Best Western Carlsbad by the Sea

Fantastic personnel at Best Western Carlsbad by the Sea. We enjoyed the time we spend there. The hot tub and pool being available after our event was a plus.

We really like the location, the room was great , the swimming pool and jacuzzi were great also , I've really enjoyed the gym and the staff was very friendly but the only thing that was very disappointing was the breakfast :( , the machine that dispensed orange juice was broken , coffee was good and eggs tasted somewhat real eggs but everything else was very basic and no pancakes or waffles , so if your intentions are to enjoyed a very basic and cheap breakfast then this is your place otherwise don't stress about it and enjoy everything else like the pool , jacuzzi and the gym and go somewhere else for breakfast unless you're on a budget so this should be ok for you .

Very spacious, easy parking, had a two bedroom and two bathroom and living room with kitchen. It was great for our family of 5. We were right by the pool on the first floor. It was not noisy at all. Beds were comfortable. Loved the full-size refrigerator. Overall, excellent stay. Great customer service. Close to legoland and the beach. We were very impressed for the cost per night. Would definitely stay there again.

My family and I were visiting Carlsbad for the weekend to check out Legoland. Pros: Great proximity to Legoland. Pool/hot tub were perfect Cons: Due to its proximity to the freeway, it wasn't very quiet. Rooms always felt damp/had no ventilation unless you opened a window/ran the fan. While the pool was great, towels weren't always available (luckily we brought our own). Wish the shower tiles were cleaned better. TVs need to be updated. Overall a decent stay for a short trip.

I did not like that fact that the toilet clogged and I had to walk to the front office to get a plunger and then return it. The room was loud, the pool was full of algae and couldn't be used. The Jacuzzi was much worse. Won't stay here again.

The room was very musty smelling to where we had to have the windows open most of the night to breath. Our crib wasn't put in our room per our request so we had to bother the poor front desk lady And her manager who was there when we got there (around 6 PM) and when we left (past 7 AM). The toilet was clogged from before us and the bed was very springy to where my wife and I could feel every bit of each other's movement. The "hot breakfast" had two hot items (bagged eggs, and cheese potatoes - no meat) and otherwise a continental breakfast. The whole building has settled so the room and deck were signifcantly bowed (the dresser drawer would not shut due to this) and tilted too. The pros were that it is a decent (and seemlingly safe) location (if you don't mind the noise from Interstate 5 right across from the motel) and it looked like it was a nice pool and hot tub. The room other than the smell and bowing was ok too and seemed clean enough with a recent remodel of a few things. If you don't mind a strong musty smell, possible toilet clogs, a lack luster breakfast, and seemingly overworked staff if something goes wrong, then this might be an option for you. I would say this is a 2 and a half star motel at best - not a 3 star so if you are looking for a 3 star experience, look elsewhere. And if you have a postpartum wife who wants a 3 star experience DEFINETLY LOOK ELSEWHERE!!

This would be a great hotel for a low income family with a limited budget. Close proximity to the beach and Lego Land. But it’s a dump. 1. Noise-it’s right next to highway 5, and the noise was a problem. 2. Cleanliness—room smelled musty and bathroom had ants, 3. Kitchen-No plates, cups, utensils 4. Furnishings-old and beat up. The “couch” is not a couch, it’s an uncomfortable vinyl bench. I chose this place because the good properties were priced way high (holiday weekend) Never again

When I first entered my room, I was greeted with a pungent scent of pee and sweat. It smelled horrible and unpleasant. The door was also broken, so I had to call someone to fix it. The hair dryer was dusty and dirty. 0 stars!!

The lobby smelled like a smokers house. The guy upfront wasn’t friendly and very awkward and short worded. The ice machines didn’t work. The screens on each said ice machine is off. Our room smelled old and musty. The carpet was black and stinky.

Overall not the cleanest hotel, spider in bed at check in, bathtub had rust on certain areas there was bugs in bathroom next to tub and hair in several areas of rug

The room decor is terribly outdated and depressing. The carpet is disgusting. The bathroom and bed are nice.

My room had 2 mice! I checked out that same day and asked for my money back and they said they couldn't do it right at that moment due to not having a manager on call. They mention they would refund me my money and after a few days I called and it was never processed. So they said it would take a couple of days for my refund and they confirmed the card on file and nothing. It's been almost 2 months!

I've stayed here quite a few times never had a problem but this last time I was laying in bed writing some notes on my phone for work I looked down and there's a mouse. Staff was friendly and promptly gave me a new room Staff said that they have had problems with it in the past and that they would have maintenance check the room in the morning.

Stayed there almost a week. I wanted to love it but unfortunately this was a terrible experience. The staff was amazing from the several receptionist I interacted with including the staff attending breakfast. The property it self needs major pest control as soon as possible and good luck getting hot water to shower.

We had a room that faced the highway and it was pretty noisy. I asked to be moved for our second night and we were given a room that faced the pool. It was amazing! The front desk staff was very responsive. The breakfast bar was clean and nicely stocked. However, we hoped for some waffles or pancakes and missed the breakfast meat. We could have used more gluten free options. The staff there was very friendly and cheerful. It was a good way to start the day!

Receptionist was quick to give me another room since the A/C in the first room I was in didn't work.

This was a nice hotel, but should be called the Best Western I-5. We could literally throw a rock and hit the freeway. The sound of cars and trucks flying by all night was not soothing. And they gave us 4 throw pillows instead of bed pillows. Who does that? That said, it was clean and the beds were comfortable. Just take pillows and eat plugs.

Despite being in a room facing the freeway this stay was amazing, and we could barely hear the noise outside. Great beds, tvs, WiFi, shower, in room coffee, free breakfast, and great staff.

We have stayed here before so i had an idea what to expect. Room is spacious, bathroom is clean and well stocked and we always appreciate the space of the kitchenette and “lounge room.” Bed was cozy. My only irritation was is our room was closer to the freeway this time which was white noise i couldn’t block out.

The room overall was okay. It was dark outdated and the faucet for the bath tube in one of the bathrooms did not work. It did have a small kitchenette but you have to request silverware and cookware from the front desk. What I did like was there was two bedrooms and two bath in the room we stayed in, allowing for some space. The time spent with the family was important, so the stay overall served its purpose.

Big rooms

I stated a total of 4 days at this property - or about 90 total hours. The internet went down no less than 10 times - and from Friday night through to my check out Sunday it was totally down. I was trying to work/do zoom calls and BW totally failed me. The rooms themselves were more or less Motel 6 quality. This property sits literally on the Freeway so you must be ok with non stop highway 5 traffic noise. For the amount of money they charged for such a poor experience - I felt robbed. When I tried to explain my displeasure at checkout - I was told the General Manager would call me. Well of course. No call at all Will never stay here again - management of this property clearly do not care about the satisfaction or comfort of their guests. Sorry

Rooms are small. Whirlpool did not work. Breakfast was great!

All was great. People at desk when we checked in were friendly and helpful.

The TV would work and maintenance was gone for the day, and desk personnel were no able to help. We changed rooms with a working TV. Room was not serviced the next day, and desk staff said we had not requested that it. Confused we did get a complement of fresh towels. Definite plug problems in both rooms. Rooms are poorly maintained. We will not stay there again.

I booked through Expedia and when I arrived the clerk confirmed my room as one queen bed but that was not correct, I reserved and paid in advance for 2 queen beds and even showed her my booking details to which she's told me they were completely booked and there was nothing she could do. We went back and forth a bit and she said it's because I used a third party to book and I reminded her that Best Western does business with Expedia and as a consumer I should be able to trust that partnership. I asked so what is done in this case? Do you just displace paid guests or am I going to be refunded and she said I would have to take what they have or lose the money because I pre-paid to a third party so she could give me a refund!!! She offered me a foldaway bed IF they had one "at no extra charge!" I about lost my mind so she said I can give you a $10 discount! I was floored and asked to speak to a manager but she said there was not one onsite, lone and behold she miraculously for a room with double beds in a Suite, and I would not be charged for the "upgrade" SMH but I was grateful because my infant nephew was already getting cranky needing a nap. When I sent to the room, I opened the door and was greeted by a strong musty odor, the appliances were all banged up and clearly have seen better days. The beds and bathroom were decent. The room was on the first floor closet to the freeway so it was a bit loud but not a big deal, sofa was also dirty. Overall NOT a good experience

Front desk agent was very friendly and helpful. Check in was smooth and room was available as early as 2:15 PM. She was clear about breakfast hours and room location.

The front desk agent Amaris was extremely rude and unprofessional We asked for an early check in and when that was not available I asked her if I could store my bags until check in She was very upset that I asked and she said I could leave my bags in the lobby, as they don’t have storage I have never been treated so poorly at a hotel of any kind! I especially did not expect this from the Staff of BEST WESTERN They need to conduct training for customer service for the front desk agents as this is part of their job, to ensure that the guests are treated appropriately at all times!!! I will never stay at a BEST WESTERN again!

We stayed 3 nights in a suite though we did not use the kitchen facilities. A $50 deposit will get you the pots and pans, dishes and silverware. A short walk to several restaurants, a grocery store, and South Carlsbad State Beach. Good breakfast choices, a little different each day.

This is a wonderful hotel. I would encourage the bosses, however, to put someone at the front desk who is more friendly and willing to be helpful. The young lady who currently staffs the front desk is very cold, does not smile, and seems unwilling to bend just a little. Though check-in is technically at 3:00, most hotels bend a little, especially when their guest is coming from a long way off— they allow you a few moments of grace. She would not. We are seniors who were exhausted after an 8 hour drive … we arrived at 2:10. She made us wait in the lobby until 2:35 and then announced we could check in. She seems very unhappy and not an ideal person to be welcoming guests. I think she just needs some encouragement to be friendlier and more helpful. Otherwise, everything else was exquisite !

Easy walk to south beach. Outlet malls with dining options close. Easy access to I-5. Very helpful staff. Family friendly. 4th year in a row staying here. Love it!

It is a budget property right off the 5 freeway. You can hear road noise in your room. The area is not walkable but about 10 minute drive to legoland and 5 minute drive to the beach. The room smelled funny and the tv was very old and difficult to use. The breakfast was ok and my room was fairly clean.

Everything was great. Just wish it was shorter walking distance to ocean.

The room wasn’t large and had a slight musty smell but was very clean. Luggage carts only available near lobby. Freeway is loud. Beautiful pool and jacuzzi and warm enough to swim at night. Best part was the person who prepared the breakfast, such a beautiful soul. And the breakfast was delicious, from the hot, fluffy yummy eggs, potatoes and all of the other choices.

Room was very noisy with loud a/c and plumbing noises all night. Couch was extremely uncomfortable to sit on. Would ask that Best Western place a note on bathroom wall explaining how to turn shower on. Interesting fixtures. Worst coffee in our room and no better at breakfast! Lucinda the sweet older gal taking care of breakfast room was working like Mighty Mouse! We were not happy, as there was no tea, milk, juice, or yogurt and very limited items, because “delivery did not arrive”. Manager should have been in there to explain things and assist!! This was a disappointing stay for us.

There was no meat with breakfast just powdered eggs & potatoes & dry grits - not worth it ended up at Ruby's diner awesome breakfast & filling

The breakfast experience is horrible. The breakfast closes at 9am. They will start removing the things starting 8:30am. By 8:50am most of the breakfast and accessories are packed up and told that your table needs to be emptied by 9am to start mopping. I stayed for 2 days and had the same experience on both days. Elevators are so old that no buttons (inside and floor level) will turn on. You just have to trust that it will work.

Decent for the price. Room, pool, and breakfast were all fine. Staff was mostly nice and helpful. Breakfast was a little redundant after 3rd morning, but still fine.

Great location! The 2 bathrooms and 2 king beds along with the kitchenette were extremely comfortable, convient, and just perfect for us. All the staff that we encountered were kind, friendly, professional, and helpful.

Everything was good except same breakfast each day.No good no bacon or sausage one day oatmeal next day grits.Same eggs same potatoes.Breakfast needs some upgrades. Other than that good hotel.

The reviews said the breakfast was a great experience, HOWEVER, when I got there, they only served a half breakfast consisting of just scrambled eggs, cheese every other day, cereal, milk, canned fruit…what happened to protein (bacon/sausage), and carbs (hashbrowns) and actual fresh fruit? Seriously…WHAT!

This property was among the best where we have stayed. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The included breakfast included hot foods that varied each day. The hot tub was amazing. We highly recommend staying here if in the Carlsbad area.
