Staff was very welcoming and friendly. Room was very clean and well-maintained, and the overall ambiance was nice. Location is perfect for walking around Salem, and a pretty easy 5-6 minute walk from the trains. Parking is available, but very limited, so make sure you contact the staff and discuss parking options. Since this is an older property, I believe stairs are the only option for the rooms on the higher floors, so if you have issues with stairs you might want to discuss this with staff as well. Overall, a lovely place with friendly staff and a great location. I would definitely recommend it.

The house was amazing. It felt like a bed and breakfast with a stocked kitchen and daily warm baked treats left out for you. Perfect location. Living room with fire places to cozy up to. Everyone who worked here felt like a friend. 10/10 would recommend this !! Also, not haunted so you can relax when you come in for the night!

Had a lovely stay at The Merchant hotel. We absolutely loved the fact that the rooms have a fireplace which we thoroughly enjoyed and took advantage of every morning and evening since it was cold out. We also enjoyed the fireplace in the lobby where we had our morning coffee and complimentary scones. They also bake chocolate chip cookies every afternoon. The staff is friendly and helpful, the main areas and room were very clean. The hotel is central, very close to several shops, restaurants and bars. Highly recommend!

The women at the front desk are the best - kind and ready to do whatever you need to make your stay comfortable. Parking is a little tricky so leave the car at home if possible - everything is within walking distance because the location is perfect. Rooms are comfortable and the front desk provides a lot of treats you will enjoy!

This historic hotel had a modern interior that did not disappoint. The fireplace in our room kept us cozy at night. Daily breakfast and sweet treats and warm cider in the afternoon were wonderful. The staff used texts to communicate with us to ensure we had everything we needed. As soon as you step out of the Merchants front door you are footsteps from restaurants, shops and local attractions. 10/10 recommend. I will definitely stay here again!

Property was beautiful. Better than expected. Right in the heart of Salem, so centrally located you’re surrounded by shops, restaurants, and historic buildings and museums. The hotel itself is amazing. Clean, well decorated, comfortable/cozy. We were in room 7 which is way up stairs but the stairs were fine- no elevator on site. There were fresh yogurts, and other snacks in the fridge which was in the little kitchenette area outside our room. View was of the street and front yard which was awesome. Theres not an actual breakfast but there were breakfast sandwiches and egg bites in that little fridge. And there was an expresso machine. In the main lobby, there was another kitchen-like area and in the morning there was a spinach pie and scones. All was well. Check in at 4 checkout at 11. Wish it was earlier check in and atleast a 12pm check out but that’s the norm now a days. All in all we’d deff stay again! Also no haunted stuff experienced by us.. unfortunately

Enjoyed our visit to Salem and the Merchant. This hotel was on my wife's bucket list. I would have looked for a first floor room when I booked if I realized I would have to climb to the third floor with significant disability of my legs. We may return to the Merchant if we can get first floor accommodations.

This was our best accommodation on our road trip and we do missed this place. This place is a mix between a Hotel and a bed and Breakfast (Without the host leaving there). We just felt right at home. The location is perfect to do do everything on foot. The parking (Extra Charge) was right behind the hotel. Communication was excellent. Kitchen very well equipped for Hot drinks, +++ Free Nespresso machine, Free snacks, amazing hot cookies served at 4pm. The living room is a lovely place to hang out (Amazing when you are jet lagged and you don't want to wake up the whole room at 5 am) The room was big enough for the 4 of us (2 adults and 2 kids). Just loved the place and would love to come back one day.

I absolutely loved my stay! My dream place in Salem! The kindness of the staff, the cleanliness, the location, the price—everything is perfect! I have never slept so well in a bed as the one I had there. Plus, they offer cookies and scones starting at 4 p.m., and delightful morning treats at 9 a.m.! There’s limited on-site parking available, as well as another lot not far away. I’ve found my place to stay in Salem—50/5 stars! I can’t wait to come back, thank you for everything!

Nicely updated older home in a convenient location for visiting Salem on foot (we were just going to Salem Hospital for a 7 a.m. appointment, and it was four minutes away). The facilities were very clean, the bed comfortable, the bathroom refurb gets "two thumbs up" (especially the thermostatic floor heaters and no-slip shower floor), there were nice breakfast items (although not ready until a bit after 9 a.m., so we grabbed a couple of cold items from the fridge before 7 and came back to pick up the fresh items...there was also an assortment of complimentary snacks), there was a large plate of fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies in the kitchenette area when we arrived, and two complimentary bottles of water were provided in the room. Only two parking spaces behind the building ($25/night), but others are available nearby ($10/night). Staff regularly communicated by text, so all went smoothly. Not much counter space in our bathroom, but we worked it out.

Wonderful place! Very clean, quiet, great location. Walking distance to everything. It was awesome staying in a historical building. We didn’t know that on one of our tours, our exact room was apart of the tour! It was awesome. We will defiantly come back, and bring our friends and family.

The Merchant was a very unique stay. The front desk people were very friendly when making the reservation for the property as well as one of their parking spots. The room was gorgeous and very well cleaned. The snacks and drinks offered in their kitchen was a very welcomed treat upon returning at night.

The hotel is well situated and the common areas very pleasant. Our room was fine other than the carpet which was dirty and stained. The shower control was broken and fell off constantly. We also didn’t get our room cleaned because we did realise you had to hang a sign on the door to request it! The staff were nice and the complimentary tea/coffee etc a nice touch.

Lovely hotel right in the center of everything. Loved the modern, quirky (in a good way) decor mixed with the traditional style of the historic building. Place was very clean, well-appointed (hair dryer, robes, iron, soaps/lotions, glassware, cork screw, water in the rooms) with a lovely sitting area and well-stocked kitchenette. Front desk staff was very nice and helpful. Would absolutely visit again.

I really enjoyed breakfast by the fireplace! I appreciate the choice of teas, delicious frittata, and yogurt compote. The room was lovely and spacious, and the staff were excellent.

Fairly nice rooms but noise level and level cooling was lacking based upon price point. Hotel is unstaffed after 5 pm. Room rate included a breakfast but we never saw breakfast arrive as expected the option promised other than self service options for breakfast.

Shared fridge was not ideal. The air conditioning wasn’t great, but the staff were kind and helpful. During our stay, there was construction which made exiting with our luggage more strenuous than expected. Really enjoyed the heated bathroom floor and fireplace, however the room was smaller than desired. Will not return to this hotel if staying in Salem again.

I had a great stay at the Merchant. While walking through the beautiful hotel and the George Washington room where I slept, I couldn’t help but wonder if the place is haunted. It’s old and modern. Staff were friendly. Parking lot is right around the corner. I had the best shower there in my life. The water felt so good. Thinking of returning sometime in the future.

The only thing we found strange was that the TV was on the same wall as the bed and could not be turned to face the bed so you had to watch on an angle. Maybe add an arm that can turn or put it on a tv table to make it more accessible.

This historic hotel had a modern interior that did not disappoint. The fireplace in our room kept us cozy at night. Daily breakfast and sweet treats and warm cider in the afternoon were wonderful. The staff used texts to communicate with us to ensure we had everything we needed. As soon as you step out of the Merchants front door you are footsteps from restaurants, shops and local attractions. 10/10 recommend. I will definitely stay here again!

Not only was the property and room absolutely adorable and homey but the amenities were next level amazing… the chocolate chip cookies OMG. The fireplace in the room was wonderful and kept us nice and toasty! The bathroom floor was heated and felt amazing! Bed was super comfy, it made us not want to leave! The stairs were beautiful but carrying luggage was a bit difficult, we appreciated the staff helping get bags up to our room. Not only were the cookies to die for but the fridges were stocked with delicious goodies as well (I personally enjoyed the quiche and yogurt parfait!)!!! If you are wanting to walk to all the historic sites, the Merchant is in the best location! The staff was so nice and helpful! They even allowed us to keep our luggage there while we continue to explore the town after check out. We will definitely be returning back to The Merchant for our next stay in Salem!

I felt the property was average. I found it interesting that it advertises itself as an old historical house, which it was, however everything to do with it was via computer. The only interaction I had with a human presence was the day I checked in I was briefly greeted (cordially) by an employee in a very small "office". That employee leaves in the early evening. Other than that I rarely saw another guest and definitely no employees. It gives off the vibe of historical antiquity in a totally computerized environment. Not what I was expecting.

Super tasteful, nicely decorated, comfortable. Hit the sweet spot, imo, between a b and b and a hotel. Not as old lady dingy as the former, and not as anonymous and cookie cutter as the latter. Text communication was prompt, courteous and not too much. Great spot.

Fairly nice rooms but noise level and level cooling was lacking based upon price point. Hotel is unstaffed after 5 pm. Room rate included a breakfast but we never saw breakfast arrive as expected the option promised other than self service options for breakfast.

This was our best accommodation on our road trip and we do missed this place. This place is a mix between a Hotel and a bed and Breakfast (Without the host leaving there). We just felt right at home. The location is perfect to do do everything on foot. The parking (Extra Charge) was right behind the hotel. Communication was excellent. Kitchen very well equipped for Hot drinks, +++ Free Nespresso machine, Free snacks, amazing hot cookies served at 4pm. The living room is a lovely place to hang out (Amazing when you are jet lagged and you don't want to wake up the whole room at 5 am) The room was big enough for the 4 of us (2 adults and 2 kids). Just loved the place and would love to come back one day.

Property was beautiful. Better than expected. Right in the heart of Salem, so centrally located you’re surrounded by shops, restaurants, and historic buildings and museums. The hotel itself is amazing. Clean, well decorated, comfortable/cozy. We were in room 7 which is way up stairs but the stairs were fine- no elevator on site. There were fresh yogurts, and other snacks in the fridge which was in the little kitchenette area outside our room. View was of the street and front yard which was awesome. Theres not an actual breakfast but there were breakfast sandwiches and egg bites in that little fridge. And there was an expresso machine. In the main lobby, there was another kitchen-like area and in the morning there was a spinach pie and scones. All was well. Check in at 4 checkout at 11. Wish it was earlier check in and atleast a 12pm check out but that’s the norm now a days. All in all we’d deff stay again! Also no haunted stuff experienced by us.. unfortunately

Nicely updated older home in a convenient location for visiting Salem on foot (we were just going to Salem Hospital for a 7 a.m. appointment, and it was four minutes away). The facilities were very clean, the bed comfortable, the bathroom refurb gets "two thumbs up" (especially the thermostatic floor heaters and no-slip shower floor), there were nice breakfast items (although not ready until a bit after 9 a.m., so we grabbed a couple of cold items from the fridge before 7 and came back to pick up the fresh items...there was also an assortment of complimentary snacks), there was a large plate of fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies in the kitchenette area when we arrived, and two complimentary bottles of water were provided in the room. Only two parking spaces behind the building ($25/night), but others are available nearby ($10/night). Staff regularly communicated by text, so all went smoothly. Not much counter space in our bathroom, but we worked it out.

I absolutely loved my stay at The Merchant. The building is beautiful and full of character. The kitchen was impressively stocked with healthy options like overnight oats, chia pudding, yogurt parfait and even hot cider and chocolate chip cookies. I also loved the Nespresso coffee and tea selection. The living room was our favorite spot calm, cozy, and perfect for relaxing by the fireplace with tea before bed. Everything about the atmosphere felt peaceful and welcoming. The only small thing to note as is expected in charming old buildings is that sound carries more than you might think. It caught me a bit off guard, but it’s just part of the historic charm!

It’s right in the heart of downtown Salem and within walking distance to great restaurants, museums, and local landmarks. The property is beautiful and well designed. The room was very clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The fireplace was wonderful. They had snacks and beverages available 24/7. It’s right in the heart of downtown Salem and within walking distance to great restaurants, museums, and local landmarks. I had an excellent experience staying at The Merchant and hope to stay there again.
