Sunset Inn

This place is terible. Dead cockroach on windowsill. Hole in wall. Filthy room, feet were black after walking on the floor. Exposed wire in the room. The pool was closed with green water. We changed to a different hotel for the second night of our two night stay. When checking out early the clerk blurted out "you're not getting your money back".

Parking was very convient and staff waa pleasant

Filthy. Burn holes in the sheets and blanket. Mold in bathroom. Towels dirty. No breakfast as stated on website. Rude clerk. Unsafe.. pool Literally had black mold in it. SCARY. We didn’t stay. Clerk slammed little door in our face. My amazing credit card company reimbursed us. NOT Expedia or hotel. Never heard back from either.

Expedia ad said there would be a gym and continental breakfast and neither are available, this needs to be updated for accuracy.

Very misleading advertising and photos! We booked a room for 4 adults and a teenager. The room boasted of “sleeps 5”, ocean view, and daily breakfast provided. The hotel is 10 minutes from the beach-no ocean views! When we got there they told me they had two rooms for us to choose from: one with a missing bathroom door, or one with a broken key card reader which they would have to open the room for us any time we wanted to re-enter the room. The pool was only open 7am to 7pm and a manager had to let you into the pool. We didn’t even see a pool! We asked where we would go to get breakfast in the morning and were told “you buy snacks from the vending machines and you can warm them up in your room’s microwave” When we got into the room (we chose the one with broken key card lock) we tried to double bolt the room from inside but the bolt lock WAS FORCIBLY REMOVED! We also noticed that our “sleeps 5” accommodations was a lie. There were only two queen beds and ONE chair. We went back to the desk and were told “we’re out of roll-in beds. Come ask us tomorrow”. I had to show them my reservation promised an extra bed and I was not letting my son sleep on the floor! I then stated if they can’t provide an extra bed then they had better have an extra room for free to accommodate us! They came to our room later and brought in the roll-in bed. The bathroom only had three towels! And the ceiling was noticeably poorly repaired. The bed frames were missing bolts and falling apart!

Dirty, cockroach in the room

This room was not to enjoy staying in it was only to crash out for the night. The room needs some updating the wood floors look like they were water damage so they were warped in certain areas. There was there was only one towel so I had to go to office and ask for extras. When we enter the room it smelled really musty and moldy.

This was obviously a nice property in its day. However we booked a room for five, but the room had only two double beds, and the staff member did not offer to help us any further, but simply said we could cancel and go elsewhere. The shower ran hot only briefly, so most of us had cold showers. Most of the lights did not work. The floor was filthy - our feet were black after walking on it barefoot.

At checkin our room was not clean. The floor was so dirty the bottom of my feet were black just from walking around the room. There was dirt and crumbs under the bed. The towels were not clean.

Our room had a lot of mold and smelled bad, the shower was also moldy and had cockroaches, and the breakfast they offer, they don't give it. The truth is, it was a nightmare to stay there. I don't recommend anyone stay in that so-called hotel.

We did not stay - the room was filthy. I have requested a refund as we had to pay to stay some where else. I do not mind staying in an older place that is clean but this room was very dirty! The air conditioning unit was full of dust, the floor was filthy & the sheets had been slept in & left dirty. I have never experienced this anywhere before & hope to never have it happen again.

Non-existent amenities, no fridge in rooms as advertised. Lobby is closed off and sealed. Rooms are disgusting, stains on beds and curtains. Hot water didn't work and shelves in bathtub seemed to have been broken off.

There was blood on the wall in the bathroom it was disturbing

The ac did not work and there was a hole in the wall next to it with daylight coming through. So at night I wasnt sure if someone was peeking through because it was dark at that point. Staff at check-in was nice. Bad furniture, but it was cheaper in cost than the rest.

I stayed upstairs and the room had cathedral ceilings and was really spacious and nice. I extended many times and will definitely come back when I’m in this area.

The toilet was not clean, hot water runs out fast, the tv is small and has cable but not the best selection of things to watch. There was a guy sleeping outside by the stairs he didn't cause any problems but still something to note. Aside from that the room was great it came with a king bed which was nice. The room was spacious, the outlets came with USB connection.

Updated AC unit would be nice

Ac didn’t work, room needs a major upgrade or remodel. Photos did not due room justice.

A good stay for the night. Only had some slight noise disturbances around midnight from the room above, but the front desk handled it right away.

Comfortable room and bed

I really liked the big room, the bed was super comfortable, the WiFi is great for gaming, the staff are so nice and accommodating. My issue is with the air conditioning. It never seems to get cool. It was nicer outside than in the room. I was sweating. We moved rooms and it had the same problem.. I can't stand heat.

The room was stinky and noisy.

I stay here when im in town for work. Since im self- employed i always try to go where the lowest rates are to save money. And for the price you really cant beat this place. I noticed they have updated the rooms with new furniture as well since my previous stay here.

The initial room they gave me the lock was not programmed right. They came and tried to reprogram it and the room looked nice inside. Then they gave me another room. Disgusting furniture was old TV was leaning against the wall. Bedspread had burn holes in it from cigarettes. And there were addicts, stumbling all over the property Very unsafe

I did not appreciate having to pull out my wallet outside of the office because the clerk wouldn't open the office door and let me in. She refused to open the door and told me, "that is your problem not mine." Ironically the Costa Mesa PD was on the property escorting someone off the property so be careful and I would not recommend bringing your family or female companion here at all.

Great staff and super helpful. I was visiting this particular motel as I periodically need quiet for work related activities and this ticked all my personal boxes. Thank you for the privacy, inquiry to me for anything I might need and general hospitality.

Avoid at all costs! False advertising, unsafe area and wired room setups. We were given 3 separate key cards that did not work, each time returning to front office to see if new set would work. In the end the manager had to use the master card to unlock and said she would need to replace the machine which did not happened, so we had no key cards to enter room. We were basically trapped. Spend a little more money and stay somewhere else

The Managers Mike and Meensha are wonderful hosts even during full interior renovations of all of their rooms it was peaceful throughout my entire stay. I would highly recommend the Sunset Inn for anyone needing a Staycation, family and friends visiting from outside the area or anything in between. I give the Management and the property 5 + Stars for a First Class operation and attentive extremely professional and personalable staff!! My hat goes off to Mike and Meensha once again for an extremely pleasant stay. I will definitely be returning soon.

They do not have a reception you interact thru a little tiny window in the site say they Ofer breakfast that’s why I book there and they do not have it since long time ago I ask if they have coffee makers the girl in the reception said I will send one that NEVER happens please look for another place they accept dogs the place is full of pee in every corner on the property the fridge was frozen they do not even give water bottles .

The gentleman at night time was very welcoming checked me in really fast. When I checked out the lady was very friendly. Overall the hotel was very clean and spacious. Willl definitely stay here again

It took us moving through 3 rooms over 2 nights to find an acceptable room. We arrived around 10 on Friday night to be shown a room that had holes the walls and doors. We asked to be moved so they gave us the room next door. At least it had no holes and a comfortable bed but the next morning we found the shower did not work. So at 9 am we went to asked to have a room with a shower. The desk clerk said come back later after housekeeping was able to clean rooms. We came back about 4 hours later and she said we had waited too long. After a long discussion and her realizing we were not going to go away until we were satisfied we showed us an acceptable room for our 2nd night stay. The sunset inn advertising said breakfast included but when I asked they said they have not done that for over a year. They allow dogs and there was dog poop all over the place. We will not be using this hotel again for future trips.

Staff is very friendly. The room is nice and big with a comfortable bed. Free on demand TV. That was cool. I really like that its walking distance to the triangle and close to a number of restaurants, bars, bowling, and a movie theater. Very convenient location.

Good for what we needed to stay close to balboa for family function

Property didn’t have a very inviting feel once I pulled in as there were cop cars followed up by Orange County Crime Investigative Bureau vans within the parking lot, and random individuals sitting around with objects like beaten up bikes and random stuff giving the impression that they were homeless or they lived there or something. Wasn’t very inviting. Also when I got into my room the toilet appeared to be clogged as I went to the restroom and as soon as I flushed it was clogged. The area outside the resort was nice and my room itself was nice. But just looked kind of dumpy from the outside and definitely didn’t give the best first impression that’s for sure. Not sure if I would return or not.

Too many homeless and drug users around the area or on the parking lot. Did not feel safe. But inside the room very clean.

It was quick and easy to get back and forth from the beach. The property was quiet and the staff was nice I’d definitely stay here again especially for the price.

Big, king size comfy beds. Rooms are spacious. Place is safe for the most part. Comes with a fridge and microwave so that’s good. Pet friendly as well! Nothing to complain about honestly. It’s close to downtown cost mesa with nice restaurants and bars.

The property is conveniently located and the staff was great. My room was very big and very clean but the exterior felt unsafe, people acting weird, walking around knocking on doors and people talking close to our room at night. If the exterior wasn't an issue, I would have given 5 stars but overall is a good place to stay. Comes with fridge and microwave and receptionists always very nice and courteous.

Property stated breakfast but was not offered!

EXPEDIA --- THIS PLACE IS A FRAUD!!! On your website, it says Free Breakfast and a Gym. The property had neither! When I asked the guy who checked us in, his reply; "When haven't had breakfast since COVID!" That was five (5) years ago! So fix the false advertisement already! The bathroom had a terrible urine smell when we got in, so I used Clorox to mop the floor . . . it didn't help! Went out and bought some MOTH BALLS to leave out on the basin counter and it helped TREMENDOUSLY! Cigarette burns all over the bedding but the kicker was this: We asked for 2 more washcloths and 2 more bath towels because we are two people. The cleaning ladies called the manager to come to our room to tell us that we cannot get more towels! You have our $50 deposit, if we want take the towels, then keep our deposit --- but NO ONE would even want to take the towels . . . they were that BAD! WON'T EVER COME TO THIS PLACE AGAIN! Expedia, take this place off your site!

There were people staying at the hotel who made me feel uncomfortable. Since I was with my husband I was willing to stay, but I would not recommend this place for a woman traveling alone. I got the feeling the hotel was renting rooms on a monthly basis and one guy had his belongings strewn all over the walkway. Even though the website said breakfast was included, the person at the front desk said that they were no longer doing breakfast. On the plus side, the room was nice and big, the flooring and bathroom counters looked really good.

The room looked nice but the tv remote was not working and more importantly the Air Conditioning was not working. We asked a couple of people that were also staying there and their AC was also non functioning. It's July and very warm. A non functioning AC is absolutely horrible. Also they lied about having a continental breakfast. None. Totally false advertising. Will never stay at The Sunset in again. Don't get fooled by the pictures.

When I reserved the room there said breakfast included and they didn’t have breakfast available, and we have to change the room because the smell of cigarettes was awful, so next time be clear if the place have or not breakfast or the amenities that expedia put in the choices
