The Historic Berkeley Place

Exceptional property -very well maintained and clean. Spacious room and very comfortable bed. Perfect location next to historic downtown Staunton.

We stayed in July 2026 in the Baldwin room and can provide very positive feedback. This self service hotel is very well run. Our apartment was spacious and comfortable. The location is in the quiet city centre near the university. When parking in the back of the hotel guests need to park close to the fence/wall to leave space for the other cars to maneuver. We were never able to reach the hotel team on the phone but they are very efficient inn communicating via email/text. Please be aware Expedia price may fail to include the cleaning charge.

It’s a beautifully restored inn, nicely furnished and very clean. I wish the bed were in better shape and firmer, and the bedding higher quality sheets. Also new guests need to be aware there is no elevator or staff onsite so guests have to carry their luggage up the stairs. I was charged ~$40 more than the confirmed reservation on hotels.com without explanation, a very rare occurrence.

BEWARE OF THE NON DISCLOSURE OF $80 CLEANING OR TOWEL FEES - ADDED AT CHECK OUT. We booked our stay through Expedia, where the apparent "$80 towel fee" was buried deep in the terms and conditions. It wasn't until I got home that I noticed the extra charge. After three days of going back and forth with Expedia & Historic Berkeley, I was finally able to get the cleaning fee refunded from Expedia, even though the monies were collected at the hotel. The hotel was apologetic but placed the blame on Expedia. Regardless of whose fault it was, fees like this should be clearly disclosed before booking, not discovered after checkout, especially since the Historic Berkeley has a 50% non refundable cancel. There are a few other things to be aware of as well. Guests are required to pay at checkout, the cancellation policy is extremely strict, and there is no on-site staff. All communication is handled by text message with a central support team. The listing also advertises free parking, but in reality there are only three very small first-come, first-served spaces behind the house. Most of the surrounding street parking is limited to two hours or requires a permit. What makes this especially disappointing is that I genuinely enjoyed the property itself. Our suite was beautiful, clean, and comfortable, and the Cozy Earth sheets were absolutely heavenly. It's unfortunate that the lack of transparency about the additional fees overshadowed what otherwise could have been a great stay.

I would highly, highly recommend staying at the Historic Berkeley, every attention to detail was met and was above and beyond. The luxury sheets and bedding alone was worth money for this stay. Lots of extras, including coffee in your room, water, cokes, and in the lobby there was gelato and snacks; extremely clean and a great location. Definitely will be going back for our next day soon!
