Staff is over the top. Friendly. Hotel is older but well maintained. Secure. Bed comfortable. Beautiful pool and garden areas. They have a bar and restaurant also. Free coffee and in the morning free pastries.

The pool and entire pool area is very nice. The room had good vibes and king bed was super comfortable. The water pressure in shower was awesome! Staff was friendly and courteous. We were disappointed the restaurant wasn't open on Wednesday for dinner (we were told only open Thursday to Sunday and only for dinner). The restaurant at hotel was one of the reasons we chose it. The website and other booking sites should state that. It put a wrench in our schedule. Bummed there wasn't a free continental type breakfast available. That would be a nice touch. There was also major construction that started at 7 a.m. Crazy loud! Not enjoyable to wake up to that especially after a late night out and a vacation day to sleep in. Not hotel's fault clearly but guests should be informed upon check-in if they are aware of it and have witnessed it for a few days.

the staff was very friendly but the actual property does not reflect the pictures. the pictures made me feel like it was very Ace Hotel vibes but it was basically a run down motel with good pictures. the bathrooms and furniture are really poorly kept, stains on the wall/i was going to change hotels because it was so bad/creepy but ended up staying due to the short stay.

No cleaning service in the room for short stays. Blinds that do not close properly. When you enter there is a bunch of flies and smells like trash.There was a rat in the pool area. Also, the area is full of junkies and homeless people.

I have stayed in a lot of Hotels, and felt particularly safe and welcomed here! The red lighting is extremely cool and romantic, and the pool is VERY lovely even in the rain! The staff are extremely friendly and welcoming! Only complaint is there is not a fridge or microwave! Otherwise, INCREDIBLE! Would definitely stay here again!

It was an okay facility. Reading the reviews (when we booked the room), many of them spoke of the "vibe" the facility. There was definitely a 60's/rock-n-roll vibe to the facility. The room next to ours was noisy until near midnight - for some reason they keep opening/shutting their door, was a little disturbing. Our room had red colored fluorescent lights over the the headboard, which were connected to light switch as you entered the room. I use a CPAP machine to sleep, and there was only one plug-in by the bed. To keep my machine operating, we couldn't turn off the power to the light over our bed, that also was annoying. The staff was very pleasant. Don't know if I would stay here again.

Nice spot to stay - unique vibes. Staff were excellent. Beds and room were clean. Bathrooms outdated, paint peeling off tiles. Walls looked a bit dirty. Overall, good stay for the price. Does get a bit noisy but we didn't mind it.

The phoenix hotel is super cute, the staff was friendly and the room was clean. It was unusually hot in San Fran during our stay and theres no air conditioning in the rooms so we had to leave our door open for awhile to make the room comfortable. Otherwise 10/10

If the rooms were updated with new windows and a cooling system, the stay would have been much better. Instead, we had to crank open all of the louvre windows for any kind of cooling. We sweat the whole night using just a sheet, and we got zero sleep from windows being open.

The staff are super friendly. It had private parking which was nice. However, the area is very noisy. Very loud sirens all night, screaming all night from transient homeless people. The room did not have windows that actually shut. They were glass mini louvers that always were kind of open, the room was decent and clean nothing special but I guess the hotels icon so that says something

The hotel itself is almost like a little oasis from the piss soaked streets surrounding it. It was super convenient to lots of great restaurants and coffee/pastry shops. If you want quiet, and privacy, maybe choose elsewhere. The rooms all have a large window, that lets in all noise. Often could hear people's conversations outside. Was nearly impossible to close the curtain all the way. Also the door didn't close unless forced. Was mostly quiet the first night, other than the sirens passing by, but they started setting up for a concert in the courtyard the second night. The concert didn't start till the following afternoon, but they were moving around huge bar carts, and making loud thudding sounds, consistently, till about 1am. Not sure why that wasn't done during day hours. Pretty sure we were not the only guests trying to get sleep. Functional room, otherwise. Nice that they have a pool and lounge there, although we never used them. I'd stay again, if there's no events happening. The nearby restaurants made it worth it.

The staff was absolutely wonderful! They all really went above & beyond to make our stay enjoyable. The environment is very welcoming and different than any other hotels. The drinks at the restaurant were also fantastic. I would definitely stay here again.

Tenderloin gem! Had never stayed here before and didn't realize where it was located when I booked the hotel; however, I needed to be close to the courthouse. Like Cheers, every member of the staff took the time to know our names, give history about the area, and went out of their way to be of service and friendly. The only thing that I am disappointed about is the restaurant was closed while we were there. Despite its closure, we were permitted to take a tour of it and it is amazing! There is the most insane vinyl collection that lines the walls, overlooks the pool, and has multiple bars. This location has a retro feel that is a vibe all on its own. I will be back!

The hotel is what it is; an aging, somewhat past-its-prime monument to quirkiness. The high rating I am giving is in spite of the dirty and clamorous neighborhood. It is because the people who work there were tremendous to me. Gregory, Orlando, among others were quick with recommendations. This allowed me the courage to check out some terrific places in the Tenderloin for food that I wouldn’t have found otherwise. The beds were very comfortable. The shower was hot, there is good coffee and pastry nearby. I worked a lot, so I needed a place to sleep. The red neon lights in the room were…interesting. The hotel is what it is; an aging, somewhat past-its-prime monument to quirkiness. The high rating I am giving is in spite of the dirty and clamorous neighborhood. It is because the people who work there were tremendous to me. Gregory, Orlando, among others were quick with recommendations. This allowed me the courage to check out some terrific places in the Tenderloin for food that I wouldn’t have found otherwise. The beds were very comfortable. The shower was hot, there is good coffee and pastry nearby. I worked a lot, so I needed a place to sleep. The red neon lights in the room were…interesting. Hands down my favorite place to stay in the city. Every aspect was awesome. The front desk (Orlando) was extremely helpful. We will absolutely be back, and I’m getting a robe next time.

The front facing customer service, Augie and Orlando are amazing; you feel like you’re staying at a families home and they make you feel welcome from beginning to end. Charming and cool beyond words. Restaurant is amazing on site and steps away from the best New Orlean’s soul food brunch we’ve ever had!

You’ll be a bit surprised when you arrive. The area is gritty, to put it mildly, but pretty safe. And some good restaurants around. The attraction is that it’s everything corporate hotels aren’t. A really old style motel in the last place you’d expect to find one. Unbelievably friendly and helpful staff, delightful pool area. Terrific restaurant apparently (closed when I was there) Comfortable beds, super clean. Loved it and will be back. Possibly not a great area for kids. There are sights on the street you won’t want them to see. And can be noisy, both boisterous rock band guests, fire truck sirens and other unearthly sounds of lord knows what.

The Phoenix has a neat 60s vibe and a cool history with guests such as Nirvana and David Bowie, but unfortunately the location nowadays is super sketchy. It's surrounded by struggling people that can make walking around uncomfortable. That's a shame because the central location is excellent.

While the hotel is not in the safest part of SF, I never felt unsafe and it is certainly a great central location with access to all the tourist spots you want to visit. As with all big cities, keep your head up and whits about you while walking around. The staff at Phoenix were amazing! Super accommodating and so welcoming. Shout out especially to James. My only “complaint” is wishing there was a mini fridge in the room. We had some amazing meals with leftovers I would have liked to enjoy. My guess is it has to do with electrical capacity given the age of the property as a renovated retro hotel. Overall it was great, and I would definitely stay there again.

When we checked in the hotel staff was very friendly. We liked the retro setting of the hotel. It isn’t in the best neighborhood but it it centrally located to everything that we wanted to see. There were some great eating places within walking distance. There is a large homeless population but this is normally in large cities. We didn’t have any issues with the homeless and we felt secure in this hotel.

Nicely designed property, friendly staff, nice rooms, comfortable bed. Daily housekeeping was not guaranteed and dependent on workload of staff (very odd) and had to be arranged. Most of surrounding neighborhood was dirty, lots of homeless people and sketchy characters. Pretty depressing. Limited nice restaurants.

No issues with the hotel, gets a lot of use so bit tired in areas but to be expected. Staff were excellent, really friendly and gave good advice re parking etc. Immediate vicinity around the hotel as plenty of homeless, though not an issue at the hotel whatsoever and no fault of the hotel. Friendly and helpful staff, heated pool, unique decor. The location is both great and terrible. It's close to tons of stuff, with some fantastic restaurants close by, and was quite good as a base for Folsom weekend. But the area also has tons of homeless people and is just plain sketchy. I would not feel safe walking around after midnight, and I have a high tolerance for that sort of thing. But that's what you get in this part of SF.

Nice retro decorated hotel. Friendly, helpful staff! Room was comfortable and clean. Neighborhood seemed a bit sketch, but hotel felt safe. Also, there may have been a curfew for businesses in the tenderloin neighborhood, as everything was closed by 10 PM, which is not the hotel’s fault. I would stay again.

Hotel was very convenient for us. Location was good. Parking lot for the hotel, my car was safe all weekend. I went for a show and it was a 5 minute walk to the civic center! Definitely would stay again

Family trip to see Hamilton at The Orpheum! Kind staff, clean property, cozy beds. Adorable rock and roll ambiance with charm. Whole family gave me the thumbs up for finding it. Perfect 8-10 minute walk to the Orpheum. Only disappointment was their restaurant/bar wasn’t open on the Saturday night we stayed. A 2 minute walk to Outta Sight Pizza was a blast though!

The neighborhood does have a lot of people hanging out getting high on the surrounding streets. No one bothered us when we walked to a great soul food restaurant named Brenda’s. Overall it was a great place to stay and the onsite secure parking with in and out privileges was a real plus.

Really enjoyed the ambience of this gem in San Francisco! Its a shame that it wont be around for much longer. We were disappointed that we didn't get to visit the bar and restaurant, they were closed on a Friday night - perhaps forever? not certain. Love you guys, keep it real!

Staff is over the top. Friendly. Hotel is older but well maintained. Secure. Bed comfortable. Beautiful pool and garden areas. They have a bar and restaurant also. Free coffee and in the morning free pastries.

This was an incredible place to stay, and we felt so lucky to have found this spot. The staff were lovely and kind, and the owner Orlando was available to address any needs we had immediately. Our room was right across the from the bar which was open until 10pm. Perfect for a quick cocktail the evening we got in. We were positioned in front of the inviting pool, which was open until midnight and heated to 80°—so we went for a December swim at night under the stars & rows of patio lights. It was gorgeous and so fun. The beds were deep, soft memory foam, and we were so grateful for such great beds at the end of our long days. The shower was our only slight complaint, the water was either just barely warm enough or scorching hot. We could’ve said something, but we just managed because our stay was very short. We were wishing we had a mini fridge and a microwave, since we were with kids and it would’ve been great for a quick storing of leftovers and heating them up if needed. There were free donuts & coffee in the mornings, & they even kept our keys and parked our car for us one night when the lot was full. We were right down the street from the Orpheum where we saw our show, and we opted for a car service because it was raining, but it was like a seven minute drive. It’s also literally right around the corner from Brenda’s French soul food, the luckiest find of a brunch and lunch/dinner Soulfood restaurant. The food was divine!! Would absolutely stay @ the Phoenix again!!

We had a great experience with the hotel. Cute retro/music-themed decor fits great since we stayed there to go to a concert at the Great American Music Hall which is super close. The onsite restaurant and bar is fabulous.The pool and patio area look like a blast and provide a nice view even in December. The staff were very frindly and watchful for the guest's comfort and safety. The downfalls are that it's in the Tenderloin area with a high homeless population but if you walk over to Polk street it's better. Also, make sure you get a Banh Mi Sandwich from Saigon Sandwich across the street!! The hotel itself is old and it shows inside the rooms but it didn't have a dirty feel to me. I'll go back for sure.

The pool and entire pool area is very nice. The room had good vibes and king bed was super comfortable. The water pressure in shower was awesome! Staff was friendly and courteous. We were disappointed the restaurant wasn't open on Wednesday for dinner (we were told only open Thursday to Sunday and only for dinner). The restaurant at hotel was one of the reasons we chose it. The website and other booking sites should state that. It put a wrench in our schedule. Bummed there wasn't a free continental type breakfast available. That would be a nice touch. There was also major construction that started at 7 a.m. Crazy loud! Not enjoyable to wake up to that especially after a late night out and a vacation day to sleep in. Not hotel's fault clearly but guests should be informed upon check-in if they are aware of it and have witnessed it for a few days.

All in all a really rad hotel with a splash of vintage rock era colors and decor. Its also a kind of paradise from the grime and bustle of the tenderloin. The heated salt water pool was like liquid butter if that's a thing, unbelievably comfortable. Unfortunately the only negative I had was that the bar+restaurant was closed during our time here. An it was a big reason for my initial reservation. So definitely check their schedule ahead of time. It's proximity to the Civic Graham Auditorium was ideal. Exactly what I was looking for after a long day of walking around the Exploritorium, our concert was only a few blocks away from the Phoenix.

Hotel is not a 3 star hotel. It’s old property and warm. If you are looking for a 3 star hotel look someplace else. Parking is not included and will ask you to pay $25 for each day. Around the property there is too many homeless people

The restaurant and bar was closed right now!!! The iconic red light in my room also didn't work. The bed was nice and the shower products were nice. The area was noisy.

The Phoenix is a very cool and classic spot. I’ve stayed there a few times over the years, and it’s always been quirky and eclectic, yet comfortable and well managed. The pool is pretty awesome also. No, it is not a five star, high-end hotel experience – but it’s safe, comfortable, and totally gives retro Palm Springs vibes in the city. The bed was comfortable, the portable AC in our double king room was amazing- during the not so normal heat wave we were in the middle of…. Not many places, you can find two king beds! Unfortunately, the bar was closed while we were there- and I hope it will open again in the future. Glad to have gotten another stay at the Phoenix- who knows how long it will survive in a world of impersonal places. The same guy was working there when I stayed 25 years ago- and he was still just as cool. Do it for the experience- Sit outside and listen to the breeze through the palms And of course, the sounds of the city…
