Great view from the balcony. Has a lot of character. Restaurant is closed. No elevator if you’re in need of one. They are remodeling in September. Will stay again after remodeling is completed. Great little town. Beach within walking distance. Overall a great experience.

Worst hotel we’ve ever stayed in 4 decades of travel. Falling apart, worn out, rusty and dirty.

The Mendocino Hotel is located on Main St in Mendocino, though the big old building is closed (as are all the restaurants and anything but the front desk). Very light on services (keurig coffee in rooms and lobby, couldn't find more than one key for our room) but the rooms are comfortable and the location great. Can walk along the coast and down to a beach. Parking available for the rooms separate from the main building--about a block away. Good price, especially given the location.

This hotel is hanging on by as thread. The main building is completely shut down apart from checking in and getting a coffee from an urn. No restaurant and no bar. Very sad.

I liked the old time atmosphere. It will be closing soon for much needed refurbishment. The restaurant was closed.

Restaurant/ have been closed since 2020 which is not mentioned online and was a disappointment. One of the porch access doors couldn't be locked.

It's a lovely historic hotel in a beautiful setting in the small town of Mendocino. Unfortunately, the restaurant and bar on the property have been closed since the COVID pandemic. There are several options in town though.

Large room, with fireplace. Closing for renovations under new ownership. Clean, newer bathroom. Large closet, Close parking. Lobby smelled or marijuana every time (3) I was there. No bar or restaurant on site, but close by options were good, varied, and numerous. I will return after renovations are complete.,

The Mendocino Hotel used to be outstanding. Great restaurant, quant rooms. Restaurant and bar are closed now. Lobby was dark and uninviting.. We waited 10 minutes for a staff person to check us in. The room was shabby-holes in the wall, frayed lampshade. Flimsy blanket. It needs a major facelist. Don't go. At $240 a night it was a total rip-off.

The view was outstanding. There are walking paths near the water. Our desk assistant recommended a great place to eat. The hotel is from 1878 and has all that charm. The lobby and bar (which is closed) has beautiful woodwork. The property is under new owners and they are planning a renovation. I hope they maintain the look and feel of an old inn.

Old carpets everywhere. Smelled very bad. It is 1900 built hotel. Location is good across the ocean and walking distance to all resturants.

Room smelled bad. Holes in wall, light fixtures falling off wall, bug wings on my pillow. Old building which is the idea and a neat idea, but needs some tlc.

Beautiful historic hotel in a safe and walkable town. Very clean and comfortable, the only downside is the room got a little stuffy but i had a fan that took care of the problem. I would definitely come again.

I hesitate to give a bad review to a long-time Mendocino property, but the price for this room was NOT warranted by the conditions of the room. The decor was horribly outdated--think a 1970's version of "Victorian". This means plum pink wallpaper, red and orange striped drapes and a red and pink flowered carpet! Beyond that, the room and entry way was not clean nor in good condition. The window seat outside my entry had a dirty cushion and torn curtains. The armchair had something milky white spilled down the side and not cleaned up. The bathroom sink had a long hair in it. The elderly sofa had sunken cushions. The TV had 4 channels, no cable. I will say that my bed linens were clean (thankfully or I would not have stayed!) as were the towels and the mattress was comfortable. You will have to do a major hop and scramble to get up on the high bed, and I am tall, so it would be nice to add a little stair step to mount the bed. I might not complain as much, but this room was REALLY expensive. Really expensive for what we got. No breakfast included. The location is good for walking around town, but in future, I will be looking for one of the cabins just outside town, or a small house rental, as the price won't be any higher and I know they will be cleaner and more comfortable. Mendocino Hotel, I hope that you can make some upgrades to bring the property up to more modern standards and stay relevant to modern visitors.

This hotel needs some love. It was okay but nothing special (even though it should be, given its historic nature.) I did hear that they are going to close for a year for renovations starting in July. The main hotel lobby is beautiful and original, but dusty/could use a good cleaning (floors, furniture). The hotel is actually several different buildings so I can't speak to the quality of the rooms in the main building. Our room in a building a block up was just ok. It could use fresh paint, a new mattress and new bedding (one thin blanket and two flat pillows). It was clean enough (it didn't give me the willies) but really in need of updating/refreshing. We didn't pay a lot for two nights so that helped make up for it. The hotel could be a real gem, I imagine the pandemic was probably not very good for business. I hope they can bring it back to life!

The hotel is historic and old. The room was not in the best condition, but still clean. The bed was comfortable and big. The bar and restaurant was closed, but it is in a great location in downtown Mendocino where there are plenty of other options. It is so easy to walk around and also walk to the beach or on that beautiful trail on the cliffs. I was told that the hotel will be renovated soon. So it might close for a while. It is an amazing place with beautiful gardens but it definitely need renovating. So I look forward to come back after the work is done. But it might be more expensive then!?

Staff was very friendly and helpful, but the facilty was run down, neglected, and in poor condition. Our room was dirty and in poor condition.

Very Nice location and friendly front desk staff. The Mendocino Hotel has lost its luster an is badly in need of an upgrade. We stayed in a garden suite which had a strong moldy smell, it was very cold and had no thermostat, only a portable heater; we brought some food from a restaurant, left if out for a couple of hours and when we went to eat it it was full of ants. This used to be a wonderful hotel, unfortunately it no longer is.

The room was clean. But the overall property and garden suites are shabby and poorly maintained. Peeling wallpaper, cracked bathroom tile, old paint, mismatched linens. It gives off an air of a ‘once was’ lovely facility. Disappointing that the bar and restaurant are closed in mid summer well past Covid. There’s even a broken window in the main entrance and there is no encouragement to sit in the area and enjoy the hotel at all. For the cost we were very disappointed. However, the two staff I encountered were friendly and polite and the room was quiet. The bedding was very very thin, nothing luxurious about it.

Pros: Spectacular location and view from the front porch. Cool old building. Cons: Terrible condition, creaky windows and shower door, no (NONE) room cleaning over three nights, skunk infestation under the building. It feels like nobody cares. At Motel 6 rates I’d be fine. At the price we paid ($223/night plus tax) it’s a complete ripoff regardless of location and holiday weekend.

Old hotel in smalll town Mendocino, was suitable for the night. Please note this hotel has many rooms with no bathroom, you go down the hall to shared bathrooms. This was fine for me for one night but may not suit all travelers.

For what we paid, what we got was pretty average to below average in my opinion because I've paid similar prices for better rooms before. Bed was uncomfortable and room was very small, barely able to move around the room without tripping over luggage or furniture.

The property is gorgeous, but the bed felt like I was sleeping on a piece of lumber. My daughter's bed was equally "firm" with the added feature of a permanent indentation in the center that she could not escape.

Pros:Early check in no extra cost a plus. Beach right across the street and shops/stores walking distance. Historic. staff friendly. Cons: no bathroom in room. Shared with other guests. stairs no elevator. squeaky bed. shared balcony right outside our room window for guests to hang out. Room size small. Just enough for bed, sink only no bathroom and dresser. No air conditioning. Decided not to stay, no questions asked just took our key.

The place is adorable but the bed was terrible; please get new mattresses!

We stayed overnight in one of the ocean view units with a private bath. It was a cute and clean room. We loved the view. The hotel needs some repair and renovation, but it’s charming and very convenient to everything. Parking was easy. Mendocino is a pretty, peaceful, fun little town. Hope to come back in the next year or so.

Very unique place! Decor (and other things) makes you feel like you are in an old west hotel from the 1800's. Room I stayed in was tiny - just room for a bed, a sink, and a tiny closet. Was certainly adequate though as I came to spend time outdoors and not in my room. 4 lovely bathrooms with shower/tub, sink, and toilet were just steps away down the hall. Soap and shampoo, etc. were in the mirror cabinet in my room. Room had doors that opened onto a balcony that went all around the hotel. The room was a bit chilly, but I slept just fine using the extra blanket provided and the white bathrobe in the closet. I think there is electric heat in the room that is controlled by a thermostat dial by the door. I wasn't certain this worked until the next morning. The bed was fairly comfortable apparently with old-fashioned squeaky springs. The only thing I didnt like was the fact that my room was next to the bar in the adjacent building. Was a little noisy, but I still got to sleep OK.

Premium suite had great ocean views, but room was a dated Victorian and a bit run down.

Walked in the main lobby and it smelled like weed and an old musty brothel. Our room didn’t have a bathroom and had to share with guest on same floor. I was unaware of this when booking and probably would not have chosen this location. Also, the mattress was very uncomfortable. On a positive note, The view from the upstairs porch was lovely and had dinner at a fabulous Italian restaurant down the street.

The hotel claims to be 3 stars!! Costs $170!! And the room has no toilet or bathroom!!! How is that even possible??? When asked, “show us the room,” a very rude woman replied, “no, either take it or leave!” I definitely do not recommend staying in such a place! For $130 you can book a hotel two miles away with full amenities and excellent service! Which is exactly what we did!

Jamie at the front desk is wonderful! We love this hotel- and have stayed here many times! It is so beautiful. The antiques, woodwork and rooms are amazing. The location is perfect- right in the center of the Main Street looking out at the ocean. One of our favorite places anywhere!!

Staff was friendly, attentive and helpful. We had a noisy toddler in the room above us, interfering with our sleep and the desk manager quickly had us moved to another room. The location right on Main street is great for views of the ocean and an easy walk to restaurants and shops. It's a grand historic building with fine architectural details if that's your thing too.

Despite the hotel being practically empty, they put us in a room in the annex with creepy haunted children photos on the walls (all good, easily covered with towels). But our toilet ran constantly, the fan didn't work in our bathroom so we had to keep the door open, and they don't regularly change the batteries on their smoke detector so it BEEEEEPED at one minute intervals all night long. Seriously, every minute, on the minute from 11pm until the next morning. No sleep was had. When I mentioned to the front desk lady in the morning, she was great about it and offered a refund. But she told me I'd have to initiate through Expedia, then they would call the hotel and the hotel would confirm. Well, I did that. But when Expedia called the hotel they refused the refund, even with several tries. Mendocino is an adorable town, but stay elsewhere.

The staff especially Angel was amazing. They really made this stay great. The Mendocino area is wonderful and the hotel was centrally located and perfect for visiting.

We were disappointed that we weren’t made aware that there was no longer a restaurant / bar open on site. The young man that checked us was very courteous and kind to us. He made us feel welcome. The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean. It was sad to see a once beautiful hotel almost shut down. Probably won’t stay there again until up and running full scale again.

I like the Victorian decor and outdoor garden of the hotel, however, the check-in experience was horrible. The guy at the check-in counter appeared to be very inexperienced. He gave us a room with only one key. The other was somehow unavailable. When we opened the door of the room, we found that it was already occupied with clothing and shoes laying around. We exited the room and asked for another one. He did not know the original room was occupied. We got another room with two double beds for our family of three, but the hotel agreement said we should have a superior room with one king bed and two double beds. He said no such room existed. We had never had such experience of being given an occupied hotel room before. This might lead not only to an embarrassing situation, but a potentially dangerous one. If we ran into the occupant of the room who had a gun, we might even be shot at. We counted ourselves lucky that this did not happen.

Would definitely stay here again. A tad funky, but in a chic kind of way. This is NOT a chain hotel, so don't expect that. It is clean, roomy, historic, has great employees, and located in one of the most beautifully quaint, coastal towns on the California coast. When you go, please take time to walk to the Mendocino Headlands, and then stop by Patterson's Pub and grab a pizza at Frankies. A great place to treat yourself to a few days of self-care. Cheers!

Our room overlooked the bay. Fresh coffee and tea downstairs. Safe walk around town and the coastline. The very rugged coast didn’t disappoint. We saw so many seals in the water - very cool to see.

A nice, clean room in the downtown area of Mendocino. Could walk to everything in the historic town.

Impressive old-world charm was exactly what drew me to this venue and it did not disappoint! I was there for the Mendocino Music Festival—which was right across the street. Rock-star parking, friendly service, and breathtaking coastal porch-deck, views made for a lovely visit.

This property is in the center of Mendocino restaurant and bars are in walking distance.

Unfortunately, the restaurant and popular bar are closed. However instead of a sign that everything is closed - would be better to promote nearby McCullom House restaurant. Short walk through an alleyway. Enjoyed overall. Look forward to return of the restaurant.

We only stayed one night on a family road trip. Our two double beds room was not in the main building facing the ocean but two streets away, which was not clear at booking. We did not expect a room with ocean view but was disappointed about the location. Room needs renovation. Wall paper and sitting chair torn with holes. Beds extremely squeaky, one of them unstable. Below 3 star standard. Restaurant and bar closed. We had great breakfast and coffee at the nearby Goodlife Café & Bakery. The hotel has great potential with its amazing location but needs major renovation.
