Wonderful location with beautiful views and walking on the common. Very friendly staff, excellent breakfast and quality in-room tea and coffee. Large beer garden with fun outdoor games.

Would have been too marks all round but upon arrival we found half the hotel out of bounds due to having a refit. They did open up the bar area's the next evening which was good as that's the part of the hotel which is olde worlde other than that we had a lovely stay.

Period property with it's quirks. Staff very friendly. Ample parking. Rooms clean with a nice touch of adding quality items in the room (tea pigs tea bags, Molton Brown etc) Breakfast excellent.

This hotel is in a beautiful location - our room was clean and welcoming. It was hot with no AC but there was a fan in the wardrobe. Plenty of parking too.

Another good stay. Food was great. Just need to be aware that when weddings are on certain areas are out of bounds (particularly the outdoor seating area)

My stay at this property was comfortable and enjoyable. The hotel is large and has lots of classic country hotel character, plenty of parking with some excellent views across the Nailsworth valley.

Perfect! Lovely spacious room, excellent facilities, large comfortable bed, great to have plenty of space with 2 dogs. Superb shower with quality toiletries. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Menu and quality of food excellent. So much space both indoors in bar/eating areas and outdoors in beer garden. Best ‘dog friendly’ hotel we’ve stayed in, can’t wait to book again.

From start to finish our 2 night break was excellent. From the warm welcome when checking in to us checking out the staff made us want for nothing. The room we stayed in was clean and was cleaned with everyting restocked. It had all the appliances you would expect, kettle for provided tea and coffee, ironing board and kettle including a safe and T.V. Although in the adjoining country house, we never felt that we was not part of the main hotel building. There was also an outdoor bar which was open when we had pizzas on the Friday of our stay which were freshly cooked in the outdoor pizza oven. The Sunday dinner was of high quality and again, the staff during meal times were thorough and efficent. The hotel is situated just off the common which gives access to plenty of walks. Overall I would recommend the hotel to anyone as it caters for all.

Absolutely stunning hotel. Beer garden a great space on a lovely summer's day. Staff were friendly and attentive. Rooms were comfy and spacious and the blackout blinds made for a good night's sleep. Breakfast very good I will be returning if I'm in the area.

Very disappointed. The room was nothing like the pictures, it smelt old and musty, and needs a complete overhaul. Mould on the bath screen and around windows. Tapes dripped and were difficult to turn on and off. Bed seemed to be on a slope and you had to roll up and over a ridge in the middle. I was shown to a table for breakfast and brought tea and toast but the server never came to take my order. The only good thing about the hotel was the lovely receptionist who was so helpful, professional and friendly.

Clean and beautiful

Avoided booking a compact room but even the standard is tiny and very hot and stuffy (weather was not very warm) and dirty in places. Secondary double glazing limits the chance of much fresh air. Hotel bars and garden nice. Restaurant ok but not enough staff and expensive for what you get.

The room, toilet and bath facilities were clean to a very good standard and the decor was tasteful and restful. We had a lovely view over the Nailsworth Valley. We were well-pleased with the accommodation which suited our needs admirably. The evening meal in the restaurant was nicely presented and was delicious and enjoyable.

It’s a shame to rate this beautiful place so low but it’s purely down to the service. Firstly, my name was spelled wrong on my room card. Not a big issue, I made my way to my room. I booked valley view specifically as I wanted to enjoy that on my solo trip. I look out of my window and I see… the car park. I try to call the reception a few times, no answer. I try to call on my mobile, get through but they can’t hear me so quickly hang up. No call back. I make my way back to reception to ask them if I can change room, but I’m told ‘we have a large booking and they’ve taken all the valley view rooms. I can’t change you’. No apology or offer of compensation/a good will gesture to make it up to me. Baring in mind I paid for valley view! Fine. Evening comes and I fancied a bath. I go to run it and I see multiple suspicious curly hairs… nope! Shower it is :) Room was quite cold despite putting the radiator on max. I thought I may give them feedback at checkout when they ask me how my stay was… oh, they didn’t ask! Just took my payment and goodbye. I would love to stay here again but I’m just so disappointed by the service. The place really is beautiful.

The room was on the small side and tired. The room got rather hot when radiator came on in the night. Noise woke me up at 5am from corridor. They were packing up breakfast before end of session and people were still coming in for breakfast, not good when you pay £162 per night!! No pain au chocolate left at 9am.

Important to say that in reception here there's a taxidemy bear who was murdered by a British imperialist soldier back in the day. Leaving that monstrosity aside, this is a lovely old coaching inn, set in the Gloucestershire countryside. If you're going out walking your dog in the daytime, great, but there's no way on earth I'd have risked walking on the roads around here outside of daylight hours. Our room was unacceptably hot. Yes, a low-powered plug-in fan was provided (I found it in a wardrobe - 'beware of the leopard') but was not up to the job. In terms of dinner - the restaurant here is very good - specifically, the cote de boeuf for 2 was excellent. Unfortunately, breakfast finished ridiculously early for a weekend - 9.30, even on Sundays! - so we didn't get to sample this, despire staying both days of the weekend. So, no judgement on what may have been on offer but the fact that it stopped unreasonably early for no good reason does count massively against this place. On our first night here (a Friday!), the bar shut unreasonably early, considering this is a pub. They prioritised random people sat in the garden compared to people paying hundreds to stay overnight. Whatever your perspective, that's poor. The cask beer is not well kept, indeed restaurant staff didn't seem to know it (cask beer) existed, nor to understand what 'not well kept' meant when another paying customer raised it. So improvements would need to be made before we'd come again.

The area around the hotel was amazing. sceanic and peaceful. Lovely walks and lots of nearby to visit. We stayed in a pet friendly room that was ok. Some redecoration needed. Smelt abit doggy but also being on the ground floor and next to the door, there was alot of banging and people chatting as they were coming and going. No sound proofing and i could clearly hear people using the toilet. Although the room had beautiful views across the valley, directly in front of our window was some seating so we had to have the curtains drawn for privacy most of the time. Another thing to point out was the wifi randomly stopped working and would not come back on. We had gone for dinner and wanted to relax in the room and were only about to do so for about half an hour before the wifi connection said it had no service. A call to reception wasnt helpful as was told it happens, signal drops in and out and just try again in a bit. The wifi didnt work for the rest of our stay. Dinner and breakfast was fine, reasonably priced. I couldnt say the food was exceptional but it was good nonetheless. Our doggy got spoiled with a sausage in the morning and i thought it a nice touch the restaurant offered a doggy dinner (albeit at £8.50) I would like to point out that staff are lovely. There was a particular lady at reception who was fabulous and super helpful, giving us info and guidance about local areas and what to do. Piping hot room, windows that cant fully open, guests snoring and the walls were so thin I couldnt sleep. Bathroom shower took only 2 or 3 minutes till it was overflowing due to blocked pipes. Horrible, expensive food at the restaurant. However, staff are lovely and the location is nice.

We had the warmest welcome ever from reception here which was lovely. They had kindly moved us to a better room to avoid being disturbed by a wedding they had. The room was very comfortable and relatively recently refurbished. Good and efficient breakfast.

Amazing this is a 3-star, feels like it should be higher. I expect it’s the weird way hotels are rated. Asked for a room with a bath and after getting one with a shower, was given a different room. The room was amazing, well decorated, great bed, beautiful view. Whilst the receptionist staff were good, the rest of the staff looked pretty miserable and were not chatty at all. I hear they hire teens and work them long hours, so no surprise. Also, the surfaces were sticky but I know this is because of the way there are cleaned, not the lack of cleanliness. Overall, stay here - the food is amazing, the location and value is amazing, highly recommended.

When you look at the photos there are cows and serenity.What you get if you stay in the tower room is a very busy road instead and a poor nights sleep. Not for me I am afraid,

Well appointed hotel with lovely views across the Nailsworth valley. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable with a huge bed. Didn't use the restaurant for dinner, but breakfast is excellent. We have stayed here three times now and have not been disappointed.

Did the online check in. Not so sure that's a good thing as the room we had a view of the car park, room 57. Couple in front of us, who checked in at the hotel were told they had a room with a great view. At that time, 2pm, we could not see our room (fair enough as check in is 3 onwards). We were meeting people else where so did not get back until after 5pm. The room was dated and the radiator did a good impression of Niagara Falls, very noisy, so had to turn it off. Told the receptionist on leaving who said she would report it, although I doubt this news to the hotel. In the morning went to make coffee, except there was none. As I paid £194 for the room it was very poor value.

The Bear is in a beautiful location,we had a great view from our room.The best thing about the Bear are the staff. Without exception they friendly,welcoming and most helpful

The staff were efficient polite and obliging. We had an issue with electric in room and we were immediately upgraded to a superior room and given free drinks. The breakfast was superb. Very enjoyable stay

Very nice hotel near to Stroud in the Cotswolds. Good accommodation, nice food food and excellent friendly staff.

Hotel looks beautiful, however the shower in my room had very little water pressure. So washing was a slow task. Food was great apart from dessert which took an age to come out. When it arrived it was cold and rock hard. The beer is good but again service was rather slow waiting for staff to show up to serve.

Lovely welcome, room in the main were very nice, comfortable bed, good tea and coffee options. Bar had lots of small areas that were very nice. Great breakfast options and service

Nicely placed in the Cotswolds countryside, not far from Stroud and 20 mins from the National Arboretum at Westonbirt. Friendly and helpful staff, clean and comfortable. Nice views, too!

A really good hotel that we've stayed in before. The room was a good size with quality furnishings and toiletries. The only negative point was that the poached eggs did not have runny yokes.

We booked this place at the last minute without very high expectations. However we had a wonderful stay at the Bear. The thing we loved the most was the absolutely amazing view from our room. I can’t imagine staying at this property without getting a room with a view to the valley. To add to this was a comfortable bed and very friendly service all around. We especially enjoyed our meals in the busy pub with its cozy atmosphere and good food (including the crumble and sticky toffee pudding). They are very dog friendly- our pup enjoyed the free treats and nice bed for him in our room. There is a beautiful walk just steps outside the hotel and many other walks we enjoyed nearby. We look forward to returning.

We love the Bear at Rodborough. There is so much character, it’s relaxing, the staff are lovely and the food is amazing. The Chateaubriand was out of this world. One observation to the owners though is that since removing the restaurant carpet to reveal the parket flooring is that the acoustics have been negatively affected. Some decorative sound deadening would be very welcome.

Breakfast was excellent, good quality food and served quickly. Nice bar area with good ales.
