Cal Mar Hotel Suites

Pros: The property reminded me of the show Melrose Place. Several units surrounded a pool with vegetation. We stayed in a one bedroom unit that had a door separating the bedroom and bathroom area from the living area. In room 315 the bedroom window was next to the street, but the noise didn’t bother us. That says a lot because we live in the country and aren’t used to any traffic or pedestrian noise at night. The hotel provided the softest towels I’ve ever used. Both beds were comfortable. The couch easily pulled out to a queen size bed. Large TVs that worked great. Wi-Fi available. Full kitchen with sealed bags of ice in the freezer were provided. There is lots of shopping and restaurant options within walking distance. We visited CVS and Target several times. It is a couple blocks from the beach and within walking distance of the Santa Monica pier (wear comfortable shoes!) Don’t miss the 7th street shopping pavilion. Very cool vibe and lots of neat little stores next to a mall. The staff at the front desk was always helpful and friendly. Cons: I didn’t see an elevator so we hauled our luggage up the stairs. The room had a slight odor, but once we bought a couple of Glade plug-ins, it was fine. It could’ve used some updating, but we’re not very picky people and it didn’t bother us. The pool wasn’t heated, but since we went in December we weren’t expecting it to use it. If you go in the summer and need air conditioning double check that that’s available. Fans provided.

The Cal Mar Hotel is only 2 blocks to Pacific Palisades, park over-looking the Pacific Coast Highway, which provides you with outstanding photo opportunities of the expansive beach, the world-famous Santa Monica Pier and gorgeous sunsets! This hotel is a boutique property with all rooms having full kitchen and surrounding the small, but lovely pool. Each room has either 1 king-size bed or 2 double beds, but all have queen-size sofa-sleepers in the living room which increases the # that each room can accommodate.

I liked that they has parking on their property.

A very friendly, well maintained and presented 50s motel in the heart of Santa Monica, a short walk to the pier and the shopping district. The room I stayed in was HUUUGE with a full kitchen. The bathroom was small but the shower was hot and powerful. Some of the tiles were a bit damaged - I don't know if they were the original ones but they could have been! The whole place was spotlessly clean. There were a couple of maintenance niggles - one of the bedside lamps wasn't working and the security bolt thing on the door was loose and wouldn't have been any use were an unexpected visitor to come knocking. The pool area is lovely and the pool is heated year round, so had I had time, I would DEFINITELY have been swimming during my February trip! Everybody working there was super-friendly. I have to say, that has not always been my experience in LA. If I was to visit Santa Monica again, I would absolutely stay at Cal Mar Hotel Suites again. I can't put it better than that.

Great location. Easy walking to restaurants, pier, beaches. The rentals were a bit old with worn carpet, tile etc. But loved the spaciousness and kitchen, etc. The pool area had a nice island feel with all the lush plants and flowers.

The suite had a lot of space ie. Bedroom, kitchen, frontroom, dining rooom… would be great for families. The suite is pretty basic / outdated in decorating. No elevator but staff will assist with luggage. It’s only a couple blocks to beach and around a mile to pier. Restaurants start about 2 blocks with more downtown Santa Monica

My stay at Cal Mar was brief and I didn’t spend much time in my room but it served my purposes. I was upgraded to a one bedroom by the very nice desk clerk. The facility is certainly dated and a bit run down but it was clean and comfortable. There was a full kitchen which I didn’t really use. Their are tons of restaurants in walking distance but not super close. Charge for parking but it was a very convenient carport. I would return, for the price and convenience.

This is an apt. hotel with full kitchens. Rooms have TV. Outdoor area with pool and chairs, and lounge chairs also. Blocks to Santa Monica Beach, close to some restaurants, close to an Italian delicatessen which is very good. A nice area, close to PCH. Covered parking for a fee.

Loved how spacious our room was with a full kitchen! Pool had broken heater during our stay so that was a bummer but out of their control. Only thing that was frustrating was walls were really thin so we could hear everyone in the rooms around us.

Very clean and no bugs in room. Hot shower every day with very good water pressure. No AC in room but was okay with the overhead fans and oscillating fans. All of the staff were friendly. Plenty of parking for the guests. Our dishes were done by the cleaning staff every day. We had to buy some cooking utensils as the room didn’t have a spatula or cutting knives. Would definitely go back.

It was a great stay. Nice part of town. Comfortable. It’s not fancy but clean and a lot of space. I will be staying here again.

OLD, furniture not clean

We just returned from a wonderful stay at Cal Mar Suites and couldn’t be happier with the experience. As a family of four, we found it incredibly convenient—close to everything we needed and easy to get around. The suite was spotlessly clean, thoughtfully stocked, and had all the essentials to make us feel at home. The only minor surprise was that the photos had made it seem like one of the beds might be larger, but the suite had two double beds. Still, we made it work without any issues, and the overall comfort and convenience more than made up for it. Everyone we interacted with was so kind and accommodating, which made our stay even more enjoyable. We’re already looking forward to staying here again on our next trip!

Excellent! Clean! Fantastic location

Property was a little tired looking, but very clean. Staff nice and polite. Towels changed daily, nice fluffy towels and lots of them. Both bathroom and kitchen could do with an update. Area around pool uneven and only steps to property, struggled getting cases into and out of the room and into the reception area.

The apartment was clean and immaculately maintained. The staff were fastidious and friendly. The apartment was spacious and very convenient for the centre and the local buses

If you love the 70s Hotel California vibe (I do), this is a must stay. Spacious, clean but non-updated lodgings. Helpful housekeeping. Very memorable stay! One shabby screen hung irreparably on the window.

My family had a wonderful stay at Cal Mar. We stayed there with two teens. It was neat and quiet and still so close to the beach and downtown. For us, it was really great with the possibility to do some cooking. But please check the bed size as the beds in our suite were a little small for two persons.

We stayed in a double queen with balcony. The unit was very good and quiet. We had excellent service, especially from Jorge, Maria and Norma. Jorge is probably the best person at reception I have ever had the good fortune to meet. He made the stay perfect by making sure that all our needs were taken care of. The biggest problem at the Cal Mar is the internet, which goes out every few hours. The staff resets it, but it is frustrating. The manager said it is getting repaired at the end of January.

It was quaint that the rooms had original (from the 50s?) windows, heating, and plumbing, but windows were not very sound proof, the heater was noisy and the pilot light had to be restarted by the staff, and the toilet was noisy.

While Cal Mar Suites is a bit dated, you can't beat the location! Being only 3 blocks from the walking trail to the beach, you can't ask for more considering the cost per night. Plus, you are walking distance to the busy spots around Santa Monica. The staff is great and very attentive. The suite is a bit dated and there was not A/C. That being said, it wasn't too bad at night with the cool Santa Monica air, and the fans within the units did the trick. For price and location, this is definitely a great hotel.

the staff were friendly and the communal area pleasant. The suite was adequate but the sofa bed was incredibly uncomfortable. Unfortunately our room overlooked the alleyway at the back of the property and we were constantly awoken by bin trucks, food deliveries to the hotel opposite and the pounding of feet on the stairwell and the apartment above us.

Great location, great staff. Fabulous to have separate bedroom plus kitchen and lounge for family stay. Lovely warm pool also. Would recommend.

Awkward check in process

Friendly staff, regular cleaning, convenient for centre and beach and transport. 3rd stay so it must be good!

Loved everything about Cal Mar 2 min walk to the beach or 5 min to Montana Street high-end Melrose type boutiques, fine dining 10 min to Santa Monica pier! Carlos check me in and was nice friendly very welcoming and Rose checked me out SUPER sweet and great end to my lovely visit! Hopefully next time i get a early check! Definitely recommend to my Sister and our cousins when they visit in April! Can’t wait to go back! Thanks Rose and Carlos and Cal Mar suits!

The staff is very friendly and attentive. The property is clean but dated. The location is great. Easy walking to many food options and the beach. Great value for the area and proximity to everything.

This property is not a VRBO it should not be on the website as such!!! The check in was exactly like a hotel, and it was awful!!! I sent a colleague across the country and she had nothing but trouble. They charged for incidentals (this is NOT a VRBO) beware!!!

The staff at Cal Mar was incredibly welcoming and kind. We loved it there and would stay again in a heartbeat!! What an excellent find. The kids loved the pool and the gardens were outstanding. The best part honestly though was the staff. They ALL were just so wonderful 😊

This is a great find in the heart of Santa Monica. Close to the pier and the promenade. Friendly staff, clean rooms, full kitchen so you can get groceries at the markets close by.

Walkable to the ocean. This property is great if you don't plan to spend time in your room. We were placed in a "courtyard" room which overlooked the dumpsters for the hotel across the street. Heater in room did not work.

This is a former apt. building so the rooms are apartments. Very spacious. Had living room and dining table a and a small kitchen, 2 TV's. A small pool. About 3 blocks form the beach and close to Santa Monica Pier. Restaurants weren't that close.
