Fogcatcher Inn

Quite beach front location. Pretty area but much too cold for swimming in the ocean. The hotel pool is heated and the they provide outdoor seating areas with gas fired pits between the building areas.

This was the second time I've stayed here and I love Cambria and its setting even more. The beach and board walks are delightful - we saw lots of redwing blackbirds and snowy egrets where the nearby creek meets the ocean. As for the hotel, the rooms are clean and furnished with quality linens and towels. The fireplaces are a real draw. The pool was being worked on, but it was too cold to swim anyhow, so we used the hot tub one night. The firepits were appealing, though the front one needs repairs to self-light. On my first visit, there was a dining room with food for breakfast, now you order from a local eatery for delivery. We didn't try the delivery food. The in-room coffee was good. Nearby are two restaurants and a wine tasting venue. We had a later dinner at Moonstone Grill, the less crowded restaurant. Very nice food and wine. We recommend Sunday Mass at the Camaldoni Monastery near Lucia, the drive and weather were glorious and the quiet up there is incredible. Lots to do in this locale. We hope to come back.

We spent two nights at the FogCatcher Inn. First here are the great things; 1. Can't beat the location. Our upgraded room faced the ocean and all the comes with it, the views, the roar of the waves, the gorgeous sunsets and sunrise. 2. Large room with a comfortable king size bed. 3. Large bathroom with enough counter space for everything. Here are the not so great things: 1. Upon checking in, we were told the pool was not in service. This is something the hotel should share when making reservations, not when you are at the front desk, and after you've paid. 2. The shower in the bathroom is so weak because they are using a water-saver shower head. The trouble is, instead of saving water, you have to shower twice as long in order to wash all the soap and shampoo off. 3. The blinds in the hotel room were all tangled and unusable. Not so bad during the day, but a pain in the neck at night as headlights from the cars passing by shine through as they pass. The hotel is pricy, and I don't mind paying a higher price for a great room. IMO, except for the wonderful ocean view, I think we overpaid for what we got. Would I stay there again? Probably yes, if for nothing more than an unbelievable view and a predictable room.

My friend and I stayed there for a friend vacation and everything was lovely. However, there was a couple little glitches. The pool was not functioning. It was under repair, but that was OK because the SPA was available we didn’t really miss using the pool. Also, no maid service unless you request something so I went to the front office on our first morning there and I asked for more coffee, and coffee cups, and more glasses which she did give to me after looking at me a little strangely. Then I asked if we could have someone come in and empty our trash. She was very confused and said she would try to find someone to do that or we could just put it in the trashcan ourselves outside the room. Well, on my way back to my room. I passed two maid carts and two maids that were working on other rooms. I did not say anything to them, but I did think it was strange that she thought she would have to find someone to empty our trash. Fortunately, I brought trash bags with me and we use them. Anyway , that is my only complaint. We had a wonderful time there and everyone was very helpful and friendly except for this particular young lady and we would probably go back next year.

Everything was great the only thing was the pool had a crack and had the option to use the sister pool.

Wonderful and Amazing Staff. Room and the Inn is super clean. Access to the beach. There is a pool and a spa on the property. You can find harmony and peace being that close to the beach. Amazing place and location to relief the stress from the fast paced workplace.

A four night stay. The weather was cooler than we expected. The room was conveniently located near the ocean. The pool and spa were perfect as was the fireplace. The room itself was comfortable, but the beds and carpet, not so much. We didn't ask for maid service as we cleaned up after ourselves and threw away the trash and placed the used towels in the maids hamper. The fella who checked us in on Wednesday, Zach I think, was very nice and courteous. Parking was easy, right up to the door. All in all a nice , but aged property.

Overall our stay was fine. We were notified a day before our trip that there would not be daily house keeping unless specifically requested. For the price, it seems the least they could do was empty trash and check on towels. The pool was very much in need of repair. We cut our feet on peel plaster on the floor of the pool. The fire pit area needed cleaning. Our first night we went to do s’mores, and the fire pit area was covered in crumbs and detritus. Two afternoons in a row there were no towels available at the pool area. The second fire pit with a beach view was not working. The Fog Catcher in was just in need of updates. Our room had an almost broken faucet handle. Clearly visible mold in the bathroom. The chairs in the room need new padding as they are flat. And it would have been nice to have trash emptied, but we did it ourselves. Just seems like for the price you pay, a little service would have been nice.

Excellent location! Great pool & jazzuci. We’re coming back.

Our stay at this motel would have been much better, had the cleanliness been better. The pool area and the pool were dirty and looked neglected - lots of bird feces around the edge of the pool and in the pool. The furnishings and the room itself were fine, but there was a smell in the room - not sure what it was, it was stale and never went away during our entire stay. There was excessive dust in the closet and the shelf above the shower had lots of black stuff on it, in the corners. I'm assuming it was mold, but I really don't know. The problem might be the not enough venting in the restroom and lack of the cleaning staff doing a thorough job. Everything else in the room was clean. Another odd thing was that there are no heaters in the room, other than a plug-in space heater and a gas fireplace. The fireplace kept everything warm, but the problem is that it's hard to sleep while it's on since it is so bright. The grounds overall were in good condition. There was some exterior remodeling going on during our stay - it didn't cause any problems during our stay, and it looks like the motel is trying to improve and/or repair things on the grounds. At this point, we aren't planning on staying again as there are other options in the area, but if the above mentioned problems were fixed, we would come back.

Our room did NOT look as good as the one in the picture when I booked through Travelocity. The room smelled musty, linens are average, bed skirt was ripped and the TV is cable only that seems to be stuck in the 1990's. It was hard to open the two front windows and when my husband did, there was dust caked on the window sill. The fridge has no freezer section for ice packs. We won't be staying here again. Getting tired of hotels that charge a lot of money for a bait & switch photo.

King suite was spacious. Bathroom good. Mini-kitchenette served its purpose. Property needs a little TLC and updating. Fabrics on all seating in unit was stained. Scuff marks on some furniture made it look dirty. 2 of the windows needed props to keep them slid open.

The room was not ready at check in, and was not very clean when we got into it.Some of the dirt is due to lack of deep cleaning, dirty carpet, floors and stains on comforter. We stayed for multiple days so we had to ask for more soap and toilet paper ecr. It's always fun to walk across the parking lot carrying a roll of toilet paper.

When checking in, make sure you notify desk personnel you would like to have the room made up daily during your stay. Otherwise, everything else was fine.

Room smelled musty there was an odor (they allow pets)/shower curtain liner dirty/pool was closed/no airconditioning/coffee in the office was lukewarm/bathroom floor corners were dirty/cleaning definitely needs major improvement.

Stayed in an ocean view room. Property in need of updating. No HVAC in the room, had to use the fireplace & prop open the old wood windows because they wouldn’t stay open on their own. Old worn linens, mattress lumpy

wifi was almost no existent in our room

Fireplace would go out occasionally and you would have to turn switch off and ok again.

Stayed for 2 nights, had a lovely time! The view is exceptional, the rooms were clean and spacious: with high ceilings and comfy beds. The area is quiet and there’s plenty of parking, and the boardwalk has a breathtaking view that anyone can enjoy. Overall, this hotel was perfect for our trip to Cambria!

We have stayed at Fog Catcher before and this time was equally good. The staff is courteous and helpful. The room was clean and tidy and the beds are comfortable. The room, however, does not have a temperature control. It is heated by a fireplace, which I had to turn off after a few hours because it got too hot. Otherwise a great room at a good price. We will stay here again.

The rooms are clean and comfortable. The hotel is just across from a walking boardwalk and below is the beach! The views are amazing. The bed and pillows made it comfortable in order to get sleep and rest. No AC but it’s the coast so there’s a nice breeze throughout the day. Recommend you visit.

Overall, I was disappointed. First, I think I paid a bit more for a room with a partial ocean view. I’m not sure there’s any way to specify whether you get a ground floor or second floor room. I got a ground floor room, and it’s not great. Folks walking by outside get a clear view into your bedroom and it’s a bit uncomfortable. But not a deal breaker. What really bothered me was the condition of the furniture. Chairs were horribly stained and frankly, dilapidated. I’m shocked they kept them in a room that costs over 300/night. When my fiancée mentioned the chairs, the young lady working the front desk casually mentioned they were going to be thrown away soon. Yikes. If they’re headed to the trash, maybe don’t keep them in the rooms? That leads me to my second complaint - the staff. They were nice enough. But the majority appeared to be under the age of 25. It felt like several college kids running a hotel. Nothing against young folks working an honest day, but the level of service and attention to detail was commensurate with - well - 20 year olds. Finally, the hotel offers nothing in terms of basic amenities. They claim to partner with the cow tipper down the road for room service. But the QR code on the menu didn’t work. So we tried to call them on our cell, and the cow tipper didn’t answer. Maybe the front desk knows how to order? No luck, the phone in the room didn’t work. What a mess. There’s plenty of options in the area. I cant recommend this one.

Upgraded to King Suite which was on lower level with a room above. Footfalls from above were noisy in the late night & early morning. Suggest rugs upstairs rather than hard floors which wake guests below.

i loved everything about the stay except we were on the bottom level and the ceiling was so thin it was SO LOUD. we wanted to sleep in till 8, but at 6 the people above us were up and getting checked out and by 7ish the cleaning crew was there. i know they weren’t being loud on purpose but with the thin ceilings we heard every single move! also, the chairs in the room were really stained. the fireplace was lovely and warm and we appreciated the extra heater in the room. we fell asleep with the windows open and listened to the ocean. i’d stay here again, just on the top floor!

The room was very good but the check in was diabolical. The reception was closed at 6pm with a sign saying to check in at another hotel with no direction and no mobile phone reception. When we finally arrived at the other hotel, the recptionist was having an argument with a client which was embarrassing to listen to.

From the moment we stepped into the Fogcather office to check in to the last minute of our stay, we loved every minute. Julii was so friendly and even joked with us as we checked in. June who was the manager was delightful and even upgraded our room to an ocean front. June also helped us get acquainted with local wines and even let us use wine glasses to enjoy our Hearst wine. This place is a nice delightful place, cozy and clean. Most of all those that work here created an atmosphere of warmth and welcome.

OUTSTANDING PROPERTY AND FRIENDLY STAFF.

Some rooms are a bit outdated but it’s also across from the ocean. Lots of wear and tear. I’ve stayed there many times but this last visit was horrendous and the staff was terrible. Unfortunately,on Sat night 7/27 we were running late for check in. I was confident it was ok as most hotels have office hours until at least 10p. Still on the road, we get a phone call that no one would be checking us in. Office closing at 9pm due to staff shortage. Mind you, the courtesy call was 20mins before 9pm. The staff member asked us to go check in at the sister hotel- ocean point ranch. Ok. He informed us, no one would be available at Fogcatcher until 11a the next day. I also asked if we could request late check out? The staff member said yes, to call office at 11. Ok! On our way and if you know how dark Cambria is… ocean point is further down. Fine we did it. I will until almost 11a the next morning. The gal on the phone clearly stated no. So unapologetically apologized. I’d rather her hang up on me to be honest. I then go to the office to check out and again. I told her what had happened and no form of empathy whatsoever. It was almost like she did not believe mme. She mentioned only two people are allowed late check out a day. Then told me to have a nice day. Again. No sincere apology. Not even, in sorry but I will inform the manager. Nothing this was not ok. At this point… I no longer cared about getting an extra 1 hour to check out. Really about customer service. Never again FCI

We only stayed one night but it was the friendly staff who helped us when one of our kids got sick that put it at five stars.

When I arrived, we could not check in till 8pm because the front desk was on a break. I got many emails but none alerted me to this. So I had to wait in my car 25 minutes. Coffee machine did not work. Could not turn on the fireplace. My texts to the front desk went unanswered.

Front desk girl was VERY sweet, and welcoming.

We had two major issues. First, we drove up from Los Angeles that day. We showed up in the lobby 1 hour and 15 minutes before the check-in time of 4 PM (pretty late you know). The clerk said that our room was ready, but we would have to pay $25 to use it now. Offended by their crass attempt, we told them no and went and had a drink, returning dutifully at 4 PM. Second, we had reserved their best room, facing the ocean. There aren't many. The windows facing the ocean were small and very dirty - impossible to see out in the late afternoon sun. But worse, the room has NO heating! It did have a decorative fireplace with a gas burner, but it took 10 hours to get the room to 65 degrees. Summary: You can do much better, there are many hotels on Moonstone Beach.

Awesome location across the Moonstone beach. The ocean view cannot be beat.

Friendly staff. Great location, beach across the street, great restaurants within walking distance. Room was nice, clean and comfy. This time of year (January) it was very quiet and not busy anywhere you went.

My wife and I liked the location across the street from the beach. There were restaurants within a few minutes walk.

One of the selling points on this property was the ability to have breakfast delivered from a restaurant down the road. However, the QR code to order didnt work, I tried to order for pickup through the restaurant website and it didnt go through. We ended up walking to the restaurant and it was really good! Would’ve loved for the delivery concept to have been functional

Loved the location. The last time we stayed with you guys you serviced breakfast and we loved that. Wish you could bring that back.

When I signed up for this room it was understood that breakfast was included The night before our stay I received message that the meal was not provided . Definitely false advertising and deceptive practice's

We had a pleasant but short stay at the FogCatcher, as the half-way point of a Pacific Coast Highway drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Cambria is lovely, and the FogCatcher is one of a dozen motel/inns offering the same set-up, directly across the street from the stony beach and ocean. Two issues took the FogCatcher down a star: 1. We checked in at 845pm without incident, and were given a laminated page with all the restaurants in the area, their cuisines, and closing times. There must have been 30 of them, in small 10-point font. We took this to our room, but by the time we were ready to order, it was 9:15pm. Uh-uh. Everything closed at 9:00pm. Except for one place open until 11:00pm on every day but Tuesday, the day we were there. I was annoyed that the somebody didn't say something when we checked in, something as effortless as “oh and by the way, all 30 of these restaurants close in 15 minutes, on the off-chance you’re thinking of eating dinner.” It would have saved us much grief. So word to the wise on that. 2. Breakfast was also stressful. The FogCatcher strongly recommended their “sister” motel, the Cow Tipper, promising breakfast in their restaurant or delivered to the FogCatcher with a phone call. In the morning I opted to visit in person, but after waiting 25 minutes for my single breakfast burrito, I had to ask for it to go. I can’t imagine it being delivered! Lots of other breakfast options there in Cambria - most with a view, so try them instead.

The location is just perfect and comfortable rooms with fireplace. Leave car and can hike miles with the preserve and if energetic, can walk to town. Will return when breakfast is available but until then Cow Tipper, walking distance, is good for breakfast.

Really enjoyed our room except the bed was a little soft. Good ocean view and clean and comfortable. No restaurant on site which we knew at booking and sister hotel offered breakfast delivery which we didn’t use. Quiet location.

We had a lovely time here. It’s right across from the ocean walk with beautiful views and beach access. Also next door to Moonstone Beach Cafe which is a great dining/drinking option. A quick trip down the road to the Hearst Castle, which is why I booked it. It’s pretty no frills but very clean, friendly and convenient.

Lovely property right on beach walk!! A couple of restaurants walking distance. Would be nice to have some coffee available in office and some liquid creamer. Powdered creamer is not a good option.

We have been staying at the Fog Catcher for quite some time. The rooms are nice, location is perfect, but it has lost it's sense of hospitality. Ever since Covid, they stopped serving breakfast in the morning, which other properties, including Cambria Pines Lodge, still include. Instead, they want you to purchase breakfast form their sister hotel's restaurant. On top of that, they will send you a message offering late check out for 31 dollars. This place has lost it's Cambria charm and feels more corporate. While the hotel itself is nice, we will probably stay elsewhere next time.
