was nice, clean, and pretty big - great views and the windows actually opened, so it was great to get the evening air instead of recycled a/c. It would've been nice to have a mini-fridge and microwave - there was plenty of room for both. While the continental breakfast was far from grand, there were adequate options to get the day started quickly and not have to worry about losing time on a sit-down meal. The only real negative was the staff at the front desk. While professional, they were far from friendly, to the point of seeming annoyed. It wasnt enough to put a damper on our fun, but it was palpable. Overall, this is one of my favorite hotels and we'll certainly return.

Upon checking in the lobby smelled like perfume that got into my nose/throat, yuk. There was a Thursday night football game while there and when I went down to the restaurant/bar at 8:45 to get a beverage for the game it was closed (posted hours on door were till 9pm) The door was locked and even though they were inside they wouldn't open the door. The bedsheet had a hole in it. So, nothing big, just really inconvenient, enough that I may not chose to stay there again.

Beautiful historic city. Really enjoyed our stay. Great location. Easy walk to every thing downtown with many restaurants nearby. Recommend the carriage rides. Hotel was fabulous.

Downtown location was ideal for our wants/needs and what we expected.

A very nice update of a classic hotel, with a unique theme around Gin. Fronting right on Main Street, it was easy to walk to the many stores, restaurants and other activities in town. Additionally, the walk to Washington & Lee University or VMI is quick and very pleasant. The parking lot entrance can be hard to find the first time you try, and beware the narrow lanes for navigating it as well.

Everything was great but you can’t get an Uber or Lyft anywhere

The Gin Hotel is a beautifully refurbished "Grand" Hotel in a small Virginia town. Located on Main Street in downtown Lexington, it is two blocks from Washington and Lee University and five blocks from the Virginia Military Institute. Lexington's Main Street has been reinventing itself each year over the fifty-five years since I graduated from W&L and it is now populated with unique shops, craft stores and restaurants. The hotel is quiet, clean and well maintained. Unlike when I was in Lexington in the late 1960s, the town is ringed with the usual collection of mid-level hotel chains. These are all fine hotels but ones like these can be found in virtually every town in the US. Staying in historic downtown Lexington (for the same price) is so much more fun!

Stylish hotel, clean room, very comfy bed, convenient and walkable location. The check-in staff were great, too. The amazing history of the place, and the historic feel were wonderful, too. However, the "breakfast" was a joke. Continental in bare bones. So, stay here, and have breakfast somewhere else.

We were surprised when we could NOT CONTROL the temperature in our room. It is controlled by the hotel. They did provide us with a space heater and extra blanket. They list they have breakfast , but it was continental and not a hot breakfast. Otherwise the staff, room, location was excellent!

Loved the location and hotel in general. Complimentary breakfast...not so much. No utensils and little to pick from.

The Gin Hotel is our favorite hotel to stay in when in Lexington. So many great restaurants within walking distance and the Juniper Lounge on the 2nd floor mezzanine of the hotel is a fun spot to get cocktails and delicious food as well!
