The location is fantastic! The hotel have free parking.The breakfast was a disappointment to say the least! The only choice was bagels and butter!!! I went to breakfast 1 hour before it closed. The room was humid do to poor air conditioning.

My husband and I stayed 2 nights while exploring Santa Barbara. Very convenient to the harbor and State Street, with its fabulous dining. Parking in the lot can be a challenge but street parking is available. Check-in was at the lobby of the hotel next door for some reason. The hostess was nice but I don’t think she ever made eye contact with me. Our room was quaint with the 2 queen beds as requested. I didn’t have a very comfy bed (I used 2 pillows which were both pretty flat) but husband was fine in his bed. Amenities were limited - shampoo/conditioner/lotion and one small round of soap in the bathroom. Refrigerator, small microwave, ice bucket with 2 plastic cups. I wish I could’ve opened the bathroom window to let steam from our showers out (no fan) but it appeared to have been permanently locked. All in all we would stay again just for the convenient location but it is pretty no frills.

The office is being run by staff at another hotel. It is impossible to query charges to bill after departure. There are no closets in the rooms. Not even a hook. No sound-proofing. Nice old tile throughout. Upper deck overlooking the ocean for all guests. Breakfast good but also at the other hotel up the street.

The panoramic view with hot tub was absolutely great! Place is a bit outdated but overall it was a great stay. We were able to walk everywhere and great dining options.

Great location just across the street from the beach. However, the hotel is about 60 years past its prime. It gives the feel of living on the sidewalk. The continental breakfast is questionable, some days they have milk, some days not. Some days they have fruit, most days not.

Comfortable and clean rooms that are Pet friendly with a large terrace for the dogs. Dog rates are $25 per pet per night which is reasonable. The location is also perfect. It is a very historic hotel, which is the vibe in SB. Pool and continental breakfast is nextdoor in the sister hotel. I would visit again....

The location is amazing, directly across the road from the beach. Several classy dining establishments are within easy walking distance. Area feels safe and fairly low key (we stayed during a weekday in the shoulder season). I can see this being busier. Parking lot is somewhat small, I had to navigate a Jeep Cherokee past two F-150s and it was very tight. Would recommend keeping it to a smaller vehicle.

The parking lot is very tight and not adequate for the number of rooms. There is no staff on site and seemed understaffed. We had to wait long periods of time to get assistance with check-in, amenities, check-out (no staff available at that time). The floor turned our feet black within the first hour of being there. The shower would not drain so we had to space out showers and turn the water off between washing and rinsing. There was no counter space for toiletries or food prep. No storage for luggage. They had to take over the chairs as there was no floor space or closet. The a/c wouldn’t cool off the room during the day. The room was not stocked with enough towels for the number of guests (provided with 2 needed 4), no extra pillows 1 each. It was a tight space with 2 beds making it difficult to get around the room. The location is great-across from the beach and a block from State Street and near the harbor. I like that it included a fridge and microwave. The pool was at the next building (too cold for the adults) but we enjoyed the hot tub.

pictures not like on expedia! a motel not a hotel! disgusting, unclean, dirt everywhere, toilet had crap from prior guest, candy on floor, no blankets, window on top of side of bed and shutters never cleaned, cobwebs everywhere, rude check in (done on property across street!), floor unsafe, half used toilet paper roll on toilet (no TP holder), half used dirty dial soap bottle on sink (no vanity), chunks of cement on floor , paint all over things on celing and room, check in gave our room key to someone else who came in our room and then apolgized, check in was rude and dirty too

The room was kind of yucky inside. It looked like they cleaned the room but it still had this dirty feel to it. Everything was old. Including the sheets and towels. The tp holder had been taken off the wall or knocked off. At least one of the towels had stains. The fire alarm had been removed. The door entering the room was damaged. Outside of the entrance smelled like urine. Unless they clean up these details we would not recommend this property.

No front desk no phones in the room 12 o’clock. Neighbors have a party till four in the morning. Dry throughout the hotel mold in our bathroom on the ceiling big patches of mold we should’ve bolted from this place, but I already paid through Hotels.com. The balcony looks like it’s ready to fall down. I’m going to call the city and complain. feces residue in the toilet when we arrived

I had higher expectations for this stay. The floors in our room were dirty and we had a broken window in the bathroom. There was a man standing out by our window in the morning trying to get back into his room. Not a hotel problem but speaks to the locals. Our room details stated there was a jetted hot tub. It’s a standard bath tub with a couple jets. I liked how close this hotel was located to the wharf and downtown state street. We made the best of our trip but I would not stay here again for the price.

The property is walking distance to the pier and the restaurant. It is pretty convenient. However, the property is really old and the walls are really thin. There is no AC unit so at night you might need to open up the windows to get fresh air and turn on the ceiling fans.

Nice place with a pretty view, the air conditioners did not cool off the room. Horrible sleep, it was hot and tried both of the different units. One was a wall unit and the other was a mini split. Both of them would not cool down the room.

That was without a doubt the noisiest room I have ever stayed in. The guests above us started having a party at 2AM that lasted till 4 AM, with noise continuing sporadically afterward.

I went to Santa Barbara to see my Neice get married. This hotel was kind of OK but ...no cups in the room, no AC but the ceiling fan worked fine. No desk which I need to do my work during trips. My Sister & her husband were in a much smaller room with no fan or other things. They were NOT happy. On the upside it is situated across from the beach and right between Chads Diner and Jeneanne's. Both GREAT for breakfast :-)

My Sister & her husband were in a much smaller room with no fan or other things. They were NOT happy. On the upside it is situated across from the beach and right between Chads Diner and Jeneanne's. Both GREAT for breakfast :-)

I try to check in around 8.40 pm., no front desk avaliable at all only small paper showed walk to next door at villa rosa to check in. After i walked there no one there either. Who ever work at front She left her phone number on the desk showed she was away for a few moment. I called her around 8.50 pm and she said she will be back in 8 mins but finally she showed up around 9.11 pm. I end up waited for her about 20 mins after she checked all of the information she said i have to pay extra fee around 29 buck on top of what ever i paid online thru hotel.com app Cuz it not cover blah blah blah. So i just gave her a card to rung it. Cuz am so drained i need to sleep. Second, i booked king bed with ocean viewed, it cost more online but no point to get it because i got room on first floor facing parking lot. I have see nothing only cars. so disappointed. Third, room was small not that clean, i found small bugs and spider inside, nosy vintage spring mattress that make super lound noise, broken toilet that keep water running all night broken second door lock, disco flashing light bulb and no closet no place to hang any cloths at all. Stay away from this place. better go where else. Overall worse of the worse experienced.

The Front Desk says that for extra payment they can upgrade us - only to find at checkout a different person said that there was no upgrade made and cannot refund money. They could not print me receipt since printer was broken. Have called them over 15 times, and they point me to a phone number to get receipt - no one picks up the call or returns call when I leave message. And Oh! - The room was smelly.

The people above of us were extremely loud. People driving around the parking lot all night. AND I paid in full via Expedia and was still charged more money from the motel for nothing. I have tried to contact them multiple times. Leaving voicemails. No response from this.

The location is excellent and the second floor patio has a great view. This old hotel has some beautiful details like tile floors and nice tile work in the bathroom. However, it’s clear they are relying on the location to sell the place and not bothering much with upkeep and service. Check-in was frustrating. We checked in on-line as requested, including giving a digital copy of a driver’s license which seemed like an invasion of privacy. When we arrived to actually check after dark (a few minutes ahead of when we had said we would), there was no sign of life at the office and a sign I could barely make out in the dark said to check in at the Villa Rosa hotel next door. This hotel had no obvious entrance but all the doors were locked. Knocking didn’t work and neither did calling the number on the door. I had to pound on a door to be let in. The desk clerk was clearly overwhelmed dealing with unhappy guests who needed things (towels, TV remotes, a new room because their first one had no glass in the window) so we had to wait to check in. Once in our room we found it clean and the windows all had glass. But the bathroom doorknob kept falling off, almost trapping me in the bathroom once. And the TV remote had no batteries so the TV couldn’t be used. By this time it was late and it seemed like too much trouble to rouse the clerk from next door to get batteries so we just went to bed. However, waking up to a beautiful view of the sunrise over the water made up for it all.

The office is being run by staff at another hotel. It is impossible to query charges to bill after departure. There are no closets in the rooms. Not even a hook. No sound-proofing. Nice old tile throughout. Upper deck overlooking the ocean for all guests. Breakfast good but also at the other hotel up the street.

The manager charge $57 more than what hotels.com listed (including all taxes and fees) and refused to refund it. If the price you see an expedia website seems too good to be true, it is! They will charge you more when you arrive. Hotels.com and the hotel will both blame eachother and profit off of this bait and switch scheme. Stay elsewhere, book elsewhere.

The room is decent, it looks like they did a makeover recently but the lights flicker and the main entry door is very hard to open. From 3-5am the upstairs neighbor sounded like they were doing and Irish dance and it was impossible to sleep. The key stopped working to enter the room and when we went to the main desk in the next building the door was locked and the phone number to reach someone had a full mailbox.

We were greeted by the most helpful and pleasant front office staff named Christina at the Villa Rosa Inn. Apparently Ala Mar is owned by Villa Rosa Inn and I think the owners also run the one across the street too. Christina was quick and efficient, yet friendly and sweet. Our room 104 at Ala Mar by the Sea was comfortable and clean. We could tell they are in the process of updating some of the door frames. Ours was a beautiful Spanish style door. Christina let us know that we were welcomed to join the Villa Rosa Inn for breakfast and happy hour. The fireplace and seating area at Villa Rosa Inn was quaint and comfortable as well. We felt welcomed by the staff at Villa Rosa Inn, as we hung out there a few times during the rain this past weekend. All in all I will stay at the Ala Mar by the Sea again. It was such a great deal for a place directly across from the ocean!!

The location is amazing, directly across the road from the beach. Several classy dining establishments are within easy walking distance. Area feels safe and fairly low key (we stayed during a weekday in the shoulder season). I can see this being busier. Parking lot is somewhat small, I had to navigate a Jeep Cherokee past two F-150s and it was very tight. Would recommend keeping it to a smaller vehicle.

The parking lot is very tight and not adequate for the number of rooms. There is no staff on site and seemed understaffed. We had to wait long periods of time to get assistance with check-in, amenities, check-out (no staff available at that time). The floor turned our feet black within the first hour of being there. The shower would not drain so we had to space out showers and turn the water off between washing and rinsing. There was no counter space for toiletries or food prep. No storage for luggage. They had to take over the chairs as there was no floor space or closet. The a/c wouldn’t cool off the room during the day. The room was not stocked with enough towels for the number of guests (provided with 2 needed 4), no extra pillows 1 each. It was a tight space with 2 beds making it difficult to get around the room. The location is great-across from the beach and a block from State Street and near the harbor. I like that it included a fridge and microwave. The pool was at the next building (too cold for the adults) but we enjoyed the hot tub.

The location is fantastic! The hotel have free parking.The breakfast was a disappointment to say the least! The only choice was bagels and butter!!! I went to breakfast 1 hour before it closed. The room was humid do to poor air conditioning.

Staff was very nice and accommodating. Great location with many things to look at. The room we had was spacious and all were very unique. The entire place was very unique and beautiful to see. The complimentary breakfast and snacks/wine were delicious.

Location of property is great. Room was dirty when we were issued room. There was one lady working desk. She was doing everything she could to make things work but seemed a bit overwhelmed. She worked to give us a new room. Older facility. Needs a fresh overhaul. Still has a very run down motel feel with a wanna be boutique style. Continental breakfast was running late. Same lady was handling everything from day before. Came about 10 minutes prior to serving time and was rushing to get items placed out and simultaneously checking out customers. Can't blame the lady, poor ownership on this place.

Great location just across the street from the beach. However, the hotel is about 60 years past its prime. It gives the feel of living on the sidewalk. The continental breakfast is questionable, some days they have milk, some days not. Some days they have fruit, most days not.

Comfortable and clean rooms that are Pet friendly with a large terrace for the dogs. Dog rates are $25 per pet per night which is reasonable. The location is also perfect. It is a very historic hotel, which is the vibe in SB. Pool and continental breakfast is nextdoor in the sister hotel. I would visit again....

This property is literally across the street from the beach, Santa Barbara Harbor, Stearn's Wharf, excellent dining and shopping. They don't serve coffee until 7am.

To begin, we arrived and it was pouring rain and the office in the Ala Mar hotel is no longer used so there's a sign to check in at the hotel next door (i assume they have a common owner) so we had to walk in the rain next door and back to check in. Also check-in is at 3pm, pretty late, points to short staffing. There was no info about wifi or any essentials (checkout, breakfast, etc) written in the room which made me have to walk next door again in the rain to get it at the front desk. The room had no coffee maker, tissues or any amenities. There was no phones to connect to the front desk and the person who's number the sign said to call not only didnt pick up, they didn't return our call. The soda machine didnt work and there was nowhere nearby that didn't require driving, which was a problem in a storm on new years eve. There's a 3 inch gap at the bottom of the door so in order to keep the heat in, we had to use one of our towels. The breakfast spread included cookies and hohos, yes, hohos. There were a few other things too, but no yogurt, bagles, toast etc, and there was like one apple. The bathroom had lots of mildew and the window didnt open so there is no ability to air out the room and so as to be expected, the air in the room was really stuffy and humid. Also, there appeared to be a blood stain on one of our towels. The location is obviously good and the outside of the building is charming, and nicely decorated but management, and upkeep seem to be pretty bad.

The room where we stayed had a nice view of Stearns What but our tub after two days had a few bugs sticking on the tub so I did not use the tub.It was dirty and had hole on the blinds, there was no towel rack to hang towel so I had to pull the coffee table by the shower to place the towels and shampoo and toiletries. No closet to hang clothes. Bathroom was small and didn’t have a vent to let out the smell. The housekeeping knocked in our room to check if she can clean but told her to come back later bc hubby was showering but she never came back. We even left a tip for housekeeping but no show

Pros: Nice location, and the staff I interacted with in person were kind. Cons: Unfortunately, the property itself is not well maintained and does not live up to the aesthetic presented online. More importantly, the customer service after my stay has been extremely disappointing. I have made multiple attempts to contact the property by phone and email regarding an erroneous charge on my credit card. I left messages and sent emails, yet I have still not received a single response or return call. Attempts were made to contact the property on my behalf and was unsuccessful, which speaks volume about the lack of communication and customer service at this property. Based on other reviews, I am apparently not the only guest who has experienced issues with questionable or incorrect charges and difficulty getting a response. I find it hard to understand how a business in the hospitality industry can operate with this level of customer service or continue receiving such high ratings. I have never experienced this level of disregard from a hotel. Regardless of how nice the property may appear, the lack of accountability and communication completely overshadowed any positives. Based on my experience, I would not stay here again or recommend giving this property your business.
Pros: Nice location, and the staff I interacted with in person were kind. Cons: Unfortunately, the property itself is not well maintained and does not live up to the aesthetic presented online. More importantly, the customer service after my stay has been extremely disappointing. I have made multiple attempts to contact the property by phone and email regarding an erroneous charge on my credit card. I left messages and sent emails, yet I have still not received a single response or return call. Attempts were made to contact the property on my behalf and was unsuccessful, which speaks volume about the lack of communication and customer service at this property.
