Hotel Tabard Inn

Great location to downtown, white house, museums. No microwave nor refrigerator no TV. No drinks, ice or snacks in lobby. Only an expensive restaurant

The hotel is quaint, charming, and historic. That said, it is quite difficult to maneuver around with multiple stories, stairwells, and NO ELEVATOR. If you have any mobility issues, this is not the place for you. We had to schlep our bags from the curb, through the lobby and dining room, up 2 flights of narrow stairs. I kept getting lost due to the fact that the interior is a warren of levels and staircases. The staff is nice but clueless. They wanted to put us on the 3rd floor! We should have been told about the access issues before booking. We will never again book a place assuming it has an elevator because clearly some do not. A first floor room transfer helped a bit but it was still arduous to get to the room transversing the lobby, bar, and dining room all of which had stairs!

Great place! Nice staff. Good restaurant. Fair prices. No elevator so be aware if you have mobility issues.

Exceptional Staff, Exceptional Restaurant, nice neighborhood, Historic well kept property. Because it’s a historic building, you will have to climb stairs because there are no Elevators. Also, no TV in rooms.

They put our room on the fourth floor and we had to walk up three flights of stairs, carrying our luggage because there was no elevator. It was very conveniently located near the subway and many different venues.

No fitness center, no elevator, no TV.

They say paid parking is $26.00 but it is actually $30.68 because they have a 15% surcharge on credit cards. They were not helpful when I requested early check in…said a room was available but wanted to charge me $25.00 (not including the surcharge). The cheapest rooms have a shared bathroom down the hall. They offered to upgrade to a room with a bathroom but said it would be $100.00 extra. I said no, then they offered a room with a bathroom for $35.00 extra. Actually came out to $38.50 with their surcharge. No hot water when I took a shower the nite we checked. At breakfast I gave our server a $10.00 off coupon from the front desk. From that point on he was rude. Did not see him again until he dropped the bill off. We tipped 20% in cash on the total before the reduced amount. No thank you or anything. Just more rude service and asked if we had the coupon that I gave him at the beginning of the meal. The restaurant was the best part of the stay but the quality of food and staff was better at dinner compared to breakfast the next morning. The location is great for seeing sites in DC with a quick car ride. Probably would not stay a second time though. Rooms are a bit beat up and could use some remodeling. I did not appreciate the extra fees and them trying to get more money out of me again and again.

Historic bent to the property. No elevator. So a stay on the 4th floor makes you think twice about going down to the front desk, because there are no telephones. Nice hotel though.

Semi-handicapped. Didnt like being on the top floor without elevators. Had to ask for clean towels. Great restaraunt, dog friendly.

The breakfast wasn’t free, but you get a $10 disc coupon. Delicious. Great service. It’s an old building with no elevator access for those with difficulties. Place was beautiful. The o ly inconvenience is the parking. It was a block away and $30 per night. $50 for valet.

The first thing that was a huge turn off was going to the room through a bar and side service hallway. The hallway was very run down and dusty. When we opened the door to the room, an overwhelming smell of mold and dust overpowered us. There was no separate bathroom, the toilet was in the room, behind half opened wall. Next to it was a bathtub, stained and scratched. The was no way I was going to shower in it. The bed sheets looked clean but smelled of mold. For the price we paid- few hundred dollars- it was a disgrace. We checked out after 2 hours because we couldn't take the moldy smell. Had to get another hotel room.

I really want to like Tabbard Inn. I love the values, I love that it is historic, and the bar and restaurant is great. However, the rooms, particularly the bathrooms, really need some updating. And I had roaches in my room, unfortunately. And this is the third time this has happened in the past 6 months.

The staff was nice. The room was nice. It was nice until we came back to the hotel that evening. Two roaches in the bathroom. We kept the air conditioner on full blast. We turned it off for a few minutes and the roaches came out. I spoke to management about the roaches and they said they would refund our stay. Just pay for the dog fee. We paid for a roach motel. We couldn't even eat there for the fear that the roaches were in the food. Worst hotel we stayed at during our east coast road trip.

Well we left after one night despite being booked in and having paid for 3. Just because it’s an old property (for the US) there’s no excuse for the lack of comfort, care and cleanliness. My house in London is older than the Tabard and presented to a much higher standard of comfort and finish. Couldn’t bear to stay at the Inn. A few of the highlights: a musty smell, inadequate lighting to do make up, inadequate curtains and blinds, horribly uncomfortable beds, manky furniture, a carpet that a cat wouldn’t care to die on, filthy grouting in an out of date bathroom - we really tried to avoid going in there. We checked out ASAP. Horrible. Needs a lot of money spent on it to be habitable.

Absolutely stunned to see any positive reviews for this hotel. The staff was very nice and that is about all I can say that is positive. The building and rooms are in need of a deep gut renovation. The walls, doors, shower, and sinks are decrepit. There is rust on everything. The didn’t drain properly. The AC is a window unit. There is no sound barrier — in my room I could hear staff vacuuming the restaurant and cleaning and patrons talking and eating. The bedroom/bathroom was just dirty. Stains on sheets and towels. Uncomfortable bed. Dirty floors. Smelly hallways. Very strange decor / art. I’m sorry to say but this was, by far, the worst hotel I’ve stayed at… do not do it!

Window shatters were dusty, there was dirt on the table, sofa was a bit dirty, part of curtain was detached. More cleanliness would be desired.

Heater broke, mold in the bathroom, hot water in and out, mostly out.

The Inn was interesting with it's history. Although we did not eat there, the restaurant, bar and outside patio looked very quaint. The bed sheets were clean but there was black mold all along the bathroom tub seam. This is not to be expected for what we paid for a night at the inn. If we had not been exhausted from flying into DC and if other rooms with 2 beds were available, I would have requested a change of rooms. The street noise kept us awake until 3 am even though I had requested a quiet room. We will not return here.

Great historic property! Bartenders were great. Rooms spotless. Only complaint is room doors are loud when people close them

The hotel is very charming! I loved the history of the place! The restaurant/lounge was also awesome, you must try the Tabard donut! The only negative was how thin the walls are. I could hear the neighbors next door and the street noise was loud til about 1am.

Tabard Inn is in a great location! I'm glad we had a chance to stay there. I recommend it and would stay there again. The outside dining area is very quaint and relaxing. Bed was comfortable. My two comments are around the bathroom/shower: 1) it literally took 5 mins (we timed it) for the water in the shower to become warm/hot. We were on a top floor so maybe that had something to do with it? 2) the shower itself is not enclosed so water ends up all over the floor. We didn't want to slip on the floor post shower so we sopped up the water with towels.

The restaurant wasn’t open for dinner and it was extremely loud. You could hear the people in the rooms around you.

The hotel is very old but charming as long as you understand that there will be no TV and the bathrooms will be a bit tight, but our room was large and comfortable. Two blocks from lots of dining and close to many sights. The food we had at the hotel was excellent. Will visit again!

Quaint spot. Not bad for the age but beds were quite firm and uncomfortable. Room serviced and good towels, sheets etc.

Room was like a dormitory room. Pretty small and on the 3rd floor. Shared bathroom facilities. $10 voucher towards breakfast given.

Old charm is fine, however, people should be aware that rooms are creaky, have no TV's, no landlines in case of an emergency in the room, some bathrooms have drafts. Also, the rooms with a shared bathroom are not properly advertised, and some people are surprised when they arrive and find out their room has a shared bathroom. The day of my arrival, I got there late and was planning to just eat something at the hotel -not possible because of a private event- which was not communicated in advance.

Very cool building, quirky decor that makes the most of a historical building. The restaurant is atmospheric and the food / wine was great. A shortish walk to many interesting places, shops, museums. Only downside is that the internet seems to date from the 18th century ...

Loved the unique art throughout the property. All staff were so lovely, helpful and entertaining. A class act all around.

Although this lovely Victorian Inn is a landmark, guests should know that the structure has four floors but no elevator and no phones or televisions in the guest rooms. The front desk ,and for that matter, the entire staff in the hotel and the restaurant are EXCEPTIONAL.

This was my second stay at the Tabard Inn. Check-in was easy, and there is someone at the desk at all times. The property is very cool, with a very eclectic style. Each room is unique. The keys have wooden blocks with the room numbers, and they recommend that you leave them at the front desk when you are out. I love this, so I don't have to worry about losing them. During this stay we had an issue upon arrival with the lock for our room, but the staff were quick to assist us. They even offered us a glass of wine for our troubles while they worked out the issue. Maintenance was able to replace the lock while we were in the restaurant for breakfast the next morning. The hotel provided a $10 voucher towards our meal for each of the days that we were staying there. We have eaten there for breakfast, lunch and dinner and are always very pleased with our choices. The staff in both the hotel, as well as the restaurant, were always friendly and attentive. They have both valet and self-park available. We chose the self-parking option, so we dropped off our luggage with the staff and picked up our pass for the garage at that time. The garage is very close. The location is perfect and close to many landmarks. I would note that there are no elevators, so if stairs are an issue, I would check with the hotel before booking. I highly recommend the Tabard Inn.

Great unique property with cool art and history of the building ! Stayed in a penthouse and couldn’t have been more happier with it ! But employees could have been nicer . front desk as it should be greeting and accommodating, had to experience attitude from one lady, and a gentleman who ignored me begging to check in me a little earlier if room was ready due to my horrible red eye flight where I I was suppose to sit in the lobby from 9 am till 3 pm . Room was ready . Everything else was great and food in the restaurant amazing !

I think the Tabard Inn was beautiful, unique and was in a great spot in DC. I loved the room, the restaurant and (specifically the restaurants service), the charming homey feel it gave. But I was disappointed with the service unfortunately. I called earlier in the morning asking if it was possible to have an early check in, they responded with a vague we cannot guarantee you an early check in. I understood and left my number in case they could. We got there early and were able to drop off our bags and store them. The woman who was at the front desk initially came off a bit cold when getting help with our bags and parking. Like we were inconveniencing her. My girlfriend and I then went to a museum while we waited to check in, at 2:30 (check in was at 3) someone from the hotel called and said we could have early check in now if we wanted and it was a $25 charge if wanted it… when we called in the morning no one told us there would be a charge if we wanted early check in. We declined the “early” check in offer and got situated when we were done at the museum. To improve, they should definitely be informing people of a potential additional fee from the get go, not when the early check in is available. It would save them a future call. Also being friendlier would be helpful. If we’re in DC we’ll definitely be there again for the hotel itself, hopefully the service will be better but we’ll plan for not checking in early.

This is one of those reviews that I will struggle with. The staff was amazing. I was even stuck overnight in another city due to weather and they didn't charge me for that evening when I arrived the next day. Big chains would never do that. And had a wonderful cocktail at the bar and a great dinner at the restaurant, which is known for being excellent. The room itself was a bit odd. Very large with a sitting area but very old world, including beds. Tiny tiny bathroom and a walk in closet with no lights. The outer door to hallway was a pocket door, but it did lock. And really dirty carpet in public walkways. What I would say is that I could have hosted my own murder mystery dinner in my room! ha. Again, great service, but just an unusual stay experience.

The lady at 'early' check-in on 16 July was excellent in supporting me as I wanted to leave my luggage on way to museums. I am sorry i didn't catch her name. Wait staff at lunch on 18 July was excellent! My salad with added warm grilled chicken was superb! Thank you everyone!

Very interesting unique design of the hotel. Gives nice vibes. Has a restaurant inside. Looks very good, cannot comment about food since we didn’t use it. Not very convenient if your room is on the 4th floor since they don’t have an elevator. Also limited number of plugs in the room. Needed to unplug a lamp to charge the phone. Loved the location. Close to metro stations. Plus 25 minutes walking distance from the White House. Would return

This is an historic property with a wonderful restaurant and bar, cozy reading room with a fireplace, and conveniently located to Dupont Circle and walkable to the national mall/museums. Would stay here again!

I really liked the historic features of the property and the old-fashioned furniture. Even a claw foot tub, updated with a very nice shower! I was a little surprised at no tv, but since I don’t watch tv it was no loss—there is internet. The location and convenience of the Metro is key. Thank you.

This is a very well-located hotel near Dupont Circle and also the White House, Eisenhower Executive Office Building and the Renwick Gallery among other sights. Very charming and good food, drinks.

A very special place - historical charm in the structure and surrounds, meaningfully appointed throughout with interesting and sophisticated artwork, made my partner feel special on his birthday... A very good restaurant with equally enjoyable surroundings. A most unique and special place to stay. I can't imagine coming back to D.C. and not staying at Tabard Inn!

I would hands down recommend the Tabard Inn to anyone traveling to DC. It has history, charm, a friendly and accommodating staff, and a great dining experience. We had breakfast at the restaurant during our stay, and the service was great, with a fun outdoor/patio area and delicious food. I wish we could have stayed longer!

Loved the hotel and it's unique history, people should know that there is not a tv in the room, at least not in the one I stayed in which was fine with me. The bar snd restaurant were fantastic. Best kale salad I ever had.

Though I'm not a huge fan of "Victorian / Art Nouveau" they manage to make it charming and quirky at the same time. I adore the rooms with the huge club foot bathtubs, the scale and coziness of the main rooms. Giving guests a $10.00 voucher to the restaurant is a great incentive to eat in a very enjoyable and appetizing restaurant. So many wonderful things to say about Tabard! I loved it for staycations when I lived in Washington and enjoy it now when I get to visit. Thanks!

Tabard Inn is a charming, historic inn with approximately 32 rooms. The rooms are individually furnished and very whimsical and eclectic. I loved the decor of my room, room 5. Sadly, it looked out over the inn's HVAC system and a small parking lot so I kept my curtains drawn for my one night stay. The restaurant is very popular in the Dupont Circle neighborhood and serves excellent new American cuisine. I live in DC and have visited the restaurant a few times over the decades. Was always intrigued by the inn and said I would stay there one day. I plan to return to the hotel--will simply request a room with a view. Highly recommend for those who appreciate intimate and quirky.

Fabulous old period hotel and restaurant. We were pleased with the price and a room was big. No TV, but that wasn’t a problem. Quiet. Nice bathroom. Food was fantastic. I especially like the biscuits at breakfast.

Had a great stay at the Tabard Inn on a recent business trip to DC! I really enjoyed the old style of the building, eclectic decor, and artwork. Dining at the restaurant each night and for breakfast in the morning was very convenient and the meals were excellent! Highly recommend if you are looking for a different kind of stay in the city!
