Scandia Motel

we wanted something close to downtown, walkable to the beach. we pretty much just needed a place to sleep. if you are most comfortable with Marriott level accommodations, you will likely not be in love with the Scandia. if you want a friendly, clean, comfortable place to sleep and don't need much in the way of amenities or modern up to date styling, this is your place and you can't beat the price. 2 ½ block walk to either downtown or the beach. easy access to the freeway. microwave and fridge in the room. great mattresses. decent sized room (double queen).

Parking here is super secure and there is always plenty of it. You don't really have to worry about a spot even if you arrive late. It's super quiet and peaceful. This place has some of the best rates you can find in a highly desirable area of north San Diego.

You.cant beat the value for your money. Staff is awesome. Rooms are clean. Not fancy. No pool, free coffee, etc , but its incredibly inexpensive for the area. Beach and cute shops are fairly close. Fyi train is behind the motel, but it has never woken me up. I stay 3-4 times a year.

Great little find! So close to everything. Great little area for the dog. Perfect parking. The room was very nice with plenty of plugs and counter space. Very clean. Will stay again!

The Scandia is in a good location. Walking distance to stores, restaurants, the beach. Facility is older and some may be turned off, but if you need a good value, basic room, I would check it out.

I stayed at the Scandia Motel for almost a month. The staff are very friendly and took care of everything; the only thing I had to do was ask for an Internet code! The room was very clean, modern, and non-smoking. There is a smoking area on site and parking was really easy. What really stood out was the staff. When I saw them as I walked to my car, they often asked if I needed extra cleaning or towels; they took an interest in how my stay was going and if I wanted to extend. If I had been in town longer, I would have. I’ll stay here again, for sure.

The location was amazing. Only a few minutes walk to beautiful beach in Carlsbad. Quick check in and plenty of parking . The rooms were clean and good size. The most affordable hotel in Carlsbad with one of the best locations

The negatives would be very limited parking, WiFi signal and some of their policies you won’t find out about until you arrive. The positives are location, the rooms are good {everything works with plenty of electrical outlets} and it’s quiet. If you arrive and park early and don’t drive away later, don’t need their WiFi and are only starting a night or a weekend you’re likely to be happy. If not, you might have some issues

The room was not really clean. If I walked barefoot, my feet turned black. I stayed 4 days and my room was cleaned twice. That said the employees were lovely. The motel is .3 miles from the Village and walking distance from everything. The nearby beach is super accessible. I prob would stay there again but maybe bring a Swiffer wet jet.

Got the queen bed room- price and location good other than that HORRIBLE! So tiny, old not clean. You get two thin stain towels, one hand towel and one washcloth. Stains on sheets pillow case. Toilet runs all night, not sound proof, you can hear everything. They are doing a new roof, no mention of that. Asked front desk for towels and was told maybe to now when cleaning comes in. I would not and do not recommend.

Would not stay here again. My room was not clean, the walls and floors were filthy, there was clearly mold growth under the bathroom sink, and there were questionable stains on the comforter of the bed. There was only one lock on the door and it did not feel secure. I didn’t expect this to be a luxury experience or anything but overall it was not even close to the images shown on Expedia.

The room was clean with a fridge and microwave. The bathroom was nicely done with a roomy shower. I got a great price and was comfortable.

Very clean rooms super nice staff!

Most disgusting room ever! The bed sheets were covered with what looked like flakes of skin or crumbs. Pillows had yellow stains on them that they tried to cover with pillow case. Mattress had stains as did bed cover. Checked out within 20 minutes of arrival and will be asking for a refund.

Location is PERFECT for the beach or just going out in down town Carlsbad! However the room was pretty dirty. Thank god my sister brought her own sheets because there was bodily fluids in the comforter and holes from what looked like cigarettes. We didnt spend much time in the room so it was perfect for a place to rest your head but come prepared.

It was a spacious room with a kitchen which is good and super close to the beach.

The motel is good value, and is only a short walk from the beach and town center. The beds were comfortable and we've had good experiences here before. For those reasons we were happy to overlook a few minor issues like no soap or shampoo, and the walls being not very well soundproofed. More annoying on this visit, and its main shortcoming, was the wifi which was insecure and intermittent. Also very slow at times, and didn't work at all for us nearly half the time. As long as the motel fixes that, we would gladly stay here again the next time we visit Carlsbad.

Paid a bit more for larger room, but much preferre the smaller, cleaner

The rooms are actually beautiful! Bathrooms are new and the pricing is exceptional for the area! It is within walking distance of restaurants and shopping! The WiFi worked in the office but never worked in my room. It wasn’t a problem as I didn’t need it! There is a train that comes quite close; however, the noise is only temporary. It didn’t bother me. The staff were very nice as well!

Close to all the tourist attractions in Carlsbad village, as well as Carlsbad beach. The room was in decent shape for the price. There are definitely worse in north county. The motel is right next to the train track, so there is train noise. Overall though I enjoyed walking around Carlsbad from this location

Great location. Decent rooms. No closet or hangers for clothes. Shower water pressure really low and takes a while to turn hot. If you just want a great location and not a nice room, it’s for you

It's an older motel that's been upgraded so it's modern. The trains aren't too bad, but you can still hear them, even though the ad i saw said the rooms were soundproofed. Luckily the trains go by fast and seemed to be short.

A place to lay your head. Nothing special

The rooms feel dated and could use some fresh paint. There are broken tiles on the shower wall, and a train passes nearby every three hours, even in the middle of the night, with its horn blaring. However, considering the price, these issues are manageable.

Loved my room got a AWSome upgrade to a even better room this place is the perfect getaway home away from home I'm so glad I made a choice to come here for a couple weeks and just relax staff here is excellent management is beyond excellent makes me feel like family very accommodating it's refreshing to know that customer service like this still exists in the hotel circuit good job Scandia motel

Sorry for grammar - 1,500 char limit Return to motel, noticed my room door was ajar & window blinds were open. Closed/locked when I left. Then noticed my unopened food & drink items gone from fridge. Open items still there. Explained to office guy, asked hm to take look, but unwilling, rude & grumpy. Provided list of taken items & my mobile #. Told hm I had photos of rm, showing that housekeeping had clearly svc'd the rm (new towels, bathmat hung, etc.). Said he would pass to mgmt but I never got a call. When chk'g in, noticed rm door was difficult to open & had to pull hard to lock it. My guess is housekeeping left door ajar when servicing rm. Then someone entered to take items. Also, while out for walk on 1st day, noted several men milling around area. Asked one guy in park'g lot for directions to beach. Nice guy. Told me was living in vacant property next to the motel using CA homeless vouchers. Hope he was not guy who took the items, but clearly people casing the joint looking for opportunities. I booked 3 nights. After experience, told office guy was checking out and to please refund nights 2&3. Also, reimburse $35 for taken items. Never heard back. Later messaged motel via Expedia Msg'ing, providing all info above. Never heard back. That was 2-1/2 wks ago. Contacted Expedia, providing all info and photos. They contacted motel, but Scandia refused to refund for 2 unused nights or reimburse $35. So posting information as an Expedia review so others can be aware.

I love staying here. It’s clean, comfortable and very safe. The family who runs this motel are super friendly.

Worst hotel experience ever! Checked in & went into our room to find it dirty & with cigarette smell, even though they claim that it’s a “non smoking room”. I couldn’t stay in those type of conditions due to me being pregnant as well as having my husband & 2 year old with me. Went back to the desk to try & get another room

Please update your website because it says the rooms have coffee maker and ours did not. Some of the lights didn’t work, and the TV did not work at all. Location is convenient and great as walking distance to Carlsbad Village. Staff is nice. The place seems to invite some weird people, some maybe even unhoused. I’m saying all this not to hurt your feelings but to update these little things and may attract better customers. I expected more as your website seemed so inviting.

The Proprietors and Staff are — without a doubt — incredibly individuals whose priority is to ensure their guests have the best possible experience while visiting. A suggestion, if and when you have the opportunity to become guests at the Scandia Motel, take the time to actually introduce yourselves to the Proprietors, and you’ll not regret it!

The service from the front desk has horrible from check in to check out! At check in the clerk qas rude and unfriendly. About 5mins before checkout time he bangs on my door telling me i have to leave and turn over the key & tv remote. The only good things i have to say about the place is that aleast its close to the beach. The housekeeper is super friendly and she was very gracious.

One of my favorite places to stay especially due to the great service from the wonderful couple at the Front Desk. Always very professional, thoughtful and kind! This is why I come back weekly! 🙏🤗

They were incredibly rude and scammy. Didn’t return full $100 deposit and when I called they said they charge a processing fee if you use credit or debit card. Nothing wrong with the way we left the room at all. The guy also kept threatening to charge me more because my friend dropping me off had a dog in the car. I told him the dog was not staying in the room. Basically, just be weary and know they keep $8 of your security deposit for no reason unless you pay cash oven though we booked and paid through Expedia. The room was okay, what you’d expect of a super cheap motel.

I had my doubts when I saw the motel due to its age but everything worked in the room as expected and the room and bed was comfortable. It’s just a couple of blocks from the village area so you can walk everywhere.

Location, location, location! Don’t forget earplugs, cause there are busy train tracks located nearby.

Great value in an excellent location. If your on a budget, its hard to beat the value in Carlsbad. Yes, if your a light sleeper, the street noise can be a deterrent. But you can bring ear plugs. Very walkable too many options. Staff pleasant & professional, rooms clean, updated & comfortable. Good cable tv options. Yes the walls are thin, but your not at the Marriott. I've stayed many times & will stay again in the future.

Convenient location that is close to the beach and local activities. Basic amenities, but great price comparatively! The room was cozy and I didn’t hear much noise or traffic. Walked to every planned destination for the weekend. I definitely recommend, and will stay another time.

Friendly manager at the front desk explained at my check in I got thr last room avail. No singles left so I get 2 beds. I only pay the single bed rate I reserved. Several people that stayed here before told me about how nicely furnished with great room prices, on a bus route, walking distance to the beach, Carlsbad Village train depot & bus stop, every Wed. afternoon The Farmers Market on State Street, walking distance for all of Carlsbad Village spots in the “Who Do You Love?” Oct 17, 2024 edition of The North County Best of 2024 Reader. It rained almost half of my stay. The housekeepers were quiet working. No slamming doors like other places. Plenty of hot water pressure for a shower not common in San Diego County. There are many nice extras. ie. a padded seat shoe bench to sit on putting on/taking off shoes with shoe storage below it. No paper thin towels. Clean & white with no stains. It appears having been renovated not long ago. I strongly recommend the Scandia Motel giving it a 5 out of 5 stars for being small, a friendly staff, not a chain motel and for its great location. Neutral on people staying/sleeping in their cars mostly backed in facing the front of my room/the far back rear of lot back of car against fence of practice field building. Some left in the mornings, some never left & were always looking every time I opened my room door leaving/returning & my car, too. They sat watching me & other guests staying in rooms around me as if we were the entertainment!

Super quiet, comfortable bed, great location. No coffee which was tough, but there are coffee shops close by. Things like the front of the fridge and the bathroom doors need a good clean. I would stay here again for the price that was listed the day I checked in. Friendly mom and son. Great for Carlsbad 5000 runners, really close to the start line.

Simple, excelente location, close to everything and affordable. Recommended if you're more and outdoors person, looking for a place to sleep and shower.

Disappointed in the cleanliness of room. Beat up walls and patches with no paint. Pictures on internet show coffie pot on table and apon room inspection did not find one. Office had a machine but was signed 9ut of service. When I asked was told coffie was avaliable for purchase down the street. We loved the location for the beach and village walkability. I was confused on the service animal requirements due to my dog is still in training for that purpose and I have no registration yet. I was going to keep him in my truck and was pleased to find out that for a fee I could room him with us. I gladly paid this for the occasion

The room was clean and comfortable. The motel was very close to the downtown area which had a lot of great places to eat and hang out.
