The Great Western Hotel

The hotel was in a good location next to the station and just outside of town. Breakfast was good and staff were friendly and helpful. We were put in the wrong room initially which was an administrative oversight by either Expedia or the hotel. The only pain was the hotel was locked at 8 pm and you have to use the ring doorbell, we were outside for some time and I had to ring the hotel to get someone to open the door. They could give a front door key on your fob

A real gem, across the road from the station or use the great free car park next door. Reception was welcoming and after hearing about a bad night at a national chain the night before they promptly sorted an upgrade of room for us - so kind. Breakfast was served in a sunny open room with lots of choices and cooked to order! A fabulous way to set you up for the day.

Great location opposite the station. A shame there was no where to eat or drink in the hotel as we arrived in the evening.

Another pleasant stay don't forget to register your car on check in.

Great hotel just no evening Meal being served

Overall the hotel is very comfortable. The breakfast was very good with various options as the hotel is next to the railway station. If you have a front facing room it can be somewhat noisy. A little bit strange that you were given a small bottle of milk for your room, I would rather see pre-packed small cartons or sleeves. The shower in my room was slightly damaged again. The hotel is a little bit quirky that the door is locked from 830 where you have to ring to get back in the main question is is it worth the money you could get a Premier Inn for the same price, but not as quirky as this hotel

Nobody on the desk on arrival had to walk around looking needed to phone if getting back to hotel after 10pm so porter could open door. So called bar in darkness when we got back at 10 very limited drinks. Room needed blinds and blackout curtains to keep light out. A overpriced hotel will not be going back.

Good all round hotel with friendly staff and very good location opposite the train station. Ten minutes walk to the twin centre and plenty of free parking at the hotel during our two-night stay.

Clean and comfortable

The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel felt deserted, reception not visible through the main door from the carpark. The carpets on the stairs and in the bedroom had seen better days. It felt more like a motel than a hotel

Nice big room. Very clean and quiet considering opposite station. We arrived very early to leave our bags but room was ready. Staff were great and breakfast superb. Our waiter knew his stuff. Only complaints were room very bright all night with station lights. Best to choose a back room opposite garden if this bothers you and bar had closed at 8pm. The porter wasn't allowed to sell us alcohol. Overall a great stay and nice kebab in Efes up the road. Born and brought up in Taunton so a reminiscent couple of days. Lovely shops too.

Staff were very friendly and polite. The room seemed on first glance nicely decorated and the hotel clearly has a lot of history. Breakfast quality was excellent. As a 3* hotel for £100 a night it would be good. However, at £150 there was a lack of attention to detail which meant the price point was not justified. Specifically, - The foyer area could be cleaner, floor mopped, likewise the lounge area. Dirty with lots of bits and tables sticky. - The room had some quite dirty parts e.g. window frames, edges of bathroom, radiator, valance on bed very stained - The room was battered in places e.g. peeling paint, bashed skirting, peeling wallpaper and scuffed wall. New sugar lumps put on top of old conjealed sugar. - The room said it came with a bottle of wine, it had 2 mini bottles. I asked for the included bottle of wine and was given another mini bottle. Felt short changed on this. - Staff were friendly and nice but not proactive e.g. during food they could ask if it was ok, wanting any more drinks, explaining what you could order versus extra charge items etc. - Bed was lumpy - It would be nice to have more information on the history of the hotel, maybe old photos or story or rennovation. The above points are based on the price point of the hotel (actually significantly more expensive than most others in the area) which was not justifed based on the quality of the offer. Could easily be improved and at low cost with more attention to detail.

Very clean and very convenient for station and Taunton town centre

I have stayed here several times and always met with a warm welcome. Rooms are spotlessly clean and comfortable. Staff discreet yet attentive to any requests. A hearty breakfast menu is offered to start the day and thefood never fails to impress. Would highly reccomend

Kind staff. Good comfortable bed in good size room but. lacking a wardrobe, only a free standing clothes rack (not really hotel standard). The heating system needs attention, as is exceptionally hot. Good bathroom. Everything all very clean. Very good breakfast (though a long wait for it after ordering).

Nice hotel good food and friendly and attentive staff. Rooms are very nice too. Unfortunately the bathrooms let it down. The shower screens are too short so water goes everywhere and floods the bathroom and the sinks are not bathroom sinks, they are designed for small toilets and there are no hooks on the doors. They are so small you can't get the kettle in to fill it up and if you do something like washing your face, again water goes everywhere, not good. Shame because the rest of the hotel is lovely.

Good standard of accommodation - the only problem I had was the shower was boiling hot and I couldn't find a way to adjust it. Breakfast cooked to order came very quickly. Very friendly staff.

The beds are really comfy, but pillows are like rock, the bathrooms well equipped and clean. Room servicing was sporadic at best. couple of occasions we had to empty own bin and tea/ coffee was never restocked. Staff are really friendly and polite , but sometimes finding someone to speak to was challenging during the day. but all in all I would stay there again as so convenient for train travel , catching taxis and dining out.

Lovely hotel, with really helpful staff and a good breakfast. Only downside was the creaky floors, but to be expected in an old building.

The bedroom was really nice, spacious and comfortable. We stayed in a Premier double. Breakfast service was sometimes a little chaotic; we didn't mind this in view of the training aspect of the hotel but it might put some people off. I think you need to buy in to the ethos of the hotel. Location excellent, right opposite the station.

I have stayed here three times don’t forget to put your car registration in the car park. The back of the hotel is a lot quieter than the front Wi-Fi is good. Breakfast is nice and starts at 7 am.The only thing that needs to be sorted out are the windows I have to wedge them open with something. I will be staying again.

It was my third or fourth stay here. Always very helpful and friendly staff, always great service, breakfast is decent, rooms are comfortable, and it doesn't cost the earth.

Was spoken to with no respect when checking in & was not given a room to the standard or description I’d selected. I’d selected & paid for a superior room & the staff member checking me in seemed extremely uncooperative & didn’t seem very welcoming or respectful. When mentioning my Expedia gold member status & the perks included I was told they didn’t apply & had to read them out from my booking confirmation. The staff member who checked me in had to confirm this with management leaving myself & partner hanging about waiting. I was also asked to pay at the desk to which I responded it’s already paid for, the check in was a nightmare. Other staff members were polite & helpful especially a night staff member who assisted us with access back into the hotel late at night & provided us with extra things we needed for the bathroom. Overall I love the traditional theme of the hotel & the link to the history of the area & the railway. The rooms are named after local railway stations from the area & the historic West Somerset Railway. Historic items & fittings are on display. I think the hotel has a great future & is spacious & comfortable.

Words just can’t express how overwhelmingly happy we are with our stay with the Great Western Hotel, Taunton. The building itself is beautiful and lovingly kept, with every aesthetic detail exuding style and quality! Our room was lovely with stylish decor and little touches like a real cafetière, instead of instant coffee, made it feel more personal. Breakfast was high quality and again, personalised! The staff were more than happy to fully adjust the menu to meet our preferences and were just delightful. I feel very strongly that the staff deserve a special thank you… each and every member of their team went above and beyond to make myself and my daughter feel welcome and comfortable. My very nervous daughter was about to sit her first GCSE in Taunton, hence the overnight stay, and the staff were just so beautiful with her and really helped to reassure her. She went off to the exam centre beaming! In addition to all of this- they allowed us to use their parking, free of charge while we went into the town for lunch after the exam. I have stayed in many hotels over the year, but this little gem is by far the best yet. I can’t recommend enough. A huge thank you for making a potentially stressful trip a pure delight! ❤️

Situated a little out of town centre but within walking distance. Good hotel, good size room with very nice en-suite. Nice and clean. Lovely breakfast. Overall a nice stay

What a find! Brilliant place to stay opposite the train station and 10 minutes walk from the county cricket ground! Excellent restaurants nearby too. Not for profit charity run in aid of YMCA so nice to give back something. Couldn’t fault it. Breakfast lovely too.

Old school railway station hotel, charming with nice staff. Kitchen is closed so no evening meal. Breakfast choices limited

I only booked here as they had great breakfast reviews, shortly afterwards they emailed to say their kitchen was closed due to an ongoing refurb..... Not a bad hotel other than a bit of noise from the train station opposite.

Great stay again there was some work being carried out but this only affected breakfast. Grab bag was provided but not Diabetic friendly. Lovely staff very helpful.
