What an amazing property! Fantastic hosts, we did not want to leave. Loved the lanai with a beautiful view. We had 7 adults and it was perfect for our family while we visited family near by. We look forward to our next visit and will stay here again. Everything we could need was there to cook, relax, bike, do wash. Great home away from home. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home. Met all of our needs. Wonderful porch with wonderful views. Had a decent stocked kitchen for meals, the scuba gear and beach towels on hand were helpful. Bikes could use some love. Wonderful hikes nearby property.

The house was great with a superb location. It can be a bit hot inside the house in the late afternoon and early evening but we didn't care because we preferred to spend the whole evening out on the covered front deck watching the ocean. The house has lots of windows to let the breezes through and they provide a lot of fans if needed. The accompanying oceanfront lot across the street was also a great place to spend the mornings and evenings. The house had a lot of amenities that made the stay very pleasureable.
The house was great with a superb location. We loved our stay at this beautiful property! Everything was decorated beautifully & had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The outside area (deck and backyard) we’re out favorite places to enjoy. Our only wish is that we had stayed longer to enjoy it more! Great option for our family of 7 - plenty of space to accommodate everyone comfortably.

This place was very thought out and had everything you could need for an epic Hawaiian vacation. Quiet and beautiful setting. Peeper frogs all night to help you sleep. Gardens were cool and the ocean front was great for photos. Close enough to everything but felt like we got away! Great space for a family or small group.

We enjoyed a wonderful week with family at the Whale House. We spent most of our time at the house on the lanai, relishing the ocean views/breezes, sunrises, family meals/games or just relaxing in the hammock chairs. The kitchen was well-equipped for our family of eight. We appreciated the variety of beach equipment such as beach towels, chairs, umbrellas, snorkel gear and coolers. There was even sunscreen and bug spray! There were a number of bicycles available but they are not in the best condition, so they are only good for short rides around the neighborhood. Since we had four couples,, we used all four bedrooms and it was uncomfortable for the ones who did not have a bathroom.. The one bathroom on the lower level can only be accessed by going through the other bedroom. There is no common bathroom even on the main floor. The house is in a quiet neighborhood on the coast south of Hilo, so it is a 20-30 minute drive to most of the restaurants, stores and beaches Kona is a 2 hour drive across the island on a hilly two-lane highway. Overall, this was a lovely place to be all together in paradise.

Beautiful property! Gardens are relaxing. Well stocked. The amenities were helpful! Bicycles, boogie boards, water shoes, ice chests, chairs, beach towels, to list a few. Really no need to leave the property. Beautiful home. Awesome vacation for our 4 generation family!! The view was spectacular.

The Whale house is stocked with everything you need, AND MORE!! The mural on the outside is only complimented by the consistant Hawaiian theme throughout the house, including the octapus in the lower bath. Most of the art is from Tiffany Prose, an amazing Hawaiian artist. Very comfortable home. The frogs are loud at night but did not hinder our rest. We spent most of our time on the deck looking out to the ocean. The chairs near the cliff were a bonus. We met a neighbor that was picking snails off the cliff, O'pee. Yummy. We will be back!

Beautiful property! Wishing we could have stayed longer. We enjoyed Hilo, the Volcanoes and the Black Sand Beach. The kids learned to snorkel using the equipment available at the house and had a blast!

What a wonderful place to stay. My husband and me, brother and his wife and two kids loved our stay here. David was great at answering questions promptly. Everything was as expected. We loved the lanai and the easy walk to watch the waves. Everything was clean and comfortable. 10/10 highly recommend!

Beautiful property! Particularly loved the lava that remained as part of the landscape. Thoroughly enjoyed the night sounds of wild life and the ocean. Property was immaculate with all provisions imaginable. Glass front allowed total enjoyment of the ocean view. Highly recommend!

The Whale House was super clean when we arrived. The beds are very comfortable, especially the soft sheets. David and Chrystal have thought of everything! I loved the beautiful grounds. Every day we walked out to the ocean, and listened to the waves crashing. We have family on this side of the island, so they took us on many excursions. We ate at Kaleo’s in Orchidland twice. I highly recommend it. We took a day trip to the Kona side and enjoyed swimming at Hāpuna Beach. There is so much to see and experience.

We had an excellent visit at the Whale house. I enjoyed my morning coffee on the deck with a stunning view of the ocean, every morning. The house was clean, hosts were prompt in responding and the location was beautiful. We would absolutely stay here again.

The Whale House is a beautiful property and was a great base for all of our adventures on the big island. Watching the sunrise over the ocean every morning was a special treat. The house is very well appointed, very clean, and the beds where all comfortable. The only suggestion from our party was about the downstairs suite. There is no A/C which wasn't a major issue temperature-wise but getting decent airflow required all of the windows to be open at night and coqui frogs were incredibly loud even with multiple fans running.

We absolutely are in love with this home. The house is situated on top of hardened black lava. It is an incredibly special property. The large lanais overlooks the ocean, and the gardens are beautiful. We cooked several meals, and found the kitchen well equipped. All of us slept well, the bedrooms all have king beds. It's the perfect location to explore the Hilo area. Put on the Hawaiian rollercoaster song while on the road to the house; it is a paved road with smooth ups and downs, and soon our family would be oohing and ahhing all the way to the Whale House at the end of our excursions.

Beautiful property with a mini rainforest in the back and surf crashing on the front. The wrap around deck is amazing. Interior is great with two bedrooms upstairs each with a private bath and two downstairs bedrooms. Note there is a separate entrance for the two lower level bedrooms. This is one of the best apportioned Vrbos I’ve stayed at. Beach gear including coolers and chairs, umbrellas for the rain, bug spray, card games, a full kitchen with pre frozen ice packs, and more. It’s clear that the hosts want their guests to be able to enjoy their stay. Thank you!

We LOVED the whale house!! Two rooms upstairs for the adults and a cool little apartment for the kids downstairs! It couldn’t have been better laid out or more beautiful! Clean, amazing sunrises, awesome neighborhood!! The only compliant is no beach access- but we knew that going in. I would highly recommend this amazing property to anyone who wants a true authentic big island experience! Mahalo

We loved Whale House! The ocean views and sound of waves every day was spectacular and the proximity to so many of the sites that Hilo has to offer was wonderful. The only negative part of our stay was acclimating to the climate with limited air conditioning, which is a challenge for midwesterners who are used to a/c everywhere. So keep that in mind with this property (and many restaurants/shops throughout the area), and plan to be outside during the day enjoying the beautiful views and go swimming at the black sand beaches!

What an amazing property! Fantastic hosts, we did not want to leave. Loved the lanai with a beautiful view. We had 7 adults and it was perfect for our family while we visited family near by. We look forward to our next visit and will stay here again. Everything we could need was there to cook, relax, bike, do wash. Great home away from home. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home. We had a lovely few days staying at Whale House. Even though the days were intermittently drizzly, there was no shortage peaceful space to enjoy the scenery. The art inside the house was delightful! The house was well provisioned for food and fun. Bonus was that it was close enough for daily outings and adventures but far enough out of "town" to feel secluded (and secure). We ran into a little snafu with the keys and lock box. The hosts were on top of it! Highly recommend!

What a wonderful place to stay. My husband and me, brother and his wife and two kids loved our stay here. David was great at answering questions promptly. Everything was as expected. We loved the lanai and the easy walk to watch the waves. Everything was clean and comfortable. 10/10 highly recommend!

This place was very thought out and had everything you could need for an epic Hawaiian vacation. Quiet and beautiful setting. Peeper frogs all night to help you sleep. Gardens were cool and the ocean front was great for photos. Close enough to everything but felt like we got away! Great space for a family or small group.

The Whale House was super clean when we arrived. The beds are very comfortable, especially the soft sheets. David and Chrystal have thought of everything! I loved the beautiful grounds. Every day we walked out to the ocean, and listened to the waves crashing. We have family on this side of the island, so they took us on many excursions. We ate at Kaleo’s in Orchidland twice. I highly recommend it. We took a day trip to the Kona side and enjoyed swimming at Hāpuna Beach. There is so much to see and experience.

If you’re thinking about it, do it!! Perfect location for day trips, everything is about 30 minutes away. Once here though you do not want to leave. Morning sunrises on the property with coffee were stunning. We looked forward to that everyday. Owner was quick to respond to needs/questions! Only complaint is house gets very warm, even with A/C split running but would still stay again. It was that wonderful! We just spent most of our time on the gorgeous front lanai! Mahalo!

The Whale House is fantastic, and everything was excellent. My wife and my in-laws were absolutely enamored and took a million pictures of the place and the view. My mother on the other hand is not a fan of birds and frogs, so she slept with the windows closed to her room instead of enjoying the Hawaiian ambiance. The hosts were very responsive and thought of everything you could imagine to make the stay comfortable and effortless, even for a family of 7! I would gladly stay here again.

We had an excellent visit at the Whale house. I enjoyed my morning coffee on the deck with a stunning view of the ocean, every morning. The house was clean, hosts were prompt in responding and the location was beautiful. We would absolutely stay here again.

We had the most amazing time at the whale house. The amenities were very helpful, the property was amazing and centrally located to many of the adventures we wanted to have. It was so nice to return to each day as a point of relaxation. The ONLY reason we said 4 stars overall was because as we were packing one of the stairs rotted out and my husband fell through and injured himself. The owners keep this place up kept, it was a screw that sheered off, nothing annyone could have predicted. The neighbors came running and were a great help, however the owner seemed more worried about his stairs than the guy who fell through them. I understand it was all kind of a crazy situation so we don’t always respond as expected. Otherwise I highly recommend this place. Everyone needs to visit the whale house!

We absolutely are in love with this home. The house is situated on top of hardened black lava. It is an incredibly special property. The large lanais overlooks the ocean, and the gardens are beautiful. We cooked several meals, and found the kitchen well equipped. All of us slept well, the bedrooms all have king beds. It's the perfect location to explore the Hilo area. Put on the Hawaiian rollercoaster song while on the road to the house; it is a paved road with smooth ups and downs, and soon our family would be oohing and ahhing all the way to the Whale House at the end of our excursions.

The house was great with a superb location. It can be a bit hot inside the house in the late afternoon and early evening but we didn't care because we preferred to spend the whole evening out on the covered front deck watching the ocean. The house has lots of windows to let the breezes through and they provide a lot of fans if needed. The accompanying oceanfront lot across the street was also a great place to spend the mornings and evenings. The house had a lot of amenities that made the stay very pleasureable.

We enjoyed a wonderful week with family at the Whale House. We spent most of our time at the house on the lanai, relishing the ocean views/breezes, sunrises, family meals/games or just relaxing in the hammock chairs. The kitchen was well-equipped for our family of eight. We appreciated the variety of beach equipment such as beach towels, chairs, umbrellas, snorkel gear and coolers. There was even sunscreen and bug spray! There were a number of bicycles available but they are not in the best condition, so they are only good for short rides around the neighborhood. Since we had four couples,, we used all four bedrooms and it was uncomfortable for the ones who did not have a bathroom.. The one bathroom on the lower level can only be accessed by going through the other bedroom. There is no common bathroom even on the main floor. The house is in a quiet neighborhood on the coast south of Hilo, so it is a 20-30 minute drive to most of the restaurants, stores and beaches Kona is a 2 hour drive across the island on a hilly two-lane highway. Overall, this was a lovely place to be all together in paradise.

We LOVED the whale house!! Two rooms upstairs for the adults and a cool little apartment for the kids downstairs! It couldn’t have been better laid out or more beautiful! Clean, amazing sunrises, awesome neighborhood!! The only compliant is no beach access- but we knew that going in. I would highly recommend this amazing property to anyone who wants a true authentic big island experience! Mahalo

We loved Whale House! The ocean views and sound of waves every day was spectacular and the proximity to so many of the sites that Hilo has to offer was wonderful. The only negative part of our stay was acclimating to the climate with limited air conditioning, which is a challenge for midwesterners who are used to a/c everywhere. So keep that in mind with this property (and many restaurants/shops throughout the area), and plan to be outside during the day enjoying the beautiful views and go swimming at the black sand beaches!

My husband’s siblings and sisters-in-law/brother-in-law gathered together for a Hawaiian vacation. We had a lovely time together exploring the island and sharing a house was the perfect way to spend quality time together. We ate meals on the lanai, watched the ocean, read books, played cards, and watched funny videos. There was plenty of room for everyone! (Two couples shared the downstairs bathroom which did require access through a bedroom) The area was lovely and quiet as it was more remote. The neighborhood was high end and felt very safe. We were about 20-30 minutes drive to Hilo. This was a perfect retreat for a relaxing getaway.

The Whale House is a beautiful property and was a great base for all of our adventures on the big island. Watching the sunrise over the ocean every morning was a special treat. The house is very well appointed, very clean, and the beds where all comfortable. The only suggestion from our party was about the downstairs suite. There is no A/C which wasn't a major issue temperature-wise but getting decent airflow required all of the windows to be open at night and coqui frogs were incredibly loud even with multiple fans running.

Roaches in every room of this place. Beautiful location doesn’t matter, neat and tidy doesn’t matter when there are roaches in the silverware drawer. And also in the dishes cabinets. I contacted host on the day of arrival and did not hear back until the following day. He arranged for a “cleaning person” to clean the following day while we were out of the house. He claimed they also treated for bugs. We continued to be visited by roaches in every room of this place. I was not comfortable making any meals in this place or using any of the cook ware to prepare meals Host claims he never has heard this before, yet every room had bug traps in the corner of every room of this house. I’ve stayed in many places in Hawaii and YES it is a tropical location and YES bugs are plentiful. However I have NEVER had this experience. And when we checked out of the property early because of the bugs, host refused any discount or refund. We ended up eating every meal at restaurants nearby - an added cost we didn’t anticipate after paying for this “house”

The property is in an amazing location outside of Hilo. It is surrounded by amazing gardens with the ocean across the street. The street the house is on is quiet. The host offers a lot of amenities for spending time at the beach or bike riding. It is a beautiful property and we would stay there again if we come back to Hilo.

Our stay was wonderful. A nice relaxing stay. The grounds are beautiful. Air conditioning is only in the bottom half of the house. The house was very comfortable. My only suggestion is to bring purified water for the coffee maker. We were unable to make coffee the first evening and next morning until we bought some. One of the nicest VRBO properties I have stayed in. Thank you!

We loved the whale house with its great lanai, view, and water access. A lot of time and attention was spent on this property with a unique garden and probably the best equipped VRBO I’ve stayed in. We enjoyed it very much and would happily stay again!
