The George Townhouse

This was our second stay at the George. It's a lovely pub with rooms, with a great location. The manager and staff are welcoming. The rooms are really clean, smart, modern but in keeping with the building. Great bathrooms and amenities including Nespresso machine. The food in the restaurant is excellent. We only had a few areas for improvement. Firstly, our Saturday evening 7.30 restaurant booking started well, but at 8pm a singer/guitarist started playing in the bar. It was very loud (and he wasn't very good either) and it stopped all conversation on our table. I made a quiet complaint to ask if there was any way he could be turned down. He was on for 2 hours. There were hardly any people in the bar listening so all it did was provide a negative experience to diners. Unfortunately the service also deteriorated after the starters with our mains not arriving until 8.45. the music after a short break, resumed, and we decided to skip dessert. This didn't happen the last time we were there but if this happens on a Saturday night going forward it will influence our decision to eat in the restaurant. The other issue was that our bed this time was far too soft and uncomfortable. Again, this wasn't the case the last time so maybe it was just that room. Breakfast, however, was superb and service back on point. The George is very nearly a perfect Cotswold bolthole and we hope to stay again.

Fabulous shower and amazing locations and quantity of electric outlets with USB ports. Great location for trips in Cotswolds and evenings at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon. Have already suggested George Townhouse for place to stay or eat/drink. Hotel is on top of very large pub with free parking for clients.

This is a lively pub and you need to be aware of that if expecting more of a hotel environment. Unfortunately no lounge area or area to relax except for the bar/pub area. In addition there was no soft seating or easy chair in the room so the only option was to sit on the bed or a standard dining type chair. Bed was very comfortable and there was a nespresso coffee machine in the room. Shower was good with rain shower as well as hand held shower, but unfortunately you had to be quick as the shower tray filled up quite quickly and was slow to drain away. Very close to overflowing in just 3/4 minutes in the shower. Having said all of that the service and staff were excellent, the price reasonable and breakfast was fantastic. Overall we enjoyed our mini break.

We loved our 2-night stay at The George. The community of Shipston-on-Stour is picture perfect, and The George offered everything we were hoping for in our first visit to the Cotswalds. The restaurant is excellent, with a varied menu that felt both local and first class. The room was very comfortable, with an especially beautiful bathroom that featured a very modern double shower. The added touches like a fresh-baked cookie left in our room and handy access to the main floor pub and gorgeous pub patio made the stay even more special. We had hired a car, and parking was convenient and abundant, both in the hotel's own small parking lot as well as on the street. I would highly recommend including the breakfast option in your reservation - the pre-paid breakfast included both a continental buffet and a hot breakfast off the menu. The hot breakfast options were exceptional and very good value.

Attractive old coaching house in pleasant, historic village square. Clean and tastefully modernised interior and lovely outdoor terrace for sunny days. Free car park, very friendly and courteous staff, good food and beer and clean, well-equipped room, comfy bed and superb shower. Would happily stay again. Some noise from plumbing system, but it is an old building - was not a great issue for us.

The room (7) was very small, uneven flooring, view over rooftop - kitchen chimney, lots of pigeons excrement , lots of pigeons staring through our window, broken fence panel leant against a wall, lots of unused equipment dumped. Strong smell of cooking even when window closed. Breakfast was a problem, no hot water in the flask for filling a teapot, the toaster was taking an age to pop up, one of the other guests said that if you were needing a run, have it now as the toaster still won’t be ready when you get back. When our full English arrived the poached eggs were not runny, rather solid and unappetising, the sausage was hard and overcooked or re cooked, the baked Ben’s had clearly been under a heat lamp with an overcooked look. The bacon was extremely SALTY, cold and dry, and the cooked potato slices were very hot and unnecessarily spiced. Neither my husband or I could eat this, so left it. When asked by the waitress I told her of our problems and was told the cost would be taken off our account, but obviously we were hungry and had to go elsewhere to eat. When we returned in the late afternoon the car park was full of customers for the bar, so we then had to find alternative parking, even though we booked the hotel as they had parking, it was not available for their guests. As we were leaving the next day this meant having to walk to the car park to retrieve the car before we could load up and leave. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. full English arrived,

Lovely place to stay while visiting family. Very clean and smart. posh rooms and in. Beer not to my liking though! Im not a lager drinker.

We stayed here a year ago and loved it. The rooms were beautifully decorated and furnished and the location was ideal. This time we stayed in a different (slightly more expensive) room. The room was impeccably clean and was well decorated. The drains in the bathroom appeared to be a little 'off' but the smell did eventually clear. In the late evening we noticed a banging /humming noise which sounded a little like someone drilling or a failling electonic pump. The noise was intermittent but incredibly irritating. We finally managed to get to sleep. In the morning (of a 2 night stay) i reported it to the staff at breakfast. Upon our return late in the day i asked if it had been looked at. The manager said he had not been told about it and to be fair he did come up and listen. He said he would not have time to investigate as he was busy elsewhere and that the hotel was fully booked and so we could not move to a quieter room. We had another disrupted night and left in the morning. I really hope that we will be able to stay again one day but i would avoid room 14 unless they have got this sorted. I would generally highly recommended this place. Shame that something so small completely marred or weekend as we couldn't sleep.

Great staff , any issues were delt with fast, didn't like window and surrounding plastering if it had rained it probably would have been wet and let in rain (needs fixing).room 9💦

Hotel room was very clean and comfortable with lovely details such as complimentry water and homemade cookies in room. Ate dinner in restaurant, lovely decor and the food was of lovely quality and big portions. Would recommend.

Deluxe room 3 was spacious, over looking the high street, but the double bed was narrow. Will certainly return, and choose a twin room made up as a double. Great value in this charming market town.

Lovely rooms, very modern and comfortable. Stsff were very accomodating and friendly. Food was great. Only complaint is that rooms were quite hot, but most rooms had 2 fans provided so was fine.

We chose a ‘cosy’ room to attend a wedding. The room was reasonably priced. The room had all the facilities we needed, a lovely large walk in shower, coffee machine with pods, the only negative was that the bed was very squeaky. It was only me and my sister staying but even turning in the bed made a noise. The food in the hotel was excellent, we ate breakfast on both days and dinner. Staff were very helpful.

We loved our stay at The Geroge Townhouse. The room was spacious and even had a nespresso machine so we felt we had hit something luxurious and, in many ways, we had! The bathroom was huge, warm and had a wonderful shower where you can have a large spray head or a small one. Choice! Meals were great. Staff were great. What else can I say?

Our stay at the George Townhouse was good except for an uncomfortably hot room. The heated towel bar in the bathroom could not be turned off and radiated heat into the room. We had the windows opened and the fan running but couldn't get the temperature down. Our room was spacious and well appointed. Housekeeping staff were friendly and very helpful. Fresh cookies and rolls were a treat with coffee from the machine provided in our room. The manager was helpful despite being short staffed. She went out of her way to find two reading headlights we neglected to pack before leaving. Despite the towel bar issue, it was a good stay and a welcome departure from chain hotels.

Central location in nice small town, hotel found to be decent but average for the price bracket. Would not class it as a “boutique hotel”. Sleigh type bed in the Suite had the most uncomfortable unsupportive mattress and pillows I think I have ever slept on, definitely needs changing. Overall we give it 3 stars, average and not one we will use again.

Staff all seemed really friendly and helpful particularly as we did encounter a problem with our room , however the manager dealt with this promptly and efficiently and we were pleasantly surprised how kind he was due to this. Breakfast was fantastic and plenty of choice. We would not hesitate to return if we needed to be in the area again .

Check in was as stated 3pm on the dot but not before. Not a problem. Staff were brilliant and extremely helpful and friendly. Food was lovely. The building has loads of history too by the looks of it. It's a shame there is nothing displayed or available to tell it's story over the years. That would make it so much more interesting.

I stayed at The George Townhouse as I was attending a wedding at nearby Blackwell Grange. The hotel understood about the wedding timings and facilitated a smooth check in process. My room was superb with a good sized bed and beautiful roll top bath. What made my stay was the service of the staff and how they went out of their way to accommodate any needs I had. Service was good for breakfast and check out was easy. Simon and Sharon who were the staff were welcoming and made the stay. I would now like to return again to stay for longer and explore the area. Thank you so much - an excellent experience!

The staff were very helpful and also we were offered a room upgrade. The breakfast was very imaginative.

Lovely accommodation/room. Majority of the staff were great. It was loud at night when people were eating and drinking outside in the pub garden. Overall it was a nice stay.

Relaxed, unrushed yet attentive service. Good sized rooms. Very pleasant evening meal.
