This was one of our favorite stays on the Big Island to date! Jim and Meagan’s place is perfect for getting away and the home is extremely relaxing. The ocean views from each room are amazing. We loved swimming in the pool and hanging out by the firepit each evening. We will definitely be back! Thanks again for a great vacation.

We’d have given 10 stars if it was available. Without giving away all of the little hidden gems this property holds, I will say that no matter the weather, this property does not disappoint! Our week included sunny, partly sunny and some windy weather, all very mild and enjoyable. We soaked up the sun at the pool and spent HOURS on the wrapped porch area. Mother Nature showed off with SPECTACULAR views of crashing waves that we enjoyed both from the water’s edge sitting area, as well as the nearly 360 degree glass porch area. The lawn and tropical tree areas were meticulously manicured and were complimented by the stone fountain that runs from the house to the pond area. The house and property are even more magnificent than the pictures show. The inside of the home was rich with beautiful and rare Koa wood. The inside is something to behold! There is a large table that easily fits 8 and is the perfect size for hours of family game time. I can not say enough about the responsiveness and hospitality of Jim and Meagan. They quickly answered questions, gave local recommendations and were just kind and gracious folks. This property is located with access to local markets and eateries nearby. This property is certainly one we hope to return to.

Ok, this house and property are gorgeous. Clean, well appointed and an unbelievable view. There are beautiful materials and craftsmanship in the mango and koa woodwork. There is a nice clean lap pool with comfy lounges.

Our group of 7 (2 couples and 3 teenagers) enjoyed our stay at this VRBO. The location was great for our excursion to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, as well as, a cool zip line tour just north of Hilo. Playing billiards and sitting around the fire pit were highlights. The master bedroom on the 2nd floor was great. The layout of the downstairs was a little odd, and some commented that a dehumidifier would have been nice downstairs. Overall, the setting was beautiful; we just wish we had been there during one of the Kīlauea eruptions!

Wow! This is a gorgeous home and setting! From the terrific master suite to the spectacular porch offering a 180 degree view of the ocean to a walk in the quiet neighborhood just outside the property. The kitchen was stocked with all the equipment we needed to make meals here and for those nights we ate out there were recommendations from the hosts in a helpful book they provided. Jim and Meagan were such gracious hosts -they thought of everything! Everything was super clean and well cared for. We briefly met the pool man and the gardeners who just went about their business without disturbing us. It was amazing to watch Coconut Joe shimmy up the coconut trees to trim them. We were curious about the process and he answered all our questions and even cut open a coconut for us! We enjoyed the puzzles and games that were at the house and enjoyed the pool too! Loved that there were four chaise chairs at the pool and more on the deck. We all took turns on the big hammock on the deck. Great location to spin off from to visit Hilo, the Volcano, historical sights, gardens, waterfalls and even horseback riding. We had such a wonderful time staying at this stellar property - we felt as if it was our own private resort! We can’t wait to visit again! Thanks Meagan and Jim for sharing your lovely home with us! It's set on a large three acre lot that makes it feel like you're in the jungle and gives you some buffer room from some of the neighboring homes. The two levels, open concept, and wrap-around covered lanai with lounge chairs and hammock gave everyone their own space to relax. The grounds are amazingly designed and well kept! An array of beautiful tropical plants and a huge flowing water feature in the backyard makes everything feel so tranquil and peaceful. Our kids spent a ton of time in the swimming pool that is right off the master bedroom. While not heated, it was plenty warm and our kiddos had no complaints. Be careful walking on the outdoor tiles, as they can get slippery after being in the pool or from the early morning dew. The home is set on the beautiful black lava cliffs overlooking the ocean. The sound of the waves crashing on the rocks was a great way to drift off to sleep every night. We saw whales and sea turtles right from the property! There is also a really cool farmers market (Maku'u Farmers Market) a couple miles away that is open on Sundays. There was a great selection of fresh fruits and veggies, great food trucks/stalls, and local artisans selling crafts. Our stay was absolutely perfect! The house was clean and well appointed with everything needed to cook meals. It also has a large propane grill under a covered portion of the lanai for grilling your freshly caught seafood. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Great communication by owners. Gorgeous main room with soaring ceiling around beautiful lava chimney. Outstanding views/sounds from the waves on the rocks out front. Plenty of space to stretch-out indoors and out. Well-appointed kitchen. Comfortable beds and linens. The kids loved the bunk beds, air hockey table, and pool! If there were one thing that we'd change, it'd be adding some solar heating to the pool during these chillier winter months. Thanks so much for sharing your home - we'd definitely return to this property in a heartbeat!

We loved our stay in Pahoa. The home is located on a beautiful property with a view of the sunrise every morning. We loved grilling and having dinner on the patio, playing pool in the billiards room, and just relaxing on the deck. The bedrooms were comfortable and accommodated our group with plenty of room to spare. The owners were very responsive and a pleasure to work with. We will be back!

Hale Kakahi means Unique House. And it truly lives up to the name. The grounds, the architecture, the tropical vegetation, the wraparound lanai, and the view are all overwhelmingly stunning. Every morning we would wake up early to catch the sunrise and see how the light bounced around inside the interior through the windows. The house itself is super maintained—not an easy task for a home on the ocean. The koa wood floors and other exotic woods along with the many floor-to-ceiling windows are something you rarely see in a home. The entire property will take your breath away. My husband and I stayed there for 4 nights; but we also used to own this property and decided to rent it on a visit back to the Big Island. It warmed our hearts to see it so well taken care of; because we, of all people know what it takes to maintain a 3-acre property on the ocean. Mahalo nui loa to the owners, who have thought of all the details to ensure a memorable stay for their guests. They really care.

Perfect stay. Three kids stayed in the bunk and loved having their own room with direct access outside. The master up stairs is comfortable and beautiful, leading to the pool. The kitchen is big and bright. We had all our meals outside and happy hour by the fire pit. One evening we saw whales!

Our family vacation was absolutely amazing! This property is gorgeous, and the house was very clean. The host was incredibly responsive and helpful. The location was perfect for exploring the Island. This was such a fantastic place to call home for four nights. Super clean, very responsive host, clear instructions. Everything we could need was there (including ear plugs for the frogs at night!). The lanai out front was a great spot to bird watch and enjoy the beautiful flowering trees. Very quiet neighborhood very close to the ocean and convenient for many places including Hilo, Paho'a, and beyond. We would absolutely stay again.

Everything you could possibly need. Very clean. Really impressed with the laundry room. Sitting on the front porch looking into the yard is just like lovely.

We loved our stay. It was myself and my two twenty something kids. The house is clean and comfortable. WiFi connectivity was great and I was able to work when I needed. We enjoyed eating in Pāhoa village and the locals were friendly.

This is a truly stunning property with an incredible ocean view. The home and grounds are very beautiful and feel secluded although the house is in an easily accessible neighborhood and close to amenties. There was plenty of space for our whole family and we enjoyed making meals in the large kitchen and then enjoying them on the massive lanai. It was also a good home base for visting Volcanoes National Park and for day trips to Hilo.We loved our time here and would highly recommend it.

Beautiful grounds and home. We stayed here for a few nights to wind down at the end of an extended family trip. It was a great retreat and we enjoyed cooking a few meals in the kitchen. The living room could get a little warm during the day, but the bedroom AC was plenty comfortable.

A beautiful, well-maintained house that feels like it's in the middle of a rainforest, but is still easily accessible by car. The open-floor plan of the main living area + kitchen invites guests to spend time together, but the three main bedrooms provide sufficient privacy. Everything around the house is in good working working order, which shows how much the owners care about the property. The garden is absolutely magnificent! This was one of our favorite places in Hawaii - we had a great time and would love to come back again for a longer stay.

The property is amazing. I loved waking up to the sound of the waves everyday. The house had everything we needed and even a couple board games for the kids. It was easy to find, even in the dark, which has not always been the case at other Vrbo’s we have stayed at. I like that one of the master suites was attached to the room with the bunk beds so our small children wouldn’t be walking up the steep stairs looking for us in the middle of the night. We would stay definitely stay again if given the chance.

This place looked even better in person! We really enjoyed our time on the East side of the island and were sad to leave this fabulous house. We made some great memories! We truly couldn’t wait to get back to the house after our excursions and spent most evenings in, just listening to the waves and enjoying the comfortable living room with the best tv content we’ve ever had at a rental. We could have just stayed there all day and been perfectly happy. Thank you so much for the wonderful time!

We stayed here for 5 nights and I wish it would have been 25! Comfortable beds, wonderful air conditioning. We spent several hours just staring at the ocean and even saw dolphins, whales, and turtles right out the back. Black Sand Beach, Volcanos, and Green Sand Beach were awesome waypoints when we could pry ourselves away from the amazing views and comfort of this home. We can't wait to come back!

The house was beautiful and the setting was gorgeous. We were very comfortable there. We had a couple of people who had to work during part of the stay, and the internet worked great. Also, it was nice that there were several desks for the working people. Some of us enjoyed running on the Government Beach Road - just gorgeous! We also really enjoyed breakfast at Pele's Kitchen in Pahoa.

Check in process was smooth. We had everything we needed. Lots of bugs out so we we’re making sure they don’t get in. Roosters did get loud in the early morning but nothing too annoying, it was actually fun to hear them. Used the grill and stove, made a few amazing Hawaiian meals.

This property is a hidden gem! The location is remote however perfect if you want be in the most peaceful and beautiful place ever. Jim and Meagan were excellent hosts, extremely attentive and responsive. Our family enjoyed our stay very much even with the tsunami! :)

We were so excited about this trip but we unfortunately had SEVERAL issues with the hosts that soured our experience. First off, a separate rental agreement was sent to us the month before check-in followed by a request for payment. I paid the remainder of our balance and missed the message about the agreement. The owner didn’t mention it was missing until THREE HOURS before check-in. We were already headed across the island, with shotty cellphone service and no internet. They said they needed it to be filled out, including a signature, and a picture of our drivers license to be emailed to them before they would give us access to the house. I even asked if they could give us their WiFi info once we got there so we could do it from outside. They said no. Luckily, once we got to Pahoa, my husbands hotspot worked, I dug out my laptop (we would have been completely screwed if I didn’t have it) and we completed the paperwork. We had awful weather… that is no fault of the hosts of course… but when asked about a tv that wasn’t working (there were two not working actually), the hosts response was “not much I can do about a broken tv at 8pm. Most people are there to enjoy the views” How about a “so sorry for the inconvenience. I will get that fixed first thing in the morning”?! Not to mention, there is no “view” at night AND we had zero views most of the time we were there because it was overcast and raining. There were ZERO toys for kids. The only toys we saw were locked in a room that we could see through the window but they wouldn’t let us have access even when we were desperate to entertain the kids with all the bad weather. Finally, after we left, they messaged us asking where the key was for the studio room (side note- this room is not attached to the space at all… you have to go outside to get to your room. Not convenient when it is down pouring the entire time. And the physical key had to be used instead of the keypad on the door because that was ALSO broken) Anyway, my father-in-law accidentally pocketed the key. We apologized and said we would ship it from the Honolulu airport if they had a post office or right when we got back to Michigan. The hosts response “Leave us a nice review and we will forget about it. It’s normally $250 for time and such to replace it” That’s called extortion. Obviously I don’t care about the threat because I’m writing a truthful review regardless. These clowns should be removed from Vrbo.

It was the first time for my family of 8 to visit the big island, and in no way was it a disappointment at all! We fell in love with the house, the location, the people, and the culture! The house was beautiful in every aspect down to every detail! We fell in love with it so much that we hated to leave! We cannot wait to tell everyone about this property so they can book a trip and enjoy paradise just like we did! We ran into a little issue while we were there, and of course on Christmas day, and Jim was so kind and hospitable and took time from his day to help us out! We could not have asked for a more perfect VRBO rental in the most perfect location ever! Make a point to go outside at night and take in the beauty of the stars above! You will not see anything like it from wherever you may live!

An excellent location to experience the "green" side of the island. We loved its proximity to the National Park, Waterfalls and Black sand beaches. We also loved getting a flavor of the less touristy side island. The home was spacious and comfortable and had beautiful gardens and a view of the ocean.

we came here with our daughter and her husband. very quiet and peaceful. experience was very nice. true Hawaii feel. the birds were great. The house is located in a dense rain forest area. toured the volcano national park and took a helicopter ride.

My wife and I brought our two daughters and their husbands to enjoy a week of island paradise. This place delivered. We had a magical time. The place was beautiful, and the location was ideal for getting to waterfalls, beaches and volcanos. Our only regret was not having another week to stay.

My wife and I could not have asked for a better house to use as our home base for 5 days on the Big Island! The hosts were great and very responsive, which is always appreciated when you are traveling from so far away! The pictures really don’t do it justice, the views are amazing and the house was beautiful. We really enjoyed sitting out by the lava rocks watching the waves crash over the cliffs. We used the pool every day we were there and it was a great option to have after long days of hiking in the park, or doing many of the other activities in the area. The house is a bit of a drive to Hilo (40min or so) but there are many great options for food and grocery shopping nearby (15 min). We used the well equipped kitchen to cook a few meals at the house and loved eating those meals out on the porch with that amazing view. If you are staying on this side of the island, there is really no better place to stay!

The two levels, open concept, and wrap-around covered lanai with lounge chairs and hammock gave everyone their own space to relax. The grounds are amazingly designed and well kept! An array of beautiful tropical plants and a huge flowing water feature in the backyard makes everything feel so tranquil and peaceful. Our kids spent a ton of time in the swimming pool that is right off the master bedroom. While not heated, it was plenty warm and our kiddos had no complaints. Be careful walking on the outdoor tiles, as they can get slippery after being in the pool or from the early morning dew. The home is set on the beautiful black lava cliffs overlooking the ocean. The sound of the waves crashing on the rocks was a great way to drift off to sleep every night. We saw whales and sea turtles right from the property! There is also a really cool farmers market (Maku'u Farmers Market) a couple miles away that is open on Sundays. There was a great selection of fresh fruits and veggies, great food trucks/stalls, and local artisans selling crafts. Our stay was absolutely perfect! The house was clean and well appointed with everything needed to cook meals. It also has a large propane grill under a covered portion of the lanai for grilling your freshly caught seafood. We can't wait to go back! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. It was a very special family vacation that we won't soon forget.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Great communication by owners. Gorgeous main room with soaring ceiling around beautiful lava chimney. Outstanding views/sounds from the waves on the rocks out front. Plenty of space to stretch-out indoors and out. Well-appointed kitchen. Comfortable beds and linens. The kids loved the bunk beds, air hockey table, and pool! If there were one thing that we'd change, it'd be adding some solar heating to the pool during these chillier winter months. Thanks so much for sharing your home - we'd definitely return to this property in a heartbeat!

We loved our stay in Pahoa. The home is located on a beautiful property with a view of the sunrise every morning. We loved grilling and having dinner on the patio, playing pool in the billiards room, and just relaxing on the deck. The bedrooms were comfortable and accommodated our group with plenty of room to spare. The owners were very responsive and a pleasure to work with. We will be back!

Lovely location, great view, feels very private (trees do a good job of making it hard to see other houses). Stayed here 2 years ago, and enjoyed it so much we came back. Couple nice restaurants in Pahoa and Hilo isn't far either. Jim and Meagan are very responsive and helped us when we ran into issues (neighborhood power was out for a few hours when we arrived).

My wife and I could not have asked for a better house to use as our home base for 5 days on the Big Island! The hosts were great and very responsive, which is always appreciated when you are traveling from so far away! The pictures really don’t do it justice, the views are amazing and the house was beautiful. We really enjoyed sitting out by the lava rocks watching the waves crash over the cliffs. We used the pool every day we were there and it was a great option to have after long days of hiking in the park, or doing many of the other activities in the area. The house is a bit of a drive to Hilo (40min or so) but there are many great options for food and grocery shopping nearby (15 min). We used the well equipped kitchen to cook a few meals at the house and loved eating those meals out on the porch with that amazing view. If you are staying on this side of the island, there is really no better place to stay!

Check in process was smooth. We had everything we needed. Lots of bugs out so we we’re making sure they don’t get in. Roosters did get loud in the early morning but nothing too annoying, it was actually fun to hear them. Used the grill and stove, made a few amazing Hawaiian meals.
