McMenamins White Eagle

The White Eagle is a quirky, small hotel in an industrial area of Portland with a downstairs saloon that features live music. My room was very small, but comfy. The A/C kept it cool on a hot day. There is no television. A sink is in the room. Toilets and showers are in the hall. All the rooms have names on the door-my room was Griselda, and there was a poem with that name painted on the wall. Art abounds. There are prints of geisha girls and posters for rock concerts in the hall. The showers have attractive mosaics with a white eagle theme. The downstairs restaurant which has an outside patio serves tasty pub fare and there is a full bar. The staff are attentive and friendly. One checks in at the bar and receives a room key. If any after hours issues come up one calls the Crystal Hotel. There were a few issues that came up during my stay but they were quickly resolved. When I checked in, the hotel had no record of me, even though I had received a welcoming email from the hotel. It turned out I was registered for August 2027. They said glitches like that happen with 3rd party bookings. When I received my bill electronically after checking out there was a $30 pet fee, though I had no pet. I had to call the hotel to get that taken off. If your idea of a hotel stay is luxuriating in a hot bath then watching cable TV from a California king size bed this is not the hotel for you. But if you want an out of the ordinary hotel, you're in luck!

Walking distance to the Moda Center. Love the history of the place. No issues with our car parking on the street. Great, friendly staff.

This is a fun place to stay, and definitely the cleanest and coolest at the price. You have to share a bathroom and you can clearly hear the band in the bar, so if you plan to take a bath and go to bed early, look elsewhere. Bonus for being next to Bernstein Bagel's for an easy morning treat.

They need to be clear there are 6 parking spots which are free. Very limited packing onsite. Free coffeeb

Unique old saloon and hotel. The bar and restaurant with live music is really nice. The rooms are small but comfortable. There is a bit of noise in the rooms from the live music events.

Beds are wonderful—-fun, artsy, historic bldg. with a strong music vibe. My reason for being there was to listen to a concert. Coffee is set up in the morning on the hotel floor with real half n half to put in the delicious coffee! I ate dinner there while listening to the music—-great food with some healthy choices!

Live music on Friday night was fun. Enjoyed drinks and playing Jenga in the bar. Great atmosphere.

I love the uniqueness of the hotel. My only real complaint was that my room kind of smelled like a wet dog. It may have been the bedding, I'm not sure. Not a very pleasant smell, but I'm aware the building is very old. I did not really smell it in other areas.

Lovely old Hotel that has been renovated but not lost her character and charm.

My room was clean and comfy. Check in was efficient. My only suggestion is that you put the coffee out earlier.

Check in was good and informative. Area close to city transit train transfer to PDX. Ants were in bedroom and crawling all over in shared shower room. For the room amenities were great! Soap. Shampoo. Bathmat, towels and handcloths. No television, but not there to watch TV.

Great location, but it's really an entertainment bar with rooms above. Very few amenities in the rooms, no TV, no ironing boards, no microwaves, no mini fridges, no coffee makers, not even a closet or bureau. The bed was very comfortable and there is internet, but I highly recommend bringing ear plugs (I'm surprised they are not provided) as the live music downstairs is so loud, you'd think they were playing right outside your door.

A unique lodging experience for sure. The bar/restaurant was the real winner. The property boasts a turn of the century bar that is photo worthy. Unfortunately we lodged there on a night without music but still awesome. The one area for improvement is the bed size. My wife and I shared a full size bed, Yikes! My big butt was spilling out of the side of the bed but the stay was memorable.

Great little spot to stay for the night. Cute, functionally efficient. Little confusing for check in (check in is with the bartenders). You may want to check on the live music schedule at the saloon. They had live music until 11 PM and the music can be heard and felt in the guest rooms which are upstairs.

The White Eagle does not have staff available after the downstairs bar closes. If staff is needed after hours, a courtesy phone in the hallway dials a downtown hotel also owned by McMenamins. Luckily, I didn’t lock myself out of my room after hours. I did not feel unsafe, however, if I felt uneasy around any guests, I’m not sure if it would have been a good night’s sleep. It was an inexpensive place to stay near a light rail stop close to downtown. Comfortable bed. Close to I-5.

I really loved staying here. The staff was incredible and even waited up for me to ensure I got into my room after my flight was supee delayed. It was a really cool set up and expeilrience. If you are looking for your typical hotel experience, this is probably not the place. The rooms are smaller and it is a shared bathroom and shower. However if tou are looking forna unique and really fun experience, this is the place. Live music downstairs, good food, and quirky rooms easily walkable to a lot of cool bars ans shops. I would highly recommend.

Problem with check in. They didn’t recognize my orbitz reservation

Upon check out the hotel charged me 80 additional dollars for no reason

Property was everything I was expecting and I enjoyed my stay. There seems to be a issue with this McMenamins and reservations through Orbitz. They could not find my prepaid reservation and had to contact another McMenamins for correction. That took 40 minutes!! Fortunately I was meeting my family there for dinner and I was not in a rush but it was still concerning.

The room was adorable I just don’t understand why you get charged $60 plus more after you check in and you paid for your night thru hotel.com. At first I thought maybe a deposit but It is still on my account so that is not it. Any ideas? It says EX charge plus tourism tax

Nice enough for some budget accommodations, having to get decent to use the toilet at night gets a little tedious. If you are unfamiliar with Portland, this is not the "nice" part of the city, it\'s the "if you see another human after dark, you need to avoid them" part. Very conveniently located by the railyards though.

Sweet and comforting. We went to a show in town and came back late, ordered tots from the restaurant that were so delicious! Slept well, headed out early. Very charming hotel.

Super cute rooms, was better than I anticipated even with very good description of facilities. The host was awesome! Yummy food as well.
