Decker Hotel & Bar

Old hotel with beautiful room and soaking tub, very clean. Antiques throughout. Elevator out of order. Second floor undergoing renovation as evidenced by scaffolding left in hallway.

Had stayed at the decker 10 years ago when their bar and restaurant were operating and was excellent. Both are closed now and there is just not a lot else in maquoketa. Place was nearly empty except for us even though there were some events going on in the area. Still a unique and well preserved old hotel but could use a few room updates such as fridge . There also was no ice machine in the place. A minor annoyance but those add up. All in all it was acceptable but not great.

There use to be a restaurant downstairs. The stairwell leading downstairs is now filled with trash! Everyone that parks near the hotel can see the trash pile is they walk to the front door. And the elevator to the guest rooms doesn't work right. The rider has to push the door open manually half way when entering & again half way when exiting. This is a hazard! I think the owner is happy to make money but doesn't have a long term interest in maintaining/improving this property. Very disappointing because it was a nice place!

Great historic building. Clean comfortable room. Only a few cable channels, sound did not work on three. Bar & restaurant are permanently closed. Breakfast bar is cereal & milk. Lobby was freezing. Room was in low fifties. After three or four hours warmed up to 62 degrees F. Went to the adjacent excellent microbrewery to warm up!

Unfortunately the downstairs restaurant and bar is CLOSED indefinitely! Hotel is nicely remodeled for it's age!

The elevator was out of service. We had a room on the third floor. Which wasn’t bad overall. Just during load in and load out. The bed was not very comfortable. I should have asked for a different room. The lounge was closed. It was open last time we were there and were looking forward to it. Overall we enjoy staying at the Decker. But they will need to make some improvements before we return.

I will definitely never stay here again. We booked this hotel room because it was advertised to be a hotel and bar, turns out that the bar is not open. This would’ve been nice to know ahead of time. We would have booked a room in a different place if we would’ve known that the bar was not an option. Also, there is very limited parking that we were not notified about. You can’t park on the street at night, there is side parking off of the building, but all the spots were full. We were forced to park in a sketchy parking lot with sign saying that we were probably going to be towed or we could’ve parked three blocks away in a residential area. To top it all off we found a cockroach in our room. And now the hotel will not respond to phone calls or emails regarding a refund. We left a whole day early due to a cockroach in our room. When we went to go talk to somebody at the front desk, there was nobody there. We ended up leaving a full day early and going to the laundromat and spending $50 to wash all of our laundry. Oh, and we were never provided a Wi-Fi password.

There is no restaurant in the hotel anymore, but several close by. Elevator didn't work but room was nice.

Historic, old hotel. The exterior of the building looked somewhat in need of updating & repair, but the interior & room itself was clean & well maintained. Very disappointed with the breakfast - CHEAP Walmart items & only water to drink. Only ate a fresh banana. The TV channel selection was terrible. Only a handful of channels, & 2 major networks had NO audio.

The breakfast consisted of one type of cereal, water and a banana. My initial reaction from the outside of the building was not good. The outside needs a lot of work and is in rough shape. Let me tell you, when I opened the front door I was taken back with the beauty inside. It was old world, rich and very exquisite. Check in was easy and friendly. But, we were on the 4th floor, which meant we had to use the elevator. Very small and old. The permit in the elevator that was posted said the last inspection was in March 2015, which I hope this is just an oversight and an updated inspection permit was just not posted. The room was pretty cool and the hallways felt like we were in a horror movie (the shining) which created a cool ambiance. There is no door on the bathroom. So privacy isn’t an option while on the toilet or showering. The bed was amazing and the space was cool, but underutilized, with just a few chairs and couch in a huge space. Rain knocked out the satellite, so no tv. Overall I would do it again, but have a better idea what to expect.

While the hotel location was convenient, the overall experience was just okay. We stayed in the Presidential room, and the towels and linens were noticeably threadbare, with the cheapest tissue. There was no designated space to hang clothes, which made keeping the room tidy a bit of a challenge. Additionally, the absence of a blow dryer was inconvenient. Overall, it was a mediocre stay that left much to be desired in terms of comfort and amenities.

This place was fantastic! Amazing deal for such a clean and comfortable room in such a cool historic building. The lobby and stairways were gorgeous. The room was spotless! The bed was extremely comfortable, clean and fresh. Jacuzzi tub/shower in the bathroom as well! Quiet and calm area, we didn’t hear a single thing from our room. Central heat/ac with a thermostat for your room. It was comfortable and quiet as well. Free breakfast too! Literally my only complaint would be that the shower drain wasn’t draining quite fast enough and was starting to fill the tub as I showered but that’s definitely not enough reason to take a star away. 5/5 stay, would absolutely stay here again.

The room appeared clean until my husband moved the wired telephone, revealing months of dust. This morning he turned on the bathroom light and found a bug in the sink. He was ready to check out immediately. Room 214 was quiet. Probably won't stay here again.

Front desk was very nice and lobby is beautiful. This hotel is historic and has a very European feel in the rooms (high ceilings, bathrooms, antique furniture). Everything was spotless, bathrooms small but very clean and refreshed. Shower/tub was excellent and new. We didn't have a hair dryer in the room, but was able to ask for one without problem. Furnishings are very solid. It is currently the best option for the area, hands down. Small town downtown but many eating options all around. We will stay here again!

Bed was comfy and room was clean. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

There were all kinds of nail holes in the walls that was just painted over and the paint was done so sloppily that it was all over the trim board. The bathroom floor was coming up and has mold, wallpaper missing. It could be a very nostalgic hotel, but my room was unacceptable. I should’ve left.

Beautiful room; amazing historical building; pleasant and helpful staff. We enjoyed our stay and would stay here again! Everything was very clean. We slept well.

Unique 150y/o hotel. Had a feeling of stepping back in time, walking through the doors. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Room was a bit small, but manageable. Bathroom was clean, though the sink sprayed everywhere when used. Bath towels were cleaned, but had some big holes in some of them. Beds were noisy and not very comfortable, but they served their purpose.we appreciated the free breakfast, though it was lacking as it was only apples, bananas, granola bars, yogurt, milk, cereal, and a microwaveable sausage and biscuit. Still not sure where the bar/restaurant was at, as the signs for its location were not very clear and you could not walk through the hotel, you had to go out of the hotel to find it. Overall, the Decker served its purpose and made for a unique place to stay.

Wonderful ambiance. 1873 hotel still holds all of its charm. Not every day you get to experience a grand staircase. Room was clean, bed super comfortable. I recommend booking the presidential suite.

We stayed at the Decker Hotel and Bar for one night in mid-September. It is conveniently located in the downtown area and there are several restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. Our room was on the small side, but very clean and quiet. The shower was great and had good water pressure and plentty of hot water. The overhead light didn't work, but there was a small lamp in the room that provided enough light for us, since we were out at a concert most of the night. If we were going to be staying in our room more, we would have requested that we be moved to a different room since the lighting would have been inadequate. If you were going to be staying more than one night or in the room more, I would consider upgrading to a larger room for the space. The room air conditioner worked well and kept the room cool and dry. The mattress was springly and a bit soft for us. I would suggest that it might need replacement, but the linens looked new and were quite comfortable. All in all, this is a good place to stay when visiting the state park and/or a concert at Codfish Hollow Barnstormers.

The room was exceptional. Large sitting room, large comfortable bed. Quiet. Everything was great. Not a cookie cutter room like you get in the chain hotels. The room reminded me of the rooms in old John Wayne movies. Our room would have been reserved for the governor!

The hotel is pretty cool because it is historic and on the main street. The rooms are small but again, it is a historic hotel. Noise comes from the halls easily. Our bed was a double, not the queen we reserved and it was also very noisy. I know it sounds bad :) but even the tiniest movements in the bed were loud and would wake me up. Comfort and cleanliness were okay. Also, bring a blow dryer if you use one, they are not included. Check in and out were extremely easy and quick.

The room was as I expected for a turn of the century building. Very quant room was smaller than newer hotels but that was just perfect for me. The bathroom is in suite but lack counter or storage due to the size. The bath/shower is full sized. Room did have its own ac /heat controls. They requested that I let them know when I wanted them in to clean since I was for 6 days. When I asked they did. This place is great for solo travelers as well as couples. Families should be fine in the bigger suites. It’s a great stay.

Nice old hotel. The only thing wrong with our room is that it could use a table or two to set stuff down on and a closet or a place to hang cloths.

Beautiful historic building in downtown Maquoketa. While it might lack some of the amenities of more modern hotels, it.more than makes up for it character and ambiance. The host that greeted us was very friendly, courteous and nice. Offered to help carry our bags up to our third floor room. It is within walking distance to Maquoketa Brewing and other businesses downtown. Overall would recommend this to anyone looking for a nice peaceful place to stay and would definitely stay here again.

This hotel is in an old building. Really nice things inside. There was only 1 guy running things (he said they were short staffed). Breakfast was the bare minimum. Room was very nice (King), but a couple of the chairs were old and creaky.

Very friendly and helpful staff

The gentleman at the front desk was super helpful and nice! Our room was large enough for three people comfortably. The only “problems” we ran into were there was only one tv in a two bedded room and the breakfast included was yogurt/cereal and cereal bars. There is a diner in town that had great food though as an alternative. Other than that this is a beautiful place to stay, clean and everyone working there was super polite. Thank you for your hospitality!

The place is beautiful if you like history take time to read the front desk newspaper clippings. The beds are very soft and bouncy they do not have a lot of support but I still slept. The neighboring spot is a car lot which uses very bright lights all night long so make sure to keep your blinds closed tightly. The lounge and restaurant were closed. We saw one staff member. He was very nice and attentive.

This old historic hotel is a gem. The manager upgraded us to a beautiful suite with a king size bed without my asking. Super spacious with a jacuzzi tub. Bed was comfy and so were the pillows. Hotel is in the heart of the old downtown in Maquoketa. Great place to stay if you’re visiting the caves. Frig, microwave and Keurig coffee maker in the room. The only disappointment was breakfast. No pastries, breads or juice. Very small selection, but we made do. Overall a wonderful place to stay.

Unique vintage building. Restaurant was unfortunately closed. Located in a very small town but has a few nice pubs and restaurants in the area.

We’ve never stayed in an historic hotel. This hotel is absolutely lovely! Wonderful check in with a fabulous upgrade. Nice little town for walking and dining, as well. Would highly recommend Decker Hotel!

We loved our stay. From the outside the hotel looks run down and not operational but once inside it is gorgeous. The staff were so nice and shared the history of the building. Beautiful old hotel from 1870. Each room is decorated differently. The staircase defines grand. Bed was very comfortable and it was so quiet. We will be back for sure.

Charming boutique hotel. Very clean and quiet. Good restaurants within walking distance. Breakfast is not great, yogurt and cold cereal.

It was a unique historical property with architectural interest. We stayed to be close to the Maquoketa Caves State Park. It was clean and quiet. What we didn't like was the breakfast, in that there was only coffee, hot chocolate, bananas, cold cereal, yogurt and granola bars. I can't have sugar in the morning and look forward to hot tea. There was no hot tea and no protein offerings other than (added sugar) yogurt. I understand if they don't have kitchen facilities, but peanut butter packets and whole wheat English muffins or hard boiled eggs would have been very nice.

GOOD: room clean and well kept, good water pressure, quiet hotels, bed and linens good BAD: the name of the place is Decker Hotel and Bar. but the bar and restaurant were closed. no note of this when i made the reservation. I wasn't able to get a clear answer as to if it was a temporary or permanent problem because the host who was there all weekend barely spoke english. He would answer but i really struggled to understand what he was saying.

The breakfast selection could be expanded, but the hotel was just amazing! The history and decor were one of a kind. Really enjoyed our stay.

Place is very unique! Was disappointed that the hotel bar was not open to the public anymore. We had to ask the hotel to open it up. The bar had no heat as well. The know longer have a bar tender. Was also disappointed in the breakfast. All that was offered was ceral, granola bars and bananas when it used to be a buffet style. They did upgrade us for free.

Don’t take the elevator unless you’re handicapped in some way. Slowest ever! 62 degrees in room, but up to 70 when I got back from restaurant. Breakfast is a joke. Green bananas, Fruit Loops, yogurt, granola bars.

Nice historic hotel. Would have liked a little more of a breakfast and didn’t find an ice machine. Had an elevator to get to the 3rd floor. Would stay again.

The breakfast was a disappointment. Very few selections.

The room was fine, however, I thought the price of $139 was a bit high. The hotel was basically empty. The bar was not open (they offered to open it for just the two of us, but we declined). They no longer have their big breakfast in the mornings. Just a few cold cereals and the standard continental breakfast items. Although this is a beautiful building with a lot of history, we won't be staying there again.

The staff were very helpful and the property itself is very charming! I was slightly disappointed with the breakfast options, however.
