Very unique hotel. This used to be a high school in 1921. Rooms are large, with great wood floors and high ceilings. Wonderful breakfast. They also have great dinner menu options. They have free bicycles.

In the heart of town, this location is great to walk about and is close to the college. The hotel welcomes pets, is close to several parks and has plenty of parking. The outdoor seating is very nice in mild weather - but could be unbearably hot and sunny seasonally. We were there for a few days in May. The lovely woman who seems to keep everything in the breakfast area running was wonderfully helpful and accommodating. The breakfast was nice, with hot and cold choices. And coffee is always available in the Periodic Table dining area. Coffee makers are provided in the rooms and there is a small fridge. We did not sleep well due to the thin, seemingly un-insulated walls and floors. The creaking old wood school room floors are charming to look at but the crinkling wakes a sleeper as one walks to the loo, and the upstairs walkers can sound strikingly loud. We heard thumping and banging at all hours. The room is spartan - lacking comfortable or enough seating, no rugs to absorb sound or soften the hard floor. The hand held shower curiously faces into the bathroom so the bather has to squeeze between the flow of water and the wall or the room will flood. We found the rooms elementary, (pun intended.) Everything you require is there but there are no extra comforts or pleasures. Finally, the tv was not a smart tv. Sigh. Grinnell needs a nice hotel and this place has unmet potential. Hoping for improvements over time. Cheers.

If you need to travel to Grinnell, this is without a doubt the nicest hotel in the area. However, the walls are paper thin and we could hear all the conversations from the room next to ours. The old hardwood floors are so squeaky that if anyone in the room adjacent to ours got up during the night, we would hear them. The elevator works good, but it makes an unsettling noise right before it stops, so loud that my son did not feel comfortable in it. The room itself is beautiful and in good condition. The hotel advertises that it offers free breakfast, but in fact it offers $10 vouchers per person for nearby restaurants that offer breakfast. The hotel does not have its own private parking lot, but rather street parking.

Hotel was easy to find and parking was easily accessible. Staff was very nice and helpful and check in was very easy, even after posted hours. Rooms were clean and cozy, although old electrical and plumbing makes for a constant humm noise. Nonetheless, the history and architecture of the building were fun to learn about. The restaurant "Periodic Table" was a fun lounge with games including Scrabble, shuffleboard, and skeeball, along with card games. If you are a gamer, you'll love hanging out in the lounge, bring an extra set of your favorite card game to donate as the games have clearly seen better days! Due to visiting during the off-season, breakfast was not available, so we received vouchers for nearby restaurants. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend booking here if you are visiting Grinnel College or just the town.

Very nice local hotel in a former school. Room and bathroom were clean and in excellent condition. Price was very reasonable. Only about a 10 min drive from interstate 80. Complimentary breakfast was excellent. My wife and I would stay here again if in the area. 4/5 stars for service because there staff is not always at the front desk and can take a few minutes for staff to arrive when called. However, did not detract from our staff.

They gave us a loft studio and the floors creaked badly and the tiles were coming apart on the floor. Restaurant closed at 9 pm and there was no room service. For the money they charged , it was quite terrible.

Everything was great! Very clean. Hallway on the third floor had a strange smell but not terrible. The shower has the new style with half of a door (no curtain) which is nice except the rain shower a hole that sprayed sideways and flooded the floor. The free breakfast was perfect. We were going to go to the restaurant the night before for an appetizer and have nachos but they were $25! Overall a very nice hotel but not sure it's worth the price. It is also strange that no one is at the front desk, you have to call them on the phone. If the price was much lower, I would stay again

Stayed here during college visits. We had visited Drake and then traveled to Grinnell to tour the college the next day. This looked like a fun place to stay. The building is really cool - I loved the reuse of the school into a hotel. Lots of fun features throughout that hinted either subtly or directly at the building's former life. The staff were universally great. Friendly and helpful. The room was spacious but otherwise not amazing. Outlets were in weird locations either they were not near the beds, or they were behind them - or on the opposite walls. There were plenty of outlets generally, just not where you needed them. The bathroom was gross - the shower had a lot of hair in it (yuck) and the faucet needed cleaning - significant soap scum or something. There were holes in the sheets. They send a welcome email, but they didn't send it until the day after we left. Lots of helpful text messages, but when I texted back that my stay was a 3 our of 5 and the reasons why, there was no response. Overall I'd probably stay here again given the other options, but it was not a great experience.

Since I haven't been traveling much lately, I wanted to stay someplace nice--and Hotel Grinnell definitely was that. Since they repurposed an old school into a hotel, they used a school theme throughout. Rooms are a wonderful mix of new and old--nice, clean modern styling, but with the wonderful old hardwood floors from days gone by. Other guests made the same comments as I did, "This place is cool!"

Very unique hotel. This used to be a high school in 1921. Rooms are large, with great wood floors and high ceilings. Wonderful breakfast. They also have great dinner menu options. They have free bicycles.

Not enough power outlets. There are a lack of electrical outlets in the room. The bed table in the room had no electrical outlets. i brought my own power-strip in order to plug in both my phone and my computer at the desk.

Had the best night sleep at Hotel Grinnell, during artic blast snow storm. The temperature was -9 with a wind chill of negative -25. The heat wasn't working enough to keep the building warm, but management made sure people that needed it had a space heater. Shower water was hot. Thank goodness the pipes didn't freeze. Love the double head rain fall showerhead. This is my 2nd time staying at this property, and I have already made my next reservation. I would go out of my way to stay at this hotel.

They gave us a loft studio and the floors creaked badly and the tiles were coming apart on the floor. Restaurant closed at 9 pm and there was no room service. For the money they charged , it was quite terrible.

In the heart of town, this location is great to walk about and is close to the college. The hotel welcomes pets, is close to several parks and has plenty of parking. The outdoor seating is very nice in mild weather - but could be unbearably hot and sunny seasonally. We were there for a few days in May. The lovely woman who seems to keep everything in the breakfast area running was wonderfully helpful and accommodating. The breakfast was nice, with hot and cold choices. And coffee is always available in the Periodic Table dining area. Coffee makers are provided in the rooms and there is a small fridge. We did not sleep well due to the thin, seemingly un-insulated walls and floors. The creaking old wood school room floors are charming to look at but the crinkling wakes a sleeper as one walks to the loo, and the upstairs walkers can sound strikingly loud. We heard thumping and banging at all hours. The room is spartan - lacking comfortable or enough seating, no rugs to absorb sound or soften the hard floor. The hand held shower curiously faces into the bathroom so the bather has to squeeze between the flow of water and the wall or the room will flood. We found the rooms elementary, (pun intended.) Everything you require is there but there are no extra comforts or pleasures. Finally, the tv was not a smart tv. Sigh. Grinnell needs a nice hotel and this place has unmet potential. Hoping for improvements over time. Cheers.

Stayed here during college visits. We had visited Drake and then traveled to Grinnell to tour the college the next day. This looked like a fun place to stay. The building is really cool - I loved the reuse of the school into a hotel. Lots of fun features throughout that hinted either subtly or directly at the building's former life. The staff were universally great. Friendly and helpful. The room was spacious but otherwise not amazing. Outlets were in weird locations either they were not near the beds, or they were behind them - or on the opposite walls. There were plenty of outlets generally, just not where you needed them. The bathroom was gross - the shower had a lot of hair in it (yuck) and the faucet needed cleaning - significant soap scum or something. There were holes in the sheets. They send a welcome email, but they didn't send it until the day after we left. Lots of helpful text messages, but when I texted back that my stay was a 3 our of 5 and the reasons why, there was no response. Overall I'd probably stay here again given the other options, but it was not a great experience.

If you need to travel to Grinnell, this is without a doubt the nicest hotel in the area. However, the walls are paper thin and we could hear all the conversations from the room next to ours. The old hardwood floors are so squeaky that if anyone in the room adjacent to ours got up during the night, we would hear them. The elevator works good, but it makes an unsettling noise right before it stops, so loud that my son did not feel comfortable in it. The room itself is beautiful and in good condition. The hotel advertises that it offers free breakfast, but in fact it offers $10 vouchers per person for nearby restaurants that offer breakfast. The hotel does not have its own private parking lot, but rather street parking.

Prices reflect being in the middle of town vs. somewhere in a chain motel closer to the interstate, I guess. Breakfast buffet not quite as good as I remember it from previous visits now that it's kept out of the PT space occupied by the Prairie Canary folks.

Very nice local hotel in a former school. Room and bathroom were clean and in excellent condition. Price was very reasonable. Only about a 10 min drive from interstate 80. Complimentary breakfast was excellent. My wife and I would stay here again if in the area. 4/5 stars for service because there staff is not always at the front desk and can take a few minutes for staff to arrive when called. However, did not detract from our staff.

There was no one at the front desk when we arrived. They said they would email the final bill to me, it never came. The breakfast was lame. There are much better options in town. It was expensave for the services we received, The employees were not friendly.

Hotel was easy to find and parking was easily accessible. Staff was very nice and helpful and check in was very easy, even after posted hours. Rooms were clean and cozy, although old electrical and plumbing makes for a constant humm noise. Nonetheless, the history and architecture of the building were fun to learn about. The restaurant "Periodic Table" was a fun lounge with games including Scrabble, shuffleboard, and skeeball, along with card games. If you are a gamer, you'll love hanging out in the lounge, bring an extra set of your favorite card game to donate as the games have clearly seen better days! Due to visiting during the off-season, breakfast was not available, so we received vouchers for nearby restaurants. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend booking here if you are visiting Grinnel College or just the town.

Very charming hotel, converted from a former Junior High School. Retains much of the original wooden and tile flooring,just adds to the overall charm of the place. Staff very helpful and the free breakfast was delicious.

Unique hotel; spacious halls, comfortable bed, modern bathroom with nice penny tile, nice hardwood floors, so close to Central Park, great Buddha Bowl.

Converted school building with lots of operational oddities and disappointments. Check in not at front desk but in a poorly marked bar behind a large door. Room was okay but not cleaned fully. Trash not emptied, black specs on sheet. Told staff bartender/front desk, he shrugged said they had new housekeeping-no apology or anything. Shower never got hot. Then the black tie on the door, no explanation but is the "do not disturb" signal-odd. For price point none of this good.

I wanted to love this hotel so bad! I love adaptive reuse projects— such a cool building, but the experience was subpar due to cost saving compromises. I expect quirky/unique properties to have a few glitches, but this property had too many for the price tag. Here’s where this hotel scores low: -no restaurant on site, contrary to the Expedia listing. -no hot water in shower and “rain shower head” clogged. Low quality soap/lotion in random dollar store bottles. For comparison The Graduate hotels provides Malin & Goetz, Surety Hotel provides Byredo. -Air conditioning in rooms are poorly executed. Window units with plywood and large gaps. Unsightly and loud. -No air conditioning in common areas (hall ways, gym, etc…) -Room decor is odd. Nice case goods but weird cheap Asian themed art. kills the vibe. -no original building features in rooms. Drywall and luxury vinyl :( Not worth the price. Stay in Des Moines if looking for amenities.
