We needed toilet paper there was no one around for our stay of 2 days . We borrowed some unopened paper from the person next door .. No tissues. There was soda bottles left on our dresser. It was a quiet stay and the grounds were nice . Pool was handy.

It was located in a beautiful setting with a waterfall but the rooms needed upgrading ...scuffed furniture, cracked bathroom floor, etc. We dont think the room had been cleaned prior to our arrival. The pool was closed for repairs which was very disappointing. Would not recommend

Great old fashioned motel for the price. The only issue we had was the pool was not going to be open until the day after we left and it was extremely hot.

We’s been wanting to stay here for 30 years, and took a long weekend to do so. The Hotel was nice, clean, quiet and comfortable. We wanted to avoid Lake Placid due to the Can Am Rugby games and found this location perfect. It was close to Whiteface and its trails, close to alot of fishing spots, and had a clean pool and recliners to relax with at the end of an active day. The Fly shop is also amazing, and staffed by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Calling the Hotel a “Resort” is a bit of a stretch, but for the $$ we were happy overall.

Comfortable room. Beautiful setting Restaurant was good. Pool looked amazing but due to weather we didn’t get to use it. I would stay here again. Greeter was wonderful & very full of information. She helped us find location of local attractions.

Mountain view was just the back window. The "patio" was 2 chairs by the front door looking at the parking lot and road. Pool was nice and clean. Beds were comfy. Shower was good. Vintage bath fixtures and tile. It's a motel.... not a resort. I think very misleading. Pricey for what you get in my opinion, but overall it was okay.

Unfortunately, we were unaware that the restaurant would not open till Wednesday and was not prepared for that. We brought our dog, so the restaurant would have been beneficial for our stay. Since he go where we go. There is no access to the creek/river. Steep hill. For our vk that was not a wise choice for us staying at HT

Hungry Trout is a basic motel but very nicely kept. The room was outdated but very clean and comfortable. Trout fishing right out back. Love the keyless entry - not to worry about a check-in time. We have stayed a few times now and will definately go back.

No email was sent regarding check in instructions and there’s no staff and phone rang in office when called with no one to pick up at 5 pm, a guest helped with check In which is nice and automated but poor communication. Bed was uncomfortable and could not sleep properly. Bathroom has hot water was the only plus. windows and blinds are dirty and old with cobwebs and dead bugs between doors . Close to trails.

The location of the property was great, located between Whiteface and Lake Placid. Check in was easy and the room was clean. I would consider staying again, however i must be honest. The bathroom needs serious updating. The tub and sink would not drain, having to stand in ankle deep water in the tub, and toothpaste that would not rinse. The blinds need replaced, the window would not open causing black mold on the sill. Overall, the room itself was dated but nice and the a/c worked great.

We have stayed multiple times at this resort. And it has become our go to when we’re in the area. The property has definitely seen it better days. One of the reasons that we book this place is because of the pool, which was broke for both nights of our stay. The rooms were not clean as compared to stays in the past. Black mold in one of the bathrooms. Drop something on the floor that fell under the bed and when I went to pick it up, there was dirty tissues and old candy underneath the bed. While there was plenty of hot water for the sinks the handle on the tub would only allow the water to get Luke warm at best. On the final day of our stay, the toilet broke.

Where should I start... the entire place looks old,like it's falling apart, however this is not an excuse for the the incredible lack of cleanliness, mess both outside and in the room, sticky chairs and table, broken window blinds, very dirty windows and full of crushed insects, a lot of mold in the bathroom, thick dust everywhere on the lamps or sconces. There were plenty of spider webs between the beds and the bedside table... I don't even want to think if the sheets have been changed or not. I stayed for a few days and although the pool was functional, it was always closed. About the the wifi and the parking, you have to figure it out by yourself... self check in and self check out. I can't understand why there are so many good reviews when the whole place is a disaster, very expensive for what it offers. The restaurant is closed Monday and Tuesday, so I have no idea how it is, however from the outside it kept the same looks as the motel. To add something good about it, the location was good and the views in the area magnificent. I will definitely avoid that place in the future and I don't recommend it.

Hungry Trout Resort is definitely overrated. There’s no microwave in the room, no lunch service available, and WiFi connectivity is poor – expect frequent drops. The room lamps didn’t work properly, making the stay inconvenient. Despite being advertised as a resort, it feels more like an average motel that shouldn’t cost more than $70–$75 per night. The furniture is outdated, and yes, you might even spot spider webs in the room corners. This is an older property like a lot of the small hotels in this area, so it is dated, but very well maintained, cleaned and has all that you need for an enjoyable stay. The location was fantastic. My only negative comment is the beds were horribly hard and uncomfortable. And unfortunately after long days of hiking you need a comfortable bed to sleep in. But balanced with the price, I would definitely stay here again and just bring a mattress topper with me.

Very comfortable beds! Very roomy. Short drive to Lake Placid. One of best motels we have stayed at. Only complaint, and it's minor, no microwave in the room. Short walk to the office to use theirs.

Beds were crazy noisy - husband lifted mattress and the mattress sits in 1/8-1/4 inch paneling/ply wood that is screwed to framing. Owner said no one ever complained about it - Our entire room woke every time someone moved in the bed so we all slept horrible. There was some mold you could see in the windows etc, pretty outdated. But it served the purpose we needed it for.

This is a great place to stay in a beautiful area. The rooms are large and have a beautiful view. The big shower is awesome. The only reason I didn't rate it excellent is because the rooms are so dark. There is no overhead lighting, and the lamps have very dim bulbs in them.

Nice clean room, comfy bed, good shower, nice pool & swings. Pillows were hard. Grounds were more rustic than the website photos. River was far away. It was not a “patio room,” just a small bench by the parking space. Not “mountain view,” just grass and trees. Restaurant was closed. But good price and ok location. Nice owner.

Property is functional but dated and in need of an upgrade. Rooms have electronic door locks but mine and others were without deadbolts which was disconcerting to say the least.

Did not receive daily housekeeping. Asked for clean towels did get 2 bath towels and was told someone would bring us hand towels and face clothes which we did not receive. Had to get our own coffee for the following morning from the office. Cleaning products were very overpowering…. Anyone with sensitivities would not do well. On a positive note the beds were comfortable. We did not feel comfortable here so we left a day early.

I tried to cancel my reservation booked for the end of August 2025 due to my airline. Air Canada went on strike so I couldn’t go to Italy and stay at the hotel. I called the hotel and explained the circumstances and they refused to grant my cancellation and completely charged me the full amount for the room I felt that this is very poor With no understanding about things are out of your control. Very poor customer service.

What a great place to stay, if you want to be close to the mountain, have a amazing restaurant along with a separate pub for a more relaxed atmosphere and the best management that go up and beyond to help you with any thing you need! They plowed me out everytime I needed it! The have great food and always there for you! Well mannered and smart! Thank you for your kindness! Feb 2025 The Puetz family!

No email was sent regarding check in instructions and there’s no staff and phone rang in office when called with no one to pick up at 5 pm, a guest helped with check In which is nice and automated but poor communication. Bed was uncomfortable and could not sleep properly. Bathroom has hot water was the only plus. windows and blinds are dirty and old with cobwebs and dead bugs between doors . Close to trails.

The unique thing was how you just check yourself in . Find your name and room number and with the wave of a hand and phone number ,you're in your room. If you need anything there is a number to call. The place ran itself . I called it the ghost hotel lol. The rooms were big, very clean. Great wifi. Close to many major attractions. Would definitely recommend it. Price was better then other motels in area.

Great motel and clean. Fan in bathroom a bit noisy. Not a lot of dining options nearby especially for breakfast so pack some breakfast foods. Some restaurants not open Mondays and Tuesdays. Really nice scenery in the area and close to High Falls Gorge and around 15 minutes from Lake Placid.

We’s been wanting to stay here for 30 years, and took a long weekend to do so. The Hotel was nice, clean, quiet and comfortable. We wanted to avoid Lake Placid due to the Can Am Rugby games and found this location perfect. It was close to Whiteface and its trails, close to alot of fishing spots, and had a clean pool and recliners to relax with at the end of an active day. The Fly shop is also amazing, and staffed by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Calling the Hotel a “Resort” is a bit of a stretch, but for the $$ we were happy overall.

Amazing place, Everyone is so helpful, rustic setting , beautiful Scenery, Ausable River is right there if you fly fish. The Hungry Trout Restaurant is excellent and Casey makes suberb martinis!

My boyfriend and I visited the hungry trout when we came to Lake Placid so I could run a Spartan Trail race. The end was very nice and we loved that it was near the water and had a restaurant we could also go to. When we checked in on Friday, we visited the restaurant and had a few drinks and liked it a lot the following night we wanted to go and have dinner upstairs. My boyfriend and I arrived at 7:41 PM on Saturday. The hours clearly state the restaurant is open 4 to 9 PM So we became very discouraged when we were told they were closed as soon as we walked into the door. Hostess told us we could check downstairs in the tavern so we went down there where the bartender was sitting at the bar and said as soon as we walked in, we are closed when we questioned the hours we were told we are closed now. We’re looking to get a meal and a few drinks and would have spent over $100 so we were very upset. We were turned away, especially when the hours stated that they were still open other than that. Everything was wonderful. My suggestion might 19 minutes before the stated, closing of the establishment.

This was a great find within minutes of Whiteface. The on-site restaurant though only open wed thru sat was a real find! Beautiful setting and excellent food. Matt who runs the hotel was very accommodating to his guests. Cannot say enough good things about our stay at the hungry trout

Location was great. Local to many attractions and outdoor activities. The room was very dated but serviceable. Beds were comfortable and the area was quiet. Allocating more time for cleaning would improve guest impressions. Washroom sink was not thoroughly cleaned, bathroom amenities were not stocked, and sadly both large windows were quite dirty and smudged, marring the beautiful mountain view. The room had a chair with a cigarette burn on it. Sheets were so wrinkled, they looked like they had been slept in already All these can be easily improved with no added investment. Drive carefully into the property as the driveway is damaged in many areas.

It was like stepping back into 1940. It was disgusting. It smelled like mold and mildew. My son actually got an upper respiratory infection. They said they redid the rooms. It was absolutely gross.

The staff was excellent. Unfortunately when we were there, the pool was closed due to a chemical imbalance. Having operated an apartment complex pool for years, I understand the reasoning, and we found plenty of other things to do in town or in Lake Placid. The location was perfect. Far enough out from the hustle and bustle of Lake Placid, but close enough to be able to enjoy our time.

As a professional medical office cleaner, and knowing The Hungry Trout for a half century as a good place to stay, I was very disappointed to see the new owners have not maintained strict NYS Board of Health standards. My family’s resort in town did so and I was trained to meet that code. The products used for cleaning failed my tests, and the staff was new, not properly trained. Neither the cleaning staff nor the maintenance personnel cleaned out the AC airs filters weekly. My filter looked like a thick blanket. I hope corrections are made.
