Beautiful period property with bags of character. Lovely lounge area with comfortable seating to relax and chat, have a drink before or after dining. Very comfortable bed, excellent food and so therefore excellent value for money for your stay.

Good shower, good wi fi, good dinner (although a little expensive as I paid £28.50 just for a main meal) wh8ch is more than I would expect to pay. Breakfast was okay, staff were nice and friendly. Was a full size snooker table but was disappointed I cpuldnt get a game as the 2 guys playing were a little ignorant when i asked if i could play and they said no they were having another game Dog friendly which is great if your bringing ypur dog, but not if your there for work and want to sleep and a dog what seemed like the next room kept barking. I am a dog owner and dog lover myself but !!

Quiet, traditional country hotel. Beautiful location, very helpful staff and a lovely stretch of river. Only thing that stopped me rating it as excellent was the slightly limited dinner menu- somewhat limited. Pay a little bit more for the deluxe rooms- well worth it.

We had an overnight stay at Friars Carse and it was lovely. The staff are very welcoming, engaging and good fun. The building itself felt very homely. The food was utterly divine, I would go back for the food alone! There is a well stocked bar, with various places to sit and relax. If you are looking for somewhere to stay without the bells and whistles and really good food, this is the place for you.
We had an overnight stay at Friars Carse and it was lovely. The staff are very welcoming, engaging and good fun. The building itself felt very homely. The food was utterly divine, I would go back for the food alone! There is a well stocked bar, with various places to sit and relax. If you are looking for somewhere to stay without the bells and whistles and really good food, this is the place for you.

The Friars Carse has a lot of character, which we enjoyed. We especially liked the snooker room. The grounds and walk along the river were beautiful. The staff was very attentive and friendly. We enjoyed a three-course meal one evening in the dining room, which is nice for a little splurge. While we found the room itself to be of adequate size, it was very dusty. The headboards, side tables, and top of the wardrobe had loads of dust and pet hair, as if it hadn't been cleaned properly. One of our party has severe dog allergies (prone to hives and a constricted airway when exposed to dogs), so our biggest drawback was the amount of dogs at the hotel. It seems we stayed on a night with an exceptionally high volume of guests with dogs. When booking the hotel, we didn't see any promotion of this being a dog hotel, but did see a notice after booking that dogs are allowed everywhere except the main dining room. We respect and appreciate that dogs are part of many families, but it made the main lounge and bar unusable for us. This left us with the option to be in the dusty room, outside, or dining area - as the dogs eventually took over the snooker room as well. While we don't fault the hotel for this, it's worth noting for anyone with strong allergies.

Lovely historic building in a beautiful setting, unfortunately the lack of investment by the owner is evident with grounds that need attention, chipped paintwork, mismatched furnishings, dreadful piped music from the 1930's, a breakfast that was meagre and non functioning WiFi. So much potential!

Very much enjoyed staying at this hotel. Staff were very good, even at the late time we came in at. Hotel is situated a little ways off the main road in very picturesque and ideal spot. Rooms were clean and the front area of the hotel was an amazing area to just sit in for a bit. Old woodwork with comfortable yet antique style furniture.

We stayed in the self catering and it was lovely. Beautifully clean. The meal in the evening was really nice and the staff were extremely professional and so friendly. They all made such a fuss of our dog!

What had a fabulous stay at Friars Carse. It is set in glorious surroundings, and the staff were helpful, friendly and welcoming. We staying in one of the cottages in the grounds and it was perfect in every way - clean, spacious, with all the furnishing in good order and of high quality. The food in the hotel was lovely, fresh, good portion size and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend and we are looking forward to a return visit!

Allocated a bedroom on arrival. Had to reject it as it stunk of sewage. Offered an alternative room but little improvement in standards. Filthy shower base, cobwebs on ceiling, smelt revolting. Was on a 2 night stay but upon returning to the room after 5pm on the first day, the room had not been serviced. No fresh towels, bin not emptied. Total waste of money staying in this establishment. Bedroom was dated, dirty and unacceptable standards of hygeine. Over priced for what is offered. Had to wade through thick mud from the car park to the main door. Are they for real, the management of this place or what!

Dirty and tired… but could be outstanding! This hotel has the potential to be stunning but in its current state it’s beyond disappointing. The cleanliness is poor, from the dining room to the bedroom, standards are low. Whereas the disrepair in parts of the hotel and poor maintenance is also evident. Unfortunately, I wasn’t asked how my stay was upon checkout either which is a missed opportunity for this feedback. With a deep clean, some small renovation and handy-person improvements, this hotel could be something quite special.

My room was dirty on arrival had to ask them to go clean.Had two night dinner food was of bad quality, and decided to go into town for the next two nights.In the morning asked for a omelette and said they can not make for me only what was on the menu,very disappointed will not say there again 1 plus thing was the view was beautiful my window overlooked the river .

The building and grounds are impressive. The staff are welcoming and gracious. The dinner was good but expensive. Breakfast was fine. However, there should never be any signs of mould in a bathroom and the grit around the windows could easily be addressed.

Nice Hotel, well located, great food and staff could not have been more helpful. Overall we were put in a room with a wet room which we are not keen on. Overall good but decor and carpets are looking a little tired.

Stayed here a few times most recently in the Aspen which was a lovely quiet room with a comfortable bed and nice clean sheets. Friendly, professional and knowledgeable staff who hare happy to help. Definitely would recommend.

Our stay at Friars Carse was not great at all! To start with the few pros, the hotel itself is in a beautiful old building with beautiful grounds and the main reception area is nice and keeps the character of the building. The lady that checked us out was amazing and had great customer service. However, the whole place is just in dire need of renovation! All areas out outwith the main foyer need serious attention.. the bedrooms especially. I genuinely can’t believe people pay to have a wedding here. We were given a standard double suite and when arriving to our room there was no bedding and room hadn’t been cleaned. We were then upgraded to a deluxe suite but there was certainly nothing deluxe about the room; room itself was old fashioned and cold, the bathroom was terrible, not sure who done the quality checks when these were fitted but the standard of workmanship is atrocious. However, the water pressure was decent and very warm. The breakfast is incredibly poor, continental options are almost non existent and I had to ask for eggs Benedict without the meat/salmon 3 times before eventually just leaving and not having any due to waiting 25 minutes between each try. Overall, it just wasn’t a great stay.

Deluxe rooms are clean, very spacious, comfortable beds but could benefit from a decor refresh, for example, ceiling light fittings are very basic looking and bathroom a little underwhelming but clean. Some carpets threadbare on main stairway and corridor decor needs attention - ie bashed walls. Restaurant staff mostly friendly with 1 exception who is not a 'people person'. We were very disappointed with the hotel.Our room was very run down. The mattress needed replacing as springs were coming through. The pillows were old and hard and it was thin utility bedding. The bedside lamp shade was broken. The shower had no sceen just a curtain and you had to run round to get wet. It was dusty and depressing. Breakfront was no better. Poor quality ,overcooked and greasy. We would not stay again. It is set in lovely grounds but these dont compensate for the dreadful bedrooms.

Good shower, good wi fi, good dinner (although a little expensive as I paid £28.50 just for a main meal) wh8ch is more than I would expect to pay. Breakfast was okay, staff were nice and friendly. Was a full size snooker table but was disappointed I cpuldnt get a game as the 2 guys playing were a little ignorant when i asked if i could play and they said no they were having another game Dog friendly which is great if your bringing ypur dog, but not if your there for work and want to sleep and a dog what seemed like the next room kept barking. I am a dog owner and dog lover myself but !!

Had a lovely stay. Beautiful surrounding. Peaceful and quiet. The rooms are a little tired and could do with bed skirts around bed to minimize looking at an uncovered bottom mattress. At least this was our case in Willow. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and kind. I loved the fact that people were able to bring their fur-buddies with them and it was very enjoyable to have them while having a drink in the cozy lounge. Thank you, thank you! A special thank you to Ellie and Karen as we left an Apple Watch behind they ensured we were noticed and made arrangements to pop it in the post to us in CA. Anita Jeffrey, Ojai, CA

The lady at reception was wonderful, very friendly however, the restaurant waitresses let it down, while my partner was still eating twice they came over to ask if we were finished, had no idea of the soup choice and were very inexperienced, food was lovely tho, the lady behind the bar was friendly and informative, beautiful grounds and surroundings so would definitely recommend

Our stay at Friars Carse was not great at all! To start with the few pros, the hotel itself is in a beautiful old building with beautiful grounds and the main reception area is nice and keeps the character of the building. The lady that checked us out was amazing and had great customer service. However, the whole place is just in dire need of renovation! All areas out outwith the main foyer need serious attention.. the bedrooms especially. I genuinely can’t believe people pay to have a wedding here. We were given a standard double suite and when arriving to our room there was no bedding and room hadn’t been cleaned. We were then upgraded to a deluxe suite but there was certainly nothing deluxe about the room; room itself was old fashioned and cold, the bathroom was terrible, not sure who done the quality checks when these were fitted but the standard of workmanship is atrocious. However, the water pressure was decent and very warm. The breakfast is incredibly poor, continental options are almost non existent and I had to ask for eggs Benedict without the meat/salmon 3 times before eventually just leaving and not having any due to waiting 25 minutes between each try. Overall, it just wasn’t a great stay.

We totally loved our stay, which was made even more lovely by just how friendly and helpful the staff were, in particular Peter who served us our very tasty breakfast, and Caroline who served us drinks and made us feel so welcomed. Elle who was on Reception was also just amazing and the hospitality here was some of the best we have experienced. The view of the River Nith and walks were just breathtaking and so peaceful. Although our room was on the small side we don't ever spend much time except to sleep as we were normally out enjoying the local area or walking by the River. We will definitely be staying again when in the area. Being dog friendly was also a must and bonus.

We had an overnight stay at Friars Carse and it was lovely. The staff are very welcoming, engaging and good fun. The building itself felt very homely. The food was utterly divine, I would go back for the food alone! There is a well stocked bar, with various places to sit and relax. If you are looking for somewhere to stay without the bells and whistles and really good food, this is the place for you.

Very nice hotel in fantastic location, staff were great, room was great, ibreakfast was great - t would be 5 stars if not for the dinner. The table d”hote is all that was on offer - 2 course for £34, that would be fine if the food matched the price tag. Seem to be using poor quality ingredients - I had a badly cooked bit of Hancock with some poor quality frozen peas (the hand cut fries were good) - I left half of it which should maybe have indicated there was an issue - I suspect the staff are well aware of the situation as not once was I asked if I enjoyed the meal neither at dinner or checkout. Yes I could have raised it at the time but sometimes you just think, what’s the point? Other menu choices were less than appealing - macaroni cheese as vegetarian option or steak with a £15 supplement. Really I don’t mind paying for fine dining when it is that, this was not and has a long way to go.

Most of the staff were pleasant, some left a bit to be desired. The whole building needs a lot of tlc, windows are in need of maintenance and leaking walls and ceilings. Liked the lounge, stair carpet very worn. Has an interesting history. Just make sure you check your bill before leaving.

An amazingly wonderful place to stay, full of character and in beautiful and peaceful surroundings. A warm welcome, spacious room with open views, a very comfy bed, and an excellent breakfast. A glass of wine on the bench by the river at sundown... heaven! All at a bargain price. Will certainly return.

Quiet, traditional country hotel. Beautiful location, very helpful staff and a lovely stretch of river. Only thing that stopped me rating it as excellent was the slightly limited dinner menu- somewhat limited. Pay a little bit more for the deluxe rooms- well worth it.

We were very disappointed with the hotel.Our room was very run down. The mattress needed replacing as springs were coming through. The pillows were old and hard and it was thin utility bedding. The bedside lamp shade was broken. The shower had no sceen just a curtain and you had to run round to get wet. It was dusty and depressing. Breakfront was no better. My room was dirty on arrival had to ask them to go clean.Had two night dinner food was of bad quality, and decided to go into town for the next two nights.In the morning asked for a omelette and said they can not make for me only what was on the menu,very disappointed will not say there again 1 plus thing was the view was beautiful my window overlooked the river .

Hotel is looking a bit shabby and in need of some TLC our bedroom was very pleasant and clean ,with comfortable bar we booked in for evening meal had couple of drinks before meal ordered food very very disappointed I ordered lamb my husband had steak (definitely not worth the supplement) it was very dry and a lot of fat my lamb came Yorkshire pudding was burnt they brought me another Yorkshire pudding food was warm and I couldn’t even chew the lamb waitress asked us if everything was ok and I said no sorry can’t eat it waitress took it away about 5 mins later same meal arrived still not hot and the lamb was dreadful definitely not a roast of lamb I would serve at home Breakfast wasn’t much better the next morning I had eggs Benedict and my plate was swimming in hollandaise sauce husband had full English is haggis was burnt to a crisp awful Food Sadly the food spoilt the weekend will not be back

The hotel was beautiful. Definitely recommended the dinner and breakfast. Very well cooked and presented. Room was large but bathroom could do with regrouting. Staff were lovely. Recommended staying as the grounds were stunning

We used this hotel as a half way point. Staff very friendly and attentive! Hotel needs renovation tbh. Web site makes it look in much better condition. Food while expensive for eve meal was delicious! We didn't get to try the Scottish Breakfast as on a Saturday it begins at 8am. We left at 7.30am. Historically interesting with Robbie Burns of fame being a local once upon a time.

Idyllic setting. Fantastic building. Sadly, though, owner Post Office Fellowship is letting this property decay, and failing to provide desperatly needed investment in staff and structure. Some of the employees are friendly and helpful enough (Ben's dry humour amused us and his effort was supreme), but overall the cleanliness is entirely absent. The dessicated skeletons of insects in our bathroom and the mould on every wall are testament to this. Meanwhile, the fabric of the building (window frames, for example) is literally rotting away. The complementary "continental" breakfast was simply grocery-store cereal and cheap bread. The same oblivious woman vacuums outside the breakfast room during breakfast every day. If you spend nine quid to get the "full Scottish", you must still do your own toast, which you have to put through the machine three times to get the bread beige. The doors don't shut properly, the carpets are threadbare, a dog at a neighbouring property barks all night, the single glazing doesn't open (unless it's open, then it doesn't close), and - I say again - there's mould everywhere. The toilet hs no razor socket to plug in a toothbrush. The grounds are infested with Himalayan Balsam, which is not being removed as required, and in any case the walking trails around the property, which should be a delight, are overgrown and treacherous. What a disappointment.

The hotel is a beautiful but if history and you feel like you step back in time when you go there. The grounds and beautiful and would make for some amazing wedding pictures. The rooms are in need of updating. The windows all need replaced and there was a couple of spiders in them. The staff were so lovely the bar and wait staff fabulous. The food prices were high compared to the room cost but then you have a captive market. It's close to Dumfries so lots of options there for eating out. The car park was very muddy with the rain and so was a bit skweltchy getting out. The history behind it makes it a nice place for overseas guests to come and experience.
The hotel is a beautiful but if history and you feel like you step back in time when you go there. The grounds and beautiful and would make for some amazing wedding pictures. The rooms are in need of updating. The windows all need replaced and there was a couple of spiders in them. The staff were so lovely the bar and wait staff fabulous. The food prices were high compared to the room cost but then you have a captive market. It's close to Dumfries so lots of options there for eating out. The car park was very muddy with the rain and so was a bit skweltchy getting out. The history behind it makes it a nice place for overseas guests to come and experience.
