Chalfonte Hotel

Fabulous restaurant on site, open for breakfast and dinner. Close to tourist attractions and parks. The hotel building is 150 years old, so some modern conveniences are absent. No wheelchair accommodations (stairs everywhere), no fridge or microwave, ungrounded two-prong electrical outlets, separate taps for hot and cold water. Music next door most evenings is loud, but stops by 10pm. No staff at the front desk overnight until 7 am. Street parking only, prepare to park several blocks away.

Victorian hotel. Our room had a private toilet and shower with the sink in the room. Other room share bathroom facilities, ask the hotel before booking. Breakfast very good. 5 minutes walk to beach5-20 minutes walk to shopping. Parking on street, we got lucky to get fairly close. Staff excellent. Thursday night music on the porch/lawn, get there early!

We have been traveling to cape may for decades. The Chalfonte staff was THE NICEST staff we have ever encountered. The room was perfect for us, and we were far enough away that we went to bed early and were unbothered by the music playing late into the night. The BEST part was the beach chairs and umbrellas that you get set up for you on the beach for being a Chalfonte guest. This was a perfect get away and we loved everything about Chalfonte!

Vintage property with cool public spaces. Live music featuring very talented rhythm and blues. Restaurant is convenient. I was lucky with street parking and the beach umbrella and lounge chairs are a plus. The front desk was super helpful. They brought my bags up to my 3rd floor room. If you like the vintage feel this place a good choice. I will book here again.

Beautiful historical hotel with excellent accommodations and staff. Unfortunately area parking is limited, no TVs and shared bathrooms for some units. Additionally no elevator. Breakfast is served for a fee and live music on most days. Beautiful lounges, dining room and porches. Excellent place.

Our dining experience was terrible. We were guests at the Chalfonte and had a dinner reservation for 5:30. There was a wedding celebration of approximately 80 guests on the porch. Management should not have seated us on the porch during their cocktail hour. The noise was unbearable between the wedding guests & the beer bottles being tossed into the bussing bucket behind the bar. We could not hear each other talk no less have a conversation. What started out as a lovely stay was ruined Because of our dining experience..the manager wanted to Move us a couple of tables away with our food on our plates which was half eaten…Not Happy!!

Very clean room in a beautiful, historic property with lots of small gathering spaces inside and beautiful verandas to sit on. 2 short blocks to the beach and daily pass for free beach chairs and umbrella. A/C was strong and cold in the bedroom, fantastic after a hot day at the beach. Lovely restaurant with indoor dining room and outside dining on the veranda. Breakfast (not free, but not crazy expensive) was outstanding. Short walk to downtown Cape May. I'd definitely stay there again!

Cute historic hotel, friendly staff and good location. Room wasn’t clean, there was a pair of crumpled up pants and a partially rolled up rug under the bed. The toilet needed scrubbing. Noisy mechanical sounds every 10 minutes.

It’s a lovely historic hotel. Our stay was great. The staff is very hospitable and friendly. The rooms are very clean.

Very old, historic property that has its charms however is in desperate need of some upgrades. The main restrooms for restaurant and lobby were pretty gross and probably haven’t been touched in decades. Definitely would avoid third floor rooms as the ac cannot handle the need. Restaurant meals good as was the service. Would recommend with caveats.

Would not recommend this to anyone. The staircase (no elevator) is far too steep and narrow to be considered safe. Our room was very dirty with chipping paint and cobwebs all over the ceiling. Walls very thin, we could hear the family next to us crystal clear. And the very loud bar just below our room made for sleeping impossible.

Wonderful stay, the room was super clean! The chalfonte is right within walking distance of everything in Cape May. Affordable rooms and great location!

Not sure this hotel is worth it. I emailed the hotel with a complaint and received nothing back. I am extremely disappointed with my stay. The room was ok. However, housekeeping never cleaned the bathroom during our stay or provide fresh towels even when we left them piled. On top of this, at checkout a front young women at the front desk (bun and headband) gave me an attitude because I inquired about a $20 charge on the room from the bar. No one from my room went to the bar. We weren’t even on the premises when the room was charged. I asked her for a receipt after she dismissed me and said “I’ll look into it”. I asked if they checked keys too before charging a room and she rudely replied “I wasn’t charging you anyways” in an even ruder tone. I did not feel welcome by this front desk attendant and other guests saw this interaction and also seemed uneasy about this. I am very disappointed that a stay at a sought out historic hotel ended on such bad terms. I truly hope this attendants behavior is not a reoccurrence or one defined by the demographics of who she is speaking to.

Very quiet and clean. I’m picky with bathrooms and this one was absolutely perfect, clean shower no odd grime or dirt. The floors were also very clean. I always bring slippers because some hotels leave your feet dusty/dirty but this time I didn’t need them.

Beautiful exterior of the hotel and loved the historic aspect. Lovely bar and the breakfast we had was amazing! Highly recommend the pancakes! Only downside was the walls are REALLY thin. Would probably request to be on an upper floor if possible in the future!

The room was nice and very clean, only downside is the poor wi-fi signal stregth so much so that my mobil network was faster and the remote for the cable hooked up to tv wasn't connected to work the volume or power on/off the tv so I had to get up each time to do so.

Victorian era hotel with some modern amenities. Pros: - The staff were friendly and accommodating. - Loved the complimentary beach equipment rental - and cleanliness. Cons: - Lights flickered and - wifi did not work in our room. - At some point during our stay, the water dispenser in the lobby broke and was not replaced.

The room was clean upon arrival. They definitely need to invest in some updated heating options though. Our room was between 51-55 degrees the entire time. It should not be that cold in there.

Overall run down. There is only air conditioning ( window units) in the rooms. Boiling hot in lobby and hallways. Run by kids. I will not return to this hotel. Although I e block from the beach. The air conditioning unit had trouble keeping the room cold. The bathroom was hot because of poor air conditioning

The chalfonte is a gorgeous old Victorian building with a gorgeous porch. We were put in the southern quarters which was also nice and had charm, however it feels excluded from the main building. The walls are very thin, and the entrance to the hotel was right next to our room. So the screen door was constantly slamming. The guests were very loud Friday night before the wedding. They were up until 3:30 am yelling, fighting, crying, slamming doors. It was ridiculous. Their voices radiated through the air conditioner vent. Needless to say, I barely got any sleep. There was no water provided. There was a water jug but it was empty the whole time. I wasn’t told about any ice or amenities, so if there were any, I wouldn’t have known. The bar and staff were extremely nice. The drinks were very well prepared. The thing about the bar, is that everyone sits on the porch and are very loud. This is also a wedding venue, so keep that in mind. Guests are loud. So, if you want to go to sleep early, you are out of luck. I had to sleep with ear plugs in, but that was mainly because of the loud drunk guests above us. Even though the porch was loud, it did seem to quiet down by midnight. There was no parking or tv as the hotel does say. We had no trouble finding parking very close by. The bed was comfortable. You do have to share the ac with the three rooms on your floor. So that may not be to your liking. The location is great. I’m not sure I would stay again, based mostly on the noise.

Our stay was very nice, everything was exactly what we wanted. Our only complaint is that since there is a bar attached to the property, it got a bit noisy at night. Would stay again, though!

Very thin walls, rug in room was covered in sand, ceiling fan was on with no way to turn it off the whole trip. Could hear the room next to us being intimate every night and they were not loud

Lovely hotel. I enjoyed the ambiance and the staff's hospitality.

We stayed here for two nights and enjoyed everything about it. We weren’t in the main hotel but in the “southern” house, which seemed to be a little quieter. Check in was very easy and McKenna escorted us to our building/room. She was extremely friendly and helpful when we couldn’t get our tv to work properly. The rooms are small but clean and can’t be beat for the price! The location is ideal! We walked to the Jazz festival, shopping and to several restaurants. Will def recommend!

Booked this Hotel with the understanding that we would be staying in the Hotel. The morning of arrival, we were notified by phone that we would not be staying there but next to it at an alternate building. It was adequate but not what was paid for or explained to us when we booked it. Very questionable Business practices. Would not recommend.

We enjoyed the Victorian-era design and charm of the Chalfonte, especially the wrap-around balcony with rocking chairs and tables. It was an easy walk from the hotel to the Convention Center and the beach.

Lovely stay in lovely Cape May. The Chalfonte has the best location- such an easy walk to Washington Mall and the beach/boardwalk. Finding street parking was a challenge, but we just tried not to move our car much and didn’t have to since we could walk to so many places. The room was perfectly clean, though somewhat outdated, especially the hallway areas. We did hear some noise from nearby rooms and outside, but nothing unbearable. A mini fridge and microwave in each room would be a great addition.

This is a beautiful Victorian property full of classic charm. Its location is convenient to multiple options such as dining, shopping and beach time. The staff was wonderful.

Great old fashioned building with many historical touches. Great location, easy walk to downtown and the beach. Only on-street parking is available and it is tight. Room was smaller than some newer hotels but was clean with modern fixtures. No in room fridge, which would have been nice. Had breakfast twice in the hotel restaurant, limited selection but the omlets were fluffy and delicious.

air conditioning as basic amenity. no TV/mini fridge/microwave in rooms. convenient to the mall and the beach but no direct view. while we enjoyed the historic hotel overall, was not quite a fan of all the stairs to the rooms and lack of dependable nearby (free) parking, especially with all the scheduled events/weddings at the hotel. On a positive note, dinner at the magnolia room restaurant was amazing. fried chicken was most definitely worth the hype.

We chose a room based on a photo during the reservation but the room turned out to have a different configuration. The room was comfortable. Good a/c. We had to evacuate one night at10:50pm due to fire alarm but fire dept personnel let us back in a half hour or so later. Self serve water and coffee are available downstairs everyday. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays. Hotel is a few blocks from the beach, restaurants and the Washington st mall, so good location if you don’t mind walking a little.

Stayed 3 nights for a quick getaway. The hotel staff were extremely accommodating and courteous. The restaurant food was delicious. Just sitting and relaxing while readng my book on the large front porch every night while listening to the live music wafting from the bar area and the waves crashing on the beach was well worth the trip. It was close to everything - 2 minute walk to the beach and 10 minute walk to shopping and alternate dining experiences. They even had umbrellas and beach chairs set up on the beach for their guests. Will definately return
